A small taste of New Hope and local cuisine
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
ATaste of New Hope, a fundraising event benefiting New Hope Counseling Center, will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. The small plate-style event will include a live auction, a silent auction and food from a variety of local restaurants, and the proceeds will support the many programs New Hope Counseling Center offers the community.
Tickets for the event may be purchased for a set cost per attendee, and food is included in the cost of admission. Guests will be able to enjoy appetizers and small plates from local businesses such as Barnyard Catering & Concessions, Dolce Vita, Oola Bowls, Sarah’s Custom Cakery and C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant.
At 7 p.m., guests will have an opportunity to bid on a variety of items in a live auction, including
fresh meat from Farm Fresh Beef, a handmade quilt donated by Union Presbyterian Church and apparel from Ross Lawn Service.
The live auction will also feature four giant cookies, custom-made by Sarah’s Custom Cakery, and an original C.X. Carlson painting. The live auction will be facilitated by auctioneer Eric Lefever.
The silent auction will include gift cards for local restaurants, a custom-made birdhouse from Rannels Custom Creations, tickets to Longwood Gardens and various other items for men, women and children.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the New Hope Chest Fund, which New Hope Counseling Center uses to offer financial assistance to participants in its therapy programs. “About 75% of our clients receive financial aid, which is why the New Hope Chest Fund is so vital,” said Deb Riddell, New Hope’s executive director.

Did you know that bees must visit approximately 23,000 flowers to make one teaspoon of honey? Or that raw honey has 2,000 intrinsic factors that include antibacterial and antiviral properties? If you did, there’s a good chance you’ve been hanging out with Jodie Combs, an active member of the Conestoga Herb Guild and a bee aficionado who tends to multiple hives located on her property in New Providence.
Jodie’s husband, David, first approached her about beekeeping seven years ago. The couple

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sister-in-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David Charles, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help
The Fight. Fifteen years later, the organization has raised more than $1.2 million dollars for breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.
Help The Fight will host its 15th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The event will take place from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., and it will include live and silent auctions, prize drawings and giveaways.

Railroad Heritage Day slated
Railroad Heritage Day will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Among the activities will be a gallery talk, “Art of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania,” by museum curator Dodie Robbins at 11 a.m. in the second-floor gallery. The program will also feature art by Grif Teller and Ted Rose as well as the Pennsylvania Railroad presidential portraits.
Elizabeth Myers, museum volunteer and program coordinator, will present “A Brief History of the Broadway Limited” at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Throughout the event, the Rolling Stock Hall will
feature a Pennsylvania Railroad truck owned by Ken Briers and a kids’ craft table.
Some of the museum’s historic locomotives and railroad cars will be open for visitors to experience. Railroad Heritage Day activities are included in the regular museum admission.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center, a research library and archives, special events and exhibits, and a museum store. Book now available at local libraries
The book “How to Become a Strong Person and Build a Good Life” by James Wegert is now
available at the Manheim Township, Mountville and Quarryville libraries.
Students invited to join program at Ephrata Cloister
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, invites students ages 14 to 18 to join the site’s Student Historian program, an after-school experience that delves into 18th-century history, trades, and crafts.
For more than 60 years, the Historic Ephrata Cloister has offered local students the opportunity to explore their community’s heritage while developing public speaking and critical thinking skills. The Student Historian program provides an opportunity to learn the art of interpretation in an immersive, hands-on environment.
The program will take place from mid-September to mid-May, with weekly sessions on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. From January onward, meetings will shift to every other Thursday, offering flexibility for stu-
dents’ busy schedules.
The Student Historian program includes the opportunity to be a part of the Cloister’s Lantern Tours, a signature theatrical event held during the holiday season - from Friday to Monday, Dec. 27 to 30, this year. Student Historians will also have the opportunity to assist with special events and programs throughout the year.
To kick off the 2024-25 program, an informational session will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ephrata Cloister Visitor Center. The session is open to new and prospective participants, as well as their parents. Registration is requested by contacting Dan Roe, museum educator II, at daroe@pa.gov or 717-733-6600.
For more information, visit www.ephrataclo ister.org.
Using his more than 25 years of experience working with youths, Wegert wrote the book in a down-to-earth, encouraging manner to help high school students and young adults develop the tools, such as character, attitude, responsibility, effort and self-control, that they need in order to be more successful academically, personally and socially. The book also explains to readers how to use the aforementioned five tools to build a good life through respect for their jobs, others and themselves by dealing with negative people in a positive way and by making good choices. For young people, their job is to be a student.
The book contains 70 true short stories, including humorous and serious stories, to illustrate the main points. About 15 of the stories have been placed in a special section because they are appropriate for people age 15 and up.
The book can also be used by parents and grandparents as they teach their children and grandchildren how to become strong people.
Church to offer GriefShare program
Mt. Nebo Church, 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea, will offer the GriefShare support program on Thursdays starting Sept. 12. The free program will meet every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. through Dec. 19, with the exception of Nov. 28.
The meetings will incorporate new material from the GriefShare program, which offers resources to help those who have lost a loved one. During each meeting, participants will discuss a specific topic, such as learning to adapt to altered patterns and routines. The meeting will include a video and group discussion and activities using the GriefShare workbook.
The session will be led by Ron Harris and his wife, Sandy Harris. Ron has previously participated in multiple GriefShare groups throughout the county, and he began leading the program at Mt. Nebo Church last year. Due to Ron’s experience with the program, both as a participant and a trained group leader, he volunteered to reinstate the group to give
other people in the community the support he once received. Ron also wished to make the program accessible for those who aren’t able to register for other groups in the area due to a limited number of spaces.
Ron first joined a GriefShare group five years ago after the death of his wife, Majorie, to whom he had been married for 54 years.
Sandy joined Ron’s group at Mt. Nebo Church last year, and she offered to assist with the program this year to accommodate female members who may feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with another woman.
Before retiring in 2004, Ron worked as a pupil services coordinator for Penn Manor School District for 34 years. Although he worked closely with school psychologists, guidance counselors and school nurses over the course of his career, Ron is not a licensed psychologist; he will offer participants information about services that he is unable to provide during GriefShare sessions.

