Practicing “The Best Of Times” BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

This year has contained uncertainty and disappointment, but Solanco High School director of bands Scott Weyman has adopted an optimistic perspective. “2020 The Best of Times” is the marching band’s production number this fall. “The concept of the show is that we, as a band, get to experience ‘the best of times’ when we have the chance to gather and perform together,” Weyman explained. “Our goal is for our performance to provide ‘the best of times’ for our audience as well.” This year’s band includes 75 student musicians and color guard members, a little larger than last year’s band. “(It) continues our trend of growing by a few students per year,” Weyman said. “This is despite having several students who opted out for the 2020 marching season due to COVID-19-related concerns.” Sean Keller is the senior drum

major, and Julianna Weiss is the junior drum major. The color guard student leaders are Jadan Forren and Alex Coble. The instrumental section leaders are Greta Plechner and Lexi Heisler, woodwinds; Zach Herr and Martin Stoner, brass; Kendell Beiler, battery percussion; and Danielle Bishop, pit percussion. The staff members include Karen Huber, assistant marching band director; Shannon Garver, color guard designer/instructor; Stephenie Zdrojewski, color guard instructor; Jared Drennen, percussion instructor; Matt Green, brass instructor; Ken Zimmerman, drill designer; and David Bailey, public address announcer. To prepare for safely running the marching band program, Weyman developed “A Comprehensive Guide to Restarting Marching Band Under COVID-19 Protocols,” which was adopted by the school board this summer. Band camp began on Aug. 10, and each day opened with health screenings for students and

staff members. All activities took place outside of the school building and with social distancing protocols in place. Everyone involved was required to wear face masks when passing each other or when interacting. Weyman noted that marching band shows have a standard fourstep interval, which is just over 6 feet, between individuals, so social distancing is inherent to that standard. This spring, anticipating

that the school closure and the restrictions that followed would eliminate crucial rehearsal time, Weyman reprogrammed the show, swapping out the originally scheduled music for arrangements of “Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing” by Stevie Wonder, “The Best of Times” by Styx, and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay. Typically, June and July are spent working on playing technique and ensemble music, while the twoweek camp in August focuses on

learning the drill, staging, and visual portions of the program. This year, the band met only in August. “Because I always strive to maintain a high degree of challenge for the kids via programming - which we have certainly done with ‘The Best of Times’ program - I felt it prudent to rethink the show to maximize what would remain of our summer preparatory rehearsal time,” Weyman said. Amber Pownall was one of the contestants for the inaugural Southern Lancaster County Fair Queen in 2018. When Lydia Fetterman won, Amber used the experience as a learning opportunity, worked on the areas where she had room to grow, and tried again in 2019. The second time, she was successful. “I’ve been going to the fair since I was really young. I thought it would be a cool experience (to be the fair queen) since I already loved the fair,” Amber said. “I wanted to show See Fair Queen pg 5

Ham Dinner To Support Haiti Mission BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

It has been 10 years since Providence Church members Jeff and Terri Swope became accidental missionaries. Jeff grew up in Haiti, the son of missionaries, and in 2008, he returned to the Caribbean island nation to use his experience in the construction industry to build an orphanage. “They didn’t have a plan for the older kids, so we went back (in 2010) and started a home for the older boys,” Terri recalled. The Swopes didn’t intend to create an official organization, but people heard about their efforts and wanted to contribute to the cause, so they formed CrossRoads

Mission Haiti and filed for nonprofit status in 2011. The organization’s outreach has grown from there to include church plants, a feeding program, school sponsorships, and medical clinics. See Ham Dinner pg 7

games will be dependent upon the football schedule and the interpretation of rules announced by Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. The Solanco High School marching band is a charter member of the Pennsylvania Marching Band Coalition and had originally planned to perform in three showcases. The first one, set for Saturday, Sept. 26, has been canceled. Weyman expressed a wish to perform at the remaining two showcases later in the season. He is also working on several alternative performance ideas and plans to announce details if they are finalized.

