Guidance Counselors Offer Weekly Check-Ins Solanco School District counselors will connect with students during the lunch hour over the next few weeks. All school counselors have set aside time to check in with students. “Bring your lunch or just bring yourself, and join us on Zoom,” invited Solanco High School counselor Lindsay Capoferri. “For the Zoom Meeting ID, pay attention to emails from your teachers, visit your counselor’s website or Schoology, or email your school counselor.” Capoferri noted that two or more school counselors, including a counseling intern, will be present for each meeting. According to the Smith and Swift
middle schools’ guidance websites, the meetings for eighth-graders will include check-ins on how students are doing and provide information on the transition to high school. Guest speakers from Solanco High School will attend the meetings and answer questions about schedules, clubs, sports, and more. The days and times set aside for each school are as follows: Bart-Colerain Elementary, Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m.; Clermont Elementary, Thursdays from noon to 12:30 p.m.; Providence Elementary, Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to noon; and Quarryville Elementary, Thursdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. or noon to 12:30 p.m. See Guidance Counselors pg 2

A group of community members led by relative newcomer Anthony Cavallaro has created an organization to meet the needs of the Quarryville Police Department. Cavallaro moved to Quarryville from the New York metropolitan area in
2016 and quickly got involved with his new community. About 21 months ago, at a borough council meeting, Cavallaro heard Quarryville Police Department chief Clark Bearinger express a desire for a police foundation. A retiree, Cavallaro had time to spare, so he talked with Bearinger and volunteered to start the organization. See Police Foundation pg 5

On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. will take over our social media for a day.” The first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals,” said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved,” noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas.” Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces,” noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas.”

Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid-1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages,” Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).”

Cavallaro had a wealth of leadership experience, but he was unfamiliar with police business. Thus, he attended meetings of the West Lampeter Township (WLT) Friends of the Force and the Lancaster City Police Foundation to see how the organizations functioned, and he did a significant amount of internet research. Attorney Jim Clymer donated his services to ensure that the paperwork Cavallaro created was correct and filed appropriately with the state. In January, the Quarryville Police Foundation was officially established as a charitable, not-for-profit, volunteer organization. The organization held its first meeting right before the shutdown, enabling it to elect officers, which is a legal requirement for opening a bank account. Cavallaro was elected president. Also serving on the board are borough Mayor Joseph Bledsoe Jr., vice president; Kirk Groves, treasurer; and Kelly Osborne, secretary and public relations coordinator. Martin Hudacs serves as an adviser, and Bearinger is a liaison to the board. The group members strive to create a safe community that is good for business, for the community, and for the future, Osborne said. “Our foundation seeks to find ways to support police department success, as police services are critical to community safety, quality of life, and economic success,” Osborne remarked. “We fully support the Quarryville Police Department’s mission of collaborating with our community to prevent crime, promote safety, and enhance the quality of life for our residents, workers, and visitors.” As is typical in police departments, the borough of Quarryville funds the Quarryville Police Department, but tight budgeting results in most of those funds being allocated to fixed personnel costs and maintaining assets. With rapidly changing technology and unforeseen training needs, it is nearly impossible to anticipate all potential costs, Osborne said. Combined, these circumstances often leave limited funding for things like new equipment acquisitions and technology upgrades. The Quarryville Police Foundation will play a crucial role in filling this gap by ensuring that funding is secured to meet these important needs. The foundation is funded by donations, gifts, and grants from individuals, businesses, and philanthropies. Cavallaro shared that the Quarryville post of the American Legion was the organization’s first donor, and the funds will be used to replace the police department’s cache of aging weapons. “Our main focus is to just raise funds. We are not to do the shopping,” Cavallaro said, explaining that Bearinger will select the items needed by the department and then submit a purchase order to the borough, which will complete the purchase. In turn, the foundation will reimburse the borough. “We never take possession of anything,” Cavallaro clarified. The stay-at-home order has prevented the foundation from hosting any fundraising events, but Cavallaro has handaddressed 1,300 envelopes and purchased See Police Foundation pg 12

Auditions Set For MCCL Choirs The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has slated its annual spring auditions for the 2020-21 choir year, but this year, due to COVID-19, auditions are being offered virtually in May. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung, and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers. The performing choirs include singers in Carol Choir, grades two through five; Concert Choir, grades six through eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine through 12. The choirs practice weekly on Tuesday evenings from late August through early May. The choirs are led by artistic director Rosemary Blessing and director Sarah Wingard. Blessing holds degrees in piano performance and business administration from Eastern Mennonite University and has pursued graduate study in choral music. She maintains a private piano studio and teaches piano at Franklin & Marshall College. An active pianist in the Lancaster area, Blessing currently plays with the Allegro Orchestra. She is a founding member of the Beyond Ourselves chamber ensemble, a project pairing music and social
justice, with annual benefit concerts promoting and supporting the global work of Mennonite Central Committee. Wingard earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from Messiah College with a concentration in voice and extensive study in piano. Growing up in Virginia, she sang with the nationally acclaimed Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir. She teaches elementary music and middle school chorus at the Locust Grove campus of Lancaster Mennonite School. She also sings and regularly solos with the Susquehanna Chorale. Poll Workers Sought For General Primary The Lancaster County Board of Elections is in need of poll workers for the general primary election on Tuesday, June 2. Many of its usual poll workers are considered in the high-risk group and have expressed concern about working in the polls due to coronavirus. In addition to duPont Hospital, Nemours provides pediatric care at more than 30 sites across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

The bride is the daughter of Bryan and Kelly Herr of Drumore. She graduated from Solanco High School in 2015 and from Lock Haven University in 2019. She is employed by Clinton County Adult Probation in Lock Haven. The groom is the son of Matt and Angela Geisewite of Loganton. He graduated from Jersey Shore Area Senior High School in 2014 and is employed by Ameron Construction in State College. The maid of honor was Kloe Musselman of Pequea. Bridesmaids were Taylor Herr of New Providence, sister-in-law of the bride; Erica Everett of Loganton; and Brianna Blevins of Strasburg. Serving as best man was Dan Everett of Loganton. Groomsmen were Brandon Herr of New Providence, brother of the bride; Lane Geisewite of Jacksonville, brother of the groom; and Adam Campbell of Annapolis Junction. The bride was given in marriage by her father. The reception was held at the Providence Church Family Life Center in New Providence.
