riving through southern Lancaster County, people are met with picturesque views of lush and verdant farmland. Surrounded by this seeming abundance, it might be difficult for people to imagine that poverty and homelessness exist in the Southern End. But for some residents, these situations are an everyday reality. Fortunately, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) can help.
A silent auction will feature hot air balloon rides, baskets from Central Market, gift cards from restaurants, and more.
event will take place at Britain Hill Venue and Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the ministry through the eyes of families and individuals who sought assistance from SNM. There will be a photo gallery where these families and individuals will share the impact that SNM had on their lives. There will also be food trucks, wine, live music, and a silent auction where participants will be able to bid on hot air balloon rides, baskets from Central Market in Lancaster, gift cards from restaurants, and more. “I think it will be really eye opening for people to look at the photo gallery and read the stories,” said executive director Teresa Dolan. “People will see how much need is down here and see that the families we help are no different than any other family.” Entry to the event is free, but freewill offerings will be accepted. Although it is not required, registration is encouraged. Registration can be completed at https://bit.ly/ neighborhoodministries. dementia. Based on this statistic, dementia kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is known as the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. A team of staff members from Caring Hospice Services (CHS), 101 Good Drive, Lancaster, participates in the walk every year and to raise awareness and donate to Alzheimer’s research. “We participate because the Alzheimer’s Association is doing the cutting-edge research and they’re finding treatments to help improve the quality of life for those with the disease,” stated CHS volunteer coordinator Mary Lawhead. “This disease has no true, direct cure. The research is necessary and has to grow.”

In 2010, there was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig located in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in what is believed to be the largest marine oil spill in history. After hearing about the oil spill, something sparked in Washington Boro resident Tracie Young. “I saw all those animals covered in oil, and I was so upset,” recalled Tracie. “I cried every day.” Tracie applied to help save the animals, but Deepwater Horizon denied her application because she was not a wildlife rehabilitator. Shortly after, one night when Tracie and her husband, Kurt, were driving home from dinner, Tracie witnessed a vehicle hit a goose and drive away. Immediately, the Tracie pulled off to the side of the road to rescue the goose. It took her three days to find a rehabilitation center for the goose, and it was located an hour and a half away. After arriving at Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County, Tracie saw

brochures for wildlife rehabilitation classes. Soon enough, Tracie realized her dream was to help animals. After receiving permits from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tracie opened Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC) in 2015. Although located in Washington Boro, RRWC treats animals from roughly 17 counties in Pennsylvania. Every year, RRWC rehabilitates nearly 2,000 animals and is the home to several nonreleasable animals. “A lot of people don’t realize the dedication,” said Tracie. “It’s not a job. It’s a lifestyle. It’s seven days a week, 365 days a year. No vacations, no days off.” Some of the non-releasable animals serve as educational ambassadors in RRWC programs. RRWC offers off-site programs for birthday parties, schools, camps, clubs, and more. The programs are suitable for people of all ages and can be tailored to fit the groups’ needs.

Tracie noted that wildlife rehabilitation centers are very important. Most people do not have the knowledge to take care of injured wildlife, which is why Tracie encourages members of the public to call RRWC if they come across wildlife in need of assistance. “Do not feed the animals,” stated Tracie. “Put the animal in a dark place to relax and give us a call.” For more information about RRWC, visit https:// ravenridgewildlifecenter.org or search for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook. The fun family event supports the work of Align Life Ministries. As of May 17, over $316,000 had been raised, which exceeded the $265,000 goal, and donations and pledges were still being processed. Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Pennsylvania’s venomous snake season runs from June 12 through Saturday, July 31. With this season in mind, Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary has created a YouTube video encouraging people to watch out for snakes and informing them about the reptiles. Rothacker stresses that snakes are not easy to see, often do not want to hurt people, and do not want to be stepped on. To view the video, search for “Copperheads and Roller Skates” on www.youtube.com. The Forgotten Friend Reptile TV channel on YouTube has a number of other informational videos, as well.

