It’s no secret that Lancaster County is a haven for historically significant artifacts and remnants of bygone eras. The area has served as the background for some of the country’s most pivotal events. The ruins of the second Columbia-Wrightsville bridge still poke out of the Susquehanna River, reminding locals of the day Union soldiers set it ablaze to halt advancing Confederate troops in 1863. Another historic location is the birthplace of Robert Fulton, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, which is now used by the Solanco Historical Society as the backdrop for its annual Living History Encampment. The 2024 Living History
Bringing history to life
Encampment will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 17, 18 and 19. On Friday, the event will be open from noon to 4 p.m.; on Saturday, demonstrations will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and on Sunday, activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission for the encampment will be free, and parking will be available for a set cost per vehicle. Refreshments will be available to purchase from Old Iron Grille.
“You can get history from books, but to actually walk into it and experience it - that’s rare.”
The Living History Encampment will include tours of the grounds, which will be populated with various groups of Civil War re-enactors. Attendees will have opportunities to talk with the actors, who will be dressed in period-accurate attire to offer information about the Civil War and its impact on
American history.
“The people who put these events together love history and they love what they do,” said historical fiction author Joel Moore, who has participated in the encampment for the last four years. “We want to remember the soldiers who participated in that war, their living conditions and what they went through. They are people who were here and a part of our history.”
In its early stages, the Living History Encampment was brought to life every year by roughly 40 participants, who set up a modest number of tents on the upper lawn of the Solanco Historical Society’s property. The event has expanded each year to

JJ Roach of Lancaster doesn’t see the world in the same way most people do. The 20-year-old artist has a keen eye for complex patterns and intricate details, which he often quickly spots in what appear to be ordinary settings. In 2020, JJ began leaning into his unique instincts to create elaborate, large-scale drawings that spare no detail. Over the last four years, JJ has continued to hone his craft by expanding his portfolio and
participating in art shows and events in Lancaster County and beyond, including the Philadelphia Eagles Art Gala Charity Auction held in March.
“Green Is the Heart Inspired” was held from March 25 to April 15 at Arch Enemy Arts, a gallery located in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The art gala and auction, which benefited the Eagles Autism Foundation, featured 35 pieces created by artists from the greater Philadelphia area. JJ was among three of the featured artists who have been

Many children dream of becoming a movie star or bringing stories to life on a theater stage. Although many kids outgrow their interest in pursuing a career in the performing arts, young aspiring actors who live in Lancaster County have a plethora of opportunities to step into the limelight. From productions at the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster city to shows offered by Sight & Sound Theatres in Strasburg to performances at Milburn Stone Theatre in North East, Md., the regional theater scene continues
to thrive. Leyla Dalrymple, a fourth-grader at Clermont Elementary School in Quarryville, is an ambitious thespian who feels most at home on the stage.
“(Leyla) has always had a thing for performing. She’s always been passionate about it,” said Windsor Dalrymple, Leyla’s father. “Leyla’s never disappointed about what role she gets; she’s just happy to be on stage.”
Leyla first entered the world of theater when she was 4 years old, starting out with acting classes for children offered by the Fulton Theatre. Leyla has also participated in various

One of humans’ four basic needs for survival, shelter is more than a means of keeping rain off our backs, wind off our necks and sun out of our eyes. Houses become homes because they provide stability, they foster growth, they allow us to lead better lives.
Born out of necessity, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity (LLHFH) has been providing housing for Lancaster County residents for 38 years. Now the affordable housing organization is introducing a new program intended to expand its footprint in the county and beyond.
“Homeownership is a game changer for families,” said Amy Balestier, LLHFH’s vice president of development and communications. “When they can build

wealth, (homeowners) can build their own brighter futures. When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, that isn’t possible. What we have found is that when people own their homes, their children are more likely to go on to college or own their own homes. In essence, we’re helping to fund the future. It doesn’t stop with one Habitat home. There are a lot of success stories.”
LLHFH has launched an ambitious $4 million campaign called Open Doors, which is designed to address the ongoing shortage of affordable housing. LLHFH has already raised the first $3.2 million toward its goal and is seeking to garner the rest through appeals, public and private donations and special events.
“A safe, dry, warm and affordable home offers a family a new chapter in life and the opportunity to build a brighter future,” said Andrew Szalay, LLHFH’s CEO and president. “Open Doors is an important path to Habitat’s capacity to make a bigger impact on our local housing needs. Maybe you’re a low-income renter and you want to be part of the American Dream. You may not have a security deposit (to rent a home), much less a down payment (to purchase a house). It’s a mountain to climb. It’s almost out of the question for some families. But it’s something that Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity is overcoming.”
With the money it raises, LLHFH hopes to provide 30 houses, either through new construction or the renovation of existing structures, to first-time home buyers by 2026. The constructions currently being considered are located in the city of

