Union Church Plans Eclectic Extravaganza By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“The Eclectic Extravaganza is proving its name,” Betty Vasco declared. “We have an eclectic collection, from an ax to a zoo.” Vasco is a member of the Union Presbyterian Women (UPW) and the coordinator of this year’s Eclectic Extravaganza, which is what she dubbed the yard sale that the women’s group has held annually at Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Church Road, Kirkwood, for more than 20 years. The sale is typically held on Memorial Day, but like so many other events planned this spring, it was postponed. The Eclectic Extravaganza will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 5, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Church members and friends donated items, which UPW members priced and arranged in the
air-conditioned fellowship hall. “I’ve been pleased with the donations,” Vasco remarked, noting that they include gleanings from several estate liquidations. “You won’t believe what it looks like. We have 50 tables full of things. See Eclectic Extravaganza pg 3

The young couple at a dinner party that Valley Farm Supply owners J.C. and Caren Remsberg attended was frustrated with the challenges facing their small trucking company: hiring people, growing the business, and even the possibility of returning to work for someone else. The Remsbergs were empathetic, and they passed along the same advice J.C. had received from a college friend who owns a logging business. “Nothing is better than being on your own as a businessperson, and he knew that,” J.C. related. “We really talked SCORE up to him and (that) he needs to be in the next Simple Steps program.” “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is an active chapter of professional mentors See Simple Steps pg 2 Ephrata

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. got to hear from other new and potential business owners in the program and heard what they wanted to achieve.” Simple Steps alumna and Sage Heart Studio owner Ramona Ndlovu also found the program helpful. “It was an encouragement to see so many other small business owners and hopefuls giving entrepreneurship a try. I was not alone,” she said. “Some of my classmates had already been running successful businesses, and it was especially helpful to hear their questions, insights, and ways of solving challenges.” Ndlovu appreciated the opportunity to ask specific questions about her business, which enabled her to determine what she could do on her own and

who are here to help people who want to start or optimize their business,” explained certified mentor and education committee chair Catherine Bonser. “This is a service available to small businesses at no charge to them.” The local SCORE chapter offers one-to-one mentoring as well as educational programs, including the flagship “Simple Steps for Starting a Business.” Simple Steps involves five two-hour sessions currently conducted online - in which experienced professionals cover business planning, funding, legal considerations, marketing, and other subjects. “The Simple Steps program was excellent and helped answer a lot of basic questions we had about business,” J.C. said. “We

where she might need to hire experts. At the first session, she learned about important paperwork she needed to file with a state agency. “The course provided helpful, timely, and thorough information for supporting the growth of my business. In class, the presenters made sure to use class members’ business types as examples so we could better understand how to put the tools into practice,” she remarked. The Simple Steps program is offered six times a year, and information about upcoming sessions is available at https://lancaster.score.org. There is a cost to participate in Simple Steps. SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon offers additional educational
programs, some of which have been designed specifically to address current issues in business. “ We regrouped when COVID hit,” Bonser commented. “We put together a number of programs … to help businesses navigate these new waters.” A number of those programs were recorded and posted to the @scorelancaster YouTube account. Timely titles include “PIVOT: Process for Restarting Business,” “PPP - Clearing Away the Clutter,” “Tips to Open Safely With COVID-19 Cleaning & Disinfection Requirements,” “Expert Panel: Sustaining Safe Business Operations,” and “Marketing Your Business on Social Media in 2020 and Beyond.” Other recordings from webinars and Chamber Lunch & Learns discuss hiring and retaining employees, cashflow planning and management, and managing business risk. Bonser noted that SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon offers programs in conjunction with The Candy Factory and networks with the Chambers of Commerce in Lancaster and Lebanon counties to provide educational programs for their members. SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon also organizes roundtable events, where representatives of like-type businesses can meet in small groups to discuss issues relevant to their industries. To view a schedule of upcoming programs, register to attend Simple Steps, request a mentor, or learn more about SCORE in general, readers may visit https://lancaster.score.org or call the office at 717-397-3092.

Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global non-
profits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Heritage Society Plans Barbecue, Garden Tour By Dayna M. Reidenouer
September will be busy for the Strasburg Heritage Society. The organization’s fifth annual pulled pork fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg. The following weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 20, from noon to 4 p.m., the society will offer the Strasburg Garden Tour: A Prelude to Autumn, a self-guided tour of a dozen sites in Strasburg. Proceeds from these fundraisers will benefit the society, which was formed in 1977 to preserve, collect, and interpret the rich history of Strasburg. “Thanks in part to the organization’s efforts, Strasburg was voted one of the 10 most historic and picturesque towns in America,” Society board member Ann Lainhoff shared. The society has collected artifacts and historic documents related to the borough, and it owns three historic buildings on South Decatur Street. The Shroy House has been undergoing restoration for a number of years, and the society plans to open a museum for Strasburg there.

