Singers Invited To Regional Rehearsals By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Typically, there are about 800 singers with up to 5,000 (people) in attendance in the Great Auditorium. Really, (there’s) nothing like it elsewhere. (It’s) very inspiring,” said Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) music director Tom Berdos, speaking about the Ocean Grove Choir Festival in Ocean Grove, N.J. At least that many people are expected to attend the 65th annual festival on Sunday, July 14, especially considering that Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, which hosts the festival, is celebrating its 150th year in 2019. “It’s an event dedicated to the glory of God, (a) very unique choral event, as well as a unique spiritual event,” Berdos remarked. “In addition to the large group on choir festival day, there are the regional rehearsals where people can meet and

enjoy other singers in their area. People often participate for many years. It becomes a very special annual event.” Memorial UMC, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, is one of those regional rehearsal sites. Rehearsals will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays from May 29 to July 10. Folks who plan to participate in the festival choir are invited to attend as many rehearsals as possible. “The more you attend, the better prepared you will feel for the festival,” Berdos said. The theme for the festival is “On Christ the Solid Rock,” and the 10 selected anthems reflect that theme. These are “God of Ages, God Eternal” by Thomas Juneau; “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” arranged by Nathan Carter; “Lift Thine Eyes to the Mountains” from Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”; “Pilgrim’s Chorus” from Richard Wagner’s “Tannhauser”; “At the Name of Jesus” by Rene Clausen;

The choir of Memorial United Methodist Church, including director Tom Berdos (far right) and accompanist Deborah Berdos (second from right), invites singers to attend regional rehearsals for the 65th annual Ocean Grove Choir Festival on Wednesday evenings at Memorial beginning on May 29. The festival is set for July 14. “I Believe” by Mark Miller; “Jacob’s Ladder,” arranged by Calvin Hampton; “No Time” by Susan Brumfield; “The Ground” by Ola Gjeilo; and “Upon This Rock” by John Ness Beck. Choir members are expected

As the beginning of boating season arrived, the Lancaster Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary offered “About Boating Safely” training courses to promote good seamanship, safe operation, and knowledge of Pennsylvania boating regulations. Most recently, nine individuals attended training on April 9 at the Visitors’ Center at Muddy Run Park. The eight-hour intensive course includes modules on knowing one’s boat, vessel maneuvering, rules of the road, navigating the waterways and safe operations. Upon passing the final examination, students become eligible to receive the Boating Safety Education Certificate, which is recognized nationwide.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteers who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education. Currently, 24 puppies and young dogs are in training to serve an individual or to serve in schools or retirement homes. One of the most recent to enter the program is Murphy, a 9week-old black Labrador who was named in memory of the late radio personality Jerry Murphy. The puppy is slated to be part of the BARKS (Benefit, Assist, Rehabilitated, Knowledge, and Service) program at CI Moshannon Valley, a federal incarceration facility. There, he will be cared for and trained by inmates, and UDS Service Dogs staff members will visit and receive reports. When Murphy returns at age 1, he will be assessed for physical condition and ability. If he is of a good size, he may be used to assist an individual with balance, Breece said. If he has any health quirks, Murphy will be trained as a facility dog. The cost to train a service dog is approximately $25,000 over two years. Ideally, sponsors are found to cover large chunks of the costs. Going forward, however, Breece wants to offer sponsorships for the smaller things that the Cause for Paws supports. A dozen puppies are brought into the program each year, and they need food bowls, leashes and collars, food, treats, and three vests each year as they grow. Veterinary care for the animals includes spay/neuter surgeries, checkups, and medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. “We’re always looking for new sponsors and volunteers,” Breece said. Volunteer orientation is held once a month. Interested individuals may call Breece at 717-715-8753. To register for Cause for Paws, readers may visit www.udservices.org/paws. Everyone who registers by Wednesday, May 29, will receive a T-shirt, and all preregistered dogs will receive a bandana.

