Like nearly every other organization, Black Rock Retreat (BRR), 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has been impacted by the shutdown due to COVID-19. While the impact on the Christian camping ministry’s finances is notable, the organization’s leaders used it as impetus to create new programs to meet its own needs and those of the community. “We have been working with several local food banks and churches to store and help order food as well as make some meals that have been distributed to local families. So far, we have supplied meals for almost 2,000 people in the Lancaster area,” BRR outdoor education director Jon Hill said on June 18. “We are also partnering with two local ministries to help provide
temporary, transitional emergency housing for families who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.” BRR has also created Family Weekend Getaways, a program to give family members the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and connect with each other. Dates are available every weekend in July. Check-in will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and checkout will be 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lodging will primarily be available in cabins or the retreat center, with all options including private bathrooms. A limited number of tent campsites are available for those who want a more rustic experience. Additionally, meal packages will be offered to take the stress out of cooking. Hill noted that the menus will be planned by BRR’s chef and will include family-friendly options. See Black Rock Retreat pg 2

“We want this to be a relaxing weekend for families, and (we) have plenty of recreation areas available including basketball, volleyball, gaga court, (and) hiking trails, and the pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday,” Hill said. “Due to the current guidelines,

due to weather will be handled on a case-by-case basis. “Rainy days can be part of the fun of camping,” Hill remarked. Two other programs BRR has rolled out include a matching gift challenge and a nine-month Christian gap year program. The gap year will be run through a partnership with OneLife Institute. Beginning in August, recent high school graduates will live at BRR for nine months and receive discipleship training, serve in different areas of camp, and earn college credits through Cairn University. The matching gift challenge was created by a BRR supporter, who pledged to match donations up to $100,000. More than $80,000 in contributions has already been received, but more will be welcome. Supporting BRR now will enable the ministry to continue for years to come, Hill suggested. For more information about BRR and its new programs, readers may visit www.brr.org or call 800-858-9299.

Local businesses and individuals have sponsored the event in amounts ranging from $150 to $1,000. More sponsors are welcome. He always makes a point of playing a medley of the theme songs from each branch of the United States Armed Forces. “It is very appreciated by the veterans in our community who attend every year and are asked to stand and be recognized as the theme song from their branch of the military is played,” Greenleaf commented. Nearly 200 people typically attend each concert, so out of caution for the health and safety of potential attendees, this year’s patriotic concert will not be held in person. Instead, the music will be recorded and shared online so that listeners may enjoy the program at home. The recordings are slated to take place in the week before the holiday and are expected to be published at www.unionpres.com by Wednesday, July 1. Karen said. She noted that many of the young people who attend INCREASE events are not affiliated with a local church. The ministry endeavors to provide students with a safe place to be themselves, share their stories, and see Christian faith lived out in caring, compassionate ways. Obtaining a permanent facility is a priority, Karen related, as it would increase ministry opportunities. A capital campaign has not been created yet, and all donations currently go into the general fund. “We’re asking a lot, but the Lord’s been faithful,” she said. Karen invites readers to pray for the ministry, to register for the golf tournament, and to mark their calendars for the breakfast banquet, which has been set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at Willow Street Mennonite Church. “Whatever it might look like, we’re going to make something happen that morning,” she promised. tournament, originally set for May 8, was postponed to Friday, July 31. The tournament had been scheduled in May so it was not too close to the organization’s major fundraiser, a breakfast buffet and silent auction that regularly takes place in September, Karen said. The golf outing will be held at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. Registration will open at 7 a.m., and the shotgun start will take place at 8 a.m. Morning refreshments will be offered before the round, and lunch will be available afterward. Karen noted that the method of service will be determined by what is safe at that time. A cost has been set to participate in the tournament. Tee box sponsorships are also available. Both registrations and sponsorships may be submitted using the form at https://increaseyouth.com/golf/. Proceeds from the golf outing will help INCREASE Youth Ministry continue to serve local students. All of the activities are offered at no cost to participants. “We want them to hang out with us and hear about the hope of Christ at the same time,”

