Riding to remember
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDInJanuary 2021, Bill and Julia Trout of Willow Street lost their son Daulton to suicide. Like the rest of his family, Daulton was an avid motorcycle rider, so Bill and Julia decided to begin a tradition that would both honor his memory and spread a message of hope to those who struggle with mental health issues. In June 2021, on the weekend of what would have been Daulton’s 23rd birthday, the first Daulton Trout Memorial Motorcycle Ride was held.
This year, the third annual memorial ride will begin on Saturday, June 17, at the Hoffman Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds on South Lime Street, Quarryville. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by a safety meeting at 10:15 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. There will be a set cost per bike which will include a passenger, and
Concert series will return to Huffnagle Park
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe summer concert series will return with its first show at Huffnagle Park, located on Oak Street and Summit Drive in Quarryville, on Saturday, June 17, at 7 p.m. A rain location for the concerts has been set as Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville.
The series will include additional
shows that will be held at 7 p.m. on select Saturdays at the park throughout the summer.
The first show will feature a performance from Ian Carroll and the Patrick Players, a local group that performs folk music with a Celtic influence. Carroll, the front man and fiddler player of the outfit, has partnered in the past with the event coordinator of the concert series, Monica Wagner.

a waiver must be signed during registration to participate in the ride.
Those who do not wish to participate in the ride are invited to join the motorcyclists for lunch and a silent auction at the Hoffman Building when they return. Pulled pork sandwiches, chips, cookies, iced tea and lemonade will be available to be purchased.
In the previous two years, the group of riders rode on Route 272 from the Buck to Willow Street before driving back to the Solanco Fairgrounds on back roads. This year, the route has been changed to include multiple towns in the Southern End, such as Quarryville, New Providence, Willow Street, Lampeter Strasburg and Georgetown. “We realized that no one sees the message when we’re on back roads,” Bill said. “Our point is to get the message out about suicide prevention.”
Every year, the Trout family partners with nonprofit organizations
like the DES Foundation and Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. The DES Foundation provides counseling and covers burial expenses for families affected by suicide. Since the first ride in 2021, Bill and Julia have raised over $29,000 for both organizations. “Our goal is to raise enough awareness and enough money to save someone else from going through what we did,” Julia said. “If we can help one family not have to deal with this, it’s all worth it.”
Previously, Bill and Julia used part of the proceeds of the ride to fund the Daulton Trout Scholarship at Solanco High School, where Daulton graduated from. Since the scholarship is now well-funded, they have chosen to support the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga. Building Bridges provides equine therapy services for veterans experiencing PTSD and their families.
Camp Acorn Acres
will return for second year
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDCamp Acorn Acres will return to Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville, on Saturdays, June 17, July 15, Aug. 5 and Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. The series will include a variety of educational activities and snacks for kids age 4 and older, and it will incorporate lessons from elementary educators Annie Weaver from Octorara Area School District and Hillary Buckwalter from Hempfield School District.
Each day in the program will focus
on a different topic. On June 17, participants will learn about owl pellets and why they’re necessary for some birds to make. Students will have an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet to discern what its owner might have eaten.
On July 15, Weaver and Buckwalter will discuss trees and forests, including the creatures that call them home. “There’s a whole lot going on up there,” said Betsy Shank, founder of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and creator of the program. “Everyone just thinks about squirrels and birds,