abilities. The entire course is paved, and because it is located entirely on HACC’s campus on a weekend, there will be no traffic. “It’s good for families and safe,” Breece commented. Awards will be given to the people who complete the course the fastest, but there will be other activities available that morning. A Zumba warm-up will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Face painting will be available, and a magician will make balloon animals. New this year, children in kindergarten through grade five will be able to test their agility on a course that will include ladder drills, over/under, hula hoops, cone weaves, tunnels, and a 50-yard dash. The agility course will open at 10 a.m. There is a cost to participate, and prizes will be awarded. Dogs will be welcome at Cause for Paws. All canines must always be leashed, have excellent temperament with other dogs and children, and be current on their rabies and distemper vaccines. Cleanup and water stations will be provided. Attendees will be able to meet the new ambassador dog, Nova, and her owner, Jennifer King. Beginning in July, the pair will venture into the community twice a week to introduce folks to UDS Service Dogs and recruit clients and sponsors. King and Nova will be available for lunch-and-learn events, presentations, and other interactions. “We’re trying to put ourselves out in the community more,” Breece explained. “That will help us build our mobility client list.” UDS Service Dogs is primarily in the business of providing trained canines for people with mobility disabilities and autism, Breece said. “The facility dog list is really growing,” added program coordinator Kristy Smith.

Serving the Area for 35+ Years

Summer is a beloved time of year that’s often dominated by time spent outdoors soaking up summer sun, but all that extra time outdoors can make people vulnerable to summer pests, particularly mosquitoes and ticks. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, mosquitoes are more than just hungry, unwanted backyard guests. In fact, mosquito-borne diseases, including Zika virus, West Nile virus, and dengue, pose significant threats. W hile not all mosquitoes carry disease, even those that don’t still bite humans, leaving them to deal with discomfort and itchiness. Taking measures to control mosquitoes can reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. · Remove places where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in standing water. Once a week during summer and other times of the year when mosquitoes might be buzzing around, walk around your property and remove standing water. Bird baths, flowerpots, children’s toys, pools, old tires, and trash

containers are some of the more common places where water can collect and present perfect places for mosquitoes to lay eggs. Turn these items over to empty any standing water you find. Remove empty flowerpots and old tires from the property and make sure water storage containers are tightly covered at all times. · Address areas where mosquitoes like to rest. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that mosquitoes like to rest in dark, humid areas. This includes car ports, garages, and beneath patio furniture. Outdoor insecticides can prevent mosquitoes from resting in such areas. W hen inside a home, mosquitoes may be resting under a sink, in closets, beneath the furniture, or in a laundry room. Indoor insect sprays and indoor insect foggers work quickly and can be highly effective, but reapplication might be necessary, as they won’t prevent more mosquitoes from entering the home at a later time. · Check your window screens. Mosquitoes might prefer the outside, but that doesn’t mean they won’t enter a home looking for meals if given the opportunity. Inspect window screens to look for holes that may provide mosquitoes with access to your home’s interior, replacing any damaged screens immediately. When leaving or entering a home, make a concerted effort to close doors as quickly as possible. Despite their diminutive stature, ticks are another big concern for people, particularly those with pets. As the weather warms, ticks are out looking for a host to climb on and get a blood meal. to Consumer Reports, a threefoot-wide path of wood chips or gravel can prevent tick migration by creating a physical barrier that’s dry and sometimes too hot for ticks to tolerate. Such a barrier also serves as a visual reminder to anyone in your household to be especially careful if they step beyond the perimeter.

R036772

Ticks are a significant concern because they can be infected with bacteria, viruses, or parasites, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and babesiosis are just a few of the many tick-borne diseases. These pathogens can be passed to humans and pets via the bite of infected ticks. In 2018, at least one variety of disease-transmitting tick had been found in all of the lower 48 states, according to the CDC. In addition, researchers at Cornell University identified 26 species of ticks along the East Coast alone. Thus, preventing tick bites is important, and the process starts right in your own backyard. According to Consumer Reports and the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program, controlling wildlife that enters your yard can help keep tick numbers down. Open access means animals can enter … and so can ticks. Fencing and pest management solutions may help. Other ideas, including landscaping techniques, can reduce tick populations and protect people and pets: · Remove leaf litter from the yard. · Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edges of the lawn. Mow regularly to keep the lawn short. · Create a barrier between wooded areas and the yard if it abuts a forested area. According

