Committee members for the Disaster Relief Golf Tournament sponsored by the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren include (front, from left) Earle Hershey, Lucille Wenger, Phil Hershey, (back) Ben Wenger, Jim Kreider, Linda Bledsoe, and Ron Bolt. The tournament will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club.
The 25th annual Disaster Relief Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren (MGCOB), is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. The tournament history started with Stanley Kreider, who had a vision to raise funds to help victims of natural disasters when he brought home $10 in “grow money” from the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction many years ago. His vision was to grow the money via a golf tournament. He did not know exactly how to run a golf tournament, but he knew someone who could do the job. That someone was Earle Hershey. Now, 25 years later, Stanley’s vision and Earle’s leadership have resulted in the collection of $270,000 to assist those who have been affected by natural disasters. All monies raised support disaster relief locally and around the world. See Golf Outing pg 7
Solanco Family Life Network Marks Five Years The Solanco Family Life Network (SFLN) marked five years of serving the community on June 18 at a meeting at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. The organization has grown steadily over the past five years from a collaboration of local ministries, organizations, and the Solanco School District to a group that now includes more than 60 social and community organizations as well as county, regional, and state-level resources. Representatives of the cooperating groups meet monthly to address community needs and identify services to benefit the community. Through these efforts, community members now have free access to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, high school equivalency (HSE) classes, early childhood literacy classes, career counseling, trauma counseling, and more. Folks may log on to www.solanco family.com, where they may recommend themselves or others for services. The big question asked by SFLN is “Do You Know a Family in Need?” The logo of a yellow umbrella with a red heart symbolizes the relief that can be found through the organization’s services when life rains down. A yellow umbrella marks the computer station at the Quarryville Library where folks may go directly to the SFLN website. Referrals through the website are handled confidentially and quickly. More than 160 individuals have received help through website referrals. One of the many success stories is that of a Solanco High School student who faced personal obstacles to completing her high school career. The high school counselor helped her to enroll in the Lancaster Academy, and through SFLN, the student connected with a local mentor who provided transportation and support as she completed her coursework and attained a high school diploma. Day Flower Foundation. “ We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. More information about the Red Rose Blue Star Moms may be found at www.redrosebluestarmoms.org or by searching for “Red Rose Blue Star Moms” on Facebook.

Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer
Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “ We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey
with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach atrisk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a crosscountry bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will

Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste Huyard, appears at their doorstep. Following her lead, the children experience a series of memorable adventures, accompanied by Mary’s sidekick, Bert, played by Gavin Haas, that impact the entire family, including the mother, Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and
because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins.” “The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke,” said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people.” According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there,” said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful

Campers participating in the Cavod Academy musical theater camp set to take place at The Junction Center in Manheim beginning Monday, July 29, will perform the show “Mary Poppins Jr.” at The Junction Center on Aug. 10 and 11 at 2 and 7 p.m.

Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a readthrough. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin rehearsals at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The

Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers. Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show. “Bring the children to The Junction Center,” he said. “It’s a cool space, and you get to see where WJTL broadcasts from.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. The Junior League of Lancaster Inc. (JLL) has announced Charlotte Molitoris as this year’s winner of the Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. The Penn Manor High School (PMHS) 2019 graduate received a $1,800 prize, of which $300 will be donated to Water Street Mission, Charlotte’s chosen charity. Charlotte is a recipient of the Gold Award presented by the Girls Scouts of the United States of America. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. For her capstone project, Charlotte created a program called “What’s Next?” for juniors and seniors at PMHS who were unsure if college was the best path for them after high school graduation. She connected her peers with retired teachers so that the students could receive advice and feedback about options for their future. Charlotte was also a national delegate for the Girl Scouts and traveled to Columbus, Ohio, with her fellow delegates from the Girls Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. Charlotte was the co-president for the International Thespian Society within PMHS theater, a volunteer at the Humane League and a member of the National Honor Society.

