New scholarship established in honor of Waggoner

The Solanco Cross-Country and Track and Field Alumni Association, created in 2014 by a group of alumni and former coaches, continues to work to promote past, present and future success of the cross-country and track and field programs. The association carries out activities each year to assist current studentathletes involved with both sports. Some alumni donations, $200 to $300 each year, go directly to providing training shoes or clothing for athletes in need, and support specialized track camps as well.

Joy, PA 17552 or submit by email to news@engleonline.com circulation@engleonline.com

The association’s largest effort is the generation of funds for scholarships awarded each May to student-athletes. The Coach Art Harrington Cross-Country and Track and Field Scholarship, established in 1999, has been awarded to more than 42 students. The Coach Lee Rhodes Cross-Country Scholarship was established in 2017 and has been awarded seven times. New for 2024 is a third scholarship, named after coach John Waggoner.

“The alumni association has

raised about $40,000 over 24 years,” said former head coach Craig Ausel, a board member for the association. “Last year, we gave two $2,500 scholarships. Emma Baxter received the Art Harrington Scholarship, and Anthony SolisMorales was awarded the Coach Lee Rhoades Scholarship. And, thanks to a generous donation by former crosscountry and track standout Tom Funk, we are introducing the Coach John Waggoner Scholarship. We have extremely generous alumni, (whose support) we hope continues to grow. We appreciate their support.”

The association also generates scholarship funds from sponsorship signs displayed at cross-country and track meets. “The signs have helped tremendously,” said Ausel. “Alumni, family and friends purchase signs and dedicate them to former teams, family members and/or coaches. Some businesses also support the scholarship.”

In addition to the scholarship sign donation drive, held throughout the year, the association promotes the

Cross-Country Alumni

Reunion, to be held this year at a home cross-country meet on Tuesday, Oct. 3; the Track and Field Alumni Reunion, to be held in 2024; and the One-Hour Distance Challenge, also to be held in 2024.

The organization has a website and Facebook page that share news and information regarding all events. “We encourage alumni, family and friends to log onto the website - www.solancoxc.org - and register to receive updates

Veterans’ Trust Fund grants awarded

Twelve Pennsylvania county Veterans Affairs offices have been awarded $150,000 in grants, and 21 charitable or Veteran Service Organizations have received $650,000 in grants from the Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).

The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing

their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration. Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 million has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.

Grantees slated to receive

funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.

A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs

or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category were veterans’ outreach, transportation services, and homelessness. Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide outreach and awareness services to veterans.

Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-toschool-themed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiber pediatric.org/events/duckies.

Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price

of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.

For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasengarb @schreiberpediatric.org.

DMVA available to help veterans locate lost documents

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) works to assist veterans with locating their lost DD Form 214 (DD-214) and other military documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits for which they qualify.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation or discharge from active duty in the U.S. armed forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through military service.

The DMVA can also assist with locating the DD-215, which is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD214, helping to ensure that veterans have accurate discharge documentation.

The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid having to frantically search for

them is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military.

Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate his or her DD-214/215 or other military documentation may call 800-547-2838 or email

RA-REQ@pa.gov. More information about locating military documents can be found by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov and searching for “Records Request Program.”

Another way to stay in touch is for veterans, family

members and people who work with veterans to sign up for the DMVA’s Veterans Registry by visiting www.register .dmva.pa.gov.

Overdose awareness event slated

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed around the world on Aug. 31. It is a day to acknowledge the grief felt by families and

friends remembering those who have died from a drug overdose, and it aims to reduce the stigma of a drugrelated death. Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss will host an event to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. It is open to anyone regardless of if their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.

The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, and will feature keynote speaker Lori Kuhn, a boardcertified registered nurse, certified grief counselor and grief recovery method specialist. She has been impacted by the death of her daughter from an overdose. Kuhn, who lost her child as well as her husband within a four-year period, will talk about her journey through processing her grief to becoming whole, happy, and able to move forward with her life.

There is no cost to attend the International Overdose Awareness Day event, but registration is required. To register, visit www.HospiceCommunity .org/oad or call the Pathways Center at 717-391-2413.

restore and maintain the church campus, which is known as the oldest Covenanter church in North America. The majority of the foundation’s profits from last year’s festival have been used for the general upkeep of the building, due to a few setbacks in the restoration process. The foundation began to replace the electrical wiring of the structure earlier in the year, but it halted the project after encountering a colony of bats.