Creating a new show gave Weyman and his team an opportunity to try different styles and techniques. “(We explored) a few interesting staging considerations in terms of spacial management as well as in terms of the blending and mixing of voicing and timbral groups,” Weyman remarked. “Frankly, these are concepts that we will more than likely continue to explore into the future as a result.” The original show concept will be held over for consideration for the fall 2021 season, Weyman noted. Finding audiences will be vastly different this fall. Performances at football

tions to love it as much as I do.” Amber, a 2020 graduate of Solanco High School and a current veterinary technician student at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, has been showing dairy cows and dairy beef since she was a youngster. Amber and her mother, Betsy Pownall, live with Amber’s grandfather, Walter Pownall, on a farmette in Little Britain, where they raise heifers. The Pownalls previously lived on a dairy farm. When the herd was sold in 2000, Betsy kept a few cows that she had had success showing, and Amber now exhibits their offspring. The livestock shows are Amber’s favorite part of the Solanco Fair. “I know the kids put in a lot of hard work to get to that point,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see all the kids with their animals walk through the fair ring.” Amber was a member of 4-H clubs for beef, dairy, and dairy beef, and she was a four-year FFA member, serving the Solanco FFA chapter as chaplain and student adviser. She credited those experiences with helping her succeed in the fair queen contest. “I had some experience with public speaking,” Amber commented. “4-H got me out of my comfort zone. At the first meeting every year, you have to introduce yourself and talk about yourself. The dairy beef club had 100 members, and I had to get up in front of them.” The audience at the fair queen contest, which was held on the Saturday before the fair at the East Drumore Township municipal building, was small by comparison. “I wish a lot more people knew about the fair queen contest,” Amber remarked. “We didn’t have a lot of people at the contest watching. It’s usually just the families (who attend). It would be cool if we could get a larger crowd of people showing support.” With COVID-19 precautions, however, the public is discouraged from attending the contest for the 2020 Solanco Fair queen. The coronavirus also put a kibosh on Amber’s public appearances. She was able

turn to enter the show ring with her cows, alternate fair queen Rianna Green was in charge of handing out the ribbons. “If you have animals at the fair, make sure you have lots of help,” Amber recommended for future fair queen contestants. “The dairy show was split up over two days. I had to have a lot of help to make sure things got done.” Amber offered additional advice for contestants: “Don’t stress out about it. If you don’t get (the title) your first year, you can try again.” And for the winner, she added, “Look at the events in the community … and see if you can be there. I didn’t have a lot of events to (appear at). We want to get the fair queen out there.” With the Solanco Fair essentially canceled this year, Amber is feeling the loss. “I’ll miss the people passing through the barns,” she said. “Just sitting with my cows, I answered a lot of questions (from visitors).”

A Letter From The Publisher It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. This won’t be for long. We anticipate this as a temporary measure as we navigate the next few months. See Letter pg 6

to participate in some events, such as the Christmas tree lighting for veterans in Legion Memorial Park organized by fair queen contest judge Randy Hart, the state fair queen contest, and a storybook reading at Providence Elementary School. During the shutdown, Amber tried to do a story time on Facebook but experienced technical difficulties. Serving as the fair queen was a good experience overall, she said. “Riding in the parade was fun. I enjoyed seeing everybody along the parade route,” Amber recalled. Amber balanced her fair queen responsibilities with exhibiting her dairy cows during the fair. She won the celebrity milking contest, competing against the reigning Miss Solanco, a retired physical education teacher, and two pastors. She also distributed the prize ribbons in the beef show, the swine show, and the tractor-driving contest. When it was Amber’s

Encounter Church Plans Seventh Car Show BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, has held an annual World of Wheels car show for six years. 2020 will be no exception. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. Organizers are expecting a higher turnout than usual and have been planning accordingly. “I’m mildly terrified that, with so many car shows canceled, we’ll wind up with 500 cars,” pastor Stuart Osborne commented. “We’ll just have to pray for very good weather (so we can park on the lawn).” The show usually attracts classic vehi-

cles, but everything interesting is welcome, as the motto is “if you want to drive it or push it, you can bring it.” Osborne noted that one year featured an 18-wheeler, and another year’s showpiece was a recreational vehicle. “One guy brings an old Plymouth pickup truck that hasn’t been restored. It’s the kind with a wooden box on the back. It’s one of my favorites,” he added. Typically, participants set up lawn chairs near their vehicles to hang out and answer attendees’ questions, or they walk around and talk with others. “We have a really good time,” Osborne remarked. “People enjoy it because it’s really laid back. It’s a community get-together for enjoyment.” See Car Show pg 7

