The 11th annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it will feature a variety of live music, games, demonstrations and other traditional activities to celebrate Scottish culture and history.

The Phila delphia and District Pipe Band and Ceòl Nèamh Pipe Band will perform arrangements of Scottish music during the opening ceremony. The two groups will also participate in a competition that will double as a practice for the Celtic Classic Highland Games in Bethlehem, which both outfits will

The Scottish Festival will incorporate Highland Games, which will offer attendees an opportunity participate in customary athletic competitions such as the caber toss in addition to bagpiping and Scottish dancing contests. This year, the event will also feature a Gaelic Language Village, which will include interactive activities to highlight Gaelic music and poetry. The Gaelic Language Village, which will be operated by members of the Gaelic School of Baltimore, will also feature a demonstration of “walking the cloth,” a collaborative method of making durable garments and blankets that was created by Scottish women. Various demonstrations will take place throughout the day, including sheepherding, spinning and weaving. Scottish clans from across Pennsylvania and neighboring states will be in attendance to sell merchandise and refresh -
ments, in addition to offering informational resources on Scottish history. Attendees of all ages may sign up for an educational activity to learn Highland dancing techniques at 2 p.m.
Every year, the Scottish Festival features an old-fashioned haggis ceremony to provide information on the rare dish and its history. Participants in the ceremony may have a taste of haggis and a sip of Scotch whiskey for one of Scotland’s most popular customs.
The Covenanter Scottish Festival was started by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation in 2013 as a means to acquire the funds necessary to restore and maintain the church campus. The event serves as one of the largest fundraisers for the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, which is believed to be North America’s oldest Covenanter church. In recent years, the foundation has used the profits

from the Scottish Festival to cover the building’s general maintenance costs and ongoing restoration projects. The funds raised by this year’s event will help the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation replace the ceiling of the church’s museum.
“The Scottish Festival has continued to grow every year, and we’ve continued to add more activities and new attractions,”
said Donna McCool, who co-chairs the event with John Girvin. “At first, we had 200 people come out; now we have more than 1,000 participants every year. It’s an event that’s unique to the area, which has a rich history of Scottish and Irish settlers; it’s a good thing for people to honor their heritage.” For more information, visit www.covenanter scottishfestival.com.

Beyond making services available to veterans, the Lancaster Vet Center (LVC) has a desire to make sure those benefits are being used. LVC wants to serve veterans in much the same way that veterans served others.
“Some veterans will say, ‘Why me? Why do I deserve this?’’’ said Phil Grant, who’s been LVC’s director since February of 2022. “The reason is because your service qualified you for these services. There’s no fee. There’s no cost. The eligibility doesn’t expire. They earned it through their time in the military.”
“Our motto is ‘Connection, Camaraderie, Community,’” continued Grant.
“We want to live up to that. When you come here, you’ll be able to connect with your vet community and build that camaraderie. That’s what we’re striving for.”
Located at 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, the LVC serves United States military veterans through oneon-one counseling, group therapy, veteran events and outreach programs. A branch of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and affiliated with the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Hospital, LVC also works with other outside organizations to resolve any difficulty a veteran might encounter.
“We are here to help veterans and their families
readjust to life after their experience in the military,” said Grant. “It’s a lot of moving pieces. We want to help the community know who we are and what we do. We work with veterans for very specific treatment plans. We maintain relationships in the community to get them a higher echelon of care if that’s necessary.”
LVC serves between 80 and 100 veterans from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties each month. According to a 2021 census, those counties are home to a total of 26,351 veterans.
“We have vets who have been in combat,” said Grant. “We have some vets who are out of active duty and just want to connect with the community. Some have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Some are just trying to successfully transition from the military and move on. It’s a wide swatch.”
“Once veterans know we exist, some will determine
it’s not something they really need, and they’ll spread the word,” added Grant. “These benefits exist because people use them. If they weren’t used the funding would disappear. No one is taking a service away from someone else. Some vets don’t need the services. Some are good right now and can come back if they need to.”
One of 12 veterans’ centers in the state, LVC was established in 2010. As a whole, the veterans’ center program was established in 1979 and now operates 300 branches nationwide.
“We want to give veterans a place where they can come so they can live their best lives, not just for themselves but also for their families,” Grant said. “It’s not just for them; it’s also for everyone in their circle. For the veteran community in general, it’s sometimes hard to come to the table

Webinar to focus on feral hogs
Penn State Extension will hold a webinar, “A Squeal for Help: Preventing Feral Hog Invasions,” on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at noon.
Feral hogs are one of the most damaging non-native species in North America. Historically confined to the Southeastern United States, they have spread and now threaten forests, wetlands, and other habitats from Florida to Saskatchewan. In the webinar, participants will learn about the role humans play in feral hog invasions, strategies to slow their spread, and early intervention steps for new invasions. The program is designed for foresters, landowners, biologists, and other interested parties.
There is a fee for those seeking continuing education credits, with no free for all other attendees. Registration is required https://tinyurl.com/ FeralHogInvasion.
A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants after the live event, and the recording will be accessible for six months from the event date.

“Death is not a part of life we get to avoid, no matter if you’re rich, poor, young or old,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy at hospice. “Everybody should have the right to dignity and compassion at the end of their lives, and families should be able to spend their final days as family members instead of acting as a nurse or a doctor.”
The first Labor Day auction benefiting hospice was held at Willow Street Fire Company, and it raised a little more than $2,000. Forty years later, the event has steadily grown with the Lancaster community, and
it raised about $1.1 million last year. Hospice has also continued to expand its capacity for patients; the number of patients the organization serves annually has increased from six individuals in 1980 to 600 patients today. “The community has helped us grow into the organization it needs to serve people here,” Lewis said. “We’ve been really fortunate to grow right on pace with Lancaster County, and we’re serving more people than ever before.”
