We also got a lot of compliments on the slide.” “This summer was really good for us,” stated Celeste Esposito, administrative assistant at SECA. “In addition to the slide, we got a pool wheelchair this year, which I was super excited about since I have a daughter with special needs, so she was able to enjoy the pool.” “We’d like to thank everyone who came out this season,” said Kerns. “ We hope to see you all next summer!” To learn more about SECA, visit www.secarec.org.

SECA’s mission is to create recreational opportunities for residents of the Southern End by providing high-value programs for children and adults. And one day a year, it also caters to their dogs. On Saturday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., SECA will host its annual Doggie Dip event. Before I was born, my nanny and pappy, Beverly and Joseph Mengel, separated. When I was in elementary school, I grew very close to a woman named Diana, who was dating my pappy at the time. While the two of them were together, Diana was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly, she passed away from the disease. A few years later, my pappy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He stayed strong - stronger than I ever thought possible. But I woke up one morning during my sophomore year at Lebanon Valley College to a phone call from my younger sister. Through her tears and shaky voice, she told me our pappy was gone. Our nanny passed away from ovarian cancer no more than a year after him. It all happened so quickly. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been aware of how cancer can affect not only those who have the disease, but also the friends, co-workers, and family members around them. Lynda Charles, founder of Help The Fight, understands what I mean.

The new director at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap, has a wealth of experience in social services, ranging from counseling to teaching teen dating violence prevention, but it is networking that was on Straub’s mind when asked about her background. “I was networking with community agencies (in my prior position), and I had a lot of contacts,” recalled Straub. “That was one of the reasons (then-director) Debbie (Davenport) said she hired me (as client services and outreach specialist in 2018).”

Jennie Straub

Straub’s experience in networking occurred when she worked for Lancaster County Juvenile Probation, where, along with another officer, she set up a community service program by connecting with various county organizations. In her previous role at Cornerstone, she worked with clients, facilitated educational programs, and oversaw volunteers, but she also built relationships with community organizations such as Solanco Family Life Network in Quarryville, CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, and The Factory Ministries in Paradise. The ministry also serves Octorara Area and Oxford Area school districts. Before Straub began networking with area agencies, the Williamsport native majored in criminal justice at Edinboro University. After graduation, she worked at a maximum security juvenile facility for teen girls in Danville. She also served as a social worker for a foster care agency, counseling juveniles and their families for four years. After marrying and moving to Lancaster County, Straub worked for juvenile probation and, as her three daughters were born, held a series of part-time jobs before landing

at Cornerstone, where she was promoted to director of operations in 2019. Straub is proud of having taught Constructing Safe Relationships, a curriculum focused on preventing teen dating violence, to well over 600 students at area schools, including Solanco and Oxford, in the last two years. She also schooled student assistant program teachers at Garden Spot High School in the details of the program. “These are teachers who are identified as safe (people) for kids who need to talk or are struggling,” she explained. Looking ahead, Straub will be working to implement Cornerstone’s current strategic plan, which includes offering more off-site engagements, diversifying services through innovation, and developing recurring revenue streams. “(We’d also like to see) more client referrals coming from community partnerships,” said Straub, noting she plans to continue developing relationships with other local organizations. Readers who would like to know more about Cornerstone may visit www .pregnancyresources.org or call 717-442-8694.

Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interestfree loans to 257 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their post-secondary education for the 2021-22 school year. The recipients are applicants who demonstrated financial need. The interest-free loans varied from $850 each for students attending one semester only to $1,700 each for students attending a full academic year. LDHL awarded loans to nine single-semester students and 248 full-year students. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at 82 colleges and universities across the country. Since 1961, LDHL has partnered with donors each year to provide more than $18 million in interest-free loans to Lancaster County students seeking higher education. Loans are also made possible each year by the repayment of loans granted to previous recipients. LDHL is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary education goals. By offering funds to Lancaster County students on an annual basis, LDHL hopes to lessen the long-term expense for postsecondary education and training. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org.

Well, it won’t exactly be a visit, but there will be a virtual watch party. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 9, Christian Business Fellowship and Mission Church will co-host a watch party for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences: “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and “Faith Driven Inventors.” The mission of Faith Driven Movements is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people to use their time, talents, and other resources in the marketplace. Faith Driven Movements brings together leaders from around the world who seek to make a financial, social, environmental, and spiritual impact through their business ventures. Last year, Faith Driven Movements held its first global, virtual conference. The first day was catered to entrepreneurs and the second to investors. The same two-day format will be

used this year. Watch parties in Lancaster County for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences will be held at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. On both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, registration will open at 11 a.m. and the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided both days, and the conference will conclude at 5 p.m. “The price to attend is kept very reasonable,” said Jeff Hostetter, member of Mission Church and Christian Business Fellowship. “People can come to one day or they get a combo ticket to attend both.” There will be 31 virtual speakers at “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and 33 at “Faith Driven Inventors Live.” Among them will be Tim Keller, Cathie Wood, and Donald Miller. Keller is the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to City, founder of The Gospel Coalition, and author of “The Rea-

Organizing the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride are (from left) Jason L’Heureux, Andrea McHenry, Wayne and Jennifer King, Elizabeth and Brent Bair, and Mike Kulkusky.

Located at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville, Help The Fight is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. The organization has provided funds to buy groceries and tires, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. As a nonprofit, the organization can help anyone regardless of where they live, but Lancaster County and surrounding counties are its prime focus. On Saturday, Oct. 2, Help The Fight will host its annual Benefit Banquet and Auction. The event will take place at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be giveaways, silent and live auctions, and games. Dinner will be included with the purchase of a ticket, and there will be a cash bar. The event will be casual, and Melanie Gardner from Warm 103.3 will serve as the master of ceremonies.

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will

Joyce and Ken Swarr recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, which occurred on Dec. 18, 2020. Due to the pandemic, the Swarrs celebrated quietly at home on the day of the anniversary and then took a family vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., this summer with all their children and grandchildren.

2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.

COBYS Family Services will offer virtual resource family information sessions on Tuesday, Sept. 7, and Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. An in-person session will be held on Monday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster. The information sessions are designed for families wanting to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care. During a two-hour educational session, families will receive an introduction to the roles, expectations, and approval process for COBYS resource families. The session is free and places no obligation on those attending. Child care will not be provided. For more information or to reserve a space for an information session, contact a COBYS resource home coordinator at 717-656-6580 or www.careforkids@cobys.org.