The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce has awarded $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco and Penn Manor school districts. The scholarships are awarded annually to students in these districts who will pursue a career in business through
postsecondary education or by starting a business of their own. The 2021 recipients are Jack Swarr from LampeterStrasburg, Faith Redcay from Solanco and Daniel Bowman from Penn Manor. The Chamber obtains funding for the scholarships through its annual shredding event. Local
residents, businesses and organizations are invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paper-based materials for shredding to the event. All shredded material is recycled. Donations are encouraged and are used to fund the annual college scholarships. The next shredding event is being planned for the fall.

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will bring “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” back to its stage on Thursday, Aug. 5, after closing its previous run at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The return of the show will also mark the theater’s first show operating at 100% capacity after more than a year of following the state mandates that had been in place from COVID-19. “Grumpy Old Men: The Musical” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from
The Solanco Odyssey of the Mind team recently placed seventh in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Orlando, Fla. The members of the Odyssey of the Mind team are Katie Jensen, Dennis Kretzing, Autumn Butler, Josie Janssen, Brady Janssen, Taelor Martin, and Aidan Todd. The group’s chosen problem involved a superhero escaping from danger using a pair of socks that convey a special power. “They improved their previous long-term problem score by 10 points and got a 45.66/50 on their artistic elements,” noted Caley Roark, Solanco High School teacher of the gifted program and Odyssey of the Mind coach. Stops along the way to the World Finals included the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at the National Air and Space Museum; St. Augustine, the oldest continuous European settlement in the U.S.; and the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force in Savannah, Ga. The students also attended a Durham Bulls minor league baseball game and ate authentic South Carolina barbecue. Friends of Fishing Creek will hold a workday on Sunday, July 18. Volunteers are welcome and should meet at Drumore Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore, at 8:30 a.m. The purpose of the workday is to remove more than 10 rock dams from the Lancaster Conservancy’s South Fishing Creek Preserve, which stretches along 3 miles of the stream. These dams were constructed by visitors to the preserve, and they have a negative impact on aquatic life. Rock dams built in creeks and streams raise the temperature of the water, cause silt and sediment buildup, and destroy macroinvertebrate and fish habitat. In addition to removing the dams, visitors will hang temporary posters in the preserve to let people know why the
dams have been removed and to remind people that if they construct a dam, they need to remove it the same day. Fishing Creek has been designated as a high-quality coldwater stream, and it is one of the few local places where native trout can still be found. These fish need colder water temperatures to survive. The public is also reminded not to leave any trash behind after visiting a nature preserve. Local residents are encouraged to volunteer with any of the groups that work to improve the Fishing Creek watershed. These groups include the Lancaster Conservancy, Donegal Trout Unlimited, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, and Friends of Fishing Creek.

Local Author Releases Book, Sets Signing

“Behind Fences: A Prison Chaplain’s Story,” a 284-page book with its roots in Lancaster County, was released in early June by author Esther Zeiset, who resides near Newmanstown. The book is about Esther’s husband, Nelson, and his 33-year career in prison chaplaincy. The Zeisets will hold a book signing event on Friday, July 23, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tin Roof Cafe n’ Sweets, 108 N. Reading Road, Ephrata. Nelson sensed a call to prison ministry as a 12-yearold Mennonite boy. From that day in 1973, he ordered his life to fulfill the purpose of taking the Gospel message of hope and redemption to prisons. Readers of Esther’s book will learn of God’s faithfulness through the 1980s AIDS epidemic, the Camp Hill prison riot, lawsuits and an inmate’s calculated scheme against Nelson, and of a prison church’s growth and crumbling racial walls. “Behind Fences” urges the reader to discover and pursue his or her own life calling and to view God’s faithfulness on that journey. The author interspersed her own perspectives as the Zeisets’ family life intersected with Nelson’s ministry. She has published inspirational articles, devotions, and fiction in The Secret Place, The Upper Room, Power for Living, War Cry and varied local publications. “Behind Fences” is available through Masthof Press, on Amazon and at local retailers.
