Get to know your neighbor at upcoming fundraiser for SNM
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 N. Little Britain Road, Quarryville, will host its annual fundraiser for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. The rain-or-shine event will highlight SNM’s efforts to serve the community, and it will feature live entertainment, auctions and various food trucks. Admission to the fundraiser will be free, but attendees are encouraged to register online in advance at https://tinyurl.com/ SNMbritainhill24.
Food and beverages will be available to purchase from food trucks such as 22BBQ and Italian Oven on Wheels, and Penny’s Ice Cream will vend frozen desserts during the fundraiser. The event will also include a silent auction as well as a live auction for the first time this year. Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on a variety of items and experiences, including tickets to the Fulton Theatre, an antique quilt, two vouchers for a glassblowing class and a sailing activity on Chesapeake Bay.
Britain Hill first hosted the annual fundraiser shortly after the coronavirus pandemic, when SNM’s executive director, Teresa Dolan, proposed a collaboration for a new event called “Do You Know Your Neighbor?” The goal of the event was to give members of the public insight on different types of programs SNM offers the Southern End, which comprise more than its food bank in Quarryville. During the first fundraiser at Britain Hill, SNM representatives set up stations to highlight specific areas of focus, including rent and utility assistance, and
initiatives to distribute gas cards, diapers and school supplies to local families.
“This event not only brings awareness of what services (SNM) has to offer, but it’s proved to be a great fundraiser for them,” said Debbie Helm, the owner of Britain Hill. Since founding the venue in 2017, Helm and her husband, Ken, have frequently organized events to give local nonprofits a platform and amplify their impact in the community.
Representatives from SNM will be present to share information on the nonprofit’s many programs and to accept donations from supporters. Donations and the proceeds from both auctions will help SNM cover its operational costs and program expenses, as well as help the organization fund a new initiative to combat housing insecurity across Lancaster County. “We’re definitely seeing an uptick in the number of people facing issues with housing,” said
Christal Pritchard, SNM’s housing resource advocate. “Our goal is to holistically address the problem through a program that helps individuals get out of a cycle of homelessness.” Pritchard added that SNM is in the early stages of designing the program, but it hopes to build relationships with landlords and to offer budgeting plans as part of the new initiative.

When it comes to service organizations, young people have a variety of groups to choose from. Popular youth service organizations include the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts, but a lesser-known alternative is the Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program. While the cadet program shares several values and teaches similar lessons as Scouting troops, there are many things that set it apart - which is why Sara Dalrymple of Kirkwood decided to join her local squadron. Sara, a rising freshman at Solanco High School, joined the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 in October 2023. Sara’s parents, Windsor and Berna Dalrymple, discovered the program while searching for enrichment opportunities for Sara and her younger sister, Leyla. Windsor and Berna were homeschooling both children, and they frequently take Sara and Leyla on trips to visit museums and participate in educational activities to make sure the school day never gets boring. “Education is something that’s important to all of us,” Windsor said. “We try to make it a fun pastime, not just sitting at a desk.”
After contacting Civil Air Patrol, Windsor and Berna periodically received learning kits that primarily focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics lessons. Windsor, who works as a paramedic, said he was familiar with Civil Air Patrol due to its involvement in search and rescue efforts, but he and Berna were impressed

Presentation to feature historical railroads
Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, July 20, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Stanley White will present “Railroads of Holtwood Large and Small.” The program was originally scheduled for January but was canceled due to snow. White, for many years the president of the Solanco Historical Society and now a director, has spent many hours researching the railroads of Southern Lancaster County, as well as investigating the Holtwood Dam. He has scanned more than 6,000 pictures of these and closely related subjects for the historical society, and he has selected a few of them to share at the upcoming program. White will tell the story of the Columbia and Port Deposit branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Holtwood, as well as how rails helped in the construction of the dam and how the smaller company railroads were involved in the service of the Pennsylvania Water and Power Company.

with the depth and quality of the material. The Dalrymple family found the nearest squadron was located in Lititz, and after making a trip to check it out, Sara said she was immediately intrigued. “I thought it was a very interesting program, and I thought it was cool how they organized it,” Sara added.
Since October, Sara has regularly attended weekly meetings that include a variety of lessons on safety, leadership and aerospace. The last meeting of every month incorporates a promotion night, where cadets can receive a new rank based on the activities and courses they have completed. As an auxiliary of the Air Force, the program also incorporates elements of military courtesy such as drill tests and uniform inspections, which can also help a cadet earn a new rank.
Sara was named Cadet of the Month on June 11 for attending every meeting in May, completing eServices training and passing online examinations.
“I already had an idea in mind for what career I
might pursue, but this has helped me grow more,” Sara said. “I’m interested in studying science, but there are multiple pathways.” Former cadets who decide to join the Air Force have opportunities to jump rank and get a head-start at the Air Force Academy.
“It’s worthwhile for parents to know there’s another group available,” Windsor said. “(Civil Air Patrol) has almost every form of science, and they’re interested in seeing kids become the best they can be.”

