Celebrating 100 Years Of Life BY COURTNEY MENGEL
On July 25, 1921, Vanda Nesti Bennett was born in Pistoia - a city in the region of Tuscany, Italy. When Vanda was 9 years old, she and her family left Italy and came to America. After docking in Ellis Island, they took a train to Pittsburgh, where Vanda’s father worked in a steel mill. After marrying her husband, Van William Bennett, in 1948, Vanda gave birth to four children: Bill, Bob, Mary Jean, and Kathy. Although she spent most of her life in America, Vanda kept to her Italian roots. “She always made us homemade ravioli,” said her son See 100 Years pg 2

Students Take A Byte Out Of Robotics BY COURTNEY MENGEL
or one week in July, Todd Brown, technology education teacher at Solanco High School, hosted a summer robotics camp. Over 40 students between grades four and seven attended the camp. “The turnout was wonderful for it being the first time we ever did something like this,” noted Brown. At the camp, students learned the basics of robotics and coding principles and then used this foundation to solve real-world robotic
F
problem scenarios. One of the problems that the students were asked to solve involved an autonomous driving robot and gave students an idea of the challenges that Tesla, Uber, and Google are facing with their self-driving autonomous vehicles. Another challenge the students encountered was to develop a robot that can pick up an object from a certain location and place the object into a box. This project was similar to a robot that Amazon uses to pick items in its warehouse and prepare them for shipping.
“I was amazed at how in-depth and complex the students got,” recalled Brown. “They did research and brought in their own ideas. The initiative they took was inspiring.” The camp aimed to introduce students to basic coding principles that can be used in a variety of coding languages, expose students to robotics and autonomous technologies, and create and encourage excitement toward technology, innovation, and STEM learning. “We have a certain population that misses out on summer camps
because they’re not involved in sports, so I asked myself, ‘Why don’t we have an academic camp?’” said Brown. “I hope that the seeds planted during the robotics camp will grow over the years, and I’m excited to see where they go.” Solanco High School students Kyle Fisher, Adam Noel, and Trent McDowell served as mentors for the duration of camp. “The mentors did a fantastic job of helping out,” stated Brown. Brown noted that he hopes robotics camp will return every summer.

Bill. “She even sent me ravioli when I was stationed at a German air base for three years!” For 20 years, Vanda ran her own drapery business. She said she takes pride in the fact that she never advertised her business; people saw her work and called in to place an order. In fact, her husband made curtain rods for the drapes, and after she would finish making a set, he would hang them for her. “My husband was the handiest man I ever knew,” recalled Vanda. Van William never finished high school, so it was very important to him that his children attended college. “All four of them went to college and they all got scholarships,” shared Vanda. “I’m proud of my family.” Having just turned 100-

years-old, Vanda says that her age has never held her back. “Her idea of relaxation is working all day, and she’s only mad when she’s bored,” explained Bill. Vanda has volunteered throughout her entire life and recently sewed over 400 bibs for people in skilled care at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), where she is a residential living resident. Holly Metzler, a receptionist at QPRC, noted that Vanda is an amazing woman. “She is a wonderful lady,” stated Metzler. “At night, the lobby turns into a fun place where all the residents gather and have a laugh until about 9 p.m.” Metzler explained that the residents gather because Vanda is there. “I’ve had a pretty good life,”said Vanda.

The Solanco Midget Football Association will host its inaugural “Barbecue and Beer” fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 14. This rainor-shine event will take place at the Osbornia Farm, 74 Clendenin Road., Quarryville, from 5 to 9 p.m. As a nonprofit organization, the mission of the Solanco Midget Football Association is to instruct youths in the skills of football so they can play, have fun, and make friends. One of the association’s top priorities is fundraising for the midget football program. “We care about the kids and the program, so we try our best to keep the cost down for parents,” said Jen Harris, president of the association. At the event, there will be a silent auction featuring
sports memorabilia signed by professional athletes, giveaways, music, a photo booth, and a cornhole tournament. A prize will be given to the winning cornhole team. “This event will be super fun,” stated Harris. “We didn’t get to have a season last year due to COVID, so I look at this like a nice welcome back event.” Ticket purchases will provide attendees with food and beverages from Enck’s Custom Catering. A limited number of tickets are available and must be purchased in advance at https://bit.ly/bbqandbeer. “ We wanted to get the community involved in a fundraising event to support the association,” said association treasurer Brian Robertson. “We’re like a big family and want to keep the program going for another 40 years.” Harris noted that this

