Senior Center To Hold Open House By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The Next Gen Senior Services Inc. board members invite the entire community to join them as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the senior center with an open house on Thursday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Light refreshments will be available for visitors, and live gospel-bluegrass music will be performed by an Amish duet. “We want to get the word out that the center is here for everybody at no charge,” said board president Debbie Wright-Neff. Anyone age 60 and over is eligible for membership in the senior center. Participants may come for one program or stay through the day and enjoy time with friends. All regular activities are free, although donations are accepted to help keep the

nonprofit center operating. The Next-Gen Senior Center is located within the Quarryville Fairgrounds at 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The center serves residents from as far as Willow Street and Gap. For those who do not drive, Red Rose Transit may be available for transportation. The center is open Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a wide range of activities. One of the most popular programs is the Geri-Fit exercise classes offered each morning, with a higher level dance-exercise program on Fridays and a yoga class each Monday. Also available to senior center members at no charge are morning aqua-aerobics classes at the nearby SECA Pool. “We like to refer to it as the active senior center,” Wright-Neff said. Solid Rock Slates Second Rail Trail Race Saddlebag Riders Announce Third Biker Breakfast By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“We had 70 people last year. It went really well,” said Saddlebag Riders TEAM president Chuck Moore, reflecting on last year’s biker breakfast. It was the second breakfast the Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries (MJM) members had held, but it was the first at Washington Boro Park,

2010 River Road, Washington Boro. “Since this is a popular riding route, we wanted to be a stop for them,” explained Saddlebag Riders member John Young. The park is located along the Susquehanna River, and the scenic view is attractive for both bikers and automobile drivers. People came from as far as Lebanon last year, John noted. Competitors lined up for Solid Rock Youth Ministries’ inaugural 5K race on the Enola Low Grade Trail last year. This year’s event will be held on Aug. 3. By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Folks who want to be guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt must register for Solid Rock Youth Ministries’ second annual rail trail 5K race before Monday, July 8. After that date, T-shirts will be available as supplies last. This year’s event will be held on

Saturday, Aug. 3, at 8:30 a.m. It will again take place on the Enola Low Grade Trail, which was converted from a railroad to a level, wellgroomed path for runners and walkers. “The reason for having the race at the trail rather than (on) the road was to keep it kid-friendly,” said race director Mary Price. The Saddlebag Riders of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries will host a biker breakfast on July 6 at Washington Boro Park. Everyone is welcome.

The event is a fundraiser for Solid Rock, which operates a youth center at 34 E. State St., Quarryville. The organization provides after-school and summer programs for students in kindergarten through grade nine free of charge. Solid Rock’s mission is “to earn trust through authentic relationships so that lives can be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Price shared. Last year’s race attracted 178 participants and raised more than $7,000. “The first race went way better

It was incredible to see all of the ways God’s hand was in it and how faithful He was through the process.” Based on last year’s turnout, the organizers are anticipating a higher number of registrants this year. To keep the event comfortable, participation has been capped at 300. “Otherwise, it would be too crowded,” Price explained. Price noted that the organiz-

Fun run entrants will not receive a T-shirt. Additionally, the 5K race and fun run will start at a different spot. The trailhead at 301 E. State St., Quarryville, is larger and offers more parking than the one used last year, Price said. The fundraising goal for the upcoming 5K is $15,000. Participants may seek sponsors to help Solid Rock reach its goal. Costs have been set to participate in the 5K and the fun run, with a discount for folks who register in teams of five or more. Online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, July 31. Full price will be charged for 5K and fun run registration on Aug. 3. No team registration will be available at the event. For the first time, Freedom Life is participating in the global Serve Day on Saturday, July 13, and volunteers are needed to join Community Care Teams that will perform tasks in the neighborhood. According to www.serveday.com, the annual event provides churches across the world with opportunities “to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness.” Local volunteer opportunities will include landscaping, making repairs, washing vehicles, visiting elderly residents and cleaning homes. “(Serve Day) was started by a church in Alabama, and there are lots of churches all over the world that participate,” said Jane Garlock, Freedom Life’s event coordinator. “We’ve got a number of projects in the community in Chester and Lancaster counties.” Those who would like to participate in the event may register to volunteer at www.freedom.life/serve-day or by

