Bridlepath Equine Center slates 5K fundraiser, chicken barbecue

Bridlepath Equine Center, 787 Valley Road, Quarryville, will hold its inaugural Race Day fundraiser and chicken barbecue on Saturday, June 29.

A 5K run will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a 2-mile, pet-friendly walk at 10:30 a.m. and the Kids Giddy-Up Run at 11 a.m. The chicken barbecue portion of the fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m. until supplies run out.

Participants in the 5K race will run through sections of the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail, and the pet-friendly stroll will take walkers along Bridlepath’s sensory trail, which the organization incorporates in equine therapy sessions. Bridlepath will partner with Pretzel City Sports to time the 5K.

The sensory trail includes various stations designed to help

participants improve their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.

During sessions, riders take their horses through objects such as pool noodles, attempt to throw a ball into a basket and trot through a shallow part of the creek. “These are all things that are fun to do, so the riders often don’t realize they’re working on these skills,” said Danielle Denlinger, founder and executive director of Bridlepath Equine Center. “We wanted to utilize our property for the fundraiser, and we thought it would be fun to watch guests enjoy it and see some of what we do.”

Children ages 2 to 8 may participate in the Kids Giddy-Up Run, and the first 100 youngsters who register will receive stick animals for galloping across a horse-riding arena.

Acorn Acres announces expansion campaign

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, is about to make history. In May, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director, Betsy Shank, announced a new campaign to secure funding for a major expansion. In addition to enhancing Acorn Acres’ level of care and capacity for animals, the project will make the organization Lancaster County’s first commercial wildlife facility.

Acorn Acres’ expansion will include an additional facility

United Disabilities Services (UDS), 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. The event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about the organization’s service dog program and the many

a look behind the scenes, but also to make some new friends,” said UDS service dogs manager Lori Breece. “Not everyone can afford a sponsorship, but we could use (donations of) dog food.”

During the open house, UDS will share information on sponsorships and other ways people can support the service dog program. The event will include various demonstrations from dogs and clients, and staff members and volunteers will be present to answer guests’ questions.

UDS invites the public to learn about the value of having service dogs in local schools and communities during its open house.

Since 2017, UDS has expanded its service area to assist clients within five hours of Lancaster County, including individuals from Delaware, New York City, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. “If someone is within five hours of us, we can help them - no matter what state they live in,” Breece said.

In addition to extending its coverage area beyond Lancaster,

UDS has continued to partner with schools throughout the county to place support dogs in every school district from Warwick to Solanco. Breece said the organization recently began talks with the School District of Lancaster to bring dogs to schools in the heart of the county. “We’re discovering that these districts now want a dog in every building,” added Breece. “It’s a domino effect; from the moment kids are greeted by a dog when they get off the bus, their anxiety levels have been reduced. It’s a beautiful waterfall effect that goes through the whole school, and we couldn’t be more proud of it.”

The primary goal of UDS’ open house is to bring in supporters to help with the long-term financial sustainability of the service dog program. When training service dogs, UDS invests $25,000 to $30,000 per pup over the course of a 22-month process. Clients who receive dogs are only charged $5,000 of the total cost.

“We’re always in the red, but it’s important to be good financial stewards as we try to help the community,” said Breece. “I’d love to see a dog in every school, and I believe we’re on our way. It’s the power of a wet nose and a wagging tail.”

Bible2School offers at-home resources

Bible2School has a mission to introduce elementary school students to Jesus through programs held off-site during the school day. When summer rolls around, the program continues to support families looking for Christian-focused curricula and resources. The organization offers a podcast, a blog and a variety of at-home resources.

“We are going on three years of doing a weekly podcast,” said Megan Risser, director of marketing and advancement officer for Bible2School. “It’s released on Tuesdays, and each week we chat with a different guest regarding a variety of topics, but they are all ways of sharing God’s Word with kids.” Topics on the “You CAN Tell the Children” podcast have ranged from praying for your child’s future spouse to establishing family devotion time.

“Each episode is under a half hour, and we don’t do ads,” Risser explained. “In the middle of each episode, we take a short break, and we answer a question from a Bible2School kid.” These prerecorded questions could include inquiries such as “How do I get to heaven?” or “If God created everything, who created God?” she said.

Once a month, Bible2School updates its blog with topics similar to the ones covered in the podcast. “Some people prefer to read, some prefer to listen, so we’re looking at different types of ways to get our resources out to people,” Risser said. “We want to offer practical, useful topics.”

