Take A Walk In The Gnome Countryside BY COURTNEY MENGEL
“I would say the two biggest blessings in my life have been my house burning down and diabetes,” wrote Kirkwood resident Richard Humpfreys. “That may seem like a strange thing to say, but one thing I have learned is that so much of life depends upon your attitude.” Ever since he was 14 years old, Humpfreys has lived with Type 1 diabetes, but this disease has never held him back from pursuing his dreams and doing what makes him happy. Humpfreys applied to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1961 and, while enrolled, went on a two-monthlong road trip to the West Coast. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in education from MICA in 1965, and two years later, he found himself working as a middle
school art teacher in Quarryville. After getting married in June 1967 and securing teaching jobs, Humpfreys and his then-wife, Mary Lou Crittenden, moved to Alaska for a year, and after the school year ended, they decided to travel around Europe. After their trip, they were ready to return to Lancaster County and settle into their new lives in Kirkwood. A side effect of diabetes is eye hemorrhaging, and by 1980, both of Humpfreys’ eyes had hemorrhaged. Although he received laser treatment, which stabilized his vision for a few years, Humpfreys knew that his vision problems would negatively impact his teaching career. While thinking of other ways to make a living, Humpfreys remembered stories and traditions he heard from indigenous people in Denmark and Iceland about little See Gnome Countryside pg 6
A Climb To Remember BY COURTNEY MENGEL
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of

Steve will help people understand what motivates horses, how horses can be therapeutic, and most importantly, how to use horse training to become a happier and better person. “My biggest dream is for people to participate in our clinics and become inspired to
make a program like ours,” stated Steve. “We want more programs like ours in more parts of the country so people can understand themselves and horses better.” For mor information or to purchase tickets for the clinic, visit www.noblehillrescue.org, call 717-203-9785, or email msindianhorses@aol.com. When Steve Edwards puts on a suit and a tie, he works as a prosecutor in Smithfield, Va., but when he puts on a pair of boots and blue jeans, he raises mustangs and hosts horse training sessions at Mill Swamp Indian Horses. There was never a time in his life when Steve wasn’t interested in horses. He got his first pony at the age of 2 and has been riding for the past 59 years. For 20 of those years, Steve has taught natural horsemanship and has prosecuted assault crimes. According to Steve, understanding human trauma responses allows people to understand horse behaviors and learn how to train the horse in accordance with its nature. “The techniques we use in talking with traumatized indi-
viduals to give them more confidence are precisely the same techniques we use with horses, specifically wild horses,” explained Steve. “During my 20 years of prosecuting, I’ve only had one child who was unable to testify in court, and that really shows how these techniques can help people understand and communicate with other people.” Steve has written several articles on natural horsemanship and recently published his first book, “And a Little Child Shall Lead Them: Learning From Wild Horses and Small Children.” Steve and his wife, Beth, have three daughters and five grandchildren. On Saturday, Sept. 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Steve will visit Pennsylvania to host a Mill Swamp Indian Horses Round Pen Clinic at 132 Hollow Road, Quarryville. The clinic is spon-

When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel, was 2 years old, she received speech-language therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten. “Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Schreiber Center will host its

people who dwell in the woods. Humpfreys thought of the little people as gnomes, so he decided he would create a nature trail on his property, where he would tell stories and look for gnomes with children. This was how Gnome Countryside was born. “When children visit Gnome Countryside, I greet them in my gnome outfit: lederhosen, hiking boots, a red gnome hat, and big oversized sunglasses,” said Humpfreys. “The children always laugh at my outfit. I love to hear children laughing.” Each visit starts with an introduction in the Gnomery, where Humpfreys shows children gnome artifacts and talks about the lore of the little people. Horst Excavating, founded by brothers Abram Horst Jr. and Clyde Horst, is celebrating 60 years in business this year. From its beginnings in 1961 as a small site work company originally called A&C Equipment, Horst Excavating has grown to become an award-winning site work contractor whose work spans the MidAtlantic region. Horst Excavating now employs more than 70 team members, many of whom have been with the company for at least a decade and a few of whom have been Horst team members for over a quarter century. W hether working as a prime contractor directly for a client or in conjunction with a general contractor as a subcontractor, Horst has performed the site work on several significant projects in the area over the past 50 years. These include the Barnestormers’ stadium, the Lancaster County Convention Center and the wasteto-energy facility in York known as the York County Resource Recovery Center.

