Shopping Fair To Benefit Cat-Rescue Efforts By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We’re partnering to get cats adopted,” Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.” Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. Furever Home operates a feline sanctuary and adoption center at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, while the Pet Pantry, headquartered at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, cares for cats and other animals, offers low-cost vaccinations and spay/neuter services, and supplies pet food for households experiencing financial
distress. The Pet Pantry’s veterinarians have been able to treat illnesses and injuries in cats taken in by Furever Home, and Furever Home has cared for felines accepted by the Pet Pantry that do better in a cage-free environment where they can socialize with other animals. The two organizations also share volunteers. Now, the Pet Pantry has signed on to help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home),” Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County.” The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event See Shopping Fair pg 6

Program To Discuss Publishing Process LCAA To Host Festive Exhibit Kickoff With the invention of electronic books and the introduction of tools to self-publish printed tomes, it has become easier than ever for writers to become published authors. The publication process will be the subject of a new program, “Telling Stories: From Idea to Publication,” offered by Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. “I came up with the idea of having an author present a three-part writing series that would cover from the time you have an idea to having the book published,” said library director Sylvia Drennen, who explained that she developed the program with “Banebringer” author Carol A. Park. “She was here for Author’s Night, and during some of our communication she expressed how she enjoys talking about

will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be welcome. The Pet Pantry’s canine ambassador, Sasha, is slated to be on hand to meet with shoppers. More than 100 vendors, crafters, and local businesses have registered to participate in the event, which Furever Home fundraising chair Tina Krueger has carefully coordinated. “I want the consumer to have a wonderful shopping experience,” Krueger said. The first 100 adults to visit the shopping fair will receive goodie bags. There will be opportunities to win prizes and to participate in a vendor passport game. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are enough volunteers to run concessions rather than outsourcing to a food truck. A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks

The “Roadside Attractions” art exhibit will be on display in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery from July 22 to Thursday, Aug. 16. Summer is traditionally the time for road trips and vacations, so this themed membership show will focus on things on and off the road. Members of the art association have depicted their interpretation of roadside attractions in a variety of mediums and techniques.

may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. The wish list includes canned kitten food, wet or dry cat food, kitten meal replacement liquid, powdered kitten formula, paper towels, and bleach. The need for supplies is great. Between the two organizations, more than 500 cats have found forever families in the past year. Currently, the Pet Pantry has more than 50 cats in foster homes and 20 felines in its adoption room. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as at Water Street Mission. “ We’re trying to touch as many people as possible,” Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach. Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that Furever Home can use folks to clean the adoption center or to attend networking events to provide education about the organization. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the summer shopping fair, and sponsorships are available. Krueger invites folks with vendor, sponsorship, and volunteer inquiries to contact her at flippers1@aol.com or 717808-8108. grass and employee sponsors rubbed his stomach, Langton noted, “He is not afraid of crowds.â€? Herold met Woody for the first time when UDS held a sponsor meet-and-greet event just before Woody left for Moshannon. “This is the first time we have sponsored a service dog,â€? said Herold, adding that the idea was brought to the company by an employee whose spouse is associated with UDS. During the training period, Herold receives updates concerning Woody, which she passes along to employees. One of the privileges sponsors appreciate is the honor of helping to choose a moniker for their designated pup. “We had a company contest to name him,â€? said Herold, who passed along the three suggestions that received the most votes to UDS. “(Because UDS staff members) don’t know what disabilities the person he is matched with will have, they consider names for how easily they can be pronounced, so his name will work with anyone who is assigned to him,â€? Herold said, adding that she was glad “Woodyâ€? was chosen because it reflects the company name. Herold said that when company staff first heard about the service dog sponsorship program, they were intrigued. “We said, ‘Wow, this is something we want to do,’â€? she shared. “It’s a win-win.â€? Herold explained that the employee sponsors were happy to know they are helping the inmate who is training the dog because that person receives the opportunity to become certified as a trainer and gain competence in an area.