Solanco softball ends season with 22-5 record
BY MONA STEINHAUERSolanco’s softball team can certainly attest to the saying that all good things must come to an end. They should appreciate the fact that they finished the season with a 22-5 mark that included the Section Two crown. “And they should not let the last three games tarnish the rest of the season,” said head coach Brett Miller. “If you would have asked me at the start of the season if I would have taken a 22-5 record, I would have said heck yeah. This was one of the better records in my career and we did it with one starting senior.”
After pretty much cruising through the regular season with a 22-2 record, Solanco won the Section Two title (14-1) and carried a 14-game winning streak
into the post-season. They opened the L-L League playoffs with a 9-1 win over Manheim Central but suffered their second loss of the season, an 11-4 final against Warwick. They rebounded with a 12-1 thumping of Lower Dauphin and topped Ephrata 4-1 before losing their last three games of the season.
A 6-4 district consolation loss to Greencastle Antrim on Thursday, June 1, left Solanco as the fourth seed in District Three. The hosts looked to threaten early with Josie Janssen, who went 34, reaching on a one out base hit and Holly Grube working a walk. They were left stranded.
Greencastle broke through with one in the third and Solanco matched that effort when Janssen’s sharp single to right field skipped past the outfielder
allowing the junior to race home. The Blue Devils scored one more in the fourth and pushed two across in the fifth for a 4-1 advantage. Again, Solanco responded. Grube and Sara DeFrancesco smacked back-toback two out home runs to knot the score. But that was the end of their rally.
Two errors in the sixth, the second with two outs, contributed to Greencastle’s two-run sixth. That proved to be the difference. Solanco went three up, three down in their half of the inning and Janssen was left stranded in the seventh.
“We needed a few more key hits and a few less errors,” said Miller. “We certainly had opportunities. We needed to capitalize. At this point in the season, we cannot give extra at bats. Despite the loss, we were one of 16 teams moving on to the state playoffs.”
Anna Sexton gave up eight hits, struck out two and walked two. Ava Fedoruk finished with two hits.
Monday the girls made a 4.5hour drive to North Allegheny High School for their opening round of the PIAA 5A tournament where they faced WPIAL champs Trinity (20-2) who was making their first state playoff appearance since 2015. The hosts made the most of that opportunity, taking an early lead en route to an 8-3 victory.
“Holly rips a two out triple in the first inning and we left her stranded,” recalled Miller. “We needed to capitalize. We gave up too many two out hits or had a two-out error.”
Trinity came back with three in the bottom half, scoring two runs with two outs on three hits and one error, and Hanna Swhoski connected for a two-run homer in the second frame, quickly pushing the lead to 5-0.
Two more errors in the fourth inning led to Trinity extending their advantage to 6-0. Not going down without a fight, Solanco rallied in the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the lead in half. Kira
Roark and Holly Grube reached on back-to-back base hits and scored on DeFrancesco’s base hit.
Solanco finished with two hits in the sixth and went three up, three down in the seventh. In the meantime, Trinity scored two runs in the top of the sixth on back-to-back base hits and pulled out the victory.
Both teams finished with nine hits each, but Solanco committed four errors in the loss. Roark, Janssen and Grube each went 2-4.
“After that second inning, Anna came on,” said Miller. “She just needed more consistency behind her.
“These kinds of games, playoffs, need mature play. We have one senior starter. Now the rest of the team has gained this experience.
“Looking back, I didn’t think we’d win the section title by several games. I thought it might come down to the last one. And that week we played four games in five days and clinched with big wins (6-3 over L-S, 11-1 over
Etown, 10-0 over CV and 12-7 over Ephrata), that started this whole thing,” he added. “We played the top teams and different people were stepping up.”
This was the fourth time
Solanco was making an appearance in the PIAA tournament. Their last showing was in 2018 when they lost in the semifinals to Lampeter-Strasburg.
Program to cover day trip destinations
The Solanco Historical Society will present a program titled “Explore!” on Saturday, June 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The building is located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace. The program is free and open to the public.
Librarian and local history enthusiast Keith
Greenawalt will speak about regional museums and historic sites that could be day trip destinations for area residents. The sites include the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center, SS John W. Brown, National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum, Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum, Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, and Rolls-Royce Museum. All sites are
within approximately two hours of Lancaster.
Greenawalt is the director of the Dillsburg Area Public Library in York County and previously spent seven years working in libraries in his native Lancaster County. He holds degrees from Elizabethtown College and Clarion University. When not searching for the next museum to visit, he lives in Carlisle with his wife, Kami.

but what about bats and bugs?” The children will also learn about what kinds of products can be made from trees, such as paper and plastics. The crafts and activities will teach kids about how trees clean the air and will cover basic information and more specific trivia relating to forests.
On Aug. 5, students will learn about worms, and will discover the answer to a question that Shank has been wondering her whole life: Which end of a worm is the head? Weaver and Buckwalter will also discuss worms’ habitat, diet and other characteristics.
The title of the final day of the program is “Backbone Bonanza,” and activities will cover a plethora of information on vertebrates. While they look
at everything from squirrels to fish, participants will learn how to determine if an animal is a vertebrate.
Shank created Camp Acorn Acres last year after receiving multiple requests from the community to involve children at Acorn Acres. Although Shank can’t allow kids to volunteer at the rehab center for liability reasons, she wanted to create a camp specifically designed for kids. This way, youngsters could still learn about nature, investigate wildlife and foster an interest in the environment.
Shank decided that Weaver would be a perfect instructor for the camp, as she is not only an educator, but also an Envirothon coach. “Kids should understand these topics. This is about their future,” said Shank.