will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required because there will be sameday registration. To preregister, visit https://lancaster stairclimb.org/registration. Spectators are welcome. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters

day, Sept. 15, shoe donations can be dropped off various locations in the Oxford and Quarryville areas. “The shoes can be in gently used condition, but the soles cannot be falling off,” explained Nancy Rowe, who is troop co-leader for Girl Scout Troops 71227 and 71244 along with Jayne Zook. Both troops meet at Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood. All donated shoes will be given to Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit organization that repurposes the footwear According to www.funds2orgs.com, the shoes are sold to microentrepreneurs for a nominal cost. Microentrepreneurs then mark up the shoes and sell them in their local communities for a fraction of the original price, but still for a profit. “(The Jamboree) is open to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, which is what Scouting is called (in other countries),” noted Rowe. The Jamboree will be held from Aug. 6 through Aug. 13, 2022. In addition, the troops are planning a five-day trip to Ireland before traveling to the Jamboree. “My daughter went to (the Jamboree) and I took a Scout group there three years ago. It’s a great opportunity to meets kids from around the world,” said Rowe. “The girls learned that no matter where you are from, people are the same and want the same kinds of things. It gives them an opportunity to see that the world is not as big as they think. We are all interconnected somehow.” While attending the Jamboree, the girls will camp out in tents, provided by their sister troop in England. “They make sure that while we are in camp that we have everything that we need,” said Rowe. She shared that a special camaraderie developed between the girls from Pennsylvania and the troop from England during the previous visit. “No one knew each other when we got there, but when we left, they walked the kids to our shuttle and there were tears - (after only) one week,” Rowe said, noting that some of the girls still keep in touch with their new friends. Locations in Oxford where shoes may be dropped off include Ware Presbyterian Village, 7 E. Locust St.; Oxford Church of the Nazarene, 116 E. Locust St.; and Oxford

Girls met construction professionals and learned beginner trade skills at the All ‘bout Construction Girls Camp.
During the week of June 14 to 18, 12 female students from Lancaster County attended a weeklong summer camp at ABC Keystone’s training facility in Manheim. The chapter’s inaugural All ‘bout Construction (ABC) Girls Camp, funded through a grant by the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, provided the students with the opportunity to meet with female construction industry leaders, visit job sites of local contractors and learn beginner trade skills. During the week, the campers used the knowledge and training they gained to create their own steampunk-themed, lighted charging station. Over the course of the camp, attendees worked together as a team while discovering the career opportunities that the construction industry provides. They were taught basic safety skills, blueprint reading, electrical

Make-A-Wish Announces Fundraising Total The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driver will be
invited to throw out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers. In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale of a replica 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe built in-house, as well as the tools used to build the car. “Squish Squad” Combats Spotted Lanterflies The Student Leadership Council (SLC), a program of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), has launched the Squish Squad, joining efforts throughout Pennsylvania to contain and eradicate the invasive spotted lanternfly. A total of 34 counties in the
commonwealth are under quarantine by the state Department of Agriculture. Residents and businesses are encouraged to learn how to stop the spread of the insect, which damages trees, vines, and other plants and which poses a threat to agriculture.
The Squish Squad is using the three-pronged approach of advocacy, awareness, and action in its campaign against the spotted lanternfly. The effort by high school students complements a variety of approaches already in place throughout the commonwealth
that are designed to eradicate the pests, which first showed up in Pennsylvania in 2014. On the Squish Squad’s first educational and scouting trip earlier this summer in Lancaster County, students found a few spotted lanternflies in their black and white-spotted nymph

Railroad Museum To Host Scenic Train Ride The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a daylong Ramble to the East Broad Top Railroad on Sunday, Sept. 12. The event will begin in Orbisonia, where guests will board a restored, diesel-powered East Broad Top Railroad train. Passengers will travel through the Aughwick Valley and lunch at an on-site café. They will then tour the East Broad Top Railroad’s restoration, where they will be able to see the stationary steam engine that powers the shop machinery as well as the ongoing work on two of the railroad’s Baldwin steam locomotives and passenger cars. In the afternoon, passengers will ride aboard one of the Rockhill Trolley’s vintage electric streetcars alongside the Blacklog Creek. There will also be free time for viewing the vintage tractors and steam traction engines at the Antique Traction Show. Separate fees will apply to members and nonmembers of the Friends of the Railroad Museum. The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 20. Spaces are limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
