Preventing Scams In The Time Of Coronavirus By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as

coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice .gov/coronavirus/combatting fraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health

Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. •Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. •Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is the primary way that scammers are able to install malware or viruses on a computer. The DOJ also recently announced that malicious sites have been masquerading as See Scam Prevention pg 6

Amid a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), Lancaster EMS first responders are now wearing reusable isolation gowns, thanks to the generosity of community supporters. The idea came from Lancaster EMS paramedic Emma Einwechter, who noted that the organization’s supplies of disposable gowns were running low and fashioned a protective garment out of a shower curtain. She asked her mother, Amy Raine of Strasburg, to help out. “I do like to sew,” Raine commented. “I sewed for a long time.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised in 2007 that isolation gowns should be worn to

protect health care workers’ arms and exposed body areas from coming into contact with clients’ clothing, blood, bodily fluids, secretions, and excretions. Isolation gowns that are effective against COVID-19 are typically made from nonwoven polypropylene, a synthetic material whose construction offers increased protection from liquid penetration of virus-containing moisture droplets. Knitted and woven fabrics bought from a fabric store would not be effective at preventing liquid penetration, and Lancaster EMS wanted protective gear that could be quickly cleaned and

returned to use, so Einwechter and Raine researched the idea and found a See Lancaster EMS pg 2

Restaurants Update Operating Hours, Methods Even for the best chefs, cooking at home can get tiresome. Although home cooking and baking have seen a resurgence across the country during the shutdown, local restaurants are still providing professionally prepared food for when home cooks need a break or just want to eat something different. Although restaurants are still open, operating hours may have changed, and dining in is no longer an option. A list of restaurants in the Penn Manor, Solanco, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, along with their updated hours, ordering methods, and delivery options, is posted at www.townlively.com/southern-end -eatery-options. Caterers that serve the area and are selling food to the public, as well as additional local restaurants that would like to be added to the list, may submit their information to dreidenouer@engleonline.com.

Solanco High School student Andre Mohler and Clermont Elementary’s Rhett Jennings have scored high enough to qualify for the national MathCon test. Rhett scored 233 out of a possible 300 points, placing him in the 99th percentile of students who took the exam. Over the course of a month, students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels competed in the 2020 MathCON competition. MathCON is an online mathematics contest in which students compete in grade level contests against math students from around the U.S., according

to Quarryville Elementary teacher Gerald Boyd. The second round is available to the students who qualify as the top finishers in the country based on the first round’s test results. The second round was to also include an in-person test in Chicago, though it was canceled due to recommended safety procedures during the coronavirus pandemic. At the high school level, the following Solanco students scored high enough to earn spots as alternates for the finals: Emma Kline, Trent Henry, Charles Golden, Owen Brazelton, Joel Troutman, and Brady Robillard.

sure what my next project is. I just hope it doesn’t have to do with plastic.” Even though sewing gowns was not the easiest project, Raine was happy to do it. “The whole time, I was thinking of my daughter and her co-workers. It was pretty neat to be making (gowns) for somebody specific.” Lancaster EMS marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert noted that Filling’s Clothing donated a cloth zip garment bag for each ambulance and other service vehicles so providers can store contaminated gowns after client contact and before sanitization. While the need for handsewn items has been met at Lancaster EMS, sewists who would like to help health care workers to be protected may make masks for WellSpan Health. Information is available at www.wellspan.org/ media/2364423/WellSpan-Face mask-making-instructions.pdf, or readers may find a step-by-step tutorial at https://goods stores.com/blogs/a-good-word -blog/how-to-sew-a-face-mask. shower curtains would produce a lot of waste and would not be cost effective. Lowe’s at Greenfield had drop cloth material in 10-by-25-foot rolls that fit the bill, and the store donated a number of rolls to the cause. Lancaster EMS requested 160 gowns, which was more than one person could sew quickly. Raine’s Amish neighbors agreed to help, and within about 10 days, all of the gowns were completed. “My husband, Mark, did most of the cutting out. Our house was basically a factory,” Raine said, adding that after the pieces were cut, she kept some for herself to sew and delivered others to her neighbors for them to complete. “It was just great that I could go to my neighbors. They’re my friends,” Raine said, adding that the sewists were eager to assist. “I couldn’t have asked for a better response.” Prior to sewing the isolation gowns, Raine had sewn about 160 cloth masks for Lancaster EMS. Masks are smaller and quicker, and cotton fabric is easier to sew. “Because (the plastic used for the gowns) was thin enough, it would sew easily on the sewing machine, but it ... didn’t give like fabric does, so the seams didn’t always line up, but we weren’t going for beauty. program closest to them. Second, community assistance is needed to keep the CPFB operating well. Volunteerism is critical to the core mission of the CPFB and its partner agencies. To ensure the safety of the volunteers, the food bank has implemented several restrictions, including limiting staffing to only 10 individuals at a time. People who are healthy and have some free time to give are invited to volunteer. Finally, if people want to help, financial contributions are being

