Katey Ragsdale, manager of the Community Closet Thrift Store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, is excited to be open to the public again after having been closed since March. However, business is not quite as usual, and Ragsdale wants customers to be aware of changes at the store. “We value you and your safety and want you to know about our new safety procedures we put in place so that we can keep our community healthy,” Ragsdale said. The procedures were inspired by those used by local Mennonite Central Committee thrift stores, along with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other government entities. For the foreseeable future, the store will be open from Mondays through
your
Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an hour closed at noon for deep cleaning. Only 12 individuals will be allowed in the store at a time, and the door will be monitored. All visitors to the Community Closet must wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth at all times while they are inside the store. Individuals should also maintain a 6-foot social distance from others while in the store and in line for checkout. The fitting rooms are closed and not available for use; returns are not accepted. The restroom is closed as well and not available for guests to use. Volunteers are especially valued right now because many of the people who have the time to serve are vulnerable to the virus. Ragsdale invites anyone age 15 or older who is looking for an opportunity to learn how a small business is run - and to have some fun in the See Community Closet pg 7

Currently, vendors of fresh flowers, jewelry, vinyl decals, and crafts have reserved spaces at the first market. Friday, June 26, is the deadline to register for the July 18 market. “It would be nice to have more people participating to show their support for the senior center and the community around it,” Reeves remarked. Vendors must provide their own tables. Electricity will be available. There is a cost per space to participate in the farmers market. The proceeds will benefit the Next Gen Senior Center. “We run mainly on donations - a lot from seniors who give with their meals,” Reeves said. Typically, the center is open to individuals age 60 and older on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free transportation is provided to and from the center. Clients come from as far as Gap, White Horse, Strasburg, Willow Street, Holtwood, Pequea, and Martic. “We love to have people join,” Reeves commented. “The seniors that come here come to socialize and for entertainment. We keep them busy.” All of the activities at the center - including chair yoga, geri-fit exercises, games, performances, and daily hot meals are offered free of charge. Donation jars are located on
every table, however, so that individuals who are able to contribute may do so anonymously. “Each meal costs $5.12, but we cannot charge them,” Reeves said. “We don’t ask them for anything, just their attendance.” The senior center has been closed since the middle of March, but it has not been inactive. In February, the center partnered with Giant at the Buck to open a food pantry for its clients as part of a Central Pennsylvania Food Bank initiative. When clients return to the center, the pantry will be available anytime the center is open. In the meantime, the pantry is open to anyone who needs food, without age or income requirements, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Giant provides the majority of the food, which Reeves’ husband, Steve, picks up on those mornings. Between 16 and 30 people have visited the food pantry every day it has been open, Reeves reported. For more information about the senior center and its food pantry or to reserve a space for the farmers market, readers may email Reeves at NextGen SeniorsCenter@gmail.com or call the center at 717-786-4770 on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

awards were sponsored by Occupational Advisory Board members Robert Herr and Don Ranck. The DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award was given to Aubrielle Patton, Garden Spot, for her leadership as president of the LCCTC FFA. In addition to her classroom leadership, Aubrielle also took part in every FFA activity the chapter offered outside of school time. These events included an information booth for Lancaster County Ag Week, horse rides for Barktoberfest, volunteer work with the Lancaster City Police Mounted Unit at the Horse World Expo, and attendance at FFA events such as Meet Your State Officer Night, LanCo LEADS Conference, and the Agricultural Cooperation Establishes Success (ACES) Conference. Aubrielle’s award was supplemented with a monetary donation by LCCTC FFA supporters Steve and Deb Berkoski. The LCCTC FFA officers each received a plaque for their year of service. In addition to Aubrielle and Katie, the officer team included secretary Morgan Turner, Penn Manor; treasurer Rosimar Quinones, School District of Lancaster; and reporter Jazmine Kelsey, Manheim Central. Jazmine and Morgan earned their Greenhand Degree after demonstrating an ability to explain various aspects of FFA and memorizing the FFA Creed. The Animal Production Science & Technology Program is a full-day program at the LCCTC Willow Street Campus. For more information about the program, readers may contact adviser Lori Hess at lhess@lancasterctc.edu or 717-464-7050, ext. 7067.

The U.S. Chamber has unveiled its Reopening Business Digital Resources Center to equip America’s business community with the latest state guidelines, sector-specific guidance, small business advice, and other tools and resources as businesses look to reopen safely and keep employees and customers healthy and informed. The resources center also includes a customizable workplace flyer to help businesses communicate the steps they are taking to keep people safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to employees and customers. To learn more, readers may visit www.uschamber.com/reopening -business. Locally, the Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County collaborated to create a $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Southern End Community Association (SECA), 299 Park Ave., Quarryville, recently held a plant sale. Individuals from the community volunteered their time to help with the tasks that needed to be done prior to and following the event. Community members not only purchased plants but also gave extra donations to help support SECA. Organizers faced several challenges for the outdoor event, including the cold weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. SECA’s last plant sale took place in 2012. Making the event happen required much help from the board of directors and the community. Carol Gibson also played a significant part in planning and organizing the event. SECA director Rick Kerns, who has been in his position for little more than a year, said he appreciates the support of everyone who attended the event.

