Homeschooling is a popular method of education for families in almost every part of Lancaster County, and there are many different groups that offer homeschoolers an opportunity to connect with their peers in a classroom setting. These co-ops often combine the experience of their members to incorporate a diverse selection of courses that are difficult to obtain at home, such as physical education activities and other forms of enrichment. Despite the wide variety of co-ops that are available to local homeschoolers, residents of Solanco and other parts of the county that are more remote have often needed to travel to other communities to connect with the nearest group. To provide a closer alternative for students in the Southern End,
Jen Hershey and three of her fellow homeschooling parents created Christian Homeschoolers of Oxford and Solanco (CHOS).
Hershey and the other co-founders of CHOS are all members of Mount Vernon Christian Church in Kirkwood, and they began discussing the idea of a new co-op last fall. For the last six years, Hershey and her children have been members of a co-op in Lampeter, but she said she has entertained the idea of creating a more local group for many years. Multiple other members of Mount Vernon’s congregation, which includes several other families that homeschool their children, vocalized a similar desire to have a more convenient alternative. In March, Hershey and the other parents organized a trial run for the new co-op at the church to determine how it would be structured, and the response

Compass Mark aims to stop addiction before it starts
BY JEFF FALK
Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community. The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,” “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”
The ultimate goal is to manage and curb addiction or control the behavioral part of
it that can be controlled.
“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other choices and to connect with people in healthy ways.”

Although Joyfully Made Fellowship regularly organizes fundraising events throughout the year, this is the first time the group will hold an event that incorporates a car wash, a barbecue and a bake sale. The event is being coordinated by Celeste Esposito and her husband, Eric, whose daughter Bella has attended Joyfully Made Fellowship programs for the last nine years. Eric, who has culinary experience preparing food for weddings and other events in the past, will prepare the food for
the barbecue portion of the fundraiser. Additional food will be available to purchase during the event, including items such as hot dogs, beverages and cookies. Several parents and caregivers of Joyfully Made Fellowship members will sell coffee and a variety of homemade baked goods, including brownies and pastries.
Celeste said she decided to help organize the new fundraiser to assist Joyfully Made Fellowship’s founder, Tami Shaub. In addition to managing the ministry’s programs and activities, Shaub organizes events such as the annual talent show. After seeing the value of Shaub’s programs firsthand as the parents of a longtime participant, Celeste and Eric said they wished to express their gratitude to Shaub while helping her sustain the group. “(Shaub) goes above and beyond for this ministry. She’s a wonderful lady,

and the students personally love her,” added Celeste. “It’s truly a wonderful thing for our students to be able to go somewhere they feel comfortable. Everybody in the group is really caring and understanding.”
Another goal of the new fundraiser is to help Joyfully Made Fellowship cover its operating costs and utility expenses for the facility that it hosts its activities in. The group previously met
at Wesley Church in Quarryville, and it transitioned to its current location on Mt. Hope Road last year.
“We hope people in the community come check (the fundraiser) out, even if they just stop by to say hi to everyone,” Celeste said. “They’re all a bunch of really caring individuals who love getting together, singing and sharing a meal.”

Compass Mark
Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. It drives its message home through workshops, skill-building, student assistance programs and good old-fashioned communication and interaction.
Last school year, Compass Mark connected with 8,000 kids in 66 schools from 28 school districts in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties.
“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how prevention works. We’re actually saving lives. For every dollar spent on prevention, you’re saving $18 in the future. You’re saving taxpayers by nipping it in the bud.”
Some of the factors that put kids at risk for addiction
include low commitment toward school, parental attitudes favorable toward antisocial behavior, low perceived risk of drug use and low neighborhood attachment.
“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much, much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”
Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 full-time workers and about 20 part-time staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.
“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often and talking to

kids early. When kids are younger, they’re sponges. They just soak it in. They’re at an age when they still think (adults) know what they’re talking about.”
Compass Mark was founded in 1966 as the National Council for Alcoholism, Lancaster County. Then
the organization’s scope was broadened in the 1970s and ’80s to include a focus on preventing illegal drug use, and later gambling.
“We’ve evolved with the community,” said Steffen. For additional information on Compass Mark, go to www.compassmark.org.

