Fig Tree grant winners announced
Fig Industries recently announced the recipients of the 2024 Fig Tree grants. The grants represent more than just financial support; they symbolize the company’s commitment to nurturing Lancaster city’s small businesses and entrepreneurs.
In collaboration with the Lancaster County Community Foundation, Fig Industries established The Fig Tree in 2023. Thanks to additional support from
local businesses and individuals, this year’s grant cycle had $35,000 available for distribution. Through a grant to Lancaster City Alliance, local businesses received $5,000 each to support growth and innovative new ideas.
The Fig Tree 2024 grant recipients are EsōArts, INGOMA Films, Lancaster Gift Box, PAVAA Gallery, Pham Enterprises, Pocket Books Shop and RichStitch Embroidery.
Grant recipients were chosen by an independent advisory committee composed of seven individuals from across the community. Members of the committee reviewed and scored the responses of all applicants based on their ideas.
Local businesses that invested in The Fig Tree for its first year along with Fig Industries are Work Wisdom, Cargas, and Trout CPA. Several local individuals also contributed.
The next Fig Tree grant cycle will open in March 2025. Find more information and support The Fig Tree at www.lancfound.org/ fund/the-fig-tree.

self-injury throughout local communities and to raise awareness of mental health issues.
Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in various breakout sessions during the conference, and each session will offer information on a specific topic. The sessions will feature discussions on how to use mindfulness to improve student executive functioning, the latest research on suicide prevention and various other mental health-related subjects.
Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster County. “Like our program manager Dave Krahling says, everyone is on the front lines of suicide prevention.”

In addition to the keynote address and breakout sessions, the conference will feature Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training. QPR functions as the mental health equivalent of CPR, and it serves as a tool to help identify when someone may be struggling with mental health or suicidal thoughts.
“Coming to this event will equip people with a lot of information, and it’s a great opportunity for people who want to become more involved with suicide prevention efforts,” said
The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition has hosted the annual conference for several years, and the schedule has been modified this year to feature more breakout sessions and information about suicide prevention strategies. “Our main goal is to bring stakeholders, educators, consumers and other community members together to gain skills and share the goal of preventing suicides,” McDevitt said.
MHA of Lancaster County has several initiatives that aim to decrease suicide rates in the area, including an upcoming campaign to raise awareness of gun safety. The organization also has several programs slated for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month.

Club enjoys food, field trip,
The members of the Solanco 4-H Community Club took part in a variety of activities in recent months.
The club’s monthly meeting in April, held at Solanco High School, focused on food activities. The club broke into two groups, which visited stations where they made energy bites and ice cream in a bag. The decision to focus on
food activities was made in memory of Daniel Beiler, a Solanco 4-H Community Club member who loved cooking and food.
The May meeting was a field trip to Gnome Countryside, where attendees walked in the woods to experience nature and learn about trees, other plants, and more. They also played games and made fairy gardens.
The June meeting, held at New Danville Mennonite Church, had a service focus. 4-H members visited stations where they could make cards for people in a nursing home, help make signs for a 4-H bake sale, and design scrapbook pages for a club scrapbook.
A club showcase took place in July, and members brought their completed projects to Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church’s Family Life Center. While club leaders judged proj -
ects, members enjoyed snacks and games. Every project received a ribbon according to its merit.
In August, the club officers delivered cards and flowers to residents at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Club members had raised the money for the flowers by holding a bake sale at Tractor Supply earlier in the year.
Anyone interested in participating in 4-H in 2025 may contact the county 4-H office at 717-394-6851.

The scholarships will be split evenly into $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who have also achieved the Student/Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (ST/CHMM) designation and $16,000 for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate education in approved schools and who also have the Student/Associate Safety and Health Manager (ST/ ASHM) designation.

