EPC will celebrate 70th anniversary with community event

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy, and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at its facility at 1100 Corporate Blvd. in Lancaster. Refreshments will be available to purchase from food trucks such as Auntie Anne’s, Cupcakes by Casey, Tri-County Barbecue

and Homage. Guests may enjoy complimentary ice cream from Kreider Farms while supplies last.

Live entertainment will be provided by Blessing & Fowler from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Comprising musicians Zach Blessing and Nate Fowler, the duo performs soulful tunes and classic hits throughout central Pennsylvania. The event will also feature a live broadcast from WJTL from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and local mascots Johnny from Achenbach’s Pastries and Cylo from the Lancaster Stormers will make an appearance.

The open house will feature a variety of yard games and activities for children, including face painting and balloon twisting, and Cherry Hill Orchards will provide pumpkins for kids to decorate.

The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, many students in Lancaster

County were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day. Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive

When you’re young, the world is full of adventure. Children’s imaginations can make digging holes in the yard feel as exhilarating as an archaeological dig, and with some creativity and a few sticks of sidewalk chalk, a driveway can transform into an intergalactic space vessel. Many adults grow out of the tendency to explore the wonders of everyday life that was enjoyed by their younger selves, but Adam Zurn, a local teacher and real-life adventurer, is an exception.

several prize drawings during the open house, and prizes will include items and experiences donated by local businesses such as an espresso machine from Martin Appliances and a zip lining experience from Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center. The prize drawing will also feature tickets to local attractions such as American Music Theatre, Field of Screams, Decades

and Go ‘N Bananas.

Attendees will have an opportunity to look behind the scenes at EPC during a self-guided tour of the plant, which will offer a close-up look at each department and how the company’s publications, including weekly newspapers, are made.

Multiple community organizations and local first responders will

be present at the open house, including a firetruck from West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, an officer from East Hempfield Township Police Department and the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club. Representatives from local chambers of commerce serving Lancaster, including the Lancaster Chamber, the Mount Joy Area Chamber, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber and Northern Lancaster County Chamber, will also be in attendance.

“In the third generation of this company, it’s important for us to continue the legacy of what was started,” said Jocelyn Engle, EPC’s publisher. “It’s all about supporting local organizations and understanding what serves our communities in each area.”

The Military and First Responders Ministry of Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, will host a veterans’ benefits question-and-answer event on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m.

The speaker will be Corey Bender, Pennsylvania representative for federal and state veterans’ benefits. Light refreshments will be served.

special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts. Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers can be now found in nearly every school district in the county.

UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year, and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”

This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and sponsors. In addition to the funds raised by the golf outing and local sponsors, UDS relies on numerous volunteers to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog must complete a 22-month training process, and volunteers assist by walking dogs and taking them home for a weekend to get a break from the kennel. “I can’t overstate how important volunteers are. Without them, we can’t bring in new puppies and they don’t get enough socialization during training,” Breece said. “We’re always looking for people to help with whatever they can, even if it’s just walking a dog for an hour. There’s no commitment.” For more information or to learn how to become a volunteer, visit https://udservices.org.

Uncharted Lancaster

and a technology education teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. But when Zurn is not in the classroom, you can probably find him exploring nearby historical sites off the beaten path or organizing competitive treasure hunts via his website, https:// unchartedlancaster.com.

In April, more than 700 history buffs participated in Uncharted Lancaster’s fourth annual treasure hunt, which entailed a five-week quest to find a statue of a golden osprey. During the game, teams of treasure hunters worked together to answer riddles and to solve puzzles related to local history, slowly uncovering the coordinates of the statue and a cash prize. The annual scavenger hunt also serves as a fundraiser; this year, it raised around $4,200 for the Historic

Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and roughly $500 for LancasterHistory.

In addition to organizing the annual treasure hunt, Zurn offers a list of adventures on the Uncharted Lancaster website. Each adventure takes participates to historical sites, caves and ruins found throughout the Southern End and other remote parts of the county to discover prizes. Uncharted Lancaster’s adventure page also features “side quests,” scenic destinations that offer a hike on a beautiful trail as their reward. The adventures are self-guided, but Zurn tests each one before he publishes it on his website along with recommended provisions and a fedora rating to denote how difficult the route is; one fedora indicates an easy hike, while five fedoras warn adventur-

ers to be ready for a challenge.

“I think a lot of people - including myself - neglect our own local history. You take things for granted when you grow up around them,” said Zurn, a native of Susquehanna County. “Being a transplant in Lancaster, I’m always asking questions that make me want to peel back the layers and learn more about the area.”

Zurn has always had a love for history and an adventurous spirit, part of which he credits to watching iconic treasure-hunter movies such as “Indiana Jones” and “National Treasure.” But the idea for Uncharted Lancaster started in 2018, when Zurn had a conversation with a co-worker about his dog-walking routine.

Zurn shared some of his favorite places to walk his golden

retriever, including the Enola Low Grade Trail and Shenk’s Ferry, and his co-worker asked if he had ever visited the old cemetery nearby. With only a few details and vague information about the graveyard available online, Zurn spent several weeks combing through the area until he discovered the elusive location, which contained gravestones dating back to the 1700s.

“It became a recurring thing in Lancaster; Google has no idea about these places, so I decide I’m going to find it,” Zurn said.

Zurn said he’s already prepping for next year’s treasure hunt, which will entail a quest to find the lost treasure of the Buzzard Gang of the Welsh Mountains.

For more information, visit https://unchartedlancaster.com.

The funds raised by the event help UDS cover the training costs for service dogs placed in schools and homes throughout the county.
