SECA will hold annual golf tournament

The Southern End Community Association (SECA) will hold its 34th annual golf tournament on Friday, Aug. 30, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. The annual fundraiser will include various contests and opportunities to win prizes from local businesses, and proceeds will benefit SECA and the free programs it offers the community.

The game will follow a scramble format, and golfers may register for a set fee per person that will include access to a golf cart, pizza provided by Dolce Vita Pizzeria & Grill and a goodie bag. At 7:30 a.m., participants may sign in and warm up their swinging arms on the practice green until the tournament officially begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. In the event of rain, golfers will receive a voucher for a free round of golf at Tanglewood Manor.

Registration must be completed by Friday, Aug. 16, and the registration form is available online at https://secarec.com/ annualgolfouting.

Participants will have opportunities to win various prizes during the fundraiser, including a hole-in-one contest. The player who hits a hole-in-one on the designated par three will receive a new car from Providence Autos. Other items from local businesses such as gift cards, golf supplies and gift baskets will be available in a giveaway drawing and a Chinese auction.

The annual golf tournament is one of SECA’s largest fundraisers. The money raised by the event helps the organization cover its general operating costs as well as expenses for a variety of programs

and events hosted at its facility on Park Avenue in Quarryville.

SECA’s 15-acre property includes a skatepark, a basketball court, a playground, a skating rink and a swimming pool. SECA also opens its park to host camping trips, practices for local sports teams, exercise groups and educational classes.

Every summer, SECA opens its community pool for recreational swimming, swim meets and youth swimming classes.

The pool remains open until Labor Day weekend, after which the pool is closed and the chemicals are removed from the water. The pool season concludes with the annual Doggie Dip event, during which dog owners are invited to bring their pets for a swim. This year,

the Doggie Dip will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7.

SECA will host its first Country Stampede from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. Community members may purchase tickets at a set price per person to participate in country line dancing at 7 p.m., as well as various games, prize drawings and a bonfire.

“We try to provide different things the community doesn’t have,” said Trevor Marsh, SECA’s director. “There are many things, like our flag football program in the spring, that few other organizations offer in the area. We want to add events that breathe new life into our community.”

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host a free outdoor concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. Members of the community are invited to bring a lawn chair and enjoy refreshments

and fellowship while listening to live music from local band Midst the Noise. The concert is part of LUMC’s Second Friday series of community events.

Complimentary refreshments such as hot dogs and chips will be offered to attendees of the show. Coffee and dessert items will be available to purchase

North Star Initiative (NSI) is doubling down on its mission. The local nonprofit is adding to its resources and increasing its reach in the fight against human trafficking.

“I’ve had a desire for collaboration,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s executive director. “There’s too much work that needs to be done, and you can’t do it alone. We want to bring together skilled and passionate people. There’s so much chance of burnout from doing this restoration work. We

Recently, NSI absorbed Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved (F.R.E.E.), a Berks County-based nonprofit with similar goals, methods and beliefs, into its operations. It’s a move that will allow NSI to impact more survivors and achieve an even greater good.

The Southern End Community Association invites golfers to enjoy a day on the green at its fundraiser.
The show will feature Midst the Noise, a local outfit that includes members of Lampeter United Methodist Church’s praise and worship band.

are stronger together and more effective.”

“This shows that it’s possible for organizations to collaborate to make a difference in the movement,” added Clark. “This is not necessarily common in the nonprofit world. The movement is changing, and it’s a privilege to be on the front lines.”

After about a year of negotiations and red tape, NSI officially absorbed F.R.E.E. on July 1. In the summer of 2023, officials of F.R.E.E. approached NSI about a possible merger, and around the beginning of this year a formal agreement was reached.

“In terms of operations, it’s a merger. The legal term is acquisition,” said Clark. “I’m excited because this means we’re going to be serving more survivors more quickly. It makes the whole organization stronger. This work is complex and complicated. Any resources we have at our disposal are meant for the good of the movement. We want to make the entire

movement more effective.”

NSI retained all 11 of F.R.E.E.’s former employees, a move that increased NSI’s staff to 30 members. In addition to its continuation of F.R.E.E.’s services in Berks County, NSI has now established a physical presence in Reading, partly through the continued operation of F.R.E.E.’s Refuge Home, a residential facility for human trafficking survivors focused on trauma healing, similar to NSI’s The Harbor in Lititz.

NSI now has the capability to house and care for a total of 14 human trafficking survivors at any one time, up to eight at The Harbor in Lititz and up to six at the Refuge Home in Reading.

“This is the next step for F.R.E.E.,” said Andrea McHenry, F.R.E.E.’s former executive director and NSI’s new director of outreach and advocacy. “North Star has experience that will allow the Refuge Home to be the best it can be from the beginning, and I could not be more excited.”

“Over the next 90 days we will be very focused on training staff and analyzing policies so both teams can be effective,” said Clark. “We’re not going to rush things, and if we need to take our time, we will. One of the next key pieces will be to invite the community to see what we’ve accomplished so far. We want better outcomes for survivors. It’s what everyone wants. That’s the whole point.”

NSI is one of at least four Lancaster County organizations currently battling human trafficking. Last year, NSI conducted more than 75 presentations

to raise awareness about human trafficking in the community, and since its founding in 2010, the Lititz nonprofit has provided care for more than 80 survivors.