at Lancaster Mennonite High School. She is a freelance writer, and her book about Bird-in-Hand, which is subtitled “50 Years of Smucker Family Hospitality, 1968-2018,” delves into the origins and growth of the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant and Hotel and other associated businesses. Hess noted that she hopes the event will change how attendees and viewers see their own stories. “Annual Sto-
rytelling Night helps people recognize the incredible gift of our stories,” she said. “It honors everyday lived experiences of people in our communities.” She added that the event is a step toward the LMHS vision of “a world where people reflect on their own stories and learn to value the stories of others across boundaries.” Readers who would like to know more may visit www.lmhs.org.

Jean Kilheffer Hess, executive director of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), could not help but share a “fun fact” when asked about the organization’s upcoming annual Storytelling Night. “No one knows what the storytellers will say ahead of time,” divulged Hess, who explained that neither the planners of the event nor the storytellers discuss story topics. “Interweaving of stories happens spontaneously,” noted Hess, adding, “Invariably it comes together in a beautiful way.” Storytelling Night, which was first suggested by an LMHS volunteer about 10 years ago, will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. Hess said the format is simple, but carefully prescribed. “The storytellers alternate and each tells a series of four-minute stories,” she explained, adding that the event has proven popular for LMHS. The free presentation will also be livestreamed at www.bit.ly/AMN21. LMHS welcomes donations to support the event’s mission to preserve history through storytelling. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author of “The Bird-in-Hand Story,” were chosen to speak. Hess explained that each was invited because of his or her contributions to Mennonite communities. “Each brings rich life experiences,” she noted. “They have pursued very different professional work, but a common thread is caring for people and meeting their needs.” In addition to his work for MCC, Cruz has had a varied career, which includes being an associate pastor. His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before teaching English and German

HOHC from pg 9
Provided as a community service by this civic minded publication and the Association of Free Community Publications
Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.”
Gap Relief Sale
Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “ W hen a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare
House of His Creation staff (from left) Michelle Gibbs, Matthew Neff, and Callie Neff are ready to welcome clients at their new location in Lititz.
program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12-week experiential programs include guided discussion to
develop knowledge and skills. More information about HOHC may be found at www.hohc.org. Those with specific questions may email mail@hohc.org or call 717626-0263. Readers who have questions about parenting classes may email Michelle@hohc.org or call 347-206-3617.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has announced the appointment of Sara Male as chair of its board of directors. Male stepped into the role previously held by Mary Ellen Davis, who served the LSO as board chair from 2017 and in many capacities before that role. Male has performed in the LSO for 10 years, most recently as acting principal cellist. She also chairs the LSO’s education committee, providing insight and direction for its eight education initiatives. Over the last season, the LSO provided a wide variety of free online concerts and ex panded its educational offerings to include musician interviews and a Link Up concert in partnership with Carnegie Hall. The LSO also launched a new program, StandPartners, which pairs elementary school classrooms with professional musicians to share performances and excite young minds about music. Male noted that the LSO aims to grow its education programs in the future, and it will also meet four music director finalists as guest conductors next season. Male received an Associate of the Arts in Music degree from Victoria Conservatory of Music in Canada, where she won the Principal Emeritus Prize. She earned a Bachelor of Music with high honors from Rutgers University and a Master of Music from the Mannes College of Music in New York City.

Prior to these onstage performances, guests will be invited to enjoy an interactive lesson in fan dance basics in the Lyet Lobby. The work of Hong Dong and other local Asian artists will be featured in the building, and crafting tables will be set up to provide an opportunity for guests of all ages to make paper Chinese lanterns to take home.