Toys for Tots’ Touch-A-Truck is vehicle for enhancing young lives
BY JEFF FALK
Lancaster Toys for Tots continues to do amazing things in our community. But it’s work that can’t be done alone, or without the support of many generous donors.
Lancaster Toys for Tots’ latest venture, Touch-ATruck Family Day, looks to build off that altruistic spirit and take the organization’s work to a whole different level.
“We’re helping kids in Lancaster County, and there’s a big need in Lancaster County,” said Gil Bixler, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ coordinator for the last 37 years. “I’ve got a fantastic team of volunteers who just enjoy doing it. That’s what it takes to make it all happen. They work harder than I do.”
Associated with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-A-Truck
Family Day is a brand-new, kid-friendly event. It will be held outdoors at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster, near Tires Plus, on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is free to attend, but families are encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy. It is also being used as a way to draw attention to autism.
“Park City came to us and said, ‘What do you think of this idea?’” said Bixler. “We thought it was great. The goal is to create awareness and supply toys for autism groups. Autism is more prevalent than you and I know. We want to get the public more aware of the needs of these children.”
On hand that day will be nearly 100 vehicles - cop cars, fire trucks, emergency medical services vehicles and tow trucks - as well as a LifeLion helicopter and a state police helicopter.

Many members and representatives of police departments from Lancaster County townships and Lancaster County’s first responders will be present.

Up to 500 people are expected to attend.

Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day will also include food trucks.
“I perceive it being a growing event every year,” said Bixler, himself a retired Marine. “It’ll be a lot of families, a lot of kids, a lot of fun. The state police will show the kids their helicopter. They can climb all over the fire trucks. And they can get in the cop cars and the officers will explain what they do.”
Lancaster Toys for Tots also raises funds for its annual Christmas toy drive for local underprivileged children by conducting a golf outing at Overlook Golf Course in May, by hosting car shows in the spring and fall and through a motorcycle ride in October.
In 2023, Lancaster Toys for Tots distributed 63,523 toys and supported 15,138 children, mostly from Lancaster County. Those toys were provided through monetary donations to Lancaster Toys for Tots and through 7,000 collection bins placed throughout the county.
“Through those donations, we support 56 other organizations,” said Bixler. “Where else can you help so many children at one

Local author explores the beauty of Amish gardens
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lancaster County is widely known for its large population of Amish residents and other members of the Plain community. Horses and buggies are an iconic part of the area’s distinct character, and although the Amish are especially fond of their privacy, local residents and tourists are able to observe several customs that are unique to the modest group. But there are many Amish traditions that few people outside the Plain community are familiar with, including the topic of Beth Oberholtzer’s new book, “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County.”
Oberholtzer’s latest work explores the time-honored Amish tradition of cultivating a kitchen garden, which is maintained by the women of the household to serve a variety of purposes. The gardens are used to feed large families with a diverse range of vegetables, fruits and herbs that
serve as integral parts of family recipes, many of which have been passed down through generations. The kitchen gardens are also utilized as places for members of the household to plant flowers and foster different types of artistry and creativity.
“One of the pleasures of researching this book and talking to the gardeners was learning how the gardens are really portraits of the women who create and sustain them,” Oberholtzer said. “It is how they nourish their families, a way to connect with their children, and an expression of their own creativity.”
Oberholtzer had the idea to write “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” while she was visiting local Amish farms and conducting research for her previous book, “Working Horses of Lancaster County.” Oberholtzer said she noticed that each Amish home included a large garden, and she began to learn
about them from the wives of the horse owners she was interviewing. “I got an inkling of their responsibilities and joys in gardening and preserving food for their families,” Oberholtzer added. “Some information I gleaned was common across most gardens, while some was unique to a particular gardener.”
Oberholtzer will discuss “Amish Gardens of Lancaster County” on Thursday, July 25, at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The free event will begin at 6:30 p.m., and no registration is required to attend.
