New Hope Counseling Center will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its Community Closet thrift store with a customer appreciation event on Wednesday, May 22. During the thrift store’s operating hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., patrons may enjoy cupcakes and enter a series of prize drawings, which will include various items from local businesses and a gift card to the Community Closet, which is located at 128 Townsedge Drive, Quarryville.

“We wouldn’t be here without the shoppers,” said Faith Aukamp, manager of the Community Closet. “We are so blessed here in Quarryville with the kindness and the goodness of the community.”

Aukamp said the Community Closet is supported by multiple regulars who frequently participate in its regular sales and special events. Every Wednesday, the store offers a 50% discount on select items to shoppers who are 50 years and older. Aukamp also rotates through a variety of frequent special offers on a weekly basis, such as 20% off all books or household goods.

20 years of giving hope Squaring

All proceeds from the Community Closet’s sales benefit New Hope Counseling Center’s programs aimed at providing accessible, Christ-centered mental health services for the Southern End community. Since the counseling center first began accepting clients in 1998, its board of directors wished to keep all of its programs accessible to anyone in the community by never turning away clients who are unable to pay the standard rate. The thrift store was opened a few years later to establish a steady income, which New Hope uses to financially assist clients in need.

“The Community Closet thrift store remains a vital arm of the New Hope Community Life Ministry,” said Deb Riddell, the ministry’s executive director. “We are thankful for the support from the community that we’ve received for the past 20 years, and we look forward to the next season of the Community Closet.”

Approximately 70% of New Hope’s clients receive a form of financial assistance to help pay for counseling sessions. In 2022, the organization introduced a program to offer counseling services at Solanco High School. The goal of the program is to maintain a safe space for students to

be heard, to receive help with regulating emotions and to increase their emotional intelligence.

“All our money goes toward helping mental health, which has come to the forefront these past few years. Insurance doesn’t often cover mental health services, and it’s something in people’s day-to-day life that goes on the back burner,” Aukamp said. “The community has been outstanding these last 20 years. We have some of the best donors around, and they’ve helped us help a lot of people.”

At any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost.

Nonprofit organization Iron Leg

Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.

Iron Leg is one of the few organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will entail full-contact football

Contested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.

Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).

NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise money and awareness in the

fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of the blossoming sport.

“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”

The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15,

LancasterHistory to mark county’s 295th anniversary

As Lancaster County nears its 295th year, LancasterHistory invites the community to an evening of discovery and celebration on Thursday, May 9, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Attendees may mark the eve of County Founding Day by exploring “Thieves & Vagabonds: A History of Law and Justice in Lancaster County,” the latest exhibition by LancasterHistory, through special curator’s tours scheduled for 5:30 and 7 p.m. In addition, Ben Webber, president of the Manheim Township Historical Society, will present an illustrated talk on the county’s geography in 1729, titled “The Year Lancaster Went Legit,” at approximately 6 p.m.

For one night only, LancasterHistory will display the original “Petition for the Establishment of Lancaster

County,” on loan from the Pennsylvania State Archives.

Further highlights include an all-ages Campus of History scavenger hunt, courtesy of Uncharted Lancaster, and the debut of “Harpo’s History Explorer’s Activity Sheet: Thieves & Vagabonds Edition,” geared for younger visitors to the exhibition. The celebration will be rounded out with a birthday cake cutting at 6:30 p.m.

There is an admission fee, with discounts for seniors and students. Admission is free for children under age 10 and LancasterHistory members. All guests are encouraged to register in advance by visiting www .lancasterhistory.org or calling LancasterHistory at 717-392-4633. Limited tickets will be available at the door.

games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.

Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https://ironleg.org/ interest-form.

in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”

In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under the lights of the Millersville Marauders’ stadium. Not only do Millhouse and fellow Iron Leg co-founder Sean Laukhuff hope to engage adults who want to stay active and enjoy a full-contact football match, but they also see the fundraiser as an opportunity for players’ children and grandchildren to see them out on the field.