For four decades, WJTL has been a home for Christian programming, and the radio station wants to honor its legacy and longevity by giving back to the community. WJTL 40 Fest will be held on
Saturday, May 18, at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks. The event will begin at noon and will wrap up with a headlining performance by Crowder, beginning at 8:15 p.m.
“We wanted a day to celebrate our 40th anniversary and decided a
festival lineup at an outside venue would create the type of event perfect for a celebration,” said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director. “I had been talking with Cherry Crest Adventure Farm since 2022 about using their facility for an outside concert, and we thought our 40th anniversary would be the perfect time to bring a great lineup of music to the property.”
The lineup for the festival includes Behold the Beloved, which will perform at 3 p.m.; Leanna Crawford, who will entertain at 4 p.m.; Rhett Walker, who will hit the stage at 5 p.m.; Cochren & Co, which will perform at 6 p.m.; Danny Gokey, who will play at 7 p.m.; and Crowder, who will close out the evening.
“40 Fest will be a day of family fun and great music focused on celebrating 40 years of living out our slogan, ‘Christ. Community. Music.’ Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will have their spring attractions open,” Miller shared. “We’re planning an event that everyone can enjoy, whether you’ve listened to WJTL since 1984 or 2024. 40 Fest will provide a fun day for all.”
WJTL’s story began in 1984, when the station was housed in a renovated chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College, recalled president Fred McNaughton.
“During this time, WJTL expanded its reach, going 24 hours and beginning to broadcast in stereo, while also engaging with the community through various events, including a popular weekly roller skate to contemporary Christian music,” he said.
By the mid-1990s, WJTL had moved to a new location on Oregon Pike. “WJTL also began inviting local organizations to the morning show to share their stories and promote their events,” McNaughton said.
In 2011, the station relocated to its current home at The Junction Center in Manheim. “The move to The Junction Center not only allowed WJTL to continue its community-focused approach, but it also provided a space to invite and host listeners and other community groups in new and engaging ways,” he said.
Through the years and all the changes, one thing is unchanged, he noted. “WJTL’s core mission has remained steadfast: to play great Christian music that inspires and challenges its listeners, to serve its community with all its heart and to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all it does,” he said.

diagnosed with autism. JJ’s mother, Carol, first learned about the Eagles Autism Foundation in February from her other son, John. After doing some research and making a few phone calls, Carol received a response from the foundation, which invited JJ to participate in the upcoming gala by submitting a green piece of artwork. JJ had been working on a large drawing that he hadn’t colored in yet, and he decided to apply the Eagles’ green and white color scheme to have it included. Despite the short timeframe, which necessitated several late-night drawing sessions, JJ finished his piece “Eye of the Eagle” in time for the gala. “It was fun and crazy all at once,” JJ said of the exhibit’s opening night, which he attended with Carol. “I’ve been to art galas and fundraisers before, but never ones with NFL stars or anything.” The opening night at Arch Enemy Arts was attended by art collectors, supporters of the Eagles Autism Foundation and famous players from the Philadelphia football team. “It was beautiful, green chaos,”
Promise Players post fundraiser dinner theater
The Promise Players will present a dinner theater production, “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf,” on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 18, at noon and 6 p.m. All performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster.
In the show, Inspector Casey Solved is called to a local church’s bake sale and bazaar. As usual, Lillian “Lil” O’Laydee has baked her famous date nut loaf using her family’s secret recipe. However, someone else has also baked a date nut loaf and put it on the bake sale table beside Lil’s. The inspector will investigate whether Lil’s recipe was stolen, and the audience will vote on which character they believe is the culprit.
The event is a fundraiser for The Promise Players’ tech fund, and tickets must be reserved at http://promise players.org.
The Promise Players has raised more than $275,000 for local charities over the past 28 years. Now some of the organization’s sound and tech equipment must be replaced. The Promise Players prefers to send all money raised from its shows to the named beneficiary, so it hopes that the dinner theater will raise $30,000 for the new equipment.
The Promise Players’ mission is to provide Christ-centered entertainment for the public and financial gifts to nonprofit organizations in the community.
Carol added. After a few bids, JJ’s piece sold for nearly $1,000. Sporting a glittering green suit and tie, JJ met other artists featured in the exhibit and a few of the Eagles players, as well as the team’s mascot, Swoop.
JJ Roach shares his drawing “Eye of the Eagle” with the Eagles’ mascot, Swoop, during the opening night of the exhibit.
As a child, JJ was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, which often made it difficult for him to concentrate in class. When he was 16 years old, JJ started working on a drawing to thank his teachers for their patience and guidance. After showing the finished piece to a friend, JJ realized he had inadvertently drawn the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence that frequently appears in nature and is associated with the golden ratio. “I mostly still rely on my
instincts, mind and deeper thoughts when I’m drawing,” JJ said.
“(JJ) thinks in shapes and patterns,” Carol said. “I started to realize that’s the way his brain works.” JJ said he hopes to share his story with other people who may have autism or ADHD to let them know that anyone can excel - even if they think differently from others.

other acting programs where participants are guaranteed a role, but the young actress recently landed her first auditioned role as a member of the ensemble for Milburn Stone Theatre’s production of “Cinderella,” which held its final performance at Cecil College in North East, Md., on April 28. While the acting courses entailed a structured rehearsal routine, Leyla and her parents had to adapt to the more rigorous schedule of professional theater. Despite the exhausting practices and many late-night rehearsals, Leyla’s mother, Berna, said Leyla enjoyed every minute of it.
“Even when they were changing out of their costumes after rehearsal, Leyla would sing along and swap stories with her fellow cast members,” Berna said. “She doesn’t have much experience yet, but she participates as part of the bigger picture and develops relationships with the other actors.” Windsor and Berna said they also became involved with the production when they dropped Leyla off at rehearsals, often helping with costumes and working with crew members. “It’s different from the perspective of being observers. You feel like you’re part of it as well,” Windsor added.
Windsor and Berna share a common love for theater, but this is their first experience with being actively involved with a production. Windsor noted that he often attended plays while growing up in the Philadelphia area, and he continued doing so after moving to Lancaster in 1995. “We had no idea what the county had to offer,” Windsor said. In between rehearsals and auditions, Leyla takes dance classes at Debbie’s School of Dance in Quarryville, as well as vocal training with Hempfield-based instructor Joanne Abrom. Previously, Leyla participated in Servant Stage’s production of “Anastasia” in Strasburg. In addition to participating in theater, Leyla writes and performs original music at home.
“We don’t have anything else on the horizon, but that can change any time,” Berna said. “We see this as the beginning of a path and her experience with theater.”