abilities Services Foundation (UDS) staff accountant Mary Langton (left) and Erika Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, were happy to visit with Woody (center), who is in training to become a UDS service dog. “Isn’t he handsome? Erika Herold practically gushed. Herold’s praise was not for a significant other or family member. Rather, it was bestowed on 6-month-old yellow Labrador named Woody who was happily rolling in the grass at Herold’s feet. Herold, a logistics analyst at Woodstream Corporation in Lititz, and other Woodstream employees raised $5,000 to sponsor Woody to become a United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) service dog. Woody is several months into the BARKS Prison Program, through which he is being trained by an inmate at Moshannon Valley Correction Center in Phillipsburg. While at the prison, Woody is living with his inmate handler around the clock. The inmate training program has proven to be successful. Normally, inmates teach puppies up to 50 commands, but many dogs are reaching that goal ahead of schedule. On June 8, Woody, accompanied by UDS staff accountant Mary Langton, visited Woody’s sponsors when the corporation held a company picnic at its facility. Langton said that Woody will spend a total of 18 months working with a designated inmate. “Woody will come back to us for (his) final six months of training to refine the skills he will need to (work with) the client he is chosen (to serve), explained Langton. Langton is pleased with Woody’s progress so far. “He is very smart, and he seems to bond quickly, she said. As Woody lolled in the

“When he comes out (of prison, the inmate) has training to (work with) service dogs. It gives him a niche skill, said Herold. Of course, Herold is most excited about the chance Woody has to positively affect the life of a person with a disability. “He is going to be a lifeline, said Herold. “(Woody) will affect not just the person, but their whole family, and he can give someone their life back. That gives me chills. Herold is looking forward to the road ahead as Woody grows and learns the skills he will need to be a service dog. “Our sponsorship is for two years, and at the end we get to go to his graduation, said Herold. “What really touches me is that it is a long program that will have an effect for years down the road. Jeffrey Finegan
On Thursday, July 26, Rock Ford Plantation will welcome author Jeffrey Finegan, who will present the lecture “My Dear General: The Extraordinary Relationship Between George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.” The lecture is based on Finegan’s young reader’s book about the father-son relationship forged between Washington and the young French aristocrat who traveled from France to fight in the American Revolution. “My Dear General” joins Finegan’s two previous works to complete a three-part series titled I Knew George Washington. Each of the books looks at the life of Washington through the perspective of historic figures who were closely associated with him. A native of New Jersey, Finegan has conducted
lectures and book signings at Colonial Williamsburg, National Historic Parks, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, and Washington Crossing Historic Park. This lecture will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Rock Ford Barn. Reservations are not required, but seating is limited. Admission is free for members of the Rock Ford Foundation, and a set fee will be charged to nonmembers. All proceeds from the event will benefit Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster. This year’s Sommer Singspiel, a day camp hosted by the Lancaster Liederkranz, will take students entering grades three through 12 on a virtual journey through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9. “The students will learn vocabulary about the different modes of transportation available in Europe as well as packing items and famous destinations,” said Lisa Sempsey, who is one of four certified educators who will teach various aspects of German music and dances during the camp. “The music will be a wonderful mix of traditional pieces as well as students experiencing and creating music to accompany their ‘journey’ across the German-speaking parts of Europe. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity
to create and play instruments from some nontraditional materials,” she explained. “It’s going to be a blast!” Sommer Singspiel, which in German means “play and sing in the summer,” is in its fourth year. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a learn-by-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in
a fun, kid-friendly way,” said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and promotes in them a love of community music-making (and) a sense of cultural heritage and gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German language learning interspersed with experiences that stem from

German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.” The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. On a corner in Akron, where Main Street and Route 272 intersect, a small building is home to Bible Visuals International (BVI). The organization, which was founded nearly 60 years ago by area resident Helen Odenwelder, meets needs around the world for visual teaching materials about God. Tom Luttmann, executive director of BVI, explained that the organization has endeavored to bring the Bible to children and adults in three ways. “We have visualized Bible lessons, which we are updating with a colorization process; visualized biographies of missionaries and other Christians from different eras; and visualized songs for children to sing and (take part in) worship together,” said Luttmann. BVI held its 59th anniversary banquet, with a gathering of nearly 300 attendees, on May 10. Tim Keesee, executive director with Frontline Missions International, served as keynote speaker. Frontline is an organization known for taking the Gospel into difficult regions of the world. The choice of Keesee as speaker was appropriate, as BVI began when Odenwelder was directing Child Evangelism Fellowship outreaches and searching for a publishing ministry to supply the