Beekeeper
decided it would be a fitting pastime for a family with the name Combs, and Jodie began researching what it would take to start raising bees. After some research and communication with local beekeeping organizations, Jodie and David learned of a nucleus colony, or nuc for short. A nuc is a small colony of honey bees that can be used as the foundation for a new hive. The nuc consists of bees from captured swarms or larger bee farm colonies. After diving into the world of beekeeping, Jodie has not only learned a lot about bees, but also become familiar with their habits and preferences, including their daily schedules and what plants they are attracted to. The Combs family home is a vibrant grove of flowers, and Jodie purposefully grows many

plants people often disregard as weeds. Dandelions, chickweed and jewelweed are only a few of the many varieties preferred by bees, and many flowers produce peak pollen levels at different times of day. Jodie said she had noticed the bees visit dandelions between 10 and 11 a.m. during the plants peak pollen time, and other pollen sources peak between noon and 4 p.m. “That’s why you don’t just want to have a nice yard with nothing in it. Ours is a big, weedy mess,” Jodie joked.
In addition to shaping the landscape of the Combs home, beekeeping has sparked a passion in Jodie and her daughter, Emily Kauffman, for making a variety of items with honey and beeswax. Jodie and Emily make honey, wax figures, balms, candles and several other items with the products of their hives.
“People don’t understand if you lose your bees, you lose 85% of your food,” Jodie said. “Every bee has a different function. There’s just so much about them that is so amazing.”
Jodie and Emily will sell their items at the Conestoga Herb Guild’s annual Herb Fest, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. During the event, Jodie will present a program titled “The Buzz About Bees” to share her experience as a beekeeper and to offer insight on the importance of bees and their fascinating behavior. Herb Fest will be open to the public and free to attend. For more information, search for “Conestoga Herb Guild” on Facebook.
“New Hope is a faithbased counseling center, and part of our goal is to help our neighbors become healthier, one person at a time,” Riddell said. “Our counselors do valuable work every day. It may not always be seen, but there’s a lot of hurt and a lot of healing to be done in the community.”
This is the fourth year New Hope has held a small plate-style fundraising dinner. At first, the organization hosted an annual banquet to benefit its programs, but it modified the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2020, the fundraiser was adapted to feature a drive-through donation drive, after which New Hope began hosting a small plate dinner and auction to attract community members of all ages. Last year, the event raised more than $30,000. This year, attendees are invited to bring clothes to donate to New Hope Community Closet, a thrift store that raises money for the counseling center. Bike & Hike will back COBYS’ good works
BY JEFF FALK
COBYS Family Services’ upcoming multifaceted Bike & Hike event is the organization’s biggest and most beneficial fundraiser.
“My favorite part is seeing everyone come together,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS’ director of development for six years. “There is a lot going on that day. But the beauty is that the participants can pick what makes the best sense to them. There are a lot of different options so participants can choose what they want to be a part of. It’s amazing to see a lot of different people.”
“The purpose of the event is to make sure COBYS can provide all of its services, day in and day out,” Stokes added. “People learn about all the things COBYS is doing.”
The 28th edition of COBYS’ annual Bike & Hike event will be presented on Sunday, Sept. 8, from noon to 3 p.m. at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event will fea-
ture three active options for supporters to choose from.
“It’s a very family-friendly event,” said Stokes. “The day itself is very fun and uplifting. It’s people deciding to go do something exciting and be a part of what COBYS is doing. People come with smiles on their faces. You’re helping foster kids; you’re helping to provide counseling services. It’s a relaxed day. We encourage everyone to join us if they can.”
The Bike & Hike event features a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at 12:30 p.m., a 10-mile bicycle ride that begins at 1:30 p.m. and a 3-mile walk that begins at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the rides and walk is now open at www.cobys.org. and can also be done on the day at the event.
The day’s festivities will be capped off by the event’s Incredible Ice Cream Celebration, beginning at 2:45 p.m. at Lititz Church of the Brethren.
A group of several hundred family members, community members and supporters are expected to attend COBYS’
Bike & Hike. Organizers are hoping to make $130,000 from a combination of the event proceeds and preevent fundraising.
“COBYS’ mission is important because all of us have times in our lives when we need assistance,” said Stokes. “Our mission is to find kids and families
in need of an extra set of hands and someone to walk alongside of. Kids are the next generation of society. We want them to go into their next phase of life with success.”
COBYS Family Services, which is located at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, was founded in 1979.

