Solanco Marching Band To Present “Heart” The 2019 Solanco High School Black and Gold Marching Band is aiming to provide entertaining and exciting football field shows and marching band showcases this season. The show, titled “Heart,” will be presented in three movements: “Heart Rate,” “Heartbreak,” and “Heartbeat.” “The show will feature the music of composer Randall Standridge,” Solanco High School band director Scott Weyman said. “‘Heart Rate’ is an energetic show opener that represents the first stages of life from the detection of the initial heartbeat through the boundless energy of youth,” Weyman said. “‘Heartbreak’ is a contemporary ballad that represents the devastation of pain and disappointment, but is actually lush and beautiful at the same time. ‘Heartbeat’ is the forceful and triumphant closer - delivered with even more energy

than the opener - that portrays the resilience of the human spirit.” According to Weyman, Standridge has been successful in the world of symphonic band. “Our students have mastered a few of his original works for concert band, and I have found his compositions to be as challenging as they are exciting. The kids have very much taken to his work,” Weyman noted. “When I discovered his love of composing for the marching band, it was clear that his compositions would be a great vehicle for us to inspire and motivate our students. I also believe that our audiences both at football games and at marching band showcases will find this show to be highly engaging, expressive, and memorable.” “Heart” will debut on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the football field at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. MoneyMakers Club Promotes Investment Education By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Dividends, NYSE, NASDAQ, growth stock, day trading - for some folks, these words are as incomprehensible as thermonuclear astrophysics. The members of the MoneyMakers Investment Club, however, are committed to

working together to demystify the stock market and the process of investing in stocks. “The purpose of the club is mostly education, to get comfortable with basics and concepts of investing and have a little fun while we’re doing it,” explained senior partner Chris Milsom. “ We were spurred on by the Beardstown Ladies club,” she added, referencing “The Beardstown Ladies’ Common-Sense Investment Guide: How We Beat See MoneyMakers Club pg 7

Driving Forward HVMI Schedules Golf Outing By Ann Mead Ash

Kyle Robinson, executive director of Handi*Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), has a lot on his plate. Not too long ago, the ministry purchased the land at 3261 Rothsville

Road, Akron, and work to receive approvals to locate camps, retreat centers, and day programs there is underway, with HVMI planning a capital fund campaign to begin in the fall. With all that looming, Robinson is well aware of the importance of maintaining the general budget. “Our golf outing is driving programs that are See Golf Outing pg 4

Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian cofounded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a read-aloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculumbased garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines

fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclassroom.org/5k -registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedible classroom.org.

happening now,” explained Robinson. “Our general fund should be strong as we go into our capital campaign. We need to appropriately handle all the things God has given us.” HVMI will hold its 17th annual golf outing at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Contests will include a hole-in-one competition, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, straightest drive, and a putting competition. Registration and light fare will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow the round. HVMI offers recreational camps and more to people with disabilities and also includes Minds Renewed, BASIS, and REST Ministries. Plans for the land include a camp featuring a chapel/dining hall, a cabin, a pavilion, and more. Recreational features that HVMI hopes to add will include a pool, a playground, a basketball court, and playing fields with ADA-compliant paved walking paths. Currently, the ministry rents two camps to offer seven weeks of camping per summer. One camp is located in Malaga, N.J., and a second is at Camp Sankanac near Pottstown. Having its own property will mean that HVMI can hold 10 weeks of camp each summer. “Our goals are to centralize (camping) at the Akron property,” said Robinson, who added that workshops to help local individuals and churches learn the best ways to welcome people with disabilities into their organizations are also planned for the location. Robinson would also like to see the location offer retreat opportunities to bereaved parents who take part in BASIS and parents of children with disabilities, who could receive respite services. According to Robinson, the work required to obtain land development approval for the site is well underway. “We are moving forward with the review process,” said Robinson. “It would be great to break ground this year,” he noted, adding that the process will begin with moving earth around. “A lot of things need to happen on the land,” he said. “Once we have the approval, things can move fast.” The capital campaign that will be necessary to fund the new location is forthcoming as well. “We want to know the exact costs (before launching the campaign),” explained Robinson. “Hopefully by the end of summer, (we will launch).” Individuals interested in taking part in the golf outing are encouraged to preregister by Thursday, Sept. 5. Readers may register at www.hvmi.org. Questions may be directed to swilson@hvmi.org or 717-859-4777.