Thousands gather at a Bible study held in India by Sam Gunti, a partner of Bible Visuals International (BVI), which is located in Akron. Gunti uses BVI materials, and his work is one example of how the ministry reaches out to spread the Gospel to all nations. process of transforming offerings to give more options to those who need them. “We have great resources, but they don’t have to be in just (one) format,” Luttmann said. “There’s a new generation of children and ministry workers who know more about technology, and they are looking for resources they can download or put on a tablet.” BVI is working to make resources available digitally and as downloads, and Luttmann is excited to see where the materials are being utilized. “There are huge opportunities in technology to get resources to ministry partners.” In addition to special licensing agreements that allow for the use of materials by others, Luttmann described another opportunity that came through an online
retailer that offers on-demand printing so that individuals in other countries can have copies of BVI materials printed closer to home. Gordon Denlinger, who serves as treasurer for the organization, called BVI a hidden gem and noted that volunteers are needed to serve the organization in a variety of capacities. “It doesn’t get any better than helping children see Jesus and come to know Him in a faith way,” he said. “We want to make sure the Gospel is being presented.” BVI, a nonprofit organization located at 650 Main St., Akron, is overseen by a nine-member board. clubs that were hosted in people’s backyards,” explained Luttmann. “It’s a ministry that grew in scope with Helen’s vision to supply materials not just locally but internationally.” Updating materials that were created some years ago has been an important goal for BVI. Luttmann explained how help in accomplishing that feat is being provided by Sam Gunti, who runs large Bible camps - reaching as many as 18,000 children in a camp - in India. BVI had worked with Gunti to translate and print materials for his gatherings, and Gunti decided to return the favor. During a visit to BVI a few years ago, Gunti brought a thumb drive of updated BVI materials in full color. “It would have cost us quite a bit (to update those materials, so Gunti’s gift) has provided a good foundation,” Luttmann noted. Locally, BVI has worked with Bible2School, a Manheim-based mentorship program that offers free, weekly Bible elective classes for public school students in several Lancaster County school districts. “(Bible2School) is growing, and they needed more visuals to go with their curriculum,” said Luttmann. “It would be an expensive process (for Bible2School) to have new illustrations put together, (so) we looked through our curriculum and found visuals that would match their lessons.” Luttmann said BVI is in the

Identity theft is a serious concern that affects millions of people. The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that 15.4 million consumers in the United States were affected by identity theft of some form in 2016. In those instances, $16 billion was stolen. Protecting one’s identity is not as complicated as it may seem, and it can safeguard consumers against fraud and theft. People should password protect all smartphones and other digital devices. Many are used to transmit sensitive information and may store passwords and other data that connects to financial institutions. People should never click on links in unsolicited emails. malware or computer viruses. People should not provide Social Security numbers, birth dates, or other personal information to unsolicited callers, no matter how official they may sound. The same password or PIN should not be used on multiple sites. Passwords should vary, and a combination of numbers, symbols, and uppercase letters should be used to make it more difficult for thieves to decode. People should not keep all credit cards or important identification cards in a wallet at all times. Private records and statements should be shredded or destroyed. People should monitor their credit report. Consumers can receive a free credit report from the three major credit agencies free of charge each year. Any inconsistencies should be addressed and reported promptly.
In May, the Lancaster Public Library received $3,500 in grant funding to support summer literacy. The library is the recipient of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading grant ($2,000), as well as the Rotary Summer Youth Experience 2018 grant ($1,500), administered by the United Way of Lancaster County. The income will fund the Ticket 2 Read initiative. Ticket 2 Read is a summer reading enrichment program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade to enhance literacy skills by introducing children to books and educational content during their summer break. Children from urban summer camps who visit the library on field trips
will be introduced to themed weeks of literacy activities facilitated by a professional librarian. The desired outcome is to enhance the children’s reading level during non-school months and prepare them for the next school year. In addition to offering a variety of fun, engaging, and educational programs, the Summer Reading Program prioritizes reading as an important daily activity to help prevent the “summer slide.” To learn more, readers may visit www.LancasterPublicLibrary.org /2018-summer-reading-program.

