Library launches largest Summer Reading Program to date
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDNow that the hot weather is here to stay and most schools have ended their classes until autumn, both students and their parents are kicking off all kinds of summer plans. Luckily for members of the Solanco community, Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, recently announced a full roster of events and activities to fill the long summer days.
On June 1, the library launched its Summer Reading Program with a community event that included live entertainment, music and crafts. Attendees were also able to sign up for the program. During the launch day, 50% more people signed up for the reading challenge than last year, which set the previous record for the number of registrants. Until Saturday, Aug. 10, participants
in the 2024 Summer Reading Program may complete reading challenges to earn various prizes.
The Quarryville Library will offer a free book to each reader who completes the program.
“We always track how many people sign up for the first day.
Beforehand, the library staff members take a poll to guess the number of sign-ups. Nobody even came close,” said Sharon Roche, the library’s program manager.
Roche partially credited the large turnout to the number of people who have moved to the area in recent years, in addition to many participants in the infant and toddler programs getting older and looking for new activities. Although the Quarryville Library was unable to sustain its full slate of programs during the coronavirus pandemic, Roche has steadily restored many activities and expanded library offerings
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn June 9, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened its summer membership art show. The exhibit features a variety of artworks by the organization’s members, and it will remain on display in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery until Thursday, July 11.
Each of LCAA’s membership shows incorporate multiple new themes each year, and featured
artists submit their work in the professional or non-professional categories. Each entrant is eligible to receive one award per show, and the award recipients are selected by a panel of judges comprising professional artists such as gallery owners, art professors and accomplished painters. A new panel of judges is selected for each show.
A second exhibit titled “The Four Seasons” is currently on display in the Steinmetz Gallery. The show was opened to any local

The 20th century in particular brought about radical advancement in technology and societies around the globe. over the last three years.
The number of participants in the Summer Reading Program isn’t the only thing that has sharply increased this year; thanks to a grant from Dollar General, the Quarryville Library is able to offer a larger variety of prizes to readers who complete challenges. The grant funding will allow the library to purchase books to give out as prizes, and other prizes include items from several local businesses such as Cherry Crest Adventure
Farm, Strasburg Rail Road, McDonald’s, Isaac’s Restaurants and Penn Cinemas. The library will kick off three book clubs for separate age groups at the end of June. The Beginning Readers Book Club will start on Wednesday, June 19, followed by the Tween/ Teen Book Club on Thursday, June 27, and the Kids Book Club on Friday, June 28. Online registration is required for each club. For more information, visit https://quarryville library.org.

The Arc plans resource fair event
The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will host a Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair and Summer Party on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brickerville Volunteer Fire Company, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz.
A recent study by The Arc of Pennsylvania on health care needs of individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities showed that health care providers are often unsure how to effectively work with and communicate with someone with a disability. Individuals with disabilities can also face challenges when talking to health care providers. The goal of the Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair is to provide both parties the opportunity to interact and learn how to collaborate to improve care. Those who attend may meet various local providers who can serve their health and wellness needs.
Representatives from these providers will staff resource tables. The entities that will be present include ProCare @Home, Well -
care, Disability Empowerment Center, and Lighthouse Vocational Services. Those who attend may also participate in free health screenings, such as blood pressure checks by Bayada.
Enjoying popsicles were participants in The Arc’s Sib Talk groups, a program for children ages 8 to 15 who have a sibling with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
Door prizes will be awarded throughout the event, and the Summer Party will include a child-friendly area with games, crafts, and face painting. Food trucks will be available in the parking lot throughout the event. Admission is free and open to the public rain or shine. Vendor spaces are available.
For more information, contact The Arc at 717-3945251 or info@thearclancleb. org. This event is paid for in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Begun by a group of parents seeking services for their children with disabilities, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon has served Lancaster County for more than 60 years and Lebanon County

Fire company
will commemorate 100 years of service with an open house and community celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. The rain-or-shine event will include live music, local vendors and demonstrations from several emergency service organizations from Willow Street and its neighboring communities.
Demonstrations will include medical helicopters and an antique fire engine, as well as a medical helicopter fly-by if weather permits. Attendees will have an opportunity to complete a small obstacle course and learn about the safest methods of exiting a smoky building. Refreshments will be available to purchase from a variety of food trucks, such as Tri-County Barbecue, Premium Shaved Ice, G’s Oven Fresh Pizza, Auntie Anne’s and Moo Shakes. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available to purchase during the open house, and prizes will include items from a variety
of local businesses.
Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D’Agostino and state Reps. Steven Mentzer and Bryan Cutler will attend the opening ceremony of the event, and a memorial will be set up to honor five members of the Willow Street Fire Company who have died in the line of duty since the department was founded.
“We are a 100% volunteer fire company. Being volunteer-run and lasting 100 years is almost unheard of, but we manage due to community support,” said Jennifer Anastasio, chair of the open house committee.
“We want to celebrate with (members of the community) because of that.”
Although Willow Street Fire Company receives a small portion of its funding from West Lampeter Township, its primary source of funds is acquired via fundraising letters it sends out to the community three times a year. Community dona -
tions help to cover expenses such as building upgrades, apparatus maintenance and safety equipment, allowing the fire company to better serve Willow Street and parts of Pequea and Providence townships. The organization has recently made a few significant improvements to its fire station, including a full-service generator that will allow the facility to function in the event of a complete power outage.
For more information on the fire company, visit www .wsfc512.com. For additional details or updates on the event, search “Willow Street Fire Company” on Facebook.

Program to focus on Lancaster County Quakers
Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, June 15, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Ernest “Ernie” Schreiber will present “The Forgotten History of Quakers in Lancaster County.” Schreiber will recount the history of Quakers in Lancaster County from the first arrival of missionaries in 1658 to the construction of the modern-day Friends Meeting House in 1954. His talk will touch on the Quakers’ involvement in the Revolutionary War, the slave trade, the abolition movement and the Civil War, Prohibition, turn-ofthe-century county government, and World Wars I and II. A question-and-answer period will follow.
Schreiber is the retired executive director of a local newspaper, having previously served as a reporter and editor with the company. He is a media adviser to the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy and the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, founded by his greataunt, Solanco-born Edna Schreiber. He is a member of the Lancaster Meeting, Religious Society of Friends.
Ernie’s Schreiber family roots began in the Buck, where his great-grandparents, Richard and Anna Hack Schreiber, settled after immigrating from Germany in the 1870s.

“We like to choose a theme that incorporates a broad subject matter to allow a wide range of interpretations by artists,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, a member of LCAA

Although LCAA is based in Strasburg, its members hail from communities across Lancaster County.
“The Four Seasons” exhibit doubles as a fundraiser for LCAA. Each highlighted artist donated his or her work to be featured in the show, and the proceeds of art sales will support LCAA’s many programs and community art events.
For the second year, LCAA will hold the Summer Sketchbook Challenge, which is open to both members and

Native plant kit sale posted
To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer the Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kit Sale through Tuesday, June 18.
The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations include sites in Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, and York counties.
The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peatfree growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.
The kit options are the Sunny Soggy Bottoms Kit and Shady Soggy Bottoms Kit for wetter-soil areas as
well as the Wildlife Magnet Kit, which contains generalist plants that provide food and habitats for numerous pollinators and wildlife. All three kit options are available in two sizes. Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25 plants. Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.
Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the customer’s region.
More information about the plant kit sale is available at https://extension.psu.edu/ mws-native-plant-kit-sale.
Penn State Extension also offers the opportunity to earn the Master Watershed Steward watershed-friendly certification in collaboration with Nurture Nature Center. Native plants are woven throughout the certification criteria.