Reading of new play set
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform will present a reading of “The Onboarding Testimonial,” a new play by award-winning playwright Bruce Walsh, on Saturday, July 27. The event will take place at 11 a.m. at the Franklin & Marshall College Philadelphia Alumni Writers House, 633 College Ave., Lancaster. It is co-sponsored by Creative Works of Lancaster.
The play, set in 2070, features a corporate human resources department that discovers that none of the current staff members is capable of creating personal statements without AI assistance. The department seeks to hire an elderly millennial to help.
Since Walsh received his Master of Fine Arts in
playwriting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2017, his plays have been produced across the country, winning the Heideman Award, the Kennedy Center’s Gary Garrison National Ten Minute Play Award, and the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition. Previously, he was a longtime arts reporter for the Philadelphia Metro and City Paper. He currently teaches literature, creative writing, and theater at Messiah University and Elizabethtown College.
Walsh has been selected as a 2025 William Inge Center playwright in residence, giving him the opportunity to live in Inge’s boyhood home for five weeks.
The reading is free and open to the public, with donations accepted to help
cover expenses. For more information, email lancasterdramatists@gmail.com or visit www.lancasterdrama tists.org.
The Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform was formed in 2005 and has presented many plays by various members, several of which have been developed into fully staged productions. The group meets biweekly to read and discuss new work, as well as to plan and rehearse public readings, giving playwrights a chance to hear their words performed by actors in front of an audience. More information is available at the aforementioned website or by emailing the previously mentioned address.

from participants was overwhelmingly positive.
“We finally felt this was the time,” Hershey said. “We live in Kirkwood, and there’s another co-op near Wrightsdale, but there’s always been a kind of hole here in the southeastern part of the county, so we’re hoping to fill that gap and provide an option for families in the area.”
CHOS will kick off its first official semester on Friday, Sept. 27, and the group will meet every other Friday for six weeks. Each day of classes will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Classes will be available to students from preschool to 12th grade in subjects relating to music, physical education, science, art, history, language studies and personal finance. Nursery care will also be offered to parents with young children. CHOS does not currently
offer academic classes, but rather focuses on elective courses to enrich students’ homeschooling curricula.
“I first started going to a co-op because we needed to get out of the house, and I wanted my kids to be able to interact with other students and teachers other than me,” Hershey said. “The longer I was there, the more I saw the value not just for myself in the suggestions and advice from other moms, but in the way my kids were making friends and enjoying it. I’m hoping to build that same kind of community here.”
Registration for the 2024-25 school year must be completed before Thursday, Aug. 1. To register for classes or to learn more, visit www.homeschool-life .com/pa/chos or email Alicia Hardy at choshome school@gmail.com.

Exhibit to feature items from the ocean
The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, recently opened an exhibit titled “Shallow Seas.”
The exhibit showcases specimens of sea life, shells, and plants from the more than 250,000 objects in the North Museum’s collection. These items depict life that is present in the Caribbean Sea, the coastal Atlantic Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean, and how each has developed traits to survive and sometimes thrive in its environment.
The exhibit includes items that have not been displayed since the

1960s, and it is the first exhibit to be fully curated from North Museum’s collections.
Visitors may lend their creative touch to a collaborative artwork project by coloring pictures of underwater life and adding them to a depiction of a coral reef.
The exhibit is self-directed through signage and bold graphics, which are presented in both English and Spanish.
“Shallow Seas” will remain a main exhibit of the North Museum through May 31, 2025. Now in its 72nd year, the North Museum
impacts thousands of local students and their families annually through its education initiatives in the museum, in the community, and at home. Programs include field trips, early childhood education programs, summer camps, STEM Sisters, the Science and Engineering Fair for middle and high school students, and many other programs designed to create access to free and reduced-cost STEM learning opportunities and to strengthen the foundation of youths in the Lancaster community and beyond.

members from across Pennsylvania who came together to attend and volunteer at the annual Cadet Training Schools at Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville from June 16 to 23. The program featured rigorous training, including basic encampment training, a leadership development course, a STEM Academy, and advanced training for the color guard.
Cadets sought to learn about military drill and customs, leadership, aviation, and science; improve mental and physical fitness; and demonstrate CAP’s core values of integrity, community service, respect, and excellence. Despite the hot weather, the cadets completed the intensive training sessions. Approximately 275 cadets participated along with more than 100 adult and cadet staff members.
The Lancaster CAP cadets who attended the encampments include Cadet Staff Sgt. Carter Bojako, Cadet Master Sgt. Mark Weinheimer, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Bruce Gentry, Cadet Airman First Class Sara Dalrymple, Cadet Staff Sgt. Brendon Ortiz, and Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Colby Smith. Cadet staff volunteers included Cadet 2nd Lt. Aaron Keohane, Cadet 2nd Lt. Jereco Acosta, Cadet Maj. Slater Shannon, and Cadet Capt. Judah Acosta. Squadron 304’s adult members who volunteered were 2nd Lt. Craig Shannon, adult member Daisy Ortiz, and 1st Lt. Donny Reisch.
Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets at 7 p.m. each Monday except holidays in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located at the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome.
The Civil Air Patrol is the official civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
