Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dober-

mans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-9176979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.
Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden still has plenty of energy and enjoys walks and playing fetch in the yard. This lovely gal doesn’t like other dogs, but she adores every human she meets. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. If interested in adopting Eden, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

Last Monday, May 2, Solanco pounded out 18 hits, including a 4-4 effort by Emily Sims, scored 11 runs in the third inning and crushed CV 15-0, this coming after a 2-0 thriller over the Bucks on April 4. “They had a couple errors and a couple walks and we had timely hitting around that,” said Miller. photo by Mona Steinhauer Sexton tossed a two-hitter In Friday night’s 11-3 loss to the Ephrata Mountaineers, Solanco’s with 11 strikeouts. Ty Burger bunts for a base hit in the sixth inning. BY MONA STEINHAUER
Kaden Strong relieved Ty Burger, who had not given up a hit through the fourth inning, in the sixth. CV greeted Strong with a pair of singles and a RBI double. “With two on and two out, Avery made a game-saving catch in right field to end the inning,” Girvin pointed out. Austin Wenger’s two run single in the seventh, along with Cheyney’s run scoring base hit, pushed the lead to 11-6. Strong struck out the side in the seventh, retiring the 3rd, 4th, and 5th hitters in the CV lineup. “Blake has really been hitting well,” said Girvin. “He was up five times, walked twice had two singles and hit a lineout.” Against Ephrata Friday night, April 30, a two out single by Harnish gave the Mules an early lead. Unfortunately, a five run fourth by the Mounts was too much to overcome. “That inning was really the difference,” said Girvin. “Take that away, it’s a 6-3 game. We did have opportunities.” Solanco tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third when Wenger’s delayed steal allowed Herr to scamper home. Ephrata got two back in the bottom half and broke things open with that five-run fourth. Cheyney’s full count single plated Solanco’s last run in the fifth inning. TRACK The boys’ track team, with a 92.5 - 57.5 win over visiting Garden Spot last Monday, May 2 finds itself in a tie for second place in Section Two. Both L-S and Solanco sit at 4-1 behind undefeated Ephrata. The Mules showed their strength in the field against the Spartans with a 48.5 14.5 advantage. Elijah Reimold led sweeps in both the pole vault (Brian Coleman-2nd, Braden Burger- 3rd) and long jump (Noah Baber2nd, Josiah Forren- 3rd) and finished second behind Baber in the high jump. Also in the jumps, Trent McDowell, who led a sweep in the 110 hurdles (Garrett Grove-2nd, Caleb Fuller- 3rd) and was second in the 300’s, and Trenten Henry went 2-3 in the triple. Braden Caldwell led the throwers with a first in the shot and second in the discus
while John Sankus added thirds in both events. Brian Coleman won the javelin and Connor Smith finished second, just one inch behind. Relays highlighted the track events with Solanco winning two of three. Curtis Hills, Joey Hartigan, Wyatt Tomison, who was second in the 800, and Jimmy Hartigan opened the meet with a 4x800 relay win while Jonathan Morales, Forren, Michael Banguna and Riley Ford were tops in the 4x100. Ford, who was second in the 100, and Banguna went on to finish second and third in the 200. Anthony Solis-Morales rounded out the victors with the top time in the 3200. The girls’ team fell to 1-3 with a hard-fought 87-63 loss to the Spartans. Hannah Wood, Katie Urbine and Emma Housekeeper each won two events to spark the scoring. Wood
commanded both the shot and discus with teammate Martha Weaver adding seconds. The pair finished second and third, respectively, in the javelin. Urbine continued her mastery of the pole vault with a winning 12-2 vault and claimed the 100 dash as well. She was also third in the triple jump. Housekeeper raced to victory in the open 400 and the 200 and settled for third in the 100. Other winners included Emily Powl in the 800, Emma Baxter in the 3200 and Olianna Oravitz in the long jump. At Millersville on Saturday, April 30th, Urbine, Oravitz, Carly Rose and Housekeeper set a new school record in the 4x100 with a 50.63, breaking the old record of 50.8 set by Jodi Emling, Bridget Merrick, Tammy Peters and Michelle Spitko set in 1988.

TRANSPORTATION CENTER COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE/ GRAND OPENING & ALUMNI CAR SHOW
Warriors on the Water focuses on providing outdoor recreational therapy, primarily through fishing and boating. This will be the second edition of the annual event after a year’s break in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Warriors on the Water Ltd. is the largest of several events held monthly through October at the reservoir. During the events, veterans and other emergency service providers are given an opportunity to escape from daily stressors by experiencing a day of fishing on the water. Multiple nonprofit organizations are making the day possible. The Pennsylvania and Maryland chapters of Warriors on the Water will provide free fishing kayaks. There will also be free bait and tackle and free use of motorboats, row boats and additional kayaks along with free rod rentals. The organization
has worked with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission so that fishing licenses are not needed for Warriors on the Water events. The event will also include free fishing demonstrations, including information on fly fishing and tying flies from the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Music will be offered all day, and attendees will have a chance to visit with a variety of organizations such as the American Legion; Canine Partners for Life, which will bring service dogs and puppies; Woerth It Hollow Equine Assisted Therapy, which will bring miniature ponies; Veterans’ Breakfast Club of Lancaster; and Homes 4 Heroes. A chainsaw wood-carving artist will give a demonstration. There will also be a patriotic crafts table for children. Warriors on the Water will provide
free food, including a roasted pig, pulled pork, homemade chili, hamburgers, pierogies, hot dogs and cold salads along with non-alcoholic drinks. Cakes and cookies will be offered for dessert. There will be a free gift bag for each warrior, as well as a silent auction featuring donations from many local businesses. “The support from our community is pretty awesome. It’s not just Warriors on the Water; it’s other groups. We all come together and uplift one another,” Gina said. Warriors on the Water is an all-volunteer organization. Volunteers are needed to assist on the day of the event and with setup the day before. Jim Neary’s Live Bait and Tackle on the Octoraro Reservoir is located at 212 Spruce Grove Road, Kirkwood.