“Our heart really is to just be available to the kids in this community. We want to walk through life with them, and we want folks to partner with us,” said INCREASE Youth Ministry board secretary Karen Peters. INCREASE launched in 2011 as an offshoot of a church-affiliated youth center in Strasburg. Karen’s husband, Ron, has been the executive director since its beginning. Ron has an extensive background in youth ministry, and Karen is a kindergarten teacher. The couple is active at Threshold Church. Karen noted that while no particular church provides oversight to INCREASE, it has support and involvement from members of local congregations. The ministry is small, with about a dozen students in grades six to 12 from several school districts attending events. It lacks a physical location, so every Thursday evening, Ron and Karen, along with other volunteers, pick up attendees in Strasburg, head to a local restaurant for supper, and then spend a few hours at Camp Andrews in Holtwood playing and learning about God before returning students to their respective homes. “We like to get outside as much as we can,” Karen remarked. “Camp Andrews is very generous to let us use their space.” Once a month, the ministry hosts an outing neither on a Thursday nor at Camp Andrews. Past events have included bowling, roller skating, a ski trip, and music festivals. Consent forms signed by parents or guardians are required for every event. Although INCREASE primarily serves Lampeter-Strasburg students, young people from other districts are welcome to attend as well. “If there’s a parent willing to drive in and meet us halfway, we’re more than willing to work out a way to make that happen,” Karen said. During the shutdown, the Thursday evening activities and the monthly excursions were canceled. The second annual golf

The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual experience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Students who attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and live-streamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits containing printed materials and activities for the week will be mailed to each participant registering by Monday, July 6. To learn more about the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School, readers may visit http://lancasterconservation.org /education/youth-conservation -school/.

Vacation Bible school (VBS) is an important part of summer for Grace Church at Willow Valley, 300 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, so rather than cancel it entirely when COVID-19 prompted a shutdown, the children’s ministry team opted for a different look. This year, “drivethrough VBS” will be presented in the form of a take-home activity kit, which families may pick up at the church from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 18. “The drive-through idea came from an article I read on wearekidmin.com,” explained Bethany Hirschy, director of children’s ministries and communications. “A local church hosted a kids’ church drive-through where they handed out care packages containing snacks and a family game. We loved the idea, so we adapted it to fit VBS.” Every family will receive bags filled with activity pages, craft kits, snack recipes, and other items. Adult involvement with the activities will be encouraged but not required. “Our main goal in vacation Bible school is to reach kids and families who don’t know Jesus, so we wanted to create something that is simple and easy to use and does not necessarily require parents to become a ‘VBS leader’ at home,” Hirschy said. The title of this year’s VBS curriculum is “Incrediworld Amazement Park: A Thrill Ride Through God’s Creation.” It is produced by Answers in Genesis (AiG) and is an adaptation of AiG’s 2012 curriculum. A link to Grace Church’s YouTube channel will be included
HARDSCAPING & LANDSCAPING
with the activity bags so that VBS participants may view song playlists and other videos provided by AiG. “We have used Answers’ VBS over the past few years because we have been so impressed with their curriculum,” Hirschy said. “We know that we can trust that it will be biblically sound, gospel-centered, and created with excellence.” Hirschy noted that she has been told that this will be the first time in more than 30 years of VBS at Grace Church that children will not be in the building. “VBS has become a very special and exciting time in our church, so we are disappointed to not be able to have the typical programming, but we are so excited about this unique opportunity to be able to serve families in the community and spread the Gospel of Jesus,” she added. The shutdown has been challenging as the church had to move its services and programs online. The cessation of the human element provided by meeting together was the most difficult to endure, Hirschy said. However, she has seen some good come from this time. “ We tend to do the things we’ve always done, just because we have always done them that way, and although that isn’t necessarily bad, we have been forced to rethink nearly everything that we do, causing us to look at why we do it and to consider if there is a better and more God-honoring way to do it,” Hirschy commented. “For me, this time has rekindled my passion for ministry to children and families.” See VBS pg 9

LOHF Creates New Collaborative Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) announced the first eight organizations to join the new LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative (LCSC) in response to the need for more child/youth mental health care professionals in Lancaster County. The initiative is funded for three years, in part by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. The collaborative will equip mental health professionals to take on supervisory roles and will provide a post-master’s clinical fellowship program for license-eligible providers to receive supervision required for licensing. The LCSC is slated to begin in July with its inaugural participants: Community Services Group, TEAMcare Behavioral Health, Laurie Schein, Commonwealth Clinical Group, Thoughtful Wellness, Matters of the Heart Counseling, Diversity Works, and Focus Counseling Services. The LCSC believes that investing in the talent pipeline for behavioral health will result in stronger behavioral health organizations and competent supervisors who can mentor their staff. The LCSC adds that trained supervisors can effectively recruit and retain clinical staff, reducing patient caseloads, improving recruitment and retention, and lowering staff turnover rates. For more information on the LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative, readers may visit www.lohf.org/LCSC.