Attached to the church is the school room museum, which is curated by former foundation president Barry Girvin. The museum houses a collection of artifacts and documents from Scotland that were brought to Pennsylvania by settlers in the 18th century. The museum

also contains records of families and students from the many schools that once populated the Southern End, which date back from the 19th century up until the formation of the Solanco School District. Before the it was converted into a museum, the building served as Bart Township’s high school.

“(The museum) has a wide range of history on the Covenanter Church, Middle Octorara and many other churches and schools that were in the area,” Girvin said. “We have some artifacts from them that are quite unusual.” Girvin hopes to have the museum open for tours by the day of the festival.

Resources posted for mitigating electrical fire hazards

With temperatures breaking records around the world, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is distributing information on how to beat the heat safely. The resources include action steps and tip sheets that can help residents stay firesafe when using portable air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices in warmer weather.

NFPA advises people to plug only one heat-producing appliance, such as a coffee maker or toaster, into a receptacle outlet at a time. Plug major appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, or air conditioners, directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.

Check electrical cords to make sure they do not run across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended only for temporary use. Have a qualified electri-

cian add more receptacle outlets in the home to reduce the use of extension cords.

People should also turn off lights when they are not in the room and unplug appliances when not in use.

Residents should call a qualified electrician or their landlord if they encounter any of the following warning signs in a house or apartment: frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers, a tingling feeling when touching an electrical appliance, discolored or warm wall outlets, a burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance, flickering or dimming lights, or sparks from an outlet.

In the case of an electrical power outage due to a storm, it is important to also understand how to safely use a portable generator.

For tip sheets and other resources, visit www.nfpa.org.

A sheepherding demonstration will be among a variety of activities taking place during the day.

Quarryville, and it has since offered shows in Oxford, Richfield, Liverpool and Glen Iron.

At 7:15 p.m., Summit Hill Bluegrass will perform. The Strasburg-based ensemble will play a combination of bluegrass and gospel songs, and its four members are Tim Kilby on guitar, Keith Kupp on banjo, Ron McVey on fiddle and Roger Eberlin on double bass. The group has performed in the Huffnagle Park Concert Series for more than four years, quickly becoming a community favorite. A crowd of local fans return to the park each year to catch the Summit Hill Bluegrass’s outdoor performance.

“People come to see friends, hear good music and to get together with the people in their community,” said Gerald Wagner of the Quarryville Lions Club.

The concert is sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club, which took over hosting the series five years ago. The series was started over a decade ago by a Quarryville resident, and it quickly became a successful and

well-attended community tradition. Once the initial organizer was unable to continue hosting the concerts on his own, he approached the Lions Club and asked it to take over the events’ management. Due to the significant role the concert series played in the community, the service organization didn’t hesitate to offer assistance. “He needed the Lions Club to cover the expenses, and we said ‘Of course’,” said Wagner. “That’s what the club is all about: community service.”

In addition to sponsoring the annual concert series, the Quarryville Lions Club engages with the community in a variety of ways. The group regularly supports Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville, offers scholarships to students in the Solanco School District and sponsors a contestant in the fair queen contest during the Solanco Fair. One of the Quarryville Lions Club’s largest fundraisers is the sale of french fries at the fair.

Author talk will explore the work of Menno Simons

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host a guest speaker event for its members on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. The event will feature presentations from author and Bluffton University professor Gerald Mast, who will explore the life and writings of Menno Simons and his role in the foundation of the modern-day Anabaptist church.

Simons was a Dutch priest who was born in the late 15th century. He was ordained in the Roman Catholic church circa 1515, but he began to question its teachings in the years following. One of Simons’ primary points of contention with the church was the concept of infant baptism, which he believed to have no basis in Scripture; he aligned with the Anabaptist movement and officially departed from the Roman Catholic church in 1536. Simons

became one of the most influential figures in the Dutch Anabaptist religion, resulting in the term Mennonite being derived from his first name.

Mast will detail Simons’ ideology and shed light on the experiences that influenced his teachings, including Simons’ concept of “true evangelical faith.” The concept revolves around a hopeful approach toward one’s neighbors, salvation and relationship with God. Mast will explain the five theological characteristics of Simons’ teaching: converting to Jesus Christ in a personally transformative way, confessing to Christ’s work through repentance, creating a covenant within the congregation through baptism, maintaining a community of peace and reconciliation, and serving as a witness against all violence and killing.

