OnApril 27, Envirothon clubs from high schools across Lancaster County sent teams of students to participate in the annual Envirothon competition at Lancaster County Central Park. Students competed in five categories: forestry, soils, aquatics,
wildlife and current issues. One of Solanco High School’s teams, The Lorax, earned first place in the wildlife category. The Lorax comprised students Nolan Lewis, Alex Westwood, Brayden Swope, Caleb Cutler and Nicholas Mohler.
Each category required students to complete different activities during the competition. In the
forestry category, students had to identify certain types of trees. For soils, participants classified different types of soil by their characteristics. In the wildlife category, students identified bird calls, animal tracks and pelts. Similar to the wildlife category, the aquatics station required students to point out various sea creatures. In the
current events category, students needed to display knowledge about a specific topic, which changes each year. This year, the topic was climate change.
The Envirothon teams started preparing for the competition at the beginning of the school year, meeting once or twice a week during students’ study period. Five

The Quarryville Fire Department will host its first car show on Saturday, June 24, at Memorial Park, 297 Park Ave., Quarryville. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it will include live entertainment, food vendors and prize drawings.
Members of the public are invited to enter vehicles such as vintage cars and antique tractors in the show. Vehicles will be able to be entered by donation.
Food will be available to purchase from vendors such as Bulldawg BBQ, The Fry Shack and Premium Shaved Ice, and live entertainment will be provided by a DJ. Attendees will have an opportunity to enter several 50/50 prize drawings throughout the event, and proceeds will benefit the Quarryville Fire Department.
Registration is not required for the show; anyone interested in participating may arrive at Memorial Park with his or her vehicle on the day of the event. The Quarryville Fire Department decided to introduce the car show this year in addition to its regular fundraisers such as food drives, as well as other community events. “We’re looking forward to bringing people together and having fun with the community,” said Jason Hess, a fire police officer from the Quarryville Fire Department.

The fire department has prioritized its community engagement by hosting other events in the past; in April, it hosted a family fun night to give the community an opportunity to meet its firefighters and learn about their work. Firefighters, special division members and fire police officers answered questions and offered demonstrations with personnel equipment, fire trucks and rescue tools. “The goal was to bridge the gap between the community and members of the fire department,” Hess said. “We had over 150 people show up, and many sent us thank you cards and said that they learned a lot.” The funds raised from the car show will replenish the fire department’s general expense fund, which covers costs for the replacement of damaged equipment, building maintenance, truck payments and insur-
ance. Certain tools, such as the Jaws of Life, can cost upward of $10,000. For more information, visit www.qfd57.com.

