Encounter Church Plans Biker Saturday By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, has regularly hosted an annual motorcycle ride and picnic. Typically, that event has happened on a Sunday, when folks are encouraged to ride their motorcycles to church, then go on a ride and enjoy a picnic following the service. Thanks to the church now holding services on Sundays at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., the motorcycle event has been moved up a day. Biker Saturday will take place on June 29. A bike show will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. A ride will start at the church at 3:30 p.m. and return by 5 p.m., at which time there will be a cookout dinner. Everyone is invited to stay for Encounter Night, a worship event, at 6:30 p.m. “(Having) two services has changed

the landscape for this,” said senior pastor Stuart Osborne. “But we have had the car show on Saturdays for five years, (so it is not unprecedented).” Church member and motorcycle enthusiast Tom Steinhauer has designed the route for the ride. “We’re going to take all sorts of back roads to Susquehannock State Park and across the river,” he said, noting that the turnaround will be the Urey Overlook at Otter Creek in York Furnace. The cookout will feature burgers, hot dogs, baked goods, and snacks. All the food will be provided by the church at no cost to guests. Motorcycles with two and three wheels will be welcome at the show. Door prizes, most of which are related to motorcycle care, will be awarded during the show. A few will also be distributed during Encounter Night. See Biker Saturday pg 9

Encounter Church members (from left) Tom Steinhauer, senior pastor Stuart Osborne, and Matt and Lori Morrow invite the community to participate in Biker Saturday on June 29.

Exhibition To Feature Students’ Artwork Re-Enacting Civil War History The 2019 Solanco District Art Exhibition in the C.X. Carlson Room at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will feature works in diverse two-dimensional and threedimensional media produced by students from Bart-Colerain, Clermont, Providence, and Quarryville elementary schools; George A. Smith and Swift middle schools; and Solanco High School. The artwork may be viewed from Saturday, June 29, to Saturday, July 27. The public is invited to meet the artists during a reception on June 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. “The exhibition celebrates the creativity and critical thinking of students as they envision, explore, engage, persist, and reflect upon their ideas as they represent and interact with the world around them,” said Candace Rakers, chair of the district’s visual arts department. “The exhibition also honors the dedication and expertise of educators See Student Exhibition pg 7

The Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, has expanded once again. Last year, nearly 1,000 visitors each day viewed the addition of Gen. Longstreet’s headquarters camp, the signal corps, additional Federal generals, troops from the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves Company D, and skirmish battle re-enactments. This year, the event will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 28, 29, and 30, and will bring an additional See Living History Event pg 8

“Endure” by Olivia Stoltzfus will be one of the many pieces of artwork created by Solanco students that will be displayed at the Quarryville Library from June 29 to July 27. An artists’ reception will be held on June 29.

Wheat’s Tigers and the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster will be two of the many groups that will participate in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace in Quarryville on June 28 to 30.

Middle school students at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) recently donated handmade blankets to Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. The students worked on the blankets for about 45 minutes each week during their clubs. The middle school at WFCS has new clubs every quarter. Students are encouraged to pick a club to participate in and learn something new. The idea of making something to give back to the community began two years ago with middle school teacher Kimberly Smith. In the past, the club has donated to Nemours A.I. duPont Hospital for Children. WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield

Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.wfcs.org, search for “West Fallowfield Christian School” on Facebook or call 610-593-5011. Pictured on front:

The lower lawn will house the military camps, which will include signal corps, infantry, dismounted cavalry, artillery, Gen. Longstreet’s command headquarters, and rifle and artillery demonstrations, alternating every half hour. A battle re-enactment will be held each afternoon on the battlefield. The sutlers’ camp will be situated at one end of the military camp. Civil Warera reproduction clothing and materials, including camp tables, boxes, and chairs, may be purchased by visitors as well as participants. The Christian Commission will also be camped at that end, and chaplains Alan and Faith Farley will conduct Sunday services there. Sheep and wool educators may be found at the lower end of the field, alongside the Black Confederates. Atomic Hogs BBQ will be located between the parking field and the living history camps, just off from the barn. Inside the end room of the barn will be Frank Vattelana Jr. with his collection of memorabilia, including photographs, from the war. Printed schedules will be available from several locations within each camp as well as from the food vendor. Visitors may also make donations to support the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society’s mission to continue to preserve the birthplace and to cover costs related to the hosting of the event. Books by J. Arthur Moore will be sold at the tent where 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem and a cadet will tell of the boys of the war, and proceeds will also help to offset the cost of the event. For more information about the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event, readers may contact coordinator Joel Moore at joemoore3@comcast .net or 717-351-5450. Callers should leave a message with call-back information. Moore strives to check messages daily and return calls within a day.