Ham Dinner from pg 1 “When we started our first church, it was for our young men who were orphaned. There was a stigma around them, so we wanted (to establish) a church that they would feel comfortable going to,” Terri said. CrossRoads Mission Haiti also supports already existing congregations. “Our heart is really in the mountains, in places where you can only get there on foot. Now we have six churches under our leadership,” she added. “Our church plants are to continue the Great Commission of training and equipping our pastors so they can, in turn, minister to their members and give them hope in Jesus Christ.” The objective of the school sponsorships and feeding program is to protect and preserve families. This seems to be a new outlook in Haiti, Terri noted. “Instead of concentrating on orphanages, organizations are promoting family preservation and helping with programs to keep families together.” “Orphanage” is a misnomer, as many of the residents are children relinquished to the institutions by their families in hope of a better life. “Parents simply cannot provide, because jobs are lacking, (so) they don’t have the means to provide food or pay for schooling,” Terri explained. “Our Haitian director brings the needs of the people before us so we can help alleviate some of the financial burden of those in poverty, so the families can stay together and the children be raised by parents.” Until this year, the Swopes regularly visited Haiti, often taking skilled workers or medical personnel with them. The Haitian director identified areas where the teams could host medical clinics. Due to COVID-19 and civil unrest, Haiti is under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, so the Swopes have not been able to visit. However, they are still able to send money for the school and feeding program, albeit at an increased cost. CrossRoads Mission Haiti always hosts a buffet dinner fundraiser on the last Sunday in September at C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, 101 Fite Way, Quarryville. This year, the fundraiser will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but due to COVID-19 and the restaurant’s being unable to open fully, the meal will instead be offered as a takeout dinner. A price has been set for the dinners, with each ticket receiving ham, green beans, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, and a whoopie pie. “It’s not just your basic ham. There’s a distinct taste to it. It’s really good,” Terri commented. She noted that the meals will be distributed drive-through style. Terri noted that she’s a bit nervous about trying something new, but she is excited about the event. “(Restaurant owner) Christy Lapp has been wonderful. He wanted a way for (the fundraiser) to keep going,” Terri said. No fundraising goal has been set. “God takes care of that,” she said. “We have a great community and great support in this community.” Tickets for the dinner may be ordered in advance by visiting https://crossroadshaiti .org/benefit-dinner or by calling J.L. Swope Construction at 717-786-8745.

The church provides background music and free refreshments. There is no charge to participate or attend the show, but the organizers still receive offers of donations. In those instances, they usually suggest a charitable cause to support, such as an individual going through cancer treatments or Solid Rock Youth Ministries in Quarryville. This year’s beneficiary has not been selected yet. Community members are also invited to join Encounter Church for worship services on Sundays at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. Children’s ministry for nursery through fifth grade is offered during both services, See Car Show pg 8

Field of Screams, 191 College Ave., Mountville, began its 2020 season on Sept. 11. The spooky attraction will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, including Halloween night, through the second weekend in November. Events open at 6 p.m., with the exception of Saturdays in October when the site opens at 5 p.m. This year, the Haunted Hayride path has been modified to include a new attraction, The Chop Shop. Additionally, the S.H.A.D.E. Cryogenic Facility that was introduced last season has been upgraded for 2020. The Nocturnal Wasteland attraction has new effects, and new scenes have been added to the Den of Darkness and the Frightmare Asylum. Field of Screams features four haunted attractions with new scares in place for 2020. Due to COVID-19, a plan has been put in place so that they will operate safely. For COVID-19 policies, as well as information about purchasing tickets, readers may visit www.fieldofscreams.com. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/ fieldofscreams.

S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
