Solanco Class Of 2019 Prepares For Graduation By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Friday, June 7, will be a busy day for the approximately 275 members of the Class of 2019 at Solanco High School. The seniors will don caps and gowns to process through the district’s elementary and middle schools, and they will also enjoy a class picnic and have a final practice for commencement, which will be held at 7 p.m. in the school’s athletic stadium, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. “It (will be) a fun day,” commented class treasurer Brooke Wheeler. Considering the upcoming milestone, the class motto seems especially poignant. It reads, “Our lives are before us, our pasts are behind us, but our memories are forever with us.” “Graduation will be our final time together before class reunions,” said class president Joshua Canale. “I’m totally going to cry,” class

vice president Kyle Osborne predicted. The class officers, including secretary Lauryn McNutt and historian Logan Yaletchko, praised their classmates for being good citizens. “We have a really good reputation as one of the best classes at Solanco,” Joshua said. “We have really good personalities,” Logan added. “Teachers like to connect with us. It changes the group dynamic.” Among the officers, English teacher Leslie McRobbie, math teacher Lisa Schell, and guidance counselor Patricia McTaggart are favorite faculty members. “Mrs. Schell has always been a supportive teacher in and out of the classroom,” Brooke said. “Mrs. McRobbie is a woman of kindness and wit,” Lauryn remarked, adding that McRobbie helped her discover her identity and McTaggart was instrumental in determining a direction in life. See Class Of 2019 pg 5

Solanco High School senior officers, including (from left) Logan Yaletchko, Brooke Wheeler, Joshua Canale, Lauryn McNutt, and Kyle Osborne, will graduate with the rest of the Class of 2019 on June 7.

Shredding Event Will Support Scholarships Huffnagle Park Concerts Announced The Huffnagle Park Concert Series will resume this summer with performances on four Saturdays. The family-friendly events will be presented free of charge, thanks to support from the Quarryville Lions Club. The concerts will begin at 7 p.m.

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) members are looking forward to hosting the eighth annual document shredding event rain or shine on Friday, June 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event raises funds for student scholarships. “It’s fun. We’re all volunteers,” said event chair Holly Filius. “It really is giving back to the community so kids have the opportunity to meet some of their expenses.” For a donation, members of the public may bring sensitive documents to the shredding truck, which will be parked at the site of the former Burkholder’s Used Cars, 2539 N. Willow Street Pike (Route 222), Willow Street. Vehicles should enter on Beaver Valley Pike (Route 272). Folks with more than 10 boxes of documents are considered bulk shredding clients and should drop See Shredding Event pg 9

and will be held at Huffnagle Park, which is bordered by Oak Lane and Wagner Drive in Quarryville. In the event of rain, the performances will be moved indoors to Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. See Concert Series pg 10

Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce members (front, from left) Joanne Platt, Holly Filius, and (back) Zadok and Mandy Leggett invite the public to bring documents containing sensitive information to be shredded securely during the eighth annual shredding event in Willow Street on June 7.

Seasons, a Celtic family band, will kick off the Huffnagle Park Concert Series in Quarryville on June 8.

Mules Top Mechanicsburg, Fall to Pioneers by Mona Steinhauer

After falling in the opening round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs, Solanco’s baseball team had one full week to prepare for the District Three Class 5A tournament. Though it took a full seven innings, the No. 7 seed Mules (16-6) got past No. 10 Mechanicsburg, 4-3, on a walkoff double by Tim Fetterman last Tuesday afternoon. Thursday they faced a more familiar opponent in Lampeter-Strasburg, but the No. 2 seed Pioneers avenged their second

loss of the season with a 4-2 home win. Monday, the Mules enjoyed a 3-0 lead going into the seventh inning but the Wildcats finally solved Hayden Fox and tied the game on three singles, a pair of sacrifice fly RBI’s and a walk. Solanco made quick work in the bottom half. Dawson Kreider and Seth Harnish worked back-to-back walks and Kreider scored on Fetterman’s walk-off double, sending the Mules to the quarterfinals opposite Section Two foe, Lampeter-Strasburg. “I was happy for Tim, one of our