The memorial ride has received a wave of support in its first two years; over 100 motorcycle riders participated each year in 2021 and 2022. Last year, MHA of Lancaster County sent a letter to Bill and Julia stating that it was able to hire new staff for research thanks to family’s donations. “That meant the world to us. It gave us the drive we needed for the next year,” Bill said.
For every ride, the Trout family tows a trailer with Daulton’s motorcycle on it. The bike was an incomplete project of his, and Bill and his other son, Tyler, finished it with the help of Daulton’s friends. “This way, it’s like we’re riding with Daulton,” Julia said.

On July 1, southcentral Pennsylvania-based jazz quintet Temple Avenue will perform. Temple Avenue played in the Huffnagle Park concert series several years ago, and Wagner said she is excited to welcome the group back to Quarryville. Dewalds’ Funeral & Cremation Services will provide free refreshments for the second concert of the series.
The third show of the series will take place on July 29, and it will feature music from Max and Denise. The husband-and-wife duo will play a selection of covers of songs from multiple genres and time periods, including classic folk, ’50s pop songs, contemporary hits and rock ’n’ roll. Max and Denise have been performing for over 40 years, and they play alongside slide guitarist Mark Arnold and acoustic drummer Billy Graham. The Katie Hall Berkshire Hathaway Team will provide free refreshments for the concert on July 29.
The Huffnagle Park concert series will conclude on Aug. 26 with a performance from
Summit Hill Bluegrass, a group based in southeastern Pennsylvania that performs gospel and bluegrass music.
Summit Hill Bluegrass frequently performs in the Southern End and returns to Huffnagle Park every year to participate in the concert series.
The Quarryville Lions Club covers the expenses for the annual concert series. “People really love coming out to the concerts and being able to socialize with their neighbors,” Wagner said. “I personally enjoy the sense of community, but also just the small-town vibes.”
When looking for artists to highlight during the series, Wagner often seeks to include those from a range of genres, but who are still local. “I try to find different acts with different styles,” said Wagner. “I like to have a variety, and I’m always looking for artists.”
For more information, search for “Huffnagle Concert Series” on Facebook. Weather-related updates and venue information will be posted to the page.

Both Hands has announced a fundraiser to help offset the costs of an adoption while also aiding a local widow.
With assistance from Both Hands, Nadon and Christi Zook are coordinating a day of service at the home of Ms. Elizabeth of Strasburg. Ms. Elizabeth, 82, had hip surgery in October 2022 and currently needs assistance with home maintenance and improvements, including landscaping. The Zooks and a team of volunteers will work at her home on Saturday, June 17.
Just as participants in a fundraiser 5K race request donations in support of their event, the Zooks will seek sponsorships in advance of their day of service. The Zooks are pursuing domestic infant adoption and are working with multiple agencies across the United States.
To donate to the Zooks’ service project, contact Christi at 717-606-6952.
Both Hands’ mission is “to serve orphans, widows and adoptive families.” The organization’s name refers to the image of one hand for the widow and one hand for the orphan. Both Hands helps families fundraise for their adoptions by coordinating service projects benefiting widows; proceeds go toward the adoptions. Both Hands receives fundraising support for its operating expenses through private donors, so no funds raised by a family and its team of volunteers are deducted for Both Hands’ administrative costs.
Since 2008, Both Hands projects have raised over $16 million for adoptions and orphan care and have served more than 1,300 widows. For more details, visit www.BothHands.org.

Trail application available for Apple devices
The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has announced that the Susquehanna NHA app is now available on the App Store for IOS users. Created through a partnership with Franklin & Marshall College computer science course students in 2021, the app was first made available through Google Play under the name Susquehanna NHA Trails.
The app is part of SNHA’s ongoing mission to connect visitors to the outdoor recreation amenities along the Susquehanna River. In the app, trail access areas, parking information, restroom facilities, and heritage sites are listed individually for major regional trails and nature preserves. The app also allows Susquehanna NHA to send notifications about trail updates or construction. Users can also check to see if the James D. Warner Passageway under the Shock’s Mill Bridge on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is flooded. This waterfront passageway floods during spring freshets and on occasion in the summer. There is no available trail detour, so it is helpful for users to check before hitting the trail.
The application has event and contact information for Susquehanna NHA to better connect its community to riverfront initiatives. Another feature of the app allows users to submit trail maintenance requests. Trail users can submit the trail name, the mile marker, and a photo of the issue. This interactive component is designed to help trail managers keep local trails clear and accessible. For links directly to the apps on the App Store and Google Play, visit www.susqn ha.org and click Maps & Guides.
The SNHA connects the people and communities of Lancaster and York counties to one another and to the nation through stories about the area. The organization aims to welcome visitors, cultivate partnerships, and nurture a strong regional identity.