The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum recently announced that WellSpan Health has won a 2019 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award - one of the highest safety awards in health care - for its Sepsis Central Alert Team, an innovative program that works to quickly detect and treat sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency. WellSpan reported that it is the first Pennsylvania health system to achieve the honor in 15 years. The Joint Commission is known as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care, and the National Quality Forum sets national standards for health care performance measurement. The two organizations founded the Eisenberg Awards in 2002 to recognize the best examples of individual, local, and national efforts to improve patient safety and health care quality.
The awards were to have been announced in March during the National Quality Forum Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., but the conference was canceled due to the COVID19 pandemic. The last Pennsylvania health system to win an Eisenberg Award was the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Previous award winners have included well-known health care organizations across the country, including the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas, Kaiser Permanente, and Henry Ford Health System in Michigan. WellSpan Health received the Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization, or regional level.
WellSpan’s Sepsis Central Alert Team program earned the award as an example of successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient’s behalf. Begun in 2017, the Sepsis Central Alert Team is a group of registered nurses who have critical care and emergency medicine experience and who continuously monitor patients for signs of sepsis at five WellSpan hospitals from a remote location. The team is notified when WellSpan’s electronic health record system detects symptoms of sepsis in a patient’s vital signs, including temperature and heart rate, and lab results. When notified of these markers, the Sepsis Central Alert Team directly contacts the patient’s physician or nurse, so they can determine if the patient may be septic or clinically unstable and can consider administering life-saving drugs, fluids, and other interventions. WellSpan from pg 10
From your Garage, Barn, Basement, etc.
For families-community groups-churches-anyone! R060582 2
ARRIVING LATE?
The team has saved an estimated 350 lives since its inception, as it dramatically shortened the time it takes WellSpan to respond to sepsis cases and speeded up the time that patients receive lifesaving medications. Early identification and screening times improved from 67 minutes to 12 minutes. As a result, the percentage of WellSpan patients who receive both timely and effective sepsis care is better than both state and national averages. WellSpan reported that WellSpan York Hospital now boasts a sepsis survival rate in the top 1% of its peers nationally. The health system’s work in this area has attracted the attention of health care providers from across the country, with leaders sharing sepsis best practices with hospital and health system leaders from Massachusetts, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Virginia, and other states.
The Eisenberg Awards, given in three categories, bring together the quality community to recognize groundbreaking initiatives that are consistent with the aims of the National Quality Strategy: better care, healthy people and communities, and smarter spending. CEF Offers Online Summer Clubs This summer, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer six free Zoom Into FiveDay Clubs through July and August. Since the programs are online, transportation is not required. Each day, children ages 5 to 12 will play interactive games, hear a Bible lesson and learn a Scripture verse. Participants may select the week that works best for them and email info@ceflancaster.org to receive a registration form. Unless otherwise noted, clubs will meet from from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. from Mondays through Fridays. Clubs are scheduled for the weeks of July 6 to 10, July 13 to 17 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., July 20 to 24, July 27 to 31, Aug. 3 to 7, and Aug. 10 to 14. Registration is limited. Once registered, parents will receive a Zoom link to participate and children should have a device with audio and video capabilities (a microphone and camera). Clubs will be led by trained CEF workers who have current background clearances and have completed the child protection policy requirements. Parents are welcome to join the Zoom Into Five-Day Clubs with their children. CEF of Lancaster County has offered summer Five-Day Clubs for children for more than 75 years. For more information, readers may contact CEF at 717-569-5412 or the aforementioned email address.
Benefit Golf Outing Rescheduled
R060396
www.goodsstores.com
The annual Landis Adult Day Services Benefit Golf Outing, originally scheduled to be held on June 5, has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24. The event will take place at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Tee times will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Reservations have been transferred to July 24 for those who had already committed as sponsors or golfers for the June 5 event. The needs of Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) clients and their families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Clients are staying safe by staying home, but this change puts pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. Proceeds from the golf outing will help Landis ADS to prepare for clients’ return when the service is permitted to open. Registrations for sponsors and golfers will be accepted until Friday, July 10. To register and for more information, readers may visit https://landisadultday.org/golf/. Information is also available by contacting Janice Nikoloff, events specialist, at 717-381-3580. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registrations and sponsorships to be charitable donations to Landis ADS. Anyone who prefers his or her contribution to be handled differently may contact Nikoloff at jnikoloff@landis.org. For information about Foxchase Golf Club, readers may visit https://foxchasegolf.com/.