those thinking of revamping an existing deck or building an entirely new one, these trends are on point. Established perimeters: While “picture framing is not a new trend, it has taken greater hold in recent years. The term refers to aesthetically appealing designs that conceal the ends of deck boards for a clean finish. Some designs feature contrasting material colors on the ends for even more impact. This helps create refined perimeters for a polished look. Rooftop decking: Urban areas also can benefit from decking to create usable outdoor spaces. In fact, many new condominium and townhouse communities are incorporating rooftop decks into their designs, particularly in communities with water views or other impressive vistas. HGTV experts suggest that rooftop decks should feature light-colored materials and fixtures to help keep the area cool, as it will likely be exposed to direct sunlight. Distressed hardwood: Builder and Developer, a management resource for professional homebuilders, says that the trend for using distressed hardwoods at home has migrated outside. Some decking manufacturers have recently introduced lowmaintenance composite deck boards that mimic the look and feel of distressed, rustic hardwood flooring. This weathered appearance gives the look of age without the upkeep of real aged wood. Wooden walkways: When peo-

ple think of decking, they probably envision a more traditional space that is up off the ground and features a patio table or outdoor furniture. But decking also can consist of wooden walkways or a low-laying patio to accentuate the yard. Mixed materials: Homeowners may be inspired by commercial eateries and urban markets in their exterior design choices. Decks featuring composite materials and aluminum railings blend sophistication, urban appeal, and comfort. Personal touches: Homeown-

ers can customize their decks with personal touches. It’s not unheard of to wrap columns in stone or glass tiles for more impact. And the vast array of decking colors now available enables fun interpretations for outdoor areas. Fire pit conversation area: Many decks can incorporate water or fire elements for visual appeal. Gas-fueled fire elements can expand the functionality of decks beyond the warm seasons or make enjoying them practical on nights when the temperature plummets.

When the season for outdoor entertaining arrives, time spent in the yard entertaining friends and family tends to increase. Barbecuing lends itself well to informal warm-weather gatherings. While spending time outside, many pet owners like to have their furry companions nearby so they can enjoy the fresh air and fun as well. Seven Athletes Qualify for District Track Solanco track teams took one relay and two individuals to the District Three Track and Field Championships at Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University this past weekend. Unfortunately they came up short in their bid to grab a medal (top 8) and qualify for the PIAA meet this weekend. The 4x400 relay team of juniors Dom Messano, Austin Woods and Colin Althoff, along with senior Angel Morales, were seeded eighth with a 3:27.07. They were just off that mark, clocking a 3:35.79 and finished 15th overall. For the girls’, Alana Yoder, also a junior, ran a 59.96 in the 400 meter run and finished in 16th place. She was seeded ninth with a 59.28. Senior Troyanna Miller, coming off a fourth place finish at the League Meet, was seeded 16th in the shot put with a 35-3. She didn’t quite match that distance but moved up in the rankings, settling for 12th place with a 33-8.5.

World War II History Group To Meet The World War II Oral History Club will welcome speaker Don Witmer to its meeting on Tuesday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. Witmer, a Lancaster native, served as a torpedo man in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Twiggs, which would join the Pacific Fleet in 1944. The ship was hit once, repaired, and then hit

again a few months later, and it sunk enveloped in flames. Witmer was among the 188 survivors. The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month (except for December) at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Meetings are open to the public. For more information, readers may call 717-319-3430.

The Solanco track and field team had seven athletes: kneeling (from left) Troyana Miller, Alana Yoder; and standing, Jose Silva-Serrano, Angel Daniel, Austin Woods, Dom Messano and Colin Althoff, compete in last weekend’s District Three Championships at Shippensburg University.

Among the works students viewed were Leonardo da Vinci’s “Ginevra de’ Benci” at the National Gallery of Art and pieces from Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Pulse” series at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. At the Freer/Sackler Galleries of Asian Art, students

explored contemporary installations as well as the exhibition “Encountering the Buddha,” which included the Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room, a Sri Lankan stupa, and Buddhist art objects from Afghanistan, India, Southeast Asia, China and Japan. At the Renwick Gallery, students interacted with the Renwick Invitational 2018, which features pieces by four contemporary artists who address social justice

in their work. Students also explored David Best’s “Temple,” which transforms the second floor of the Renwick Gallery into a glowing temple where visitors can reflect and interact with the work by leaving personal messages on wooden placards in various locations within the temple. Students also enjoyed the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which features the Yoshino cherry trees in full bloom.