Rutt, founder of HOPE International, prefers to talk about the people the organization has helped. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about guys like Nico,” said Rutt, referring to a rice farmer Rutt met in the Philippines during late 2018 and early 2019. Nico, who lives on the island of Tacloban, has a dream of sending his sons to college. When his fishing business was wiped out in a 2013 typhoon that hit Tacloban and killed 7,000, Nico learned how to grow rice. “(Nico) got involved in a HOPE International savings group there, (participating in a) welcome, worship, Word, work, and wrap up group program,” explained Rutt. “He is just thriving.” Rutt asked Nico if he had advice for other farmers. “He said three things: ‘Trust God, work hard, and save,’” recalled Rutt. The MoneyMakers have done so well lately that the club anticipates receiving an award from the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of BetterInvesting. The chapter serves individual and investment club members of BetterInvesting by providing educational investing workshops, model investment club meetings, and other events for stock investors of all skill levels. BetterInvesting is a nonprofit organization that was founded as the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) in 1951. The mission of BetterInvesting is to provide sound investment information, education, and support that helps to create successful lifetime investors. the Stock Market - And How You Can Too,” which was published in 1995. “Widows, finding themselves in charge of their financial future, formed an investment club, and they did so well that they spawned this whole movement of women’s investment clubs,” Milsom continued. Membership in the MoneyMakers Investment Club is not restricted to women only. While an audit eventually showed that the Beardstown Ladies’ investments were not performing as well as initially advertised, the principle remained the same: Laypeople could teach themselves how to invest and manage stocks wisely. In 1997, Milsom was part of the creation of Bring Your Own Chair (BYOC), an investment group that met in different places, so attendees were encouraged to provide their own seats. BYOC merged with the MoneyMakers group in 2003 and opted to keep that name. The MoneyMakers group meets on the second Wednesday of almost every month at 7 p.m. at the Lancaster Friends Meetinghouse, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. The club usually does not meet in July, and the December meeting is a social event held at a local restaurant. During each meeting, club members discuss the group’s current portfolio and consider other stocks. Each

1 GEORGE’S COUPON OFFER Per Visit

“Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s afford-

able,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel .com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A

Tournament from pg 6 tournament can comfortably accommodate a total of 230 golfers. Boycan explained that HOPE will reach even more countries by entering a partnership with Compassion International to train representatives in savings group programs. This year, HOPE will train Compassion staff members in Rwanda, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, and Tanzania. “We want to make a big difference. We want to collaborate for the kingdom,” explained Boycan. Rutt noted that it is important to train those who are indigenous to an area to oversee savings groups. He shared the story of Rosalie, a woman in the Philippines who was asked by a HOPE representative about her dreams. “She said she would love a house, but it is too big a dream,” relayed Rutt. “The indigenous leader, Florine, talked to her about big dreams and small steps toward them.” Rutt explained that the leader can relate to those in the groups in a realistic way. “(Rosalie’s) group leader can say, ‘I grew up here, and I know what you’re going through,’” explained Rutt. Boycan noted that it is the design of the savings groups to give people a way to lift themselves from poverty. “The microfinancing and savings groups restore dignity and help break the cycle of poverty,” said Boycan. “People feel terrible when they are unable to take care of their families, (but) you see their dignity restored when they realize, ‘I am capable. God has given me the gifts that I need, and I can (take care of my family).’” Last year, HOPE exceeded its goal of raising $350,000 from the tournament. Much of the money raised by the tournament is donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. One package includes a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic for 12 participants. Currently, the 2019 tournament has raised more than $200,000. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hope international.org/take-action/event -detail/19th-annual-golf-tournament. Those who wish to play are asked to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who have questions may call 717-464-3220, ext. 456, or email bbeachy@hopeinternational.org. Pictured on front: Jeff Rutt (left), founder of HOPE International, stands with Nico, a rice farmer in the Philippines who was able to change his circumstances based on what he learned from a HOPE International savings group. Savings groups are funded by activities like HOPE’s annual golf outing, which will be held at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York on Sept. 13.

Art from pg 8 donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

All are invited, and admission will be free. Band rehearsal will begin at 6 p.m., with the Solanco Music Booster meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. The public debut of “Heart” will start at 7:30 p.m. “This is a great opportunity for all band parents to gather to learn more about our music booster organization and to get involved in supporting the marching band. Selection Guide is invaluable, Milsom and Bruce agreed. The organization also offers conferences and webinars, and www.better investing.org hosts a wealth of resources used by the MoneyMakers to manage the group’s portfolio. There is a fee to join the MoneyMakers, and members contribute an amount of money at each meeting to purchase stocks. Dividends are reinvested, or they are used to pay for the cost of accessing BetterInvesting’s online resources. “Because I’m in this club, I was brave enough to go out and buy my own stocks,” Bruce commented. “Even if you use a stockbroker, it’s good to have some knowledge of what’s going on.” The next meeting of the MoneyMakers will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Interested individuals are welcome to attend. Milsom requested that readers send an email to moneymakers.investmentclub@ gmail.com to let the club know they plan to attend.
