Worship event will encourage unity
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe fifth annual Reverberate worship night will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The free event will be held at the park’s outdoor amphitheater from 4 to 8 p.m., and it will feature live music, food trucks and worship activities from multiple local churches.
Multiple food trucks will be stationed beside the amphitheater, including Lickity Split, Chellas Arepa Kitchen, Blazing Swine BBQ,
Cabalar, Halo’s Eatery and Walk-O Taco. Throughout the evening, bands will provide praise and worship music on the stage, and churches such as Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, Reality Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Bright Side Baptist Church will offer worship activities.
Water Street Mission, located in downtown Lancaster, partnered with multiple churches in Lancaster County to create Reverberate in 2019. The nonprofit’s primary goal was to promote service to the church, which is one of its corevalues. The See Reverberate pg 3

CMBC welcomes new youth pastor
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Josiah Reimold of Peach Bottom was playing football at Solanco High School and being coached by a staff that included Chris Lenhart, pastor of Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise, Reimold probably had no idea that he would one day work alongside Lenhart as part of the church’s ministry team. However, it was in high school that Reimold first felt the call to go into youth ministry.
“I felt the call halfway through high school,” recalled Reimold, who
grew up in Peach Bottom. “I went to Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren at the time with my family, and the youth pastor there got me into youth ministry.” After graduating from Solanco in 2019, Reimold headed to South Africa with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for six months. The first three months he took part in Discipleship Training School, and the next three he worked with a team that evangelized both in rural villages and in the streets of Johannesburg. “We worked a lot with schools and children, and it added fuel to the fire I had for See Youth pastor pg 5
prize drawings will be held throughout the day. The proceeds from food sales and prize drawing tickets will benefit several animal advocacy organizations, which will operate booths to offer information and collect donations. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet rescued dogs at a doggy kissing booth during the fundraiser, and each of the dogs will be available to adopt. A variety of the participating nonprofits serve the greater midAtlantic area, although organizations such as Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and Woerth It Hollow are based in the Southern End. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, specializes in the rehabilitation of small woodland creatures such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs. Woerth It Hollow operates a facility in Kirkwood to provide equine therapy services for individuals with disabilities while also rehabilitating injured or rescued horses. 5K will benefit Clinic for Special Children
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Clinic for Special Children, 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, will host its annual 5K run and walk on Saturday, Sept. 16. Registration will be available from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m. The rain-or-shine event will include a kids’ color fun run, a bake sale, a chrysanthemum sale and an awards ceremony after the race.
The route of the 5K will begin and end at the clinic’s facility in Strasburg, and it will take runners on rural roads between local farms, vineyards and scenic Amish properties. Participants may

run or walk the 5K, and the clinic invites runners of all physical abilities to participate. In the past, many participants have finished the race in wheelchairs or while pushing strollers. The kids’ color fun run will be held after the conclusion of the 5K.
The proceeds from the event will support the clinic’s variety of services, which it provides to families of children with unique medical issues throughout the area. The clinic offers its patients primary care and specialized laboratory services such as genetic testing.
The clinic began holding the annual 5K in 2018 as a way to raise funds and awareness for its services, and the event draws more than 300 runners every year. “One unique thing about the 5K is that it brings together all of the different communities we serve,” said Kelly Cullen, marketing and communications manager for the clinic. “We have Amish families and English families who come together to support us.”
In addition to supporting the clinic’s everyday operations, the proceeds from the 5K will assist the nonprofit with its latest expansion project. Last November, the organization began the construction of a new facility in Gordonville. The new facility, which is located on a 10acre plot of land located just off of Route 340, will be three times the size of the clinic’s current building. The expansion was necessitated by the nonprofit’s growing number of patients, and it plans to rent the Strasburg facility to a local nonprofit organization after the move.
The clinic hopes to finish the construction of the new
facility this coming spring and officially move its operations there by April 2024. When the organization first began to consider potential locations to relocate to, it created a map showing the locations of its patients’ residences to determine where it would be most accessible. Forty-four percent of the clinic’s current clients reside in Lancaster County, but it provides lab services throughout Pennsylvania
and surrounding states. For more information, visit https://clinicfor specialchildren.org.

first event was attended by more than 1,400 people from a variety of churches and denominations. In 2020, Reverberate was moved to a virtual platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was transitioned to Long’s Park in 2021 and has been held there since. Water Street Mission has partnered with 77 churches for this year’s event, and it anticipates more than 2,000 attendees.
“We’re super excited to bring together a lot of diverse congregations to allow the community to unite for a night,” said Matthew Clements, marketing director of Water Street Mission. “Our end goal is that people are inspired to go out and love their neighbors.”
Water Street Mission is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services to people in need throughout Lancaster County. Water Street Mission is centered around Christian values, and it incorporates Scripture into its many community outreach efforts, such as residential programs, a community food bank, career mentoring and counseling services. The organization also operates a health clinic that provides medical, dental and behavioral health services for people who are in need of critical care but unable to acquire it otherwise. Services are offered to those who are uninsured, underinsured or experiencing homelessness. Water Street