senior leaders, and proud of him getting the big hit for us,” said head coach Tom Fish. Solanco broke in front with one run in the first inning. Fetterman, with two outs, was issued a full count walk, stole second and score on Mike May’s base hit. The Mules left one on in the

second, two on in the fourth and pushed two across in the sixth for that 3-0 lead. Fetterman sent a one-out, first pitch double down the left field line, took third on a passed ball, and with two outs, scored on Joel McGuire’s base knock. Designated hitter Hunter Shaw and Sam Buckwalter were both issued walks with Shaw’s loading the bases and Buckwalter’s pushing in the third run of the game. “Tim, batting in the three hole, was the key to our offense,” said Fish. “I wanted him to swing away there in the seventh with two on and no outs. He and Mike May (on deck) have been our best hitters all season,” he explained. “If we bunt, Mike likely would have been walked, as he was in the sixth inning, and I’d be taking the bat out of the hands of our two top guys. So, I was happy where we were in the order and happy for Tim. “It turned out to be the kind of game we got accustomed to playing all year,” Fish continued. “Take an early lead with a quality at bat (Fetterman single), a stolen base and a two out hit. Rely on one of our two ace pitchers, Hayden Fox (5K, 2W, 7H), nearly perfect through six and play good defense. Then, as we tend to do, we make it interesting in the end.”

Solanco’s Tim Fetterman turns on the high fastball for the gamewinning RBI in the seventh inning of the Mules’ 4-3, District Three playoff-opening win over Mechanicsburg last Monday in Quarryville.

In Lampeter Thursday, the Mules gave up single runs in each of the first two innings, the second being a home run by Patrick Holmes, and that proved to be the difference as Solanco matched L-S run for run through the rest of the game. “It was a great game played by two great teams,” said Fish. “We just ran into a team that played just a bit better than us.” The visitors recorded their first two hits and turned them into their first run of the game, cutting Lampeter’s lead in half, 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Sam Buckwalter singled, took second on a throwing error, and came home on a Zach Fritz base hit. Dawson reached on a hit by pitch and “things were looking up,” said Fish. “Unfortunately we hit into a 4-6-3 double play that ended the inning and the threat.” L-S scored one in the bottom of the fifth and Solanco answered. Fetterman opened with a triple and scored on a Mike May groundout. “But that was it,” Fish noted. “We didn’t have another baserunner. L-S made a pitching change (Dylan Byler) and he shut us down after Tim’s triple. They added a single run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-2 victory.” Corey Stively pitched a complete game, issuing two walks against five strikeouts and that home run. “I’m very proud of our guys,” said Fish. “L-S is a heck of a team. We got them once but couldn’t pull it off

again. We have ten seniors and I’m proud of each one of them. We accomplished a lot this season,” he continued. “We got over the “Ephrata hump” and knocked them out of the league playoffs. We beat L-S on their senior night in front of a huge crowd, and we won our first district game since 2007. “It’s a lot to be proud of. This is a special group.”

Brooke’s advice for incoming high school freshmen will also be appropriate for the members of the Class of 2019 as they disperse to their respective life journeys. “You can make friends with everyone if you try,” she said. “Some of the best (friends) are people you never would have expected.” “The path of life is uncertain,” Kyle related. “Never would I ever expect to be involved so much. Enjoy the path and expand your resume.” “Follow your own passion and do not rush through anything,” Lauryn advised. “Live in the moment.” Joshua agreed, saying, “Do what makes you happy and do not get too stressed, but do challenge yourself.” “When times get hard, just keep pushing forward,” Logan recommended. Several of the class officers will have speaking roles during commencement, and several others will hand a flower to each graduate. The class valedictorian and salutatorian will speak as well. Alumnus Joseph Bledsoe will give the keynote address. The stadium will open at 5:30 p.m. on June 7. Seats may not be reserved before that time. More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett

Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio personality Lisa Landis-Blowers, also included a silent auction, a mini manicure station provided by the Lancaster School of Cosmetology, and a heart-healthy lunch. Event co-chairs included Elizabeth Eschbach, cardiology supervisor with UPMC Pinnacle, and Stacey Hankey, chief executive officer of Lanco Federal Credit Union. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Go Red for Women movement. For more information about the 2020

off their loads between noon and 3 p.m. The boxes’ contents will be shredded between smaller loads. For more information about bulk shredding, readers may contact Filius at 717-475-4129. “Almost every dollar goes back into the community,” Filius remarked, noting that after costs for the event are covered, the remainder of the proceeds goes into an education fund. The SLCCC aims to annually award three $1,000 scholarships to local graduating seniors to support business-oriented plans, whether that is attending college or a technical or trade school or even becoming an entrepreneur. Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor students are eligible for the scholarships, but no one from Penn Manor has applied in recent years. In addition to supporting local youths, the shredding event is a service to the community by providing a secure way to dispose of sensitive materials. “People can bring more and shred it faster than doing it at home,” Filius said. “It’s a really inexpensive way to shred confidential documents.” Typically, between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds of materials are processed during the event. “We get a lot of bulk shredding from law offices and home care too,” Filius commented. At the event, SLCCC members will unload

“Networking is great because it’s a small chamber,” Filius said. “There’s a lot of intra-chamber business,” added board member Mandy Leggett, sharing how SLCCC members like to refer clients to other members. In addition to hosting the shredding event, the SLCCC supports the Solanco Fair and assists the parade committee and hosts an annual Christmas tree lighting in Quarryville on the first Friday in December. Mixers are held throughout the year at members’ businesses or offices, a members-only banquet is held in March, and a members-only bonfire is held at Black Rock Retreat in October. For information about the SLCCC, readers may visit www.southernlancaster chamber.org or call secretary Keith Kaufman at 717-786-5167.

boxes from vehicles in a drive-through line. Folks who want to watch their documents enter the shredder may park their cars to the side. To facilitate quicker shredding, documents should be as loose as possible. Area organizations focused on veterans, active-duty military personnel and law enforcement members joined with Heroes on the Water and Warriors on the Water Ltd. for a major event at the Octoraro Reservoir in Kirkwood on May 18. This is the fifth year for Heroes on the Water to host the event at the reservoir. The nonprofit organization helps wounded warriors relax, rehabilitate and reintegrate into their communities through kayak fishing and time spent outdoors. Heroes on the Water provided free fishing kayaks for participants to use, and attendees were also welcome to fish from the shore. As the result of a special waiver, they were not required to have a fishing license to participate in the event. The program was open to veterans, current military members, reservists and law enforcement personnel and their families. In coordination with the Chester Water Authority, Jim Neary’s Bait and Tackle provided free use of motorboats, row boats, additional kayaks, rental rods and bait. The day also included a pig roast, barbecue, live music by the MOE Blues Band, volleyball, horseshoes, cornhole and plenty of social time as attendees enjoyed the day and relaxed. Ser-

vicemen and women and first responders also had an opportunity to win a free kayak. “It’s a beautiful day out here; we have the biggest turnout we’ve ever had,” Neary said, noting the event attracted more than 300 participants. “We got a lot more vets, a lot more law enforcement coming out, and that’s what it’s all about - giving these guys a care-free day, just relaxing with their families.” Also on hand were representatives from 15 different nonprofit groups, including American Legion - Roy Gibson Post 535 of Oxford and Woerth It Hollow Farm, which offers farming programs for veterans. Through their involvement with the Heroes on the Water event, Jim and Gina Neary were inspired to start their own nonprofit organization, Warriors on the Water Ltd. According to www.warriorson thewaterltd.com, the mission of the organization is “to build outdoor therapeutic programs that best help serve our military and law enforcement officers and their families.” Through Warriors on the Water Ltd., the Nearys will be hosting events at the Octoraro Reservoir once each month from June through October.