Grants will not be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis; individuals have through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster Countybased businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

process - to contact her by calling 717-786-2034 or emailing communitycloset@frontier.com. “I started as a volunteer here when I was in middle school, and now I am the manager here,” Ragsdale related. “It is the perfect fit for me, but I never would have expected that when I was a middle school girl hanging out with a friend working in a thrift store. The small opportunities we initiate can lead to bigger ones we never would’ve expected.” The Community Closet supports New Hope Community Life Ministry, which offers professional counseling for a variety of life’s challenges. The thrift store’s shutdown did impact the ministry’s finances, but Ragsdale said she is grateful for the blessings the store has received. In the four months leading up to the shutdown, the Community Closet had gained popularity, putting it in a better position than it was a year prior. Additionally, the store’s landlords were gracious and understanding, and local organizations donated needed resources, Ragsdale said. “We are so happy to be able to open our doors again, for the benefit of our store, yes, but especially for the people in our community,” Ragsdale commented. “We will certainly be relying on the kindness and generosity of our community and guests for the rest of the year so that we can fully catch up.” Special offers have resumed with the thrift store’s reopening. Young at Heart sales take place every Wednesday, when anyone age 50 or older pays half price on color-tagged items. The First Friday sales will resume on Friday, July 3, and continue on every first Friday after that. Additionally, since the closure took place before the winter clothing inventory was liquidated, the recently curated collection has been marked down significantly. They will be on sale through June. “It’s a great deal if you can picture being cold again,” Ragsdale suggested. The Community Closet has also resumed accepting donations. Items may be dropped off from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Items must be clean, not broken, and packed well. Donations will be placed directly into the white shed behind the store and held there overnight before they are taken into the store. Ragsdale recommended that people leave their donations in their vehicles overnight before bringing them to the Community Closet. For more information about the Community Closet, readers may find the organization on Facebook, visit www.newhope ministry.info/community-closet, or use the aforementioned contact methods.

That means that the most outstanding quality of a Christian man should be his love. In 2016, House of His Creation (HOHC) became Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM). Shortly thereafter, the ministry moved from its location on Lititz Pike to 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. At the time, House of His Creation still existed as a maternity home on the new property, serving women age 18 and older. Loving and Caring Resources, which also came under the FORM umbrella, held onsite classes including The Parenting Journey and the Beautiful You events. In December 2019, the ministry decided to make another change. “We will be back to solely operating as HOHC, read a letter from Matthew Neff, executive director. Loving and Caring Resources services will continue to be present and active at the site. Callie Neff, housing support specialist with HOHC, explained the transition. “We had become more of a teaching, training, and equipping kind of ministry (as FORM), she noted. “We wanted to focus back on our primary mission, which is housing. Over the nearly 50 years since HOHC was founded, the ministry mainly offered maternity housing with a mother and child component. The Neffs served at the house on Lititz Pike in that capacity. “We were living with young teen moms, recalled Callie, “(but) who was calling (for help) changed. Women who are in need of help now are usually between the ages of 18 to 24 and come from a variety of backgrounds, but they have a common need - a short-term safe place to regroup. While there are an abundance of services in the Lancaster area, there is also great need. “For a woman to be told we should have an opening in two weeks - that’s too long, said Matthew.

that can fill the gap for women who need a safe place to stay for a few weeks. “The apartments are being shifted so that some of the rooms are designated for ministry purposes for women escaping (exploitation, human trafficking, or abuse), said Callie. “They need that first stop to work through the crisis and figure out what’s next. Matthew noted that as apartments become available, more will be open to the increased need for women in the Manheim, Ephrata,

“We can fill in those two weeks, added Callie, who noted that HOHC will function with two different on-site models. First, the stone house will remain available for pregnant women. Bedrooms are available in the house where women can be served in a family model. “They live with our family and we offer case management, transportation, and the whole gamut of social services and support, said Callie. The second model will be apartments located on the property

Matthew Neff (left), executive director of House of His Creation (HOHC), and Callie Neff, housing support specialist, stand beside the sign at the ministry’s location in northern Lititz. After using the name Family of Restoration Ministries for several years, HOHC is returning to its roots by providing housing for women in certain circumstances.
Warwick, and Manheim Township areas who have been seeking help in the last year. Once the crisis has passed, the ministry can help a woman begin to work toward goals. “It may be finding a program or housing, said Callie. Matthew added that a woman need not have children to turn to the ministry for help, but he noted that children are often a motivating factor in leaving an unsafe situation. “(We can offer a place) for her and the children to sleep safely, and they have the chance to plan the future while being out of the (unsafe) circumstances, Matthew said. Callie summed up the changes in the ministry, saying, “It has expanded beyond the limitation of calling just because of a pregnancy. A lot of the same factors are at work in the lives of these women, and the path to finding a way out is generally the same. She added that a safe place and healthy supports are available to clients of HOHC. “We have the added bonus of the years of experience walking through pregnancies. That’s been our foundation, she said. Current needs of the ministry include new doors for the apartments. “I would love to have a new door campaign, said Matthew. “Doors cost up to $300 each, and we need 14 for six apartment units. He noted that individuals could sponsor a single door or builders could donate excess inventory.