Solanco Fair seeks entries in baking contests
Four baking contests will return to the Solanco Fair this year - the Apple Pie, Angel Food Cake, Chocolate Cake and youth-only Cookies, Brownies and Bars competitions. All are open to Pennsylvania residents.
Community Blood Drive
The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest requires at least 60% of the pie filling to be apples and it is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF).
PA’s INCREDIBLE! Angel Food Cake contest is cosponsored by the Pennsylvania’s Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Pennsylvania produced and packed eggs are requested to be used if possible. Bakers should look for the PEQAP or Pennsylvania packaging dates on the carton.
The Homemade Chocolate Cake contest is sponsored by the PSACF. The entry
must be a layered chocolate cake and must be frosted. Both the cake and the icing are to be made from scratch, and the cake must feature chocolate or cocoa as the main ingredient.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred program sponsors the Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies and Bars contest. The goal of this contest is to encourage young people across the commonwealth to participate in Pennsylvania’s agricultural fairs by showcasing locally grown and produced products in their contest entries. All participants must be between the ages of 8 and 18. Each entry must include two PA Preferred ingredients; they must be clearly labeled on the recipe, but the packaging labels do not need to be included.
All baking contests require that recipes - listing all ingredients and quantities and the preparation instructions - be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of an 8.5-by-11-inch paper. On the back side of the recipe, the entrant’s name, address, phone number and exhibitor
number must be included.
The certified winners of these contests are eligible to participate in the state competitions at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January 2024 with cash prizes.
Also, new to the baked goods department this year is a Best of Show contest with cash prizes. There will be two winners in the adult categories and two in the youth categories. This contest excludes the four previously mentioned special baking contests, as they have their own sponsors and prizes. The best of show contest is sponsored by Maplehofe Dairy.
Entries must be delivered to the Solanco Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 19, between noon and 9 p.m. For more detailed information, refer to the fair premium books or www.solancofair.org in the “Solanco Fair Info” tab, in the “Fair Book/Entry Information” section under the “Home Produced Products/Dept. 15” category. For more details, contact cochairpersons Liz Henry at 717-330-0728 or Erin Kilgore at 717-341-8203.

youth ministry to work with those kids,” said Reimold, who returned to the United States in March of 2020 on the same day COVID-19 restrictions went into place. In the fall of 2020, he started studying at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), commuting to some in-person classes and taking others virtually. He will finish his degree in youth and young adult ministry with a minor in Bible in December.
A chance meeting between Lenhart and Reimold’s parents helped to bring about his internship at CMBC, which began in May.
Reimold has worked primarily with Jim Davis, pastor of administration and ministries. “(Davis) has helped me meet internship requirements and get adjusted to
the community,” said Reimold, who noted that the church youth pastor position was open when he began his internship, and Reimold became part-time director of next generations in late June.
In his new position, which will become full-time after Reimold graduates, he works with youths in grades seven through 12. Presently, the youths meet on Wednesdays from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. Activities include game time, lessons, snack, and fellowship. Among the monthly events are laser tag, a barn party, and a fundraising event to help fund the yearly mission trip in July.
Reimold is happy to be fulfilling his call. “I just want to show (students) the goodness and glory of God,” he
shared. “One of the reasons I got into youth ministry is because I know these years (of youth) are very important (in shaping) the years that lie ahead,” Reimold noted, adding, “I want to be able to help show them how great God is and how He is always present.”
Working with his former football coach is a plus, too. Reimold said he is looking forward to Lenhart performing the wedding service when Reimhold marries his fiancée in May of 2024.
Readers who want to learn more about CMBC, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, may visit https:// calvarymonument.org. Specific questions about the youth program may be emailed to jreimold@calvary monument.org.

Student, teacher, coach, principal
BY ANN MEAD ASHSeth Buckwalter, who recently became principal of the Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) middle school, has experience with LMS going back decades. Buckwalter attended the LMS New Danville Elementary campus in the Southern End as a child, and he went on to attend LMS middle and high school before heading off to college. In 2002, he returned to Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) to teach biology and anatomy and physiology, as well as serve as the basketball coach. Not only has Buckwalter been a student, teacher, coach, and now principal with LMS, he is also a parent - the father of three LMS students, one in sixth
grade, one in eighth grade, and one in 10th.
During the 2022-23 school year, Buckwalter spent part of each day working with the principal on administrative duties. The training helped him to segue easily into the current job where he continues to teach a few high school classes. “This is a really unique opportunity because the campuses unified, and last year was our first year all together,” remarked Buckwalter. LMS consolidated the Locust Grove and New Danville elementary schools with the LMS middle and high schools on the 95-acre Lincoln Highway East campus in Lancaster in the fall of 2022.
“For the middle school, it was a big transition because we were pulling different elemen-
tary and middle schools with different philosophies together,” said Buckwalter. “The focus is to continue unifying and giving direction so that the middle school figures out what it is (now) compared to the two middle schools that it was. That’s a journey.”
Buckwalter gave up coaching LMHS boys’ basketball following the 2023 season. “Last year, we had a successful year and a lot of fun,” he said.
The fact that Buckwalter went into education is remarkable considering that as a high school senior he told his mother he had “absolutely” no interest in teaching. However, by his junior year at Bloomsburg University, Buckwalter was reconsidering that stance. “I was a biology major,” he recalled. “I had a
semester where I had a bunch of labs, and I really didn’t like the labs.” At the same time, Buckwalter was tutoring another student, and he found he really enjoyed the

