Cross-Country Bike Trip Benefits K-9 Partners By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Quarryville native Ron Storms recently moved to Oregon, where he started work as a contractor. As he traveled coast to coast to complete the move to a new home, he thought he could be doing something good along the way as well. Starting out from Lincoln City, Ore., on March 1, Storms biked cross-country with his Labrador retriever, Onyx, in tow as a fundraiser for Canine Partners for Life of Cochranville. Having lived in the area, Storms was familiar with Canine Partners for Life. He also has an empathy for helping those with disabilities, such as his aunt Jane Storms. That was the beginning of Onyx’s Great Adventure. “I decided I wanted to do something unique,” Storms said. “As I was moving my life back from Pennsylvania to Oregon, I
kept looking at the shoulders of the roads. I thought, ‘I’m going to walk this with Onyx,’ then ‘No, I’m not going to do that to his hips. It’s too much.’ Then I had the idea of doing a covered wagon.” The idea to bike cross-country with the dog took planning and preparation by Storms and his partner, Meghan Shreiner. The dog could not be expected to keep up with the bike, so a bike trailer was prepared for Onyx. Since the trip was likely to be more than one dog could comfortably handle, Phoenix, also a black Lab, came along as well, taking over for Onyx from time to time. Even with two dogs, there were going to be times when the weather was too harsh or the traffic situation too dangerous for a dog to ride in the bike trailer. Instead, a life-size wooden sculpture of a dog took the spot in the trailer. In all, rider, bike, trailer and dog weighed about 300 pounds. See Onyx’s Great Adventure pg 9
Feeding The Hungry (Pets) In Southern Lancaster County The Humane League of Lancaster County, a partner of Humane Pennsylvania, is excited to announce its partnership with the Solanco Neighborhood (SN) Ministries food bank. Together, the two organizations will provide crucial pet food resources to pet owners in need through Spike’s Pet Pantry. Spike’s Pet Pantry is a pet food bank program that provides resources, specifically food and nutrition education, for pet owners. The goal is to prevent pet surrender due to food insecurity or temporary hardship. See Spike’s Pet Pantry pg 8
Solanco Neighborhood Ministries executive director Teresa Dolan (left) and Humane Pennsylvania lifesaving programs coordinator Tawny Kissinger hosted the first pet food distribution event through Spike’s Pet Pantry in Quarryville on July 6. Spike’s Pet Pantry will provide pet food and other resources for cat and dog owners who have financial need.
Ron Storms (left), with support from Meghan Shreiner, made the trip by bicycle from Lincoln City, Ore., to Cochranville along with his dogs Onyx and Phoenix, as well as a life-size model of a dog (far right), to raise funds for Canine Partners For Life.
MHALC Forges Partnership To Foster Suicide Prevention By Ann Mead Ash
Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), is excited about the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition (SPC) project to put gun lock kits in the hands of those who purchase firearms. “It’s a new initiative,” said Leckow of the effort that brings together SPC, the local arm of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the West Lampeter Township Police Department, and Morr’s Shooting Range and Gun Shop. SPC, a creation of MHALC, is working in partnership with other local entities to put gun lock kits in the hands of each person who purchases a gun in See Partnership pg 3

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position. hopes of preventing both suicides and unintentional deaths by firearm. Leckow explained that the time of purchase is a crucial moment. “(If the clerk says,) ‘We are trying to prevent suicide by firearm, and we’d like you to accept this (free) lock’ … at that possible point of interaction that may … dissuade someone having mental health issues (from using) a firearm against themself,” explained Leckow. Leckow noted that MHALC would like to see gun shop owners and personnel receive QPR Suicide Prevention Training. QPR stands for “Question Persuade Refer.” Training will teach personnel to recognize warning signs that an individual is in suicide crisis and to ask questions and refer that person for help. come through Parkesburg around 11:15 a.m. and Cochranville close to 11:30 a.m.,” Jill noted. “I speak to the Lionville Middle School Patriots Club, and every year there are a few teachers and students who come out and wave their flags when we go down Route 113.” She noted that the ride has grown through the years. “The first year there were 80 bikes; we have had as many as 280 bikes. We usually raise between $8,000 and $10,000,” said Jill, adding that Brandon’s fellow service members travel from as far away as Spokane, Wash., and Tulsa, Okla., to join the ride. The scholarships are intended to finance the cost of items that are not provided by the military. “The purpose is to help other men and women who are carrying Brandon’s torch,” said Jill. “They can use the (scholarship money) for things the military requires but doesn’t supply or use it to come home to visit their family. They don’t get free trips home. If it gets them home one time, it’s worth it.” For more information about Brandon and the ride, readers may visit at www.cplbrandon hardy.com. Pictured on front:
The 14th annual Cpl. Brandon Hardy Memorial Ride will be held on July 20, beginning and ending at the Gap Fire Hall. All proceeds will benefit the Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was established after Brandon was killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2006.

