Solid Rock will hold 5K
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
SolidRock Youth Ministries will host its annual 5K on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Enola Low Grade Trail, 301 E. State St., Quarryville. Registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m., followed by a kids’ fun run at 8 a.m. and the 5K run at 8:30 a.m. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony after the end of the 5K. Preregistration is available at www.solidrockquarryville.com/run until Wednesday, Aug. 2, at midnight.
The proceeds from the event will assist Solid Rock with covering its various expenses and operating costs for its programs. The organization offers several programs for students from kindergarten to 12th grade and utilizes the funds raised from the 5K to keep each program free.
During the school year, Solid Rock provides after-school programs for students throughout the county. Over the summer, Solid Rock offers adventure programs for
younger kids, which entail activities such as hiking and wilderness exploration. It also offers a separate hiking program for students in middle school and high school.
Recently, Solid Rock offered a leadership program that was tailored for high school students. The organization’s youth director reached out to certain students who had participated in past programs and who had exhibited strong leadership qualities. Through the program, youngsters had an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills and receive training for leadership roles.
In addition to its student-only programming, Solid Rock offers events that include the entire family, such as movie nights, workshops and pool parties. The ministry often partners with local churches to make these events available to the community.
Solid Rock is currently in the first phase of a project that will procure a new location for its programs. The organization plans to move into See Solid Rock pg 4
Union Presbyterian Church posts yard sale
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Union Presbyterian Church (UPC), 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood, will host a yard sale on Friday, July 14, and on Saturday, July 15, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. A variety of items will be available to purchase, and the church will use the funds raised from the sale to support its mission work and several nonprofit organizations in the area. The items that will be available to purchase have been donated by members of UPC’s congregation and will include children’s toys,

household goods, clothing, men’s accessories and puzzles. This year, uncommon curios such as a wooden Arbuckle coffee box, an antique scythe, vintage books and a quilting frame will also be available to purchase.
UPC has organized the yard sale every summer for over 10 years.
“The sale is great because we clean out our houses and get rid of things we don’t want, which are treasures to other people,” said Colleen Sheaffer, organizer of the event. “It puts a lot of smiles on people’s faces.”
In April, Sophia Steinhauer returned from a six-month mission trip to Costa Rica. Although this wasn’t her first time traveling abroad, Steinhauer’s recent trip helped her gain some clarity about her path moving forward.
Steinhauer graduated from Solanco High School in 2020 and took a mission trip to Paraguay shortly after. There, she discovered an affinity for South American culture. Upon her return, she began working as a barista upon her return to Lancaster. Steinhauer currently works at Latte Luv in Strasburg (when she’s not overseas).
Ever since Steinhauer’s first trip, she’s been thinking of ways that she could combine her passion for coffee, South American culture and serving the community. An opportunity presented itself through Atlas Travel and Study Abroad, a program that would allow her to learn Spanish, study the Bible and return to South America at the same time. Steinhauer left in September to live in Santo Domingo for the duration of the program.
Once she arrived in Costa Rica, Steinhauer was immediately faced with a variety of challenges. Although she had studied Spanish for years, she still experienced a language barrier between herself and

Program to share church history
The Solanco Historical Society will host a program titled “The History of Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church” on Saturday, July 15, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway. The presenter will be Barry Girvin.

the locals. “It was a really humbling experience. Nothing prepares you for being in the entire world of fluent people,” Steinhauer said.
On weekdays, Steinhauer had six hours of training: three were dedicated to learning Spanish, and three were reserved for biblical theology classes. The classes were taught by professors from across Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Steinhauer said the most rewarding aspect of the program was living alongside the locals and developing a bond with them as they shared their culture with her. Many local cafes let her work their espresso machines behind the counter and taught her various techniques as Steinhauer fostered friendships with the owners.
“The goodbyes were hard,” Steinhauer added.
On weekends, Steinhauer and her classmates split into groups and traveled to various locations throughout the country. In San Ramon, Steinhauer’s group assisted with the training of young Costa Ricans as they prepared to take mission trips to Southeast Asia. The training entailed Bible study and methods of connecting with people from different cultures through the common thread of Jesus Christ’s teachings. “Many of them were young adults like us. We worked alongside them, encouraging and challenging them,” Steinhauer said. Atlas Travel and Study Abroad partners with different ministries in Costa Rica to allow its members to assist with missionary training.
Before embarking on her most recent trip, Steinhauer had a vision to open her own coffee shop in South America to raise funds for survivors of sex trafficking and domestic abuse. Her vision has changed slightly, and she now hopes to open a business in the United States with the same goal in mind. In the fall, Steinhauer will attend Lancaster Bible College to study business administration and to minor in intercultural studies.
“(As a result of studying abroad,) I feel way more confident in the pursuit of my calling and purpose in this world,” Steinhauer said. “I’m open to my path changing and being led by the Lord, but I’m pursuing coffee because I love it. I’ve seen myself grow so much through it.”