downloading a Serve Day app. “Most of the projects are more appropriate for teenagers and above,” said Garlock. “On the app there are age filters. We did intentionally schedule a couple of projects open to children, and those are highlighted in the project descriptions. The app will direct you to search for a church, and you can find our church and the specific projects. The Serve Day app is free for anyone to download who wants to join in the project.” Since Freedom Life has three local campuses, projects will be offered in each area. In Christiana, teams will be at Minch Park, Pregnancy Resource Center at Cornerstone, a local home and Harrison House. In Coatesville, teams will be at Scott Field, Chester County Women’s Services, Good Works Inc. and Harrison House. In Quarryville, teams will be at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, the Quarryville Borough municipal building and Good’s Store for a free car wash. A detailed list of projects is available at www.freedom.life/serve-day. Teams will gather at one of three rally points at

8:30 a.m. for encouragement, instructions and a light breakfast. Supplies will be provided, and most of the tasks will be completed by noon. Garlock pointed out that the projects are being held at the church’s community partners. “We asked some of our community partners that we already work with and know if we could do something that would be helpful to them and a good way to serve them,” noted Garlock. “And we had (church) members suggest projects.” The church hopes to attract at least 300 volunteers. “We know that for some of the projects that are more ambitious, the more volunteers the better,” Garlock said. She noted that volunteering is a practical way to help the community. “People are excited to come together and make a difference,” said Garlock. “We are hoping that these selfless acts will be a blessing and fuel a passion for serving others in our communities.” For more information, readers may email jane@freedom.life or call 610593-5959.

This year’s breakfast will be held at the park on Saturday, July 6, from 7 to 11 a.m. Tank’s Taters will cook and sell a full breakfast, and folks may eat their meals in the pavilion. Members of the Saddlebag Riders will be available to talk with diners and offer bike blessings. Rita Young, who is married to John, noted that the event is casual, and while the group would love to discuss spiritual matters with attendees, the interaction will be optional. There will be no formal program. “They can get something to eat and keep going,” John added. Everyone is invited to the event, no matter how many wheels they arrive on. “Cages welcome,” he said, referring to automobiles in which drivers and passengers are enclosed. The breakfast will be held rain or shine. There is a cost for the meal. Additionally, the Saddlebag Riders will accept donations for the Wounded Warrior Pro-

ject. The Saddlebag Riders will not profit from the event. Instead, a chicken barbecue fundraiser for the Saddlebag Riders will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3. Open House from pg 1 center are the morning snack and the hot lunches every day. Lunch must be ordered by 9:30 a.m. of the preceding day. “It’s a good, balanced meal,” activities director Michelle Reeves said. This summer, the senior center has farm market vouchers available to seniors, provided by Lancaster County Office of Aging. Regular programs are supplemented by special activities, including field trips and informational programs. Other programs include music, health screenings, tax preparation assistance, Medicare information, and much more. The center is a spot for active people to socialize and enjoy a full day. “We really strive to let people know we are here so they can make new friends. Some of them need somewhere to go where they can exercise for free. We have really good services to offer to the seniors. There are so many different personalities, you’re going to fit in somewhere,” manager Carly Wienand said. The board would like to see more people take advantage of the programs at the center. “Hopefully, people will come in and see what goes on,” Reeves said. For more information, readers may call the Next Gen Senior Center at 717786-4770.

um’s climate-controlled Rolling Stock Hall. Visitors also may view Reading Company equipment from the museum’s collection, including the 101-year-old tank engine No. 1251, multiple unit car No. 800, Crusader observation car No. 1 and the 1928 turntable. The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) has awarded $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in both the Solanco and Lampeter-Strasburg high schools. The scholarships are awarded annually to students in each district who plan to pursue a career in business through postsecondary education or by starting their own business. The Solanco scholarship recipients are Henry Woy and Zachary Smith, while Jake Visniski received the Lampeter-Strasburg scholarship. The SLCCC obtains funding for the scholarships through its annual Shredding Event. Each year, local businesses, organizations and resi-

Donations are encouraged and are used by the Chamber to fund the annual college scholarships. For more information, readers may call Keith Kaufman, secretary of the SLCCC, at 717-786-5617.