The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking. “Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it

“It was really cool to see the comradery among the coaches when we had our first meeting,” Laukhuff said. “When they coached for their school districts, they were always playing against each other. But now they’re on the same team, and they’re excited to plan out their plays and strategies.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available on Iron Leg’s website. To purchase a ticket to spectate the game, visit www .717shows.com/events/ iron-leg-football-game.

from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place. Teams of two players can register by going to www .northstarinitiative.org/

events before Friday, June 7.

“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”

NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.

The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.

“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”

NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.

“All of the money raised will directly support our

women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.

“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”

Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI con-

ducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”

Groundbreaking planned for new museum

and Democracy on Monday, May 13, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Commons on Vine

in the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Coffee and pastries will be available, and local dignitaries will present remarks. Afterward, attendees may tour the Stevens & Smith Center for a behind-thescenes look at the space before construction officially begins. This event is free and open to the public. Friends of Fishing Creek to lead excursion

The Friends of Fishing Creek will host a drivethrough event for all Jeep and off-road vehicle owners on Saturday, May 18, in the Fishing Creek Nature Preserve from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will start at Drumore Township Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore, and end at Susquehannock State Park, 1880 Park Drive, Drumore. A free lunch will be provided by a local food truck vendor at the state park.

The Friends of Fishing Creek will host the drivethrough with the help of partner entities such as Lancaster Conservancy, Donegal Trout Unlimited, Water Quality Volunteer Coalition, and Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Organization. Six stations will be set up during the 3.8-mile ride. At each station, an expert will provide information on aspects of the Fishing

Creek watershed.

This event is family-friendly and free of charge. It is funded in part by an $8,000 grant received in 2023 from the Lancaster Clean Water Partners.

Providence Autos, a local Jeep dealership, has also granted $500 as a partner and sponsor of the event. Representatives of the dealership will be on-site during the event with the newest Jeep models.

Grant funds allowed the Friends of Fishing Creek to create an event aimed at helping Jeep and other off-road vehicle owners to enjoy and also protect the fragile and sensitive ecosystem of the Fishing Creek watershed. Located in the southern portion of Lancaster County, the watershed hosts freshwater trout, cranes, birds and many other species of habitat animals. Many native plants, amphibians and vernal pools are located

within the preserve.

For more information and to register by Friday, May 10, search for “Jeep Day: Education and engagement with your Friends of Fishing Creek” at www.eventbrite .com. This event is open to 60 Jeeps and off-road vehicles.

Friends of Fishing Creek is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to monitoring, preserving, enhancing, and promoting the Fishing Creek Watershed through education, community involvement, and watershed improvement projects. Since its founding in 2006, the organization has worked to protect the watershed health in Drumore and engage a diverse group of community members in its projects.

Reaching out and giving back

When Amanda Hall, director of marketing with Bank of Bird-in-Hand, contacts a nonprofit organization for the bank’s employee giving program, she likes to ask about specific needs. “That has been really helpful,” she noted, adding that one food pantry she contacted told her that having manual can openers to give away is really helpful. “If you’re living in your car or a hotel, it’s good to have a can opener,” Hall pointed out. “Not every can has a pop top.”

SUMMER 2024 HORSEBACK RIDING

Bank of Bird-in-Hand recently reached its 10 year anniversary, and Hall said the employee giving program - originally called the Jeans Day program - has been going on for several years. “Each month, they would select a nonprofit and make a suggested donation, and (employees who donated) could wear jeans that day,” said Hall. As dress codes evolved, the program changed and sometimes donation drives were mixed in with the giving program, which benefited a different local organization each month.

Conservation efforts recognized

The Lancaster County Conservation District recognized outstanding efforts in natural resource conservation this spring at the organization’s 71th Awards Banquet at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster.