“I’d say this is unexpected, but desirable and not unimaginable,” said Clark of the F.R.E.E. merger. “The areas that nonprofits struggle in are executive leadership, developing boards and securing volunteers. We have so many resources and such a competent staff that organizations are trying to replicate it.”

Fundraiser motorcycle ride set

The Saddlebag Riders Chapter of the Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries will hold its annual Wounded Warrior Ride on Saturday, Aug. 10. The ride will start and end at Bethany Evangelical Congregational (EC) Church of Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga. Participants are encouraged to arrive early for fellowship, and the ride will begin promptly at 10

a.m. The 89-mile route will take participants through the countryside and past several churches. Attendees may stop to tour the Bangor Episcopal Church, one of the oldest churches in the area. Lunch will be provided at Bethany EC Church following the ride. All funds donated will go directly to wounded veterans. For more information, call Chuck Moore at 717-224-8790.

from Joe on the Go Coffee Co.’s food truck. Although the event will be free, guests are encouraged to register online to help LUMC prepare enough food. To register, visit www.lampeterumc.com/ upcoming-event.

The evening will begin with a short prayer, after which Midst the Noise will perform an arrangement of rock songs and popular hits. The band has performed at several previous Second Friday events at the church, including LUMC’s trivia night and themed bingo activities. Midst the Noise also shares members with LUMC’s praise and worship band, which plays for Sunday services, and the outfit has grown popular among community members after playing at local fundraisers and First Friday events in downtown Lancaster. “They were such a big hit during trivia, but they didn’t have time to play full sets between rounds,” said Zachary Frantz of LUMC. “We wanted to bring them back, and it’s a great band we knew our community would enjoy.”

LUMC held its first event in the Second Friday Series in January 2024. The goal of creating the series was to offer a free, family event to residents of communities in the Southern End once a month. Since January, the series has included a board game night, movie screenings and games such as trivia and bingo. In July, Second Friday attendees painted

ornaments for residents of local retirement homes as part of LUMC’s Christmas in July activities.

“(The Second Friday Series) is something we had been thinking about doing for a while,” Frantz said. “It’s about creating interactions between our church family and people in the community. There’s always devotionals and things for people to take home, and members of the congregation are always present to answer questions, but we give space for people to just come do something different.” Frantz added that the series is loosely based on the First Friday series downtown, but it offers an alternative for local residents who may not

have access to transportation into the city. In addition to the free community events, LUMC offers various programs and activities through its ministries. The church hosts a free community meal on the first Wednesday of every month, and its members participate in the Soup Angels program to combat food insecurity in Lancaster city.

protein,

Together, parents and children can build a balanced lunch, making sure children have one item from each of the five food groups. Ideas for a balanced lunchbox include English muffins, sliced ham, carrots, strawberries, a cheese stick, wheat crackers, hummus, sugar snap peas, clementines and nonfat Greek yogurt.

Second, lunches should contain protein. Protein helps keep stomachs full and minds focused. When thinking about breakfast, lunch and snacks, include quick and easy foods like lunch meat, cheese, nut butters,

Greek yogurt or hard-boiled eggs.

The third tip is to get colorful. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients. Entice kids with daily color challenges to encourage produce variety. For example, Monday’s lunch can focus on red foods, Tuesday’s meal can feature orange foods, and so on.

Fourth, parents should stock convenience items. Be prepared with pre-sliced apple packs, granola bars, applesauce pouches and trail mixes available for graband-go after-school snacks, and load up on frozen waffles and pancakes, fruit cups, oatmeal pouches and drinkable yogurts for easy breakfasts. The fifth tip is to make

dinner easy. Balanced dinners do not have to be elaborate. Keep it simple on busy weeknights with tried-andtrue winners like breakfast for dinner or sandwiches with no-cook sides.

Camp offers exploration of STEM

The Solanco Summer STEM Camp was held recently, drawing elementary and middle school students from various schools, including from Solanco School District, surrounding districts, private schools, and home-

schooling programs.

Campers immersed themselves in activities like videography, robotics, manufacturing, and game design. Each day, they explored different aspects of STEM, learning to collaborate and develop their

computational thinking skills. Activities included designing, capturing, editing, coding, debugging, and creating a variety of innovative projects.

The camp was designed and led by Solanco technology education teachers Pat Thomas, Tony Mendez, and Todd Brown, alongside business education teacher Josh Flemming. They planned the camp over the past school year. Several high school students volunteered their time to assist the campers, serving as mentors to them.

The camp’s goal was to expose young students to the opportunities available within Solanco School District’s STEM programs, to spark their interest in STEM careers, and to equip them with computational thinking skills that may benefit them in any future career.

Promise Players announce auditions

The Promise Players will hold auditions for the group’s fall performance, “Baggage Claim,” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m.

“Baggage Claim” tells the story of the D’Baquel family’s vacation, where things are anything but relaxing. The lodge is full of animated goofballs, and the bellhop keeps tossing their luggage into the canyon. A comedic beginning turns into a darker reality as audiences see the family’s inner conflicts.

Roles are available for five men, five women, and additional flex roles. To schedule an audition or for more information, contact director Dorothy Smith at musicditdot@hotmail.com and note “Promise Players Auditions” in the subject line.

Performances will be held from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 7 to 10, and from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 14 to 17.

Church sets Peach Fest

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, will host a Peach Fest on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. The church will provide a light meal, including beef barbecue, hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, and beverages. Peach desserts will be available.

There is no fee for the event. Donations will be received to help cover the cost of the meal.