Team member Dave Plastino and his friend Gene Snook plan to smoke a whole pig. Meals containing a pork sandwich, a bag of chips, and a water bottle will be sold from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. or supplies run out, whichever happens first. After 3 p.m., any pork left over will be sold in bulk quantities. Folks may purchase tickets for the pig roast by calling Dave at 717-371-6153. The yard sale will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dave’s wife, Evelma Plastino, is coordinating the yard sale, and she will sell individually priced variety baskets to benefit the Kirby-Smith Believers. Folks may start setting up as early as 5 a.m., Evelma said. “I’m always the early bird,” she remarked. “I like yard sales.” The event will be held rain or shine. Last year, vendors set up inside the church building because it was raining. There is a cost to rent a space, and the funds will go to Living Stones. For most of those years, the group participated in the Relay For Life of Southern Lancaster County, but the event was consolidated into the Relay For Life of Lancaster County two years ago. Last year was the first time the team participated in the much bigger event, which is the secondlargest Relay For Life event in the world, reported team captain Pat LeFever. The Kirby-Smith Believers raised $22,000 last year, ranking them seventh out of 98 teams in totals. “That was great,” LeFever said, sharing that the team’s best fundraisers are a Zumba event and a Valentine’s Day heart-shaped sandtart cookie sale. The group also sends letters to friends and family members asking for contributions. “We’re always looking for new members (with other ideas),” LeFever said. “We do a lot for a little team.” This year’s Relay will be held at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8. A total of 104 teams are expected to participate. “The highlight of Relay is honoring the survivors and remembering those we’ve lost to cancer. This year, there’s a lot of emphasis on caregivers: They play an important role,” LeFever said. Another special aspect of Relay is the cake auction, which will be held on June 7 at 7:30 p.m. “We make a lot of money doing that because we donate a lot of things,” LeFever commented, especially recognizing team member Dottie Moser’s contribution. “Dottie’s fudge has brought $250 and $300 a pound (at previous auctions).” Proceeds from the Relay For Life of Lancaster County go to the American Cancer Society, whose mission is to free the world of cancer. For more information, readers may visit www.relayforlife.org or call LeFever at 717-951-8994.

For the ninth year in a row, Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., Lancaster, received a grant from the Renée B. Fisher Foundation, a private foundation located in Green Farms, Conn. The grant, totaling $5,500, will allow the Lancaster Public Library to distribute hundreds of vouchers to teachers in Lancaster city. Teachers use the vouchers to purchase thousands of books and other materials to enrich their classroom libraries. Teachers may redeem their vouchers at the Lancaster Public Library’s three annual book sales and the library’s two bookstore locations, all operated by the Friends of the Lancaster Public Library.

In 2018, with the foundation’s support, Lancaster Public Library provided $4,810 in complimentary books to teachers in the School District of Lancaster and to Head Start teachers with classrooms in Lancaster city. The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Lancaster Public Library through fundraising activities, new programming, and promoting understanding and appreciation of the library’s role in a diverse community. For more information about the Friends, their bookstores, and the book sales, readers may visit http://lancasterpubliclibrary .org/library-friends.

Berdos will lead the rehearsals, and his wife, Deborah, will serve as rehearsal accompanist. Berdos is an accomplished director and, in 2014, he was a guest conductor at the Ocean Grove Choir Festival. “When I started this position (at Memorial UMC) in January, several of the choir members knew me from my conducting there,” Berdos said. He noted that about 15 singers from Memorial are planning to participate

in the festival. “We are spreading the word around the county and welcome any (number) of singers,” he added. Folks who would like to learn more about the Ocean Grove Choir Festival may visit www.oceangrove.org/choir-singers. Berdos asks that anyone who will attend the regional rehearsals at Memorial UMC email him at tom@quarryville.church so that he can prepare the rehearsal space.