During the 1979-1980 school year, the Manheim Central School Board gave permission for a released time religious education program to begin for fifth-graders - whose parents approved - to be released from class for one hour each week to learn about the Bible. Known then as Manheim Central Weekday Religious Education (WRE), the program has evolved through the years and officially became known as Bible2School in 2011, according to assistant director Stephanie Smith. Today, second- through fourthgrade students at elementary schools in the districts of Manheim Central, Conestoga Valley, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township, and Lancaster have the opportunity to participate in weekly Bible teaching during the school day thanks to Bible2School. Each year Bible2School hosts a celebration event for its volunteers and supporters. As the organization gears up for its 40th anniversary celebration fundraiser in March 2019, staff members would like to invite individuals who have been students in the program - in the beginning when it was referred to as WRE or in any subsequent years - to share their stories and memories so they can be included in the celebration. Details for the annual celebration
continue.” Smith mentioned that some local folks still refer to Bible2School as WRE, and many of the local churches in Manheim that supported it in its early years are still involved today in working with Bible2School to provide biblical education opportunities to public school students throughout Lancaster County and beyond. A newspaper clipping from March 1979 lists the following churches as members of the Manheim Central Christian Education Council, the group that put in the request for a released time program: Manheim Brethren in Christ, Chiques Church of the Brethren, East Fairview Church of the Brethren, White Oak Church of the Brethren, Hope Episcopal, St. Paul Episcopal, St. Paul Lutheran, Erb’s Mennonite, Erisman Mennonite, Trinity Evangelical, Jerusalem United Church of Christ (UCC), St. Paul UCC, Chiques United Methodist, Ruhl’s United Methodist, and Salem United Methodist. According to the article, the council formed as a result of a decision by the Manheim Ministerial Association to explore the possibility of offering released time religious education. To learn more about Bible2School and ways to support its mission to teach the Bible to public school children and show them their unique value in Jesus Christ, readers may visit www.bible2school.com.
The Lancaster Public Library recently received $3,500 in grant funding to support summer literacy. The grant will fund Ticket 2 Read, a summer reading enrichment program for children.

NYC Holiday Ramble Posted
! E L A S D A O L K C U TR
Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a Holiday Ramble to New York City (NYC) on Sunday, Dec. 2. Museum travelers will have a docent-guided tour of the world-famous, historic landmark Grand Central Terminal and learn its story of great engineering, architectural achievement, survival, and rebirth. There will be free time for attendees to shop the annual Holiday Fair and Grand Central’s 60 stores and enjoy lunch on their own. Ramblers also will experience the New York Botanical Garden, a 250acre National Historic Landmark which supports more than 1 million living plants in extensive collections of tropical, temperate, and desert flora. One highlight will be the annual Holiday Train Show, set in the conservatory with its scaled iconic buildings and structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, and the Statue of Liberty, which are recreated using bark, leaves, and other natural materials. Numerous model trains operate over nearly a half-mile of track and under thousands of twinkling lights. Also included in the ramble is roundtrip motorcoach transportation from Lancaster or King of Prussia. The rate for current Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania members will be discounted. Nonmembers will pay full price. The deadline for registration is Monday, Oct. 1. For complete details and a registration form, readers may visit www.rrmuseumpa.org. Registrations will be accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis. Individuals may call after the deadline to check availability. Friends of the Railroad Museum will offer another customized travel opportunity in 2018. The Chester County Ramble will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, and the deadline for registration is Wednesday, Aug. 1. More information is available on the museum’s website.