welcomed. The CPFB can acquire nutritious food in large quantities that has been handled safely and make it stretch very far. A $1 donation can help the food bank provide six meals. Rather than bringing people together in person for a traditional food drive, CPFB staffers can set groups up to do a virtual food drive online. CPFB leaders have advised their charitable food partners to continue their work with a modified delivery, such as drivethrough distribution sites, graband-go meals, and appointmentonly access to food pantries to limit the gathering of large groups of people. The process for signing up for the programs can be done over the phone in many cases or will be waived all together, so people should not hesitate to ask for help. Sheetz recently announced the expansion of the Kidz Meal Bagz program, which provides free food to help children and families in need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meal Bagz are currently available at all 600 Sheetz locations and will be available all day. The Meal Bagz include a turkey sandwich, chips and a beverage. Families interested in taking advantage of the free Kidz Meal Bagz program can go to any Sheetz location and ask an employee for a meal at the register or through the drivethrough. Meals will be available daily while supplies last. An adult does not need to be present to obtain a meal. According to Travis Sheetz, president & COO, Sheetz will give away approximately 80,000 meals per week across the communities it serves. The program, which began on April 16, will be available for two weeks at which time it will be re-evaluated based on community need. Additionally, every Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m., Sheetz will reserve all 279 of its locations in Pennsylvania to senior citizens, as well as any customer designated as higher-risk. This initiative started on April 19. Sheetz’s

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) wants people to know that the charitable food network is still operational, albeit with significant precautionary procedures to maintain maximum safety while striving to maintain a robust response. Individuals who are hungry and families that rely on food assistance should still seek help when they need it. CPFB leaders are committed to meeting the elevated need that they believe will develop as the COVID-19 situation continues.

Parking Area Closes Due To Traffic Effective March 22, the Lancaster Conservancy indefinitely closed the parking area and River Road access to Tucquan Glen and Pyfer Nature Preserves. This decision was made due to overcrowding and a lack of respect for the preserves. Increased visitation as a result of early spring

weather combined with people looking for options to get out of the house while nonessential businesses close amid the COVID-19 national emergency have made this already busy preserve unsafe. Tucquan Glen offers only a small 20-car parking area on the

narrow River Road. Illegal parking along the road causes congestion and challenges for neighbors, and large crowds and disrespectful visitors required employees to provide policing services, according to Conservancy president Phil Wenger. At this critical time, the Lancaster Conservancy views the opportunity to get out in nature and explore natural lands as an essential quality of life service that the agency is proud to provide for the community’s mental and physical well-being. However, members of the public are asked to be respectful and create distance between themselves and other parties, leash their dogs,

and when parking areas are full, move on to another preserve, natural area, or park. Of the conservancy’s 46 nature preserves throughout the region, several have ample parking along with moderate to difficult hiking trails that showcase beautiful streams and the emergence of spring. These include Kellys Run, Pinnacle Scenic Overlook, Welsh Mountain, Shenks Ferry, Climbers Run, Falmouth Forest Garden at Conoy Wetlands, Steinman Run, and Trout Run. Readers may learn about each of these preserves’ hiking trails, histories, flora, and fauna at www.lancasterconservancy.org/ preserves/.

The CDC has said that cloth masks may be helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and handmade masks are acceptable for compliance with Pennsylvania’s shutdown regulation that masks must be worn in public and in the workplace. However, Product Safety and Consulting Services owner Misty Henry stressed that cloth masks have not been tested according to FDA or National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards to prove prevention or mitigation of virus transmission.

If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Spike’s Pet Pantry Asks For Assistance Humane Pennsylvania’s Spike’s Pet Pantry has become an important pet food resource for the community members facing financial hardships during the pandemic. The community is using Spike’s Pet Pantry resources at an unprecedented level and Humane Pennsylvania needs the community’s help to make sure it can continue to serve the community well during this time. Community members who are able are asked to consider donating pet food, particularly dry cat food, as the supply is critically low. Financial donations are also sought. Donations of dry cat food, other pet food, and supplies can be purchased through Humane Pennsylvania’s AmazonWishList, www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls /ZM4RWC3GE78P, and directly shipped to the Humane Veterinary Hospitals Reading, 1729 N. 11th St., Reading, or the Humane Veterinary Hospitals Lancaster and the Humane League of Lancaster

Public Reminded To Report Abuse The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) reminds state residents that its ChildLine, a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerns of child abuse or neglect, is still fully operational and available at 800-932-0313 for Pennsylvanians seeking to report potential cases of child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as scheduled recognition activities and regular life have shifted due to COVID-19, DHS and child welfare advocates implore all Pennsylvanians to learn signs of potential abuse or neglect and, if they suspect abuse, make the call to ChildLine. As the public navigates this public health crisis and the necessary disruptions, it is important to not lose sight of the obligation to keep children safe and prevent child abuse. Whether it is a neighbor, family member, or community member encountered in a store or elsewhere, if someone suspects something is wrong, anyone can call ChildLine and make a report.

