Stepping into stories

OnWednesday, July 19, the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will launch its StoryWalk, a permanent attraction that will allow participants to immerse themselves in children’s books. The opening event will begin at 10:30 a.m., and it will include a story reading and crafts for kids ages 2 to 8.

The event will begin with a reading of “Little Owl’s Day” by Divya Srinivasan, followed by owl-themed activities such as dissecting owl pellets and learning about their anatomy. Once the projects are finished, participants will trek through the StoryWalk. Pages from an illustrated book have been placed on signs along the path, allowing the kids to read the story and view the images as they walk. At the end of the path, the event will conclude with an activity where the children will draw their favorite part of the story. The current story will remain on the path for three weeks before it is

replaced with a new one.

After completing the walk, participants can submit their names and contact information. Each time the path is completed, up to three times, the participating family will have a chance to win a family pass to Longwood Gardens.

A StoryWalk is a project that was first created by Anne Ferguson and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vt. The goal for the project is to promote both physical activity and early literacy by combining a children’s book with a walking trail.

Sharon Roche, executive director of the Quarryville Library, first learned about the project in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the library’s programs were being held online, but Roche found that many people either didn’t have access to the internet or didn’t want to participate virtually.

Inspired by the StoryWalk project, Roche collected several leftover yard signs from the 2020 presidential election and used them to make

Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will hold a fundraising event on Sunday, July 9, at 2 p.m.

The fundraiser will feature presentations on the history of the church, along with live music and Scottish refreshments. Tickets are available to purchase at a set price by calling 717-548-2863 or emailing the church at office@chestnutlevel.org.

The event will include a talk from Nancy Groff, a member of CLPC and author of “Watt & Shand.” The book follows the story of Peter Watt and James Shand, Scottish merchants

who opened the Watt & Shand department store in Lancaster city in the building that is now the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. Groff always had an interest in the duo’s history, as Watt was her grandfather. While she was in college studying nursing, Groff took a sociology course as an elective. For one of her assignments, she needed to write a seven-page paper on her family’s history, and she started the process of chronicling Watt’s story. Groff’s extended family encouraged her to keep the paper and expand on it, and many of her classmates reached out for more information. She decided to turn her work into

“Watt & Shand,” which was published in 2022. Groff will sell copies of her book and posters of the church’s historic building during the event, and she will donate a percentage of the proceeds to CLPC.

The proceeds of the event will be used to pay for several projects that the church has completed to repair or improve the building over the years. CLPC was first founded in 1711, and it has required extensive work to incorporate and maintain the comforts of 21st-century accommodations. In recent years, the church has repainted worn areas of the building and added heating and airconditioning systems and a bathroom. Many of the projects have also restored parts of the structure that had become dilapidated.

CLPC was assisted with the renovations by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPTLC). HPTLC is a nonprofit organization that oversees construction projects to maintain buildings of historical significance throughout the county. HPTLC will offer a short presentation during the fundraiser.

In May, CLPC received the C. Emlen Urban Award from HPTLC, which gives out the award annually to those who have completed restoration projects while staying true to the original architect’s vision. The award is named after an architect who was responsible for dozens of historic buildings in Lancaster, including the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. HPLTC is headquartered in the former home of Andrew Elliott, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson and the man who trained Lewis and Clark to survey.

Banquet frompg 1

Help the Fight, a nonprofit organization based in Mountville, uses the funds raised from its annual banquet to meet the financial needs of breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County. These activities can include assisting with medical bills, rent and mortgage payments and electric bills. Help the Fight also allocates money to provide medical screenings and mammograms for patients. During the banquet, a patient who has been assisted by the organization will share her experiences.

Help the Fight was founded in 2009 by Lynda and Dave Charles, who organized the first banquet shortly after. Lynda was inspired to create the organization following the breast cancer diagnosis of her co-worker and Dave’s sister. The treatments prevented Lynda’s sister-in-law from working, and she was left without insurance or an income. Lynda decided to organize a bake sale as Help the Fight’s first fundraiser, raising over $9,000.

Help the Fight has come a long way from being a bake sale. Over the last 14 years,

recently, she served as the director of product management at FIS, a technology provider to the financial services industry, where she led a team of 200 employees to provide financial institutions, including ENB, with efficient and innovative solutions to everyday business needs. Through these experiences, Strohm is already familiar with ENB’s leadership, technology team, systems and innovation strategies.

Strohm holds a degree in economics from Valencia College and recently received the FIS Client Excellence Award. Throughout her career, she has served in various mentorship roles, including leading a women’s networking mentorship at FIS and STEM Goes Red, a mentorship program for teenage girls that is part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative.

the organization has continued to extend its reach and has raised over $1.1 million for breast cancer patients in the area. The annual banquet remains its largest fundraiser of the year. “All of the money we raise stays right here in the Lancaster area. We really pride ourselves on that,” Dailey said. “We’re so fortunate to have local businesses and people be a part of this and positively impact the community.”

Help the Fight is always looking for volunteers; those interested in volunteering can contact the office for more information.

Beyond her service with the American Heart Association, Strohm also volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando, Fla., and has coached both baseball and soccer. Strohm currently resides in Stevens, having recently relocated from Orlando.

herown version of it in 2021. She primed each sign, laminated several pages from a children’s book, attached the pages to the signs and lined them up along a path outside the library. The first “StoryPath,” as Roche called it, was a success; participants were able to enjoy the activity while remaining outside and complying with pandemic safety regulations.

Although the first StoryPath was a success, Roche began to encounter issues with its design. Due to the flimsy nature of the upcycled signs, they were prone to being carried off by the wind. Roche filed a grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services to created an official StoryWalk, and she was given

the resources needed to realize her vision. Working together with students from the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, Roche started the process of transforming the path into a permanent attraction at the library.

Roche hopes to use the new path for a variety of programs in the future, such as partnerships with local school districts that would allow them to host art exhibits along the trail. “To me, the sky’s the limit,” Roche said. “It’s always going to be great for stories, but what else can we use it for? We’re thrilled by the possibilities.”

Registration is required for the opening day of the StoryWalk. To register, visit https:// tinyurl.com/storywalklibrary.