GriefShare
evening meetings. For the last 20 years, the program has exclusively held evening sessions.
The GriefShare program seeks to offer resources and support as those experiencing the loss of a loved one navigate the mourning process. The program’s weekly meetings also allow participants to meet others who have experienced similar challenges coping with grief. In the past, GriefShare sessions have drawn attendees from various parts of the Southern End, including the Millersville, Quarryville and Willow Street communities and adjacent areas.
Each session will incorporate informational material that is centered around scriptural teachings and Christian themes, including educational videos on various topics related to grief
and mourning. In 2023, GriefShare updated its latest edition to highlight topics such as suicide, isolation and anxiety, as well as difficulties directly related to the coronavirus pandemic and its residual effects on members of the community. The latest edition also shortened the length of its informational videos to allow participants to have more time to discuss their experiences.
“A lot of people told me they appreciate the new video topics and longer sharing times. I think it helps with the unpredictability of grief,” said Trina Barr, who will facilitate the program along with Dave Perry and Sherry Mull.
The three community members have found support through the program after experiencing a personal loss. Barr introduced
SINGING SPRING FOODS
the program to Pequea Church more than 20 years ago after joining a grief support group in Quarryville via Hospice & Community Care. Barr had recently experienced the loss of her younger brother, and she was inspired to start the program to share her positive experience participating in the support group.
“(Perry, Mull and I) have all experienced loss. We have a heart for it because we’ve been through it,” Barr said. “When my brother died, there weren’t many places to go. Now there are a lot more groups, but many people like this program because it incorporates biblical teaching.”
For more information or to register for GriefShare, call the church office at 717872-5579 or email Barr at jebarr@frontier.com.

Pet walk and fundraiser planned
ClassONE Property Restoration will hold a “Save Our Pets” Project pet walk and fundraiser event on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail in Manheim. The event will include a pet walk, vendors offering pet-related products and services, a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses, a selection of food trucks, a pet photo shoot and caricature drawings and a fire truck display.
Admission to the firsttime event is free, and people of all ages are welcome, with or without pets. Those who are participating in the pet walk must register in advance and will be asked to pay a fee per pet. Each registered pet walker will receive goodie bag that
includes an event T-shirt as well as a bandana for his or her pet.
The goal of the walk is to raise funds to provide local fire departments and other emergency responders with pet oxygen mask kits, ensuring they can swiftly assist pets that are rescued from burning homes. The event will also support other pet emergency services, such as funding the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART) and ClassONE’s Paw Grants. These grants help cover adoption-related fees for families looking to adopt a pet after losing their own in a fire.
To learn more and register for the walk, visit www.facebook.com/class onepropertyrestoration or www.classoneresto ration.com.
Webinar series to explore stream repair
A Backyard Stream Repair Series of live webinars will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 27 to Sept. 10, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Each session will present a step-by-step DIY process that homeowners and landowners can use to repair streams that are getting deeper or wider. The techniques are meant to be simple and affordable. Penn State Extension noted that stream repair can lead to improved bank stability and reduced
erosion, saving property from washing away; added property value; reduced water pollution; available habitat for many types of wildlife; and other benefits.
There is a fee, and registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ BackyardStreamRepair. A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants after the live event, and the recording will be accessible for six months from the event date.

veterinary services and the resin crafts will benefit the participating nonprofits. The participating nonprofits serve all of Lancaster County and the surrounding area, but two organizations, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow, are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a Millersville-based organization that specializes in the rehabilitation of squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and other small woodland creatures. Woerth It Hollow, based in Kirkwood, operates a facility to offer equine therapy services to veterans and people with disabilities in addition to rehabilitating rescued horses. Other participating organizations include Leo’s Helping Paws and Honey’s RAID, which seek to raise awareness of puppy mills, dog fighting and other forms of animal abuse. The groups also raise funds for medical grants for animals that have been abused or abandoned. Other participating rescues will include Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie’s Stray Foundation, LaMancha Animal Rescue and Wagon Tails Farm Rescue.

“This is my favorite event of the year, and it helps so many organizations,” said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. “Right now is a crucial time for rescues because of weather-related incidents like storms and extreme heat, so many fosters and rescues are full.” Helm, who owns rescued dogs herself, created the annual fundraiser four years ago due to her love for animals and passion for animal advocacy. Helm uses Whiskers, Wags and Wine as a way to help local organizations raise awareness of specific issues, as well as collect items that rescues need. Britain Hill will accept donations of items from a wish list on its Facebook page. The list was created by the organizations participating in the event, and it includes items such as new and gently used pet toys, canned and dry pet food, harnesses, horse halters, antibacterial wipes and trash bags. Donors may leave items in the driveway of the vineyard up to and including the day of the event.