A Summer Experience With Purpose
Campers who took part in the VisionCorps of Lancaster Camp Cool from June 17 to 21 experienced horseback riding, along with kayaking, cooking, and a number of other activities that help them work to achieve independence.
Jennifer Eaton, manager of youth services with VisionCorps of Lancaster, laid out the rules early for the campers who took part in Camp Cool from June 17 to 21. The campers, each of whom has a vision impairment, were told that they were not allowed to come to Eaton and say, “I can’t (do something).” “They could say, ‘I need help’ or ‘I’m scared to do this,’” said Eaton. The idea behind the banned phrase was to encourage the 8- to 12-year-old students from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties to creatively utilize the expanded core curriculum that camp leaders had set out for the week. “(The curriculum is) a set
of tools that children with vision loss need to have in order to lead successful, independent lives,” explained Eaton, who added that the curriculum focuses on several areas: social interaction; transportation; orientation and mobility; recreation; assistive technology; independent living skills; career education; compensatory skills, which comprise reading and writing in different communication modes such as braille and large print; visual efficiency skills; and self-advocacy, such as asking for assistance when needed. All of the activities the campers participated in helped them to develop in these areas. On June 17, the campers journeyed to Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which is in Reinholds and is
overseen by Laura Rutledge. “(Horseback riding is) a great recreational activity for children with vision loss (because of) the sensory input, the connection with the animal, and the sense of independence they get from riding,” said Eaton. “The (campers) think they are here just to play with the horse, but it’s so much more than that.” Camp Cool also included a kayaking trip to Indiantown Gap, where the group worked with Team River Runner in a program that was designed for veterans. Camp leaders began working to bolster social confidence with ice breaker games on the first day of camp. “We will work on socialization all week,” said Eaton, who noted that a train ride to Harrisburg was on the agenda to pro-
mote use of public transportation. “We will visit the State Museum, tour the Capitol, and ride the riverboat cruise, and … they will experience what it’s like to call for an Uber.” Eaton noted that visionimpaired campers can utilize a smartphone using VoiceOver. The campers also shopped for groceries. “(Campers received) a list of what they need to purchase, and they needed to locate the items within the store,” said Eaton, explaining that they planned to use Aira, a new technology available in certain public locations. “(Campers) can call in and get a live person who uses the camera on the phone to guide them through the grocery store,” explained Eaton, who added that campers would be encouraged to

Food Safety Course Set Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager - and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension is offering a ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course in room 149 at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 29, and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5. The certification exam will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 5. This in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe

During lunch at Wegman’s, campers were required to ask for large print and braille menus at the café. Eaton noted that money management would be tested. “Each (camper) will have cash and have to know what denomination they are handing the clerk,” she said, noting that there are apps available to help those with very limited vision.

“I believe SFLN is making a difference,” remarked elementary school principal Kay Bandy. Through a community needs assessment, SFLN has identified and will continue to identify needs and create connections with organizations that provide free or low-cost access to services. The collaboration makes it possible to bring the services to the Southern End by using existing facilities. As a result of SFLN, Solid Rock Youth Ministries teamed up with COBYS to host a kinship workshop to help grandparents who are the primary caregivers for children. The Southern End Community Association partnered with Intermediate Unit 13 and the Literacy Council to host ESL and HSE classes. The Quarryville Library and CareerLink hosted career planning seminars. The Solanco School District and the Literacy Council offered early childhood literacy seminars. Other participating organizations include Compass Mark, Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, New Hope Community Life Ministries, and the United Way. SFLN is connected to other similar networks throughout the county through United Way’s Collective Impact approach to community support. “This creates tremendous opportunity for groups to share resources rather than replicate them. That means that limited financial and human resources are used effectively,” said Martin Hudacs, who co-chairs the network with Joe Bernotsky. Hudacs noted that one of SFLN’s challenges is getting information out to the community on what it does. “As we look forward, we will look for high-profile ways to publicize our work. We will use our website, local media, and other resources to help people know that there are resources in our backyard that will provide free services to address issues,” he said. Steph Lininger has retired from her role as Solanco High School principal, but she will continue her connection with SFLN by taking on the role of project manager. She will coordinate projects that various organizations are teaming up to create. These include a trauma counseling center, mentorship for students and adults, adult literacy programs, and more. “Mrs. Lininger’s addition to the SFLN leadership team shows her commitment to the community and the positive impact SFLN is having,” Hudacs said. For more information about SFLN, readers may visit www.solancofamily.com or contact Bernotsky at joeberno@ gmail.com, Hudacs at mjhudacs@ gmail.com, or Lininger at bistta3 @yahoo.com.