BY MONA STEINHAUER
The softball team opened the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament with a home game against Section Three runnerup Manheim Central (13-7) on Friday, May 12 and quickly
took control. A six-run second inning erased a 1-0 deficit and fueled a 9-1 victory.
“It was somewhat what we expected,” said head coach Brett Miller. “Their pitcher has thrown well enough for them to be competitive. We just hit
the ball very well and they had some costly errors. It was a playoff victory and an experience we needed to build upon.”
Winning pitcher Anna Sexton (7k, 0w) sparked the sixrun second with a full count single and scored on Delaney Gote’s double. Zoey Evans and Ava Martin connected for back-to-back RBI triples, pushing the lead to 3-1. Kira Roark’s misplayed hit and Holly Grube’s two out double made it 5-1 before Sexton (24) stepped to the plate again, this time delivering a run scoring single.
After three scoreless innings, Solanco refocused and plated three more runs with Roark’s two-run base hit doing the most damage. Roark finished with 3RBI on the day.
“We lost a little focus there for a couple of innings but got the result we wanted,” Miller said. “Anna settled down after that first inning and held them down. We still need to be more consistent.”
Monday Solanco traveled to Millersville for a semifinals date with Section One runner-up Warwick (16-5). Both teams finished with eight hits, but the Warriors made good on three home runs and took advantage of four Solanco errors to finish on top, 11-4.
“I thought we were playing the game faster than it was meant to be played,” said Miller. “We were rushing, both offensively and defensively.”
Warwick set the tone early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on a walk and a one out, two run homer.
Solanco countered just as quickly, scoring three in the bottom half, but that lead did not last for long as Warwick regained control in the top of the second and never looked back.
Josie Janssen’s one out triple sparked the bottom of the first. She scored on Grube’s full count triple to right center. Sara DeFrancesco’s fielder’s choice plated Grube and Gote’s full count double pushed in Sexton who reached on a base hit.
Warwick took advantage of two errors, a sac bunt, and a solo homer to take the lead for good. They picked up a single run in the fourth and then broke the game open with five in the fifth, using a
two-run homer and three passed ball steals of home to put the game out of reach.
Solanco did try to rally in the fourth and scratched out one more run but it wasn’t enough.
“Sometimes experiences come at a cost,” said Miller. “It was one game and now we prepare for the next one, where we’ll have the home field advantage. We could pick up one game, two games or four games but we have to get that first one.”
TRACK
The track team earned a handful of medals, turned in a couple of personal records and set a new school record on a wet and dreary day at the
Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships held Friday and Saturday at Hempfield High School.
The girls’ 4x100 relay team of Katie Urbine, Oli Oravitz, Sarah Bard, and Emma Housekeeper broke their own school record with a 48.81 and finished second behind McCaskey (48.08).
“They took another second off their time and are currently ranked third in the district,” lauded head coach Jen McDowell.
Oravitz medaled in all three of her individual events as well. She was third in the long jump (17-7), fourth in the 100 (12.61) and fifth in the triple jump (35-8.5). “Both of her jumps and her 100 time are new personal records,” said McDowell. “And Emma Housekeeper had a half-second PR in the 200 which will get her into districts.”
Also placing for the girls was Urbine and Martha Weaver. Urbine, the top seed in the pole vault, settled for third place, clearing 11-6 and Weaver threw 34-10.25 to claim eighth place in the shot put.
Leading the boys’ team was Josiah Forren with a sixthplace triple jump of 41-11 and Noah Baber who finished seventh in the high jump, clearing 5-10, and was eighth in the long jump (20-10).
“Our throwers struggled a bit,” said McDowell. “But Josiah’s jump was a new PR.”
Braden Caldwell was just out of the medal round, placing ninth in the shot put (46-7.5).

Recliners
months prior to the competition, students received a list of resources to help them prepare for the specific challenges that were issued for this year’s event. Each member of the team was tasked with researching one of the categories, although the members of the club assisted each other with research. “We combined the identification stuff for wildlife and aquatics and tested each other every club period,” said Westwood, who mainly researched the wildlife category. “Eventually it was ingrained in our brains.”
Cutler was assigned the current issues category, which requires students to employ deductive reasoning and logic to answer questions on the topic. This year, contestants needed to identify the human causes of climate change, recognize which countries have played a large role in environmental issues and classify certain types of greenhouse gases. “It’s harder to study for than the other categories. You just have to be prepared to answer the questions once you get there,” Cutler said.
Both Cutler and Westwood joined Envirothon club last year, after many of the previous members graduated. They were invited to join by club co-adviser, Jessica Tipping, who teaches chemistry at Solanco High School. Tipping runs the Envirothon club with her coadviser, Stephanie Jones, who teaches earth and space science at the school. “Our teams scored high in a lot of categories, but the students excelled in the wildlife category,” Tipping said. “We were able to get a lot of the questions that other teams missed.”
As members of the Envirothon club, students are able to get hands-on experience with different aspects of environmental science.
Cutler and Westwood, who are both seniorsl, plan to apply what they’ve learned from the club in their careers after high school. Cutler plans to pursue a degree in the medical field, and Westwood hopes to study wildlife biology. “I would encourage other kids to join the club,” Cutler said. “It gave me a great background, and it was a fun way to ground myself further in environmental science.”
