Public Will “General-Lee” Have Fun At Civil War Encampment BY COURTNEY MENGEL
or about nine years, Narvon resident J. Arthur Moore, a retired teacher and author, has developed Civil War programs to be presented at schools and libraries. the Civil War in his presentations. The presentations are also part of the Living History Encampment and Tactical Demonstrations at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. This year’s encampment, sponsored by the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3,
from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Courtesy of Moore’s book sales, the event is free to the public. “Education is important,” said Moore. In 2019, Moore was nominated and selected to receive Freedoms Foundation’s National Award, the George Washington Honor Medal. According to
David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promotion of an understanding and appreciation for the country’s heritage, principles, and freedoms. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,” said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were facing, but there was a lot of prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its
21st annual golf tournament, to be held at three different locations on Friday, Sept. 17. The round at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave.,York, will begin at 1 p.m. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr., Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Bridgewater Golf Club, 601 Chestnut Hill Road, York, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about the tournaments may be found at www.hope international.org/pagolf. Those who wish to sponsor the event may email asmith@hopeinter national.org or call 717-4643220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 3. Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright

spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings
group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business sense. “She was making about 50 cents a day working in fields and gardens,” said Rutt, who noted that Marie was able to save 25 cents a week from her pay, and with a $5 loan from the group she started a small business selling See HOPE pg 3

When Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in financial trouble, she forgave them and helped them financially. “She got them connected to their own savings groups,” said Rutt. “It’s a really cool cycle because she used her talents and skills, and she is now able to help others in the community,” he added. “(Marie is) not just better off financially, but (she had) forgiveness and compassion on someone (about whom) she could have said, ‘I don’t want anything to do with (them) because of what they did to (me).’” According to Rutt, Marie’s story is an example of the heart behind HOPE. “The cool thing is that over the course of 23 years we have been able to raise about $200 million, but we have been able to lend $1.3 billion,” said Rutt. “It’s a really effective way to help … by partnering with strong, working, (deserving) families like Marie’s.”

The Student Leadership Council (SLC), a program of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), has launched the Squish Squad, joining efforts throughout Pennsylvania to contain and eradicate the invasive spotted lanternfly. A total of 34 counties in the commonwealth are under quarantine by the state Department of Agriculture. Residents and businesses are encouraged to learn how to stop the spread of the insect, which damages trees, vines, and other plants and which poses a threat to agriculture. The Squish Squad is using the three-pronged approach of advocacy, awareness, and action in its campaign against the spotted lanternfly. The effort by high school students complements a variety of approaches already in place through-
out the commonwealth that are designed to eradicate the pests, which first showed up in Pennsylvania in 2014. On the Squish Squad’s first educational and scouting trip earlier this summer in Lancaster County, students found a few spotted lanternflies in their black and white-spotted nymph stage, charted the insects’ locations, and then squashed them. Students also spent time learning more about the insects and planning activities for late summer and fall. The Squad plans to partner with county conservation districts and nature preserves. It also intends to lead workshops on how to build spotted lanternfly traps using materials found around the home. A project working group is taking photos of spotted lantern-

about the lore of the little people. Then comes the trail, which is about a half-mile long. Visitors see Gnomehenge, Gnome Canyon, - one of the Nine UnGnome Wonders of the World - the Gnome Playground, Gnome Niagara, and along the way, children are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. On March 24, 2014, the 237year-old American Chestnut log house where Humpfreys and his then-wife had lived for 37 years and raised three children burned down. Humpfreys noted that although it didn’t seem like it at the time, his house burning down was an unexpected bless-
ing. “Without the house fire, I would not have this wonderful new house with the many improvements that have been made on the property because of it,” he said. “And without diabetes, I never would have started Gnome Countryside.” Gnome Countryside is located at 63 Bridle Path Road, Kirkwood. “I would say the two biggest blessings in my life have been my house burning down and diabetes,” wrote Kirkwood resident Richard Humpfreys. “That may seem like a strange thing to say, but one thing I have learned is that so much of life depends upon your attitude.” Ever since he was 14 years old, Humpfreys has lived with Type 1 diabetes, but this disease has never held him back from pursuing his dreams and doing what makes him happy. Humpfreys applied to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 1961 and, while enrolled, went on a two-monthlong road trip to the West Coast. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in education from MICA in 1965, and two years later, he found himself working as a middle school art teacher in Quarryville. After getting married in June 1967 and securing teaching jobs, Humpfreys and his then-wife, Mary Lou Crittenden, moved to Alaska for a year, and after the school year ended, they decided to travel around Europe. After their trip, they were ready to return to Lancaster County and
settle into their new lives in Kirkwood. A side effect of diabetes is eye hemorrhaging, and by 1980, both of Humpfreys’ eyes had hemorrhaged. Although he received laser treatment, which stabilized his vision for a few years, Humpfreys knew that his vision problems would negatively impact his teaching career. While thinking of other ways to make a living, Humpfreys remembered stories and traditions he heard from indigenous people in Denmark and Iceland about little people who dwell in the woods. Humpfreys thought of the little people as gnomes, so he decided he would create a nature trail on his property, where he would tell stories and look for gnomes with children. This was how Gnome Countryside was born. “When children visit Gnome Countryside, I greet them in my gnome outfit: lederhosen, hiking boots, a red gnome hat, and big oversized sunglasses,” said Humpfreys. “The children always laugh at my outfit. I love to hear children laughing.” Each visit starts with an introduction in the Gnomery, where Humpfreys shows children gnome artifacts and talks

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and co-workers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create
a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of

one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required
because there will be same-day registration. To preregister, visit https://lancasterstair climb.org/registration. Spectators are welcome. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs fund programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. For more information, visit https://lancasterstairclimb. org or email syuill@lancaster stairclimb.org. To learn more about the NFFF, visit www.firehero.org.

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driver will be invited to throw
out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers. In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale of a replica 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe built in-house, as well as the tools used to build the car.
