Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash
In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-AWish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16.
Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.
In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Clowns gathered for a photo at a past Mother’s Day Truck Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Convoy, which raises funds for Make-A-Wish. The 2020 Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware convoy has been rescheduled as a virtual event on Aug. 16. and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On The decision was based on concern for the Make-Abehalf of the children and families we serve, we thank Wish children and the members of the community who everyone who donated for their dedication to the visit the event. “2020 Lancaster County Little Miss Agriculture USA” might be a big name for a young girl, but titleholder Riley LaBow was eager to take it on. Riley was just 7 years old when she applied for the title with the help of her mother, Kaire LaBow. The youngster celebrated her eighth birthday on May 17. Kaire noted that Riley became interested in agriculture, particularly soil cultivation, as a result of the family’s box gardening practice. “Dad (Craig) is enjoying this as well, with the box garden,” Kaire remarked. “He’s been getting (Riley) out there to pull weeds.” The LaBows added chickens to their agricultural ventures at their home in a Landisville development last year. “Raising the chickens last year was awesome,” Kaire remarked. She pointed out that their place of residence was not a drawback in Riley’s application to be Lancaster County Little Miss Agriculture USA. “You don’t have to live on a farm to promote agriculture, and that’s what we’re doing: spreading the word about local farmers,” Kaire explained. “I thought this would be a great experience for her - for the whole family, really.” See Little Miss Agriculture pg 2
More than 10 years ago, Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, and her board members began holding a Sisters and Brothers Picnic for children who had a sibling who was lost

during pregnancy or infancy. This year’s event was to be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. A special part of the picnic is a chance to visit an area inside Dutch Wonderland that has been designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, See Sweet Pea Project pg 2
Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.

Riley was accepted for the title in December, and she received her crown around Christmas. The sash arrived in January. “It’s a beautiful crown. She loves it,” Kaire said. Kaire noted that Riley was excited about giving a presentation to her second-grade class at Landisville Primary Center earlier this year. The youngster talked about different parts of agriculture, discussing the agronomic process of soil to seeds to produce, as well as highlights of dairy farming. “She got the kids involved,” Kaire said. “It was pretty impressive.” The LaBows visited the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January, and Riley met other titleholders from across the state as well as Gov. Tom Wolf. “She loves making new friends,” Kaire said. “She’s really missing them.” See Little Miss Agriculture pg 6
Sunday, May 31st, 2020 at 4:00 P.M. The Speaker William Slabaugh has served as a pastor for a number of years and has been involved in various cross-cultural missions. Currently, William and Sharon are serving in Chios, Greece, ministering to the Middle-Eastern refugees. He will be speaking on Luke 14 where Jesus gives the cost of what it means to be His disciple, illustrating this with the story of one Muslim’s journey to Christ, from the lineage of the queen of Sheba to the lineage of Christ.

Cole recalled the struggles she endured facing her first Mother’s Day after losing her daughter. “When you lose a child, you feel like you’re the only one who ever suffered through this,” she said. “(It can be beneficial to have) a place you can scroll through quietly without having to (leave your home), and yet know you are part of something … you’re not alone.” “It gives a sense of unity,” Cole continued. “Even though we didn’t join together and put the flowers in the ground the way we usually do, it’s pretty nice to have some beautiful pictures to look at online.” Cole said she is looking forward to scheduling more Sweet Pea events in the fall, but in the meantime, she is glad the virtual flower garden is available for bereaved family members, especially as Father’s Day approaches. and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “We are still their mothers. That deserves to be remembered and celebrated,” wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated posted a photograph of a flower on Facebook or Insta-

Quarryville since its founding in 1898, starting at a different building on East State Street and later moving to the former J. Haines Dickinson mansion. The business was most recently owned by Fred Reynolds, great-grandson of the founder. Reynolds employee Murray Miller, a licensed funeral director, will continue working at the Quarryville business. Steve and Jewel, both licensed funeral directors, now own three funeral homes, the others being located in Christiana and Paradise. Prior to their purchase, the Christiana and Paradise locations were owned by cousins Carl Brown Jr. and Lee Brown, respectively. The Christiana business is now operated by the Shiverys’ son Blake, who is one of four children, and his wife, Chelcie. Other family members involved in Steve and Jewel’s businesses include son-in-law Jordan Frey and his wife, Grace, and Jordan and Grace’s daughter, Paige Taylor. Steve and Jewel have worked in the funeral services field for quite a while, having purchased Carl’s business in 1994 and Lee’s business in 2007. Steve had worked for Carl throughout his school years, beginning when he was 12. For more information about Reynolds and Shivery Funeral Home, readers may visit www.reynoldsandshivery.com.