Bible2School at-home resources include a mix of materials created in house as well as links to partner organizations that share a similar mission.

“We want to provide free resources that can make learning about the Bible easy at home,” Risser said, noting that resources include crafts, skits and science experiments. “We provide all of the instructions for the activity, and most include a guided conversation. We want to give parents exactly what they need to connect the dots for their kids.”

Most of the at-home resources are geared toward elementary school-age children, since Bible2School provides school-year programming to students in second, third and fourth grades. However, Risser noted, much of it could be tweaked to serve middle school students as well.

Workforce Development Board creates kiosks

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) recently placed 35 educational kiosks in schools and local organizations throughout the county. The kiosks provide students, job seekers, and other community members with access to information about career pathways, training programs, and career opportunities within the county with local businesses.

The kiosks are placed in strategic locations, including 27 public and private high schools, community services locations, public libraries, and the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County.

The LCWDB partnered with the Lancaster Chamber to host ribbon-cutting events during the week on May 7 at various locations.

The kiosks feature a variety of interactive features, including a career assessment tool to help users identify their interests and skills, information about in-demand jobs and industries in Lancaster County, a directory of training programs and educational institutions, a job board with listings for open positions, and connection to the Inspire platform where students and businesses can engage on career exploration opportunities.

The LCWDB will also provide training to school staff members and community partners on how to use the educational kiosks. The goal is to make the kiosks a valuable resource for all Lancaster County residents who are seeking information about career and workforce development opportunities. The content on the kiosk will also be accessible through the Career Ready Lancaster! website at www.careerreadylancaster.com. Companies or organizations that would like to be included on the kiosk may contact Mary Byrd at mbyrd@lancastercounty wib.com.

Bible from pg 5

One of the newest resources from Bible2School is a 22-page guide called “God Was Not Taken Out of Public Schools.” “This is a downloadable tool to educate parents and caretakers on ways their child can confidently live out their faith in public school,” Risser explained. “A lot of parents don’t understand what their kid can do in a public school setting when it comes to their faith, and we’re on a mission to teach people. People feel like they need to leave their faith at the door, and that’s not the case.”

Bible2School began 45 years ago in Manheim Central School District. The program has grown to

more than 100 classes at 45 schools throughout Lancaster County, and the organization has expanded to include programs in Idaho and Tennessee, as well.

“We want to create a program in every state, but we also know that our roots are here in Lancaster. There’s still a significant number of people who have not heard of us or don’t know about our program,” Risser said. “There are kids who are our neighbors who have never heard of Jesus, and we are working to change that.”

Acorn Acres

that will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as fluoroscopy and X-ray machines, as well as an on-site laboratory. The new facility, which is approximately 2,000 square feet, was formerly used as a veterinary office building, and it will allow Acorn Acres to bring in more volunteers, more animals and members of the public who wish to take a look at the many ways it serves the community.

Shank said she initially spoke with Ryan and Ashley Tuma, the owners of the new facility, roughly one year ago about using the space for Acorn Acres. After discussing the potential expansion while Shank was teaching in North Carolina, Ashley suggested the two women meet in person on Feb. 28, unaware that it was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Acorn Acres’ late mascot, Poppy the groundhog. “I said, ‘I hear you, Poppy. I’ll go,” added Shank. Once the details were squared away, Shank officially partnered with Ryan and Ashley to rent the new space and launch the Capacity Campaign.

“I’ve had to turn away animals from Acorn Acres every year because we literally run out of room,” Shank said. “This new facility will allow us to take a higher number of animals, welcome additional volunteers and bring in additional species.” Currently, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and woodchucks; the expansion will enable the organization to extend its care to bats and Penn -

sylvania’s only native marsupial, the Virginia opossum.

Once the new facility is officially up and running, Shank plans to offer tours to members of the public. Due to regulations, wildlife centers are not able to exhibit animals in rehabilitation to prevent them from growing accustomed to human contact. The examination rooms in the new building are equipped with one-sided windows, which will allow guests to see the animals while avoiding direct contact.

Acorn Acres’ primary goal is now to secure funding for the move into the facility and its continued operation. To make a donation online, visit https:// tinyurl.com/AcornAcresExpan sion. For more information or to view other donations options, visit www.acornacreswr.com/ capacity_campaign.