Penn State Extension researchers have reported that the hatching of spotted lanternfly eggs in Pennsylvania is mostly complete for this season, and the nymphal stages of the insect are evident in Lancaster County, as well as in counties across southeast Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and west-central New Jersey. The earliest instar of spotted lanternfly (SLF), which began appearing in late April, is about the size of a tick and is black with small white spots. Two more stages follow, identical except for slightly larger size. The fourth instar is red with black and white spots and is about a half-inch long and is just now making an appearance. These four nymphs can hop but cannot fly. They feed on tender plant tissues, gradually moving to woody plants and trees as their greater size allows them to feed through bark. By mid- to late July, the fourth instars will transform into the adult, which has wings and can feed on mature trees. The spotted lanternfly is an

invasive insect that affects gardens and landscape plants as well as important Pennsylvania commodities. The quarantine for spotted lanternfly has expanded to include 14 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania as well as a few counties in neighboring states. It has continued to proliferate in some areas within the quarantined area. The strategy from the beginning has been to contain the invasion while Penn State scientists and other researchers around the world work to unravel the biology of this insect. The goal is to find safe and effective controls both for commercial growers and for homeowners. Recently, researchers have discovered two fungal pathogens that attack and kill spotted lanternfly. More research is ongoing to further evaluate if this can be utilized to reduce populations of spotted lanternfly. A concern from the beginning of this invasion has been that there will be an overreaction of widespread chemical use, which itself could be a risk. Beth Finlay, area Master Gardener coordinator for Penn State Extension, explains that SLF is not difficult to kill chemically, but that the same insecticides that many homeowners might employ are lethal to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators and can find their way up the food chain to birds and other wildlife. For most residents, Penn State Master Gardeners recommend
simple mechanical management in lieu of chemical management. Stomping, swatting, or hosing with a sharp water blast can kill or disable thousands of SLF without introducing toxic products. There are situations that might justify use of pesticides. If so, Penn State researchers urge residents to use only registered pesticide products and to follow the label instructions carefully. Residents may also consider hiring a licensed applicator, who will have access to Penn State Extension’s current professional guidelines. In addition, banding trees with sticky flypaper will capture hundreds of nymphs and adults, since the feeding habit of all stages is to feed, drop to the ground, and climb up tree trunks to feed again. One simple three-to-five-inch band placed about chest level is sufficient. Penn State warns that there is a risk of capturing songbirds, bats, butterflies and other desirable creatures on the sticky tapes, and it cautions that every band should have a cage of chicken wire or hardware cloth placed around the tree, outside the band, to keep wildlife off the tape. For detailed factsheets on SLF and for customized advice on how to deal with infestations, homeowners may call Penn State Master Gardener Garden Hotline at 717-394-6851 or visit https://extension.psu.edu /spotted-lanternfly.

Americans for the Arts has honored “This Neighborhood Is …” among 50 outstanding public arts projects created in 2018 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, a national program that specifically recognizes compelling public art. Chosen by public art experts, the roster of selected projects was unveiled on June 14 at Americans for the Arts’ annual convention in Minneapolis. This is the 18th year that Americans for the Arts has recognized public art works. The mural, a public art project led by Lancaster residents Salina Almanzar and Osmyn Oree, was installed on the façade of the Water Street Mission along South Water Street, across from Culliton Park, in September 2018. Residents were invited to finish the sentence, “This neighborhood is” and sit for a portrait. Over three days in September, Almanzar and Oree, along with
volunteers from the community, installed 20 portraits and 25 responses on the wall of the Water Street Mission. All participants were invited to help install the mural. Volunteers were provided lunch during each day of installation and were gifted a free print of their portrait as a thank-you. The mural was the final product of four months of community engagement regarding the renovation of Culliton Park. Two independent public art experts - artist Seitu Jones of St. Paul, Minn., and Aaron Ott, curator of public art at Albirght Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y. - discussed the trends they uncovered while examining hundreds of submissions in selecting this year’s choices for the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2018. More information is available at www.lancasterpublicart.com.

As visitors walk into “The Power of Children: Making a Difference,” a new traveling exhibition at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, they will experience the powerful stories of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. Although alive in different places and times, each child endured extreme prejudice and made a positive impact on the world. The exhibit is designed to encourage children and families to explore problems of isolation, fear, and prejudice by giving a face to the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic. Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her
family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne’s bestselling diary is a testament to the power of words. Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and pro-

vide educational resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide. Finally, visitors will learn about Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII. North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid because he’s different or sick,” Stoesz said. “You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of