Riley has been participating in online meetings with other agriculture royalty since the shutdown began on March 15. The 2020 Pennsylvania Miss Agriculture USA competition happened to be scheduled just in time, taking place at the Altoona Grand Hotel on March 14. Riley placed second in formal wear and third in interview. “I thought she did really well for being her first competition,” Kaire remarked. “It was a really great experience. We didn’t go into the competition with expectations. … There are a lot of kids who live on farms, so they’re living (the farming life) every day.” The plan for Riley’s reign is to use her crown to be an “AGvocate” for agriculture, Kaire said. To round out her knowledge, Riley was treated to a private tour of Kreider Farms in Manheim, and she was hoping to visit Culton Organics in Silver Spring. Riley also has copies of an agriculture-related book that she planned to read aloud at local libraries and then donate to their collections. “We want to give back,” Kaire said. Originally, Riley had hoped to promote agriculture at events and meetings throughout Lancaster County. The opportunities have disappeared because of the stay-at-home orders, but she hopes to be part of the Elizabethtown Fair and is exploring the possibility of participating in other local fairs. Kaire welcomes public appearance inquiries by email at CKL7880@verizon.net. Anyone interested in participating in Miss Agriculture USA is invited to email Kaire as well.

Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the See Make-A-WIsh pg 12

JBT Funds Paycheck Protection Program Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) announced that the bank has issued $13.7 million in Small Business Association (SBA)guaranteed loans to 269 businesses and nonprofit organizations based in Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The bank’s participation in the SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has been able to guarantee a paycheck to more than 2,300 local families during the COVID-19 pandemic. While JBT had not been an SBA-approved lender prior to the COVID-19 crisis, the bank quickly pursued necessary approvals in order to be able to support its many business clients and their employees. During the first round of PPP funding in early April, JBT secured 59 loans valued at $4.2 million. When the second round of funding was available, the totals grew to 269 loans valued at $13.7 million, as of April 30. Founded in 1873, JBT currently has assets of $655 million and 14 banking locations, including its newest branch, which opened recently in Robesonia. 12 - ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition - May 27, 2020
Light Up The Night Event Honors Class Of 2020 Solanco High School was one of several schools in the LancasterLebanon League that concurrently honored the Class of 2020 and the athletes who missed their spring season with a Light Up the Night event. May 20 was chosen for the event, not only because of the “20” in the date, but because it would have lined up with the official end of the league’s spring events. The participating schools lit up their stadium lights and scoreboards, setting up their respective scoreboards the same way - Home Score 20 and Visitor Score 20 to honor the Class of 2020. They then ran the clock for 20 minutes to symbolize the ending of the sports season. Some schools also set the clock as a fourth and 19 as a message to the COVID-19 virus that it is fourth down and the virus will be beaten soon. At Solanco, athletic director Anthony Hall started the clock at the appointed time. While respecting social distancing guidelines, community members participated by sounding their car horns and air horns as they drove through or parked in the parking lot or as they drove by on Solanco Road. When the clock ran down, the stadium lights went off. The scoreboard remained lit up for several more minutes, with 2020 still displayed. Other participating schools included Warwick, Cocalico, and Lampeter-Strasburg.
In honor of the Class of 2020 and the athletes who missed their spring season, the lights and scoreboard at Solanco High School’s stadium were turned on for approximately 20 minutes on May 20. Several other schools in the LancasterLebanon League also turned on their stadium lights and scoreboards at the same time.

from pg 7 organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-AWish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes.
