ONew Hope Counseling Center launches expansion campaign
n May 20, community leaders and local clergy convened at New Hope Counseling Center in Quarryville for an event to celebrate New Hope’s new initiative to purchase and renovate a facility located at 248 Maple Ave. The kick off event officially launched New Hope’s campaign to raise the funds needed to complete the project, which will allow the organization to significantly expand its counseling services and to better meet the Southern End’s mental health needs.
The event included an opening ceremony and addresses from several members of New Hope’s leadership, including board chair Chris Rachor, board member and local pastor Jeremy Peterson and the counseling center’s first executive director, Ken Zieber.
The speakers recalled New Hope’s history of advocating for mental health in the community and its collaborations with local churches, and many board members highlighted a growing demand for mental health services in the modern world.
During the opening ceremony, one of New Hope’s former clients underlined the counseling facility’s longstanding commitment to offering financial aid to individuals seeking treatment via the Hope Chest Fund, which empowered him to receive the care he required without leaving a burdensome debt and weighty fees.
Last year, New Hope was offered a chance to acquire ownership of the building that has housed its offices for the past two decades. After careful deliberation and prayer, the board decided to proceed with a plan

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful
of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions.
In recent weeks, various social
Lancaster County Cruisers to host annual show
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDLancaster County Cruisers (LCC) will hold the group’s 24th annual car show at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, on Saturday, July 6. The rain-or-shine event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will double as a celebration of
Car show from
any make, model and year. LCC members and motorheads from all parts of Lancaster County are invited to participate in the event after making a suggested donation, and no preregistration will be required. Dash plaques will be offered to the first 200 attendees to
Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food trucks, and live music will be provided by DJ Jeff Primaldi. The car show will also feature various door prizes that will include items donated by local businesses. Members of the Willow Street Fire Company will hold additional prize drawings throughout the day.
Guests are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to the event to benefit Willow Street Church’s food pantry. Every year, LCC donates a portion of funds raised by the car show to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville to help sustain its many community services programs and food bank.
The 2024 LCC car show will feature a special appear-
ance from a famous (and furry) fire safety advocate. Members of LCC will operate a booth to offer information on the club, which is open to members of the public who are interested in joining, whether they own a vehicle or not. The club will offer interested attendees more information on its regular meeting times and location.
“We like to look at cars people have fixed up and are proud of,” said LCC president Don Teeter. “We’re not into taking points away if there’s a speck of mud on the rim or a tire that doesn’t match; it gives the little guy a chance.”
This year, the car show will be held in memory of former LCC vice president and event organizer Jack Parke, who died in March 2024. In addition to the traditional trophies given to vehicle owners every year, Parke’s partner, Carol Farmer, will select the recipient of the first Jack Parke Memorial Trophy.

Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens new homes for in-person and virtual tours. This year’s parade features 22 single-family homes,
duplexes and remodeling projects from 13 different builders, ranging in price from $499,999 to over $1 million. Participants may visit 19 of the 22 homes in person and/or all the homes virtually utilizing 3D technology, providing a room-by-room view of each home’s innovative designs and details.
Detailed information on all of the home entries is available at www.lancaster paradeofhomes.com.
The ParadeSmart app is an additional feature that provides home details, directions and customizable routes. After downloading the app from their app store, users should select
the BIA Parade of Homes.
The Parade of Homes Guidebooks with the same information is available at the BIA office, 204 Butler Ave., Lancaster, and copies of the book were mailed to more than 100,000 Lancaster and Lebanon County households.

This year’s featured trends include a first-floor owner’s suite, flexible living space,
neighborhood amenities, smart features and a 55 and up community. to purchase and renovate the building. New Hope purchased the building in January 2024, and the New Hope for a Healthier Community Capital Campaign is being utilized for various renovations made possible by more than 50 donors. As of May 2024, the campaign has raised approximately half its minimum fundraising goal of $900,000.
“We realized we could expand our space not only to improve the flow of our programs but also to increase what we offer,” said Deb Riddell, executive director of New Hope Counseling Center. “All offices will be larger, so our staff will have opportunities to see larger groups for marriage and family counseling if that’s what clients want.” The expansion will also introduce an art and play therapy room to provide a more comfortable setting for clients by allowing children to use toys and enabling adults to paint during sessions.
The Clark Associates
The expansion will add an art and play room to make clients feel more comfortable during counseling sessions.
Charitable Foundation has pledged to donate $100,000 if the campaign reaches $800,000 before the end of 2024. New Hope will begin demolition and deconstruction of the facility in September, which will rely on continued donations from the community. To make a donation or learn more about the project, visit www.newhope ministry.info or contact Riddell at 717-786-2802, ext. 101.
SNAP announces new license plate
Spay Neuter Assistance Program Inc. (SNAP) invites members of the public to purchase a new official Pennsylvania license plate to raise awareness and funds for the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. The plate was recently approved by the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation (PennDOT), and registration fees will be used solely to finance spay/ neuter surgeries. The plate features a drawing of a dog and a cat along with the text “spay/neuter saves lives.” SNAP is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Pennsylvania that helps people access reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats. SNAP notes that spaying and neutering these animals may help to reduce the number of dogs and cats that need homes and thereby reduce the number euthanized. The new license plate is available through the Special PennDOT License Plate Form, available at http:// SNAPofPA.org. The submission procedure is detailed on the aforementioned website. SNAP will forward the forms to PennDOT, which will process the requests and send customers their plates.
Cliff

media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and other bodies of water.
The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and Columbia, local medical professionals have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area.
Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface. Additionally, many people believe jumping into water is entirely safe because of the cushion the water provides. According

to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured. During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first. While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscapeno matter how exciting the activity may seem online.

Holocaust survivor to speak
The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.
The speaker will be Sami Steigmann, who is a Holocaust survivor, an educator, and a motivational speaker. When he was a toddler, he was subjected to Nazi medical experimentation in a Ukrainian labor camp while his parents were put to work, and Steigmann would not have survived if it were not for a German woman. Steigmann seeks to tell his story to as many people as possible.
The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-319-3430.
Grave Concern sets meeting

Landis will discuss the cemeteries of Marietta and western Lancaster County in a presentation titled “Marietta RIP - Resting in Pieces.” The meeting is free and open to the public.