camp area featuring sutlers, the Christian Commission, Wheat’s Tigers Zouave unit CSA, U.S. Colored Troops, additional Federal generals, Confederate generals from Lee’s Lieutenants, and more to be confirmed. Setup for the encampment will begin on Thursday, June 27, with the arrival of the sutlers, the establishment of the military command headquarters and artillery in the military camp, and the placement of canvas for the living history, sutlers camp coordination, and the history of the boys of the Civil War. Food service this year will be provided by Atomic Hogs BBQ, which will set up and start the cooking process on June 27. The barbecue caterer will be ready to serve visitors when the event is open to the public. Visitors are welcome between 2 and 4 p.m. on June 28 and may watch the camps come together, ask questions, and visit with participants as long as they do not interfere with setup. Sutlers will be open for business, and the food service will be in full operation during that time. The main event will be held on the weekend, with the encampment open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 30. Parking and admission will be free of charge, but a nominal fee will be charged for tours of the historic birthplace. The encampment will be divided into three fields: close to the birthplace, the lower lawn, and an adjacent battlefield. The living history area of the camp will be located closest to the birthplace, with authors, a blacksmith, a surgeon, Federal and Confederate generals, President Abraham Lincoln, and other dignitaries housed there. Guests may visit with Lincoln and the generals twice each day. Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee will receive callers on June 29. Lincoln’s private secretary, John Nicolay, will join the president on June 30.

Contemporary worship music is led by a band, and there is typically a short message. Even if folks are unable to stay for Encounter Night, the organizers of Biker Saturday hope that motorcycle enthusiasts will come out for the other parts of the event. “We’ll gather and hang out, talking bikes and talking life, Steinhauer said. “It’s a fun way to connect the church and the community. It’s a fairly casual event. Church member Matt Morrow said he views the event as a way to break the ice with folks who do not attend Encounter Church. “We like to show that you can still have fun and be a Christian, he commented. Morrow noted that a previous motorcycle event introduced him and his family to the church. “It had a really welcoming feeling, and we could really feel the Holy Spirit moving, Morrow recalled. Biker Saturday from pg 1 No rain date has been set. If the show, ride, and cookout are canceled, announcements will be posted at www.encounterchurch pa.org and www.facebook.com/ encounterchurchpa. Encounter Night will be held regardless of the weather. “We considered having it outdoors, but we thought that logistically, this being our first Biker Saturday, we’d keep it simple, Osborne explained. Encounter Night returned in January after a hiatus of several years. It had originally been run by young adults, but as the organizers grew up, got married, and started families, the monthly worship event had been discontinued. The congregation missed it, however, and new leadership was found. Encounter Night is now held at 6:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month.

Scout Leaders Receive Awards The Conestoga River District recently presented the District Award of Merit to Dwayne R. Leonard and Christopher M. Gibson. Leonard has been an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 172 in Terre Hill for more than 20 years. He has earned the Arrow of Light and is an Eagle Scout. As a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), he sealed his Brotherhood and is a Vigil Honor member. His service includes many years helping staff with Klondike, Fall Camporee, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training. Additionally, he has served the OA on kitchen staff for

several ordeals and two Conclaves. He has served at the Council level on Camporee staff, at a merit badge station, as security for the STEM event, and as part of the kitchen staff for three Camporees. The community has also benefited from his service, as he has been part of the Memorial Day events and parade in Terre Hill, participated in Wreaths Across America, and helped with cleanup at his local community park and the Welsh Mountain Park. He assisted with annual tree planting for the Chester County Solid Waste Authority. He has helped stock a pond for a local Lions and

Sportsman’s Club for the annual fishing rodeo for the handicapped and on Fishing Day has helped persons with handicaps to fish. Leonard is the son of Jim and Peggy Leonard of New Holland. Along with his family, he attends St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland. There, he has been on kitchen staff for the Thanksgiving dinner for many years and assists with the annual Christmas breakfast for children. He has also made and distributed valentines for veterans. He continues to assist with a water station for Garden Spot Village’s annual distance races. He has also

volunteered for several years to help with its annual fundraising auction. Gibson’s Scouting record dates back to 1999. His adult service began as a Tiger adult, followed by Cubmaster of Pack 91, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 91, and unit commissioner, the latter two since 2005. At the district level, he has served as district member at large for 15 years, including two years as district chair. He has earned the Den Leader’s Training Award, the Cubmaster Award, and the Scouter’s Training Award. He attended National Camping School in 2016 and Philmont See Scouts pg 15
