Inaugural 5K To Support Clinic For Special Children Tucked among the farmlands a few miles from Strasburg’s town center is one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. Here, at the Clinic for Special Children, groundbreaking testing and research for disease-causing mutations are conducted daily. Timing is critical in preventing or limiting damage to the brain or body. Through advancements in diagnosing rare genetic diseases, therapy can start within hours of a baby’s birth. “What makes us different from a commercial or hospital laboratory is that we perform very efficient, specialized testing,” explained laboratory technician Ashlin Rodrigues. “For example, I recently received a whole blood sample around 9 a.m. and ran a genetic test to determine if the newborn had SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) since the disease ran in the family. It was completed
by 11 a.m. Commercial labs may take up to 21 days to run the same test.” Under the laboratory direction of Dr. Erik Puffenberger, the small clinic has identified more than 260 different gene mutations, which enables molecular diagnosis and therapy to begin the day a baby is born. While rare diseases are found within communities throughout the world, some disorders are predominant among the Old Order Amish and Mennonite (Plain) communities due to a genetic “founder effect” since their populations have remained reproductively isolated over many generations. Samples for lab testing come from these communities as far away as Indiana, Wisconsin, and New York as well as outside Plain communities from around the world, including Europe and Brazil. In 1989, the clinic opened its current location at 535 Bunker Hill See Clinic For Special Children pg 5

Cyclists line up to begin the 2017 Bike Millersville event. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Sept. 15, beginning at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center at Millersville University. By Ann Mead Ash
Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have
changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the See Bike Millersville pg 2

Participant Jonathan Shenk said that he first got involved in NLAM after hearing a presentation at West End Mennonite Fellowship. “I found their mission compelling and decided to begin supporting the organization,” said Shenk, who discussed his interest in cycling with an NLAM representative. “One thing led to another, and I ended up riding in the event last year and … contributing some ideas for growing the event in coming years.”

case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops,” explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strength-
sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile,” explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have committed to walk in the event. “We are

It is the third year the Lancaster County Agriculture Council has teamed up with the Barnstormers to organize the Farm Show, which took place from June 22 to 24. Farmers, agriculture business owners and employees, and 4-H and FFA students were among the 15,000 who attended the three-day event. Outside of the stadium, modern and antique tractors and other machinery were on display for attendees to check out. On June 23, live farm animals took over the outfield, including cows, sheep, pigs, alpacas and rabbits. Agriculture-themed games were highlighted in between innings, such as alpaca races. For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faithbased rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and postrelease prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery Center, which will include a 30- to 90-day intensive program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the groundbreaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a
repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord, said Hoover. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day. Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted

in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,â€? he said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,â€? he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. ‌ There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.â€? Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with opioid addiction, and we are trying to do things legislatively,â€? said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.â€? Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a secluded place (to pray),â€? he said. “For all those who struggle with
addictions, there is hope. As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a curriculum, said Mwangi. “We are trusting God for a divine power to change every life that steps on this property, (where) the name of Jesus will be honored as lives are changed. Following the dedication, five clients of TTC/Potter’s House gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river adjacent to the property. Volunteers Raise Funds For Off The Streets
AMPRA Sets Pig Roast
A group of volunteers recently raised $57,000 for Off the Streets. Volunteers for Off the Streets work to help neighbors in Lancaster communities move out of temporary living arrangements, such as hotels and shelters, and into permanent housing. At an April luncheon at Lancaster Country Club called Our Thing in Spring, the committee garnered sponsorships, cash donations, in-kind gifts and auction items to raise the funds. Proceeds will go directly to helping men, women and children pay their security deposit and first month’s rent so they may move into homes. Since 2013, Off the Streets has helped more than 1,500 people, 80 percent of whom are women and children. The organization works through the United Way to garner referrals; clients must be financially able to sustain rent payments. In addition to assisting with security deposits, Off the Streets provides home furnishings and meets basic living needs to get individuals and families started. The organization especially needs volunteers to help with moves. Founded by Michael Oles, a church deacon, Off the Streets began in Danbury, Conn., in 2009. Since 2013, it has been operating in Lancaster; Bridgeport, Conn.; and Huntington Beach, Calif. It is a nonprofit organization that has no paid staff and receives no government money. For more information, readers may visit www.offthestreet snow.com/lancaster or www.face book.com/offthestreetslancaster/.
All former employees of AMP Incorporated and/or its successors, including Tyco Electronics and TE Connectivity, along with their spouses or other adult guests, are invited to attend the 26th annual pig roast sponsored by the AMP Retirees Association (AMPRA). The pig roast will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Enola Sportsman’s Association, 290 Pine Hill Road Extended, Enola, just off Route 944 (Wertzville Road). Registration and a social time will begin at 10

Pathways Institute Kicks Off Fall Term
Y& A D ’ N I S I U R C ICNIC P Y T I N U M COM
Cruise to C.R. Lapp’s for an afternoon of fun, fellowship & great food!
The fall term of the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning at Landis Homes began with a kickoff reception on July 24 at Calvary Church. More than 200 persons participated in the event, which also included celebrating the 10th anniversary of the program with teachers and students. The celebration included remarks from founders Lenora Stern, who helped start the original program at Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg in 2006, and Connie Stauffer, who was instrumental in bringing the Lancaster program to Landis Homes in 2008.
During the celebration, Stern and Stauffer were recognized for their work. Following the opening remarks, a new video featuring current participants and board members was shown for the first time. The video, “Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning: 10th Anniversary,” is the creation of a fatherand-son team, Roger and David Godin, who conducted the interviews and edited the final version. After the video was shown, the class instructors were introduced and the course titles were announced. The courses and events, which
are scheduled to occur from September to December, are open to all Lancaster County residents, as well as residents from neighboring counties, who are age 55 or above. Some of the new classes include Understanding the Opioid Crisis, Native American Spirituals, Trolleys of Lancaster County, Medicare 101, Four Masterpieces of 20thCentury Short Story, Products From the Hive, and Living Younger, Longer. The registration fee includes enrollment in up to eight courses per semester, as well as a per-course
option. Pathways Institute will also offer day trips, including a trip to the Museum of the American Revolution and an opportunity to see the eagles at Conowingo Dam, as well as special events. Most classes are held on the Landis Homes campus, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. For more information, readers may call 717381-3577 or email pathway inquiry@thepathwaysinstitute.org . The new Pathways Institute catalogs and the online registration forms are available at www. thepathwaysinstitute.org.