The 2024 Outstanding Cooperator of the Year Award was presented to the Oberholtzer family farm of Clark and Marissa Oberholtzer, located in Peach Bottom. This distinction is given to a farm operation that has a well-developed working relationship with the Conservation District and partnering agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service, and has demonstrated a commitment to conserving the natural resources on its farm. In the five years since the Oberholtzers acquired the farm, Clark has implemented more than 5,100 feet of piped-outlet terraces; 2,600 feet of associated

pipe work; 1,100 feet of grassed waterways; and 9.5 acres of a riparian buffer with the USDA’s Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, totaling 1,800 native trees and shrubs planted on the property. Clark has gone above and beyond to conserve the natural resources on his farm for

generations to come.

The 2024 Soil Stewardship Award went to Lloyd King of Salisbury Township. This award is presented to a member of the agriculture community in recognition of the recipient’s commitment to conserving soil and water on his or her farm. King operates a dairy farm that he started 15 years ago, where he milks 70 cows and manages heifers and calves. He manages his herd by rotationally grazing them on 22 acres of pasture. He manages his pastures in a system that can graze all his cows while maintaining dense vegetation year-round.

The Watershed Department awarded the 2024

Watershed Project Award to Simeon Esh, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

Unique Excavating, Donegal Trout Unlimited, and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Each partner played a key role in a stream restoration project on the Conowingo Creek. Their collaboration throughout the project, from landowner approval to securing a grant to installing the project, helped make the restoration successful. In total, the project restored 3,000 feet of aquatic habitat and created 4.5 acres of riparian buffer.

The Erosion and Sedimentation Department presented the 2024 Building Industry Resource Conservation Award to the Walnut Street extension project and its key stakeholders, including High Associates, RETTEW, and Kinsley Construction. The recipients were recognized for their commitment to meeting the regulatory requirements of Chapter 102, demonstrating clear and consistent communication, and joining in the work of conserving the soil and water resources of Pennsylvania.

Ephrata Middle School teachers Jennifer Trout and Joshua Haupt were each honored with a Conservation Educators Award. They were recognized for their dedication to personal and professional development about environmental literacy and their creative connections to engage students in local realworld water quality topics about stormwater and watersheds.

PUBLIC REAL ESTATE AUCTION

For 2024, Hall decided to change things up a little. Rather than choose one organization and collect a lot of different items, Hall decided to focus on a few designated items and spread them out to a number of organizations. In February, the employees collected bottles of laundry detergent, detergent pods, and other laundry supplies. Employees in the five Lancaster County branches - located in Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Paradise, Ephrata, and Manheim - as well as outside the county, took part. “It was successful,” said Hall, who noted that more than 300 containers were collected and distributed to 10 organizations. “People don’t think of donating (detergent) to a food pantry,” she noted. “All the organizations were so appreciative.” Local nonprofits that received the donations included The Factory Market, Good Samaritan Services in Ephrata, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, CrossNet Ministries, REAL Life Community Services in Denver, and the Manheim Central Food Pantry.

During the month of April, Hall connected the drive with Earth Day, focusing on repurposing items such as blankets, sheets, and towels for pet rescues including Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, Centerville Pet Rescue, and Eliannie Animal Rescue. Hall’s marketing assistant, Tory Aldinger, said that paper towel rolls and bleach were also requested.

In addition to donations, employees volunteer their time. In keeping with the Earth Day theme, volunteers picked up litter along a section of highway in Bird-in-Hand on April 25

as part of the Adopt-AHighway program. “With The Factory Ministries, (bank) staff members help out with big bingo events held in September and December,” noted Hall. “It’s a lot of fun. The staff enjoys helping, and it’s a great way to connect with the people in our community.”

Looking ahead, Hall has been talking to local nonprofits about summer projects. “In June, when kids are out of school, they need snack foods and peanut butter and jelly,” she said. “I want to make sure (the nonprofits) are getting things they can use to meet the needs of the community.”
