Golf outing will benefit student scholarships
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDEvery year, the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF) awards multiple scholarships to students throughout Solanco School District who are preparing to embark on the next chapter of their academic careers. The scholarships aim to provide an opportunity for students to continue to excel after graduation, as well as supporting high-schoolers who may not be able to attend college otherwise. This year, SEF gave out more than $32,000 to 16 students, which is the largest amount of scholarship funds awarded since before the coronavirus pandemic.
SEF’s scholarships are primarily funded through its annual Tee It Up for Education golf fundraiser. This year, the event will take place on Friday, Aug. 16, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Registration will begin at noon, followed by
a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Golfers will have an opportunity to earn prizes as a team during the event as they raise money to support students in the school district.
“It’s a jolly good time,” said Solanco School District staff member Becky Guhl. “We have amazing sponsors who have continued to support the golf outing year after year, and we’re so appreciative. It makes a huge difference, which is evident this year.”
SEF gives out three different scholarships at the end of each school year: the SEF Scholarship, the Futures Scholarship and the Opportunity Scholarship.
The Academic Scholarship is awarded to students who achieved high grade point averages and completed various advanced courses during their high school careers. The Futures Scholarship is given to students who are the first members of their family to attend college, and the Opportunity Scholarship is given to students
The
Foundation awarded scholarships to 16 students this year for a
who are hard workers and good candidates for college, even if their high school grades don’t
qualify them for typical scholarships. This year, Gavin Cox, Cody Rose and Bradley Weder won the
Opportunity Scholarship, and Kristen Eckman, Holly Grube and Aidan Todd received the Futures
BY JEFF FALKExercise is good for the body. Play is good for the soul.
On the surface, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for adults with disabilities is all about physical activity. But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun.
“Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these
young people don’t get out as much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.”
Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. The program consists of a 10-game schedule and games are played
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn 1947, the Quarryville Legion post erected pillars at the entrance of Memorial Park in Quarryville to honor veterans of both World Wars. After many decades, the pillars began to deteriorate. In 2013, community members and Quarryville Lions Club president Joanne Black, who was serving her first term at the time, noticed the pillars’ need for restoration, and Black approached the borough and other members of the club’s leadership to devise a plan.
After contacting Quarryville Borough and Lions Club leaders, Black spearheaded a project to repair the memorial pillars. The project entailed the restoration of the cement between the pillars’ stones that had eroded. Unforeseen complications such as extensive water damage drastically increased the project’s initial cost, but it was finally completed in time to be rededicated on Memorial Day in 2013. Several local organizations and businesses also donated benches for the renovation, and Quarryville Borough completed

“Colleges are really expensive. If you come out carrying a huge debt, it means

that it will take graduates that much longer before they can truly start living their lives,” said SEF board member Fan Bender, who also serves as a member of the organization’s scholarship committee.

Memorial Church sets community dinner
Memorial Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, will host a community dinner on Saturday, June 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The meal is free, and donations will be accepted. The church holds a community dinner on the last Saturday of every month.
Boehm’s Chapel Society posts Heritage Sunday
“Crows and Methodist Preachers: A Look at Early Circuit Riders” will be the subject of the Boehm’s Chapel Society’s annual Heritage Sunday service. The event will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, in the chapel at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street.
The Rev. Joe DiPaolo, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, will be the speaker. The event will include a worship service, which will be followed by a hayride to the original farmstead of Martin and Eva Boehm, weather permitting.
The Methodist circuit rider is a figure from early America who had a significant role in the growth of Christianity in the nation. Passionate about their message of salvation, these preachers often followed the wagon tracks to new settlements on the frontier. They established churches in villages and hamlets across the land and helped shape the culture of the country. DiPaolo’s slideshow presentation will include images and stories about local personalities.
DiPaolo, a member of the Boehm’s Chapel board, was president of the United
Methodist Church - Eastern Pennsylvania Conference’s historical society for 20 years. He has published several books and articles on local and national Methodist history.
The chapel board will also hold a business meeting at 3 p.m. in the chapel.
The public is invited to both the Heritage Sunday service and the business meeting.
The chapel was built in 1791 and is named for the Boehm family. It was restored and rededicated in 1991.

Veterans memorial
extensive landscaping to transform the memorial into a larger area for local veterans.
In 2022, Black became chairman of the Veterans Memorial Project at Memorial Park. Community members began to contact her once more to suggest a new project to expand the memorial to include veterans of the wars that occurred after World War II. The area was rededicated a second time to honor those who fought in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
As Black concludes her third term as president of the Quarryville Lions Club this summer, the organization is in the process of another renovation at Memorial Park. This time, the project will involve the installation of six flag poles around the existing American flag; each pole will have a flag to commemorate the individual branches of the United States’ military. The Quarryville Lions Club is currently raising funds to support the addition.
“We’re getting a lot of help from people in the community, as well as local businesses and organizations,” Black said. “The Southern End is very supportive of veterans, and we’re thankful for their support.” Black added that the Quarryville Lions Club hopes to complete the project by Memorial Day 2025.
For more information on how to support the project, contact Black at 717-786-4133 or jojo black@epix.net.

“It’s like sandlot football,” said Samuels. “We show up and play. We make sure everyone scores and everyone kicks off. There’s no tackling, no pushing, no shoving. We don’t keep score. We make sure everyone has fun.”
“It’s hard to describe;
you’ve got to see it,” Samuels continued. “It’s two hours of action-packed football. There’s a lot of trash talking. These young people can give it good, but it’s all in good fun.”
Last year, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League consisted of two teams, 20 players and eight cheerleaders, affectionately referred to as “The Lancaster Sweethearts.” This year the program is hoping to grow the league to 40 players, enough for four teams.
“A lot of these young people want to play football,” said Samuels. “They can’t play football, so this is our way to get them to play.”

During the winter months, Aaron’s Acres, which is headquartered at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, offers sports programs for adults with disabilities in floor hockey, kickball and soccer.
“When kids with disabilities hit age 21, there’s not a whole lot out there for them to do,” said Samuels. “We know there are young people out there who want to play football. Come join us. We want them to come out. We want to expand. We love what we do.”
The league is named for Chuckie Magee, a former Aaron’s Acres camper from Lititz who passed away in 2015. The program was started in his honor but only over the last three years has it become associated with Aaron’s Acres.
“We talked to a couple of different organizations, and someone brought up Aaron’s Acres,” said Samuels. “We contacted Risa (Paskoff, executive director) and she loved it.”
Samuels’ 27-year-old son R.J. has Down syndrome.
“I worked with special needs kids a long time ago, but other than that I didn’t have much interaction until
my son was born,” said Samuels. “Honestly, if I didn’t have a son with Down syndrome, I wouldn’t be doing anything like this. It’s opened a whole new world for me.”