Spike’s Pet Pantry from pg 1 This collaboration between Spike’s Pet Panty and the food bank run by SN Ministries is aligned with the mission of Humane Pennsylvania to provide accessible resources for families facing pet food insecurity. As opposed to families having to surrender their beloved furry family member due to momentary difficulties, Spike’s Pet Pantry provides proper nutrition for pets to remain in their familiar and loving environments. The success of Spike’s Pet Pantry is dependent upon community support and donations. If adequate donations for Spike’s Pet Pantry are available, pet food resources will be offered to community members on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The first distribution was held on July 6. In order to receive pet food supplies from Spike’s Pet Pantry, dog and cat owners must be current clients of SN Ministries. Community members wishing to receive services must register in advance by visiting the SN Ministries office, 349 Buck Road, Quarryville, and filling out an application. During the planning for the new partnership, SN Ministries executive director Teresa Dolan shared this message with the team: “This program would be so helpful for our families

because many of them have pets. Many individuals are struggling financially and find it difficult to purchase pet food. Also, for many elderly folks on a tight budget, their pets are their only companions. We know that pets can be expensive, but we also know they are often considered part of the family. We are glad to be able to partner with the Humane League of Lancaster County to meet this need and to ease individuals’ worry and financial burden.” One of the most effective ways to decrease the number of animals in shelters is to keep them from entering in the first place. W hen hard times lead good pet owners to have to make the decision to feed their pets or feed their families, Humane Pennsylvania’s Spike’s Pet Pantry is there to make that decision a little easier. SN Ministries will not be accepting pet food donations directly. Instead, anyone wishing to donate may contact Tawny Kissinger, lifesaving programs coordinator, at tkissinger@ humanepa.org or 717-393-6551, ext. 240, to make arrangements to donate to the Humane League of Lancaster County. For more information about Spike’s Pet Pantry, readers may visit https://humanepa.org/ services/spikes-pet-pantry/. For specifics regarding the SN Ministries food bank, folks may call 717-786-4308. Readers are invited to use the hashtags #SpikesPetPantry and #NoPetHungry to follow the relief efforts on social media.

“It gives us a little bit of purpose in the tragedy,” said Jill Hardy when describing the fundraising motorcycle ride that is held annually in honor of her son, Brandon, who was killed in action in 2006 at the age of 25, while a member of the United States Marine Corps. This year, the 14th annual Cpl. Brandon Hardy Memorial Ride will be held on Saturday, July 20, beginning and ending at the Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m.; coffee and doughnuts will be available. The ride will leave promptly at 9 a.m. and return at approximately 1 p.m., when lunch will be served. It is a bittersweet tribute to their hometown hero,” Jill said. “Our next stop is Herr Foods Visitor Center, where they open the center for us and have water and snacks. From there, we go through Little Britain, Quarryville, and Nickel Mines past Brandon’s grave, where the riders go slowly in tribute to Brandon.” The 107-mile ride will end back at Gap Fire Hall, where the riders will be given a lunch of pulled pork, chicken barbecue, homemade baked beans, potato salad and dessert. Jill noted that corporate sponsors contribute to the ride and that local fire companies and police departments are on hand to ensure the riders’ safety. Brandon, a graduate of the Octorara Area School District, was killed in 2006 in Al Anbar, Iraq. “Warren (Brandon’s father) and I decided the day we got the terrible news that we needed to honor Brandon and glorify God through this tragedy,” said Jill, who is the school board and superintendent secretary for the Octorara Area School District. “We do that by giving $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are entering the military. To date, we have awarded $112,000 in scholarships. I also do speaking engagements to tell Brandon’s story so others can understand his sacrifice.” The ride, which will take place rain or shine, will leave Gap Fire Hall and proceed down Route 30 to Route 113 to Route 100 to the Chester Springs Harley-Davidson, where participants will be treated to soft pretzels and water. Along the way, there were interviews and events to help encourage donations, and a Facebook page and website recorded daily progress over 2,700 miles through 10 states. Onyx’s Great Adventure made it to Quarryville in time for Fourth of July celebrations and time with family before the conclusion of the trip on July 14. Anyone interested in joining the effort was invited to meet at Manor Presbyterian Church to ride, run, or walk the final threequarters of a mile to Canine Partners for Life at 334 Faggs Manor Road, Cochranville. A celebration for the completion of the trip followed at Canine Partners for Life “I would like to do something

A wooden cap on the bed of their pickup truck was decorated with information on the trip and the fundraiser as well as designs with a special, personal meaning. Each of the paw prints on the sides of the cover represents one of Storms’ dogs that has passed away, while angel wings symbolize important people in his life who have passed away. The cross-country trip included extreme conditions including snow, the slopes of the Rockies, and dangerous road conditions. The Lancaster County 8 Ball League held its annual Harry Hutchinson - Jack Byerly Charity 8 Ball Tournament earlier this year to raise money for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County. The more than $18,000 raised by the Lancaster County 8 Ball League was supplemented by $15,000 from Riverside Camping Association, which hosted the event. Checks were presented on May 13 at Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster. CASA executive director Jessica Laspino and staff members were present to accept the checks. The Charity 8 Ball Tournament was established in memory of Harry Hutchinson and Jack Byerly, two founding members of the Lancaster County 8 Ball League. In 2010, the Lancaster County 8-Ball League approached CASA and offered to aid children in Lancaster County by naming CASA as the tournament charity partner. Since that first tournament, more than $1 million has been donated to CASA as tournament proceeds and matching funds. CASA of Lancaster County provides qualified and compassionate court-appointed volunteer advocacy for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. CASA’s services are provided in the belief that every child deserves a safe, nurturing, and permanent home. CASA volunteers believe that growing up in a safe home is a fundamental human right. For information about being a part of CASA’s efforts, readers may call 717-208-3280, email casa@CASAlancaster.org, or visit www.casalancaster.org.