Cemetery Project: Past Lives, Future Goals

Local resident Steve Herr is seeking volunteers interested in helping to restore and maintain the Witmer Kendig Herr Cemetery on Letort Road near Millersville.

“When I was a younger man, I couldn’t have cared less, but now I’m 65. I’m interested in history,” Steve Herr commented. Steve grew up on a farm in Kirkwood. He and his brother were the third generation to work in their family’s farm equipment dealership. Eventually, however, the dealership was sold, and Steve went to work for another company. Sixteen years ago, he became a real estate agent. Three years ago, he and his wife, Connie, who taught math at Solanco High School, moved to Crossgates in Millersville. Last year, knowing how much Steve loves history, his three children gave him a subscription to Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com holds the largest online collection of family history records, the site claims, and users can access records dating as far back as the 13th century. Steve was in his element. He discovered that he is the 11th generation from Hans Herr, who was part of the first group of Europeans to establish homes in what is now Lancaster County in about 1711. The 1719 Herr House in Willow Street is known to be the oldest existing dwelling in the county. Hans had a brother named Abraham and a son named Christian, two names that show up multiple times in the list of Steve’s ancestors. While researching his family tree, Steve came across the Abraham Herr who was his greatgreat-great-grandfather and was surprised to see that he was buried in a Slackwater cemetery. Having recently moved to Millersville, where Slackwater is located, Steve was excited. “I kept digging, and a picture pops up of a cemetery on Letort Road,” Steve recalled. Findagrave.com also had a photo of Abraham’s tombstone. “It’s legible. I could read it!” Steve added. Since the cemetery was so close, Steve made a visit. The collection of about 45 graves is known as the Witmer Kendig Herr Cemetery, and it is located behind a welding shop adjacent to Letort Elementary School on land split between the shop and the neighboring farm. Millersvillebased insurance agent Liz Martin, who has relatives buried at the

site, takes care of trimming weeds around the tombstones several times a year. Like so many family cemeteries in Lancaster County, however, the Witmer Kendig Herr resting place is showing the effects of age. Abraham’s tombstone is one of the few that are still upright, and the inscription is clear. Others rest against the enclosing wall, which itself is in disrepair. “It has this beautiful 4- or 5-foot wall around it,” Steve said. “It’s falling down. It broke my heart. Imagine the pride the people had to build this wall.” Motivated to do something, Steve looked for a cemetery association and, finding none, has plans to start one. He has researched the process and requirements, and has looked to his cousin Marty Greenleaf, who is the head of the Union Presbyterian Church cemetery association, for advice. Steve is creating a list of people who are interested in the restoration and maintenance of the Witmer Kendig Herr Cemetery, andm when it is safe to do so, he will host an organizational meeting. “My first goal is maintenance, getting the tombstones back, and making them readable,” Steve commented. “My ultimate goal is to rebuild the wall, but that could be a lofty goal.” Steve noted that while the text on Abraham’s stone might be legible, like the others in the cemetery, it is written in German. Finding a translator is also on the list of things to accomplish. Incidentally, Steve’s research revealed that Abraham’s father, Christian, Steve’s great-greatgreat-great-grandfather, is buried in a cemetery near his new house. “He probably owned the farm where I’m living now,” Steve marveled. “I just think it’s important to remember our heritage, our roots. Their lives were just as important as ours,” Steve said, adding, “Those farmers had pride. My dad taught me the value of hard work, and I know those people lived like that too.” Anyone interested in assisting with the Witmer Kendig Herr Cemetery project may contact Steve at Sherr311@comcast.net or 717-341-2559.

Donations Sought For Building Wells Unto, a Cru ministry formerly known as Global Aid Network, is accepting donations for water wells in the African nation of Chad. In Chad, some people must either drink dirty water if it is available or walk a great distance to obtain clean water. A donor has given Unto a $165,000 matching gift to help people who do not have access to safe, clean water. Readers who would like to take this opportunity to double their impact may donate at https://unto.com/.