Animal advocates
Honey’s RAID and Fund-A-Bull Bulldogs in Rescue are groups that seek to raise awareness of issues such as puppy mills and dog fighting, and each group raises funds for medical grants for abused or neglected animals. Other featured rescues will include Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Angie’s Stray Foundation and Good Old Tails Senior Animal Rescue.
From Wednesday, Sept. 27, until the end of Whiskers, Wags and Wine, Britain Hill will accept donations of items from a wish list on its Facebook page. The list includes specific items that are needed the most by this year’s supported animal advocates, such as collars, cleaning supplies, dog crates, unopened food and treats and gently used toys. driveway of the vineyard, and they will be distributed to the nonprofits after the end of the fundraiser.
“This isn’t just a community event. It’s a call to action for animals,” said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill. “It’s a great opportunity to bring your family, bring your dog and enjoy the day. Anything you buy will contribute in some way.”
Helm created the fundraising event three years ago, inspired by her love for animals and her own rescued dogs. In addition to spreading awareness for animal-related issues and raising money for each organization, Helm said her goal is to assist their volunteers by donating essential items.

pre-concert lecture will begin 45 minutes before each performance. The concerts will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.
The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban
pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, who will also perform his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.
To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all
audience members to gather in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, LópezGavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.

REAL ESTATE at 12:00 noon 4 bedrooms; 2 bathrooms; modern kitchen; living room; full basement; attached 2 car garage; central air; heat pump; wood stove; deck; stove & refrigerator sells with house. property on 1.12 acres.
The Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA) organizes the event in collaboration with the 521 Club, a sober club in Lancaster, and local and regional health resources and treatment centers.
The festival originated in 2013, when the director of Lancaster County’s Drug and Alcohol Commission was approached by the Lancaster Barnstormers to find a way for the county to celebrate recovery and promote community education. A group of recovery advocates and addiction treatment professionals organized a
recovery countdown during the seventh inning stretch at a Barnstormers’ baseball game in Lancaster. A few local people in recovery were honored on the field, and families and friends gathered in the food tent near the right field for a barbecue. In the following years, Recovery Day grew to include more activities and became a stand-alone event rather than occurring in connection with a baseball game.
Through awareness, advocacy and access, LCRA seeks to encourage recovery within the community for those affected by addiction. LCRA also aims to eliminate the stigma of addiction so that local neighborhoods will become more welcoming to individuals and families working to sustain recovery.

Not just horsin’ around
BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Jennifer Rummel, the horse show held by Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), an organization that provides equine-assisted therapeutic activities to individuals with special needs, is mainly about inclusivity. “It’s a community event, and we encourage people to come (join us),” said Rummel. “Parents of children with special needs will tell you their children are excluded from a lot of things, but this is their event, and it’s wonderful when the community comes out and cheers them on.”
The GMTRC horse show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at GMTRC, 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Titled, “Eventing Extravaganza - an Equestrian Triathlon,” the show will include students demonstrating their achievements, a skilled horsemanship demonstration around noon, and food available by donation. There is no admission fee to attend, and on-street parking is available in the adjacent neighborhood. Plenty of parking is available for buggies as well.
The event, which has been held for more than a decade, offers about 35 participants an opportunity to showcase their skills and receive a ribbon. “There’s a proficiency element,” explained Rummel. “Classes are based on ability.” Rummel noted that students with limited core strength need help sitting on the horse and guiding the horse, but others are able to trot independently, so categories are arranged accordingly. In addition to performing for an audience, students spend time with other students at the event. “Most (lessons) are individual because (each student’s) needs are so unique,”
Rummel explained. “So, (the show is) an opportunity for students to spend time with each other.” The skilled performance will include a rider demonstrating dressage and jumping.
The event will include a fundraiser tied to fall-themed planters located around the arena and the entrance. Rummel explained that a GMTRC board member obtains the planters. “She decorates, and it looks beautiful,” said Rummel.
“Each one has a tag in it, and people can take the tag and buy the planter and then take it home,” said Rummel, who noted that in 2022, the planter fundraiser brought in more than $1,500. Food that will be available by donation includes hot dogs, pizza, baked goods, and beverages.
GMTRC stables 10 therapeutic horses with two more in training and offers classes to both children and adults with special needs or in other atrisk populations. A Silver Saddles program is also available for active seniors. Rummel is excited about a new program that will start in October. Heroes and Horses is a nocost, unmounted equineassisted intervention for frontline workers and first responders who have experienced mental health issues following COVID-19.
Rummel noted that the program is constantly looking for more instructors. “The demand is high, but our ability to meet that demand is (not as high) due to a lack of instructors,” she noted. More than 90% of participants receive some kind of financial assistance with lessons, and Rummel hopes the fundraiser will raise at least $25,000 to help alleviate costs.
More information about GMTRC may be found at www.greystonemanortrc.org.