“I hope the audience receives a strong appreciation for how Menno influenced the

direction of the Mennonite church and a new curiosity about how his writings can help the church today,” Mast said.

In the Mennonite Life Community Room, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions about Mast’s work, which includes a series of articles on the heritage of Pennsylvania Mennonites. Mast was inspired to write the series after he noticed that Simons’ writing possessed an eloquence that distinguished it from many other works within the religion. Mast was also fascinated by Simons’ decision to join the Anabaptist movement during a time when it had resorted to violent methods. Although more translations and editions of Simons’ work exist today than those of any other Anabaptist writer, Mast felt that it had been paid less attention in recent years.

During the event, attendees will have an opportunity to view a 1681 edition of

Simons’ writings in Dutch, which will be accompanied by an illustration by Jan Luyken. Luyken was an engraver who created the images found in “Martyr’s Mirror,” a book of stories that remains highly significant to both Mennonite and Amish communities today.

Mennonite Life members may attend the free event in person or via Zoom. For more information, visit www .mennonitelife.org/events.

Conservation advocates win awards

The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) recently held its annual conference in Harrisburg. Several conservationists were recognized during an awards luncheon on July 19.

The Legislator Leadership Award was presented to Sen. Scott Martin, who was nominated by the Lancaster County Conservation District. This award recognizes legislators for outstanding efforts to further the activities and accomplishments of the state’s conservation districts or PACD on a statewide basis. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Martin is an

advocate for conservation efforts across the state. He worked to enact the legislation that created the new statewide Agricultural Conservation Assistance Program, which represents a $154 million investment to help improve water quality and soil health. Martin was also instrumental in providing additional funding to conservation districts for their operational needs through the state budget process.

Piper Sherburne was one of two recipients of the President’s Award. The PACD executive board president - currently Kelly Stagen - selects an individual, organization, or agency to receive this award in recognition of their outstanding efforts that have resulted in furthering the accomplishments of PACD.

Sherburne is PACD’s South East Region director and chair

of the Berks County Conservation District board. She was recognized for her efforts to eradicate the spotted lanternfly in Pennsylvania. Sherburne is known locally, statewide, and now nationally

for her knowledge and input regarding this invasive pest. For more information about the work of the state’s 66 conservation districts, visit www.pacd.org or www.face book.com/PAConservation.

Native tree and shrub fundraiser planned

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Lancaster County will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.

The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification. Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.

Proceeds from this fundraiser support the Lancaster County Master Watershed Steward Program and its efforts to share information

and inspire improvements within local watersheds.

Preorders are required; no plants will be sold at the pickup locations. To place orders through Sunday, Aug. 27, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ mws-tree-sale.

Plants may be picked up on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

To learn more about the tree sale, visit the aforementioned website. A complete list of trees and shrubs with planting requirements is available at https://tinyurl.com/MWS -2023TreeSale under the “Tree/Shrub Catalog” tab. To place an order by phone, call 877-345-0691 on Mondays to Fridays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the population identifies as a minority to be in an environmental justice area.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes community tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or

plantings, regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.

Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in support of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.

To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmilliontrees.org/ contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing keystone trees@cbf.org or calling 717200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from the partner-

ship, to be used for a 2024 tree project.

Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decision-making table.

Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was

appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.

Museum, film festival announce collaboration

The North Museum of Nature and Science will be one of three screening locations for the Red Rose Film Festival on First Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. As an Executive Producer-level sponsor of the Red Rose Film Festival (RRFF), the North Museum will open its 85-seat planetarium for screenings of several of the festival’s selected independent films.

In addition to the North Museum, the screening locations for the four-year-old festival are Zoetropolis and Lancaster Southern Market. One of the festival’s goals is to promote Lancaster to global filmmakers as a fertile place to create future works.

From more than 100 films submitted from all over the globe, the final selections will be made by a diverse panel of judges. Film submissions are due Friday, Sept. 1, and the screening schedule will be announced in mid-September. Additional information is available at www.redrosefilm festival.com.

To learn more about the North Museum, visit www.northmuseum.org.

Landis Valley to reopen historic house

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.

The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.

Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