Bird club sets meeting
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The program will be “Ears in the Sky: Using Drones to Study Songbirds,” presented by Andy Wilson of Gettysburg College and his undergraduate students.
Uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, have now been widely used in ecology and environmental monitoring for several years. Wilson’s research program with undergraduate students at Gettysburg College aims to develop methods for monitoring bird sounds by UAS. His research shows that drones can be a highly efficient way of counting songbirds and other vocal species, and they can be quickly deployed to places that are difficult to access.
Wilson has been a birder since age 9, encouraged by his parents and an elementary school teacher in his hometown of Sheffield, England. After working with the British Trust for Ornithology for 10 years, Wilson came to the U.S. to attend graduate school at Penn State University, where he earned a doctorate in ecology. He was data analyst and lead editor of the “Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania,” and he chairs the steering committee for the third edition of the book. He also serves on the Maryland/District of Columbia Records Committee, and he is chair of the environmental studies department at Gettysburg College.
The program is free and open to the public. To learn more, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717. Information about the LCBC is available at www.lancasterbirdclub .org, www.facebook.com/ lancasterbirdclub, and www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.

The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 and Friday, Sept. 13, as well as from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 14. This year the big white tent will be on the other side of the Mennonite Life building.

pretzels and lemonade will be available for purchase as well.
The sale will feature daily deals. On Sept. 12, Mennonite Life members will receive early admission an 8:15 a.m. Membership must be current and will be confirmed before early access is granted. To become a Mennonite Life member, visit www. mennonitelife.org or call 717-393-9745.
On Sept. 13, a special offer will allow shoppers to buy five books and get one for free. On Sept. 14, all books will be half price, and people may fill a box for a set fee.
Help The Fight
will be sold, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 14. Each table will seat a maximum of eight guests. Registration forms are available online at www.helpthefight.org.
To receive a copy of the registration form via email, contact helpthefightnow@ gmail.com.
The banquet will include a buffet dinner and a benefit auction. Items available to bid on will include designer handbags, weekend getaways, artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, toys for children, furniture, gift cards from local restaurants and services for homes and families. Separate tickets may be purchased with cash to participate in various prize drawings held throughout the evening.
A prize drawing for a cash reward will take place to celebrate the event’s 15th anniversary.
Every year, the items included in the banquet’s auctions are donated by various local businesses and individuals in the community. Anyone who wishes to donate items prior to the banquet may contact Help The Fight’s office via email or by calling 717-455-7095.
“We’re inviting members of the local community to join us as we celebrate 15 years and raising $1.2 million for cancer patients in Lancaster County,” said patient coordinator Susie Dailey. “The generosity of our supporters allows us to continue our mission to help people throughout the community in need.”
Although Help The
Fight’s annual fundraiser has evolved to incorporate a banquet and auctions, the event always includes a bake sale to remember its humble origins. Lynda decided to make the first fundraiser a bake sale to enable local residents to support the cause regardless of their income levels. “I think many people have rallied behind us because the money we raise stays in the community,” Dailey said. “Our board of directors is also totally volunteer-driven, and everyone feels passionately about the cause.”
The funds raised from the annual banquet directly benefit breast cancer patients in the local community. Help The Fight provides Lancaster County residents with what the organization calls gap funding, which entails financial support to help recipients pay for household bills as well as medical expenses. Many Americans’ insurance benefits are provided by their employers, and breast cancer patients often lose their insurance while undergoing treatment because their treatment prevents them from working fulltime.
Help The Fight is always accepting volunteers to help with events and to raise awareness of its mission to support breast cancer patients. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the office or visit Help The Fight’s main location at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville.

GMTRC is serious about horsing around
BY JEFF FALK
For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.
The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.
“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”
“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”
Located on 30 acres at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, inactive seniors,
even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.
“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”
GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.
“We love and rely on our horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard of us, but they really don’t know what we do. If people come out, we find that they fall in love with it. We serve a broad scope of our community. Everybody knows someone who can benefit from our services.”
Supported by a pool of 150 volunteers, GMTRC employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time.
GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.
“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”
Financed through donations, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.
“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”