“It is often said that Strasburg has a greater number of surviving 18th-century structures than Colonial Williamsburg. My own home was built in 1769. We must continue to advocate for preservation of this local heritage as our community changes and grows to meet present needs,” John Hershey commented. Hershey is the co-chair of the garden tour along with LaJune Ranck and Marilyn Weaver. His home at 48 E. Main St. will be included on the tour. Hershey noted that the society’s first president, Fred Williams, previously lived in the house. Hershey is a landscape architect, and he trials various plants at home before using them in his designs. Between the structured and naturalized areas, the property includes more than 350 different types of trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, and bulbs, as well as annuals and a small kitchen garden. During the tour, Hershey will display pottery shards and other remnants of early household items discarded by previous inhabitants and dug up during the past few years. On the other end of town and the design spectrum - Ben and Lynn Stiles have developed a backyard living space rather than a garden. A G-scale model train layout and a kiddie crank car track are the prominent features at their circa 1895 home at 212 Georgetown Road. The landscape includes handmade bridges and a waterfall, but some plants are included, such as dwarf Sedums, thyme, and a specimen “White Swan” hydrangea. “We’re most excited about the diversity of these 12 sites, as they represent unique landscape characteristics and gardener personalities inherent to each tour

The annual Covenanter Scottish Festival, sponsored by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, will be held on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, on Saturday, Sept. 12. Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course virtually in September. The Pennsylvania Food Code will soon require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be onsite at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the course at many locations across the state. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification will be good for five years. Penn State Extension will hold the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course in Spanish at two locations. Activities will follow CDC and local guidelines for COVID-19. The course will take place at the Farm and Home Center,

As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant

about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can be done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.” Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line … hearing the gun go off … we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,” said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,” she said. “We’re excited for this.” “We have monetary prizes for the winners of the in-person race,” reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be
awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place overall finishers were Merlin Lantz of Leola with a time of 18:58 and Ann King of Lititz with a time of 23:16. COVID-19 precautions will include limiting the race to 225 entrants. Masks are encouraged during non-running portions of the event, but are not required during the run. Social distancing will be encouraged. Link explained that the water stations will be self-serve, offering small bottles of water for runners to pick up as they pass. Friendship Community is a faithbased, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We are really trying to think outside the box, as we have had to do for all COVID fundraising,” said Link, who noted that crowd support fundraising will be available this year. “As people register, they can create a fundraising page, so they can find sponsors for their first mile and second mile.” Registrants who want to raise additional funds may do so at http://bit.ly /FC-5K-Fundraise2020. The cost for the event will be discounted and a free tech shirt will be guaranteed until the close of early registration on Sept. 4. A smaller discount will continue to apply until Friday, Sept. 25. Tech shirts will be distributed while supplies last. Online registration, available at www.Friendship Community.net/5K, will close at midnight Wednesday, Sept. 23. There will be no discount for those who register on the day of the race. Readers who have questions may call 717-6562466 or email development@friend shipcommunity.net.

Grant Supports LIFT Jobs Program Community Action Partnership (CAP) recently announced it received a $22,336 grant from the Truist Foundation in support of Learning In Full-Time (LIFT) Jobs, a partnership between CAP and Ephratabased Four Seasons Produce. LIFT Jobs is a yearlong pilot program for low-income single mothers. It combines on-the-job training at Four Seasons Produce with intentional life skills development. Stipends are available to the participants for transportation, child care, and housing, three of the biggest barriers to employment facing single mothers struggling with poverty. By eliminating barriers to employment and supporting employees with personal and professional development, CAP is working to help the program’s participants escape the cycle of intergenerational poverty. LIFT Jobs takes the things people living in poverty need to become economically empowered - a good job, an understanding employer, and safety net supports and brings them all together. This pilot program is testing a new model of employment that can be mutually beneficial to individuals who need jobs and companies looking to fill open positions. Funding from Truist Foundation will allow CAP to support the program participants with stipends for housing, including application fees, security deposits, first and last month’s rent, and any other housing-related expenses that could derail a participant’s successful employment in the program.
