A few years ago, Southern End residents Brittany Spangler and her mother, Cathy Cornelius, were avid couponers. Carefully managing coupons and store sales, they were able to build up a stockpile of personal care items and nonperishable food. Eventually, word began to spread. “People see what you have, and they tell you, ‘So-and-So needs help,’ so we did a few benefits,” Spangler recalled. “We can help people fast.” The women were happy to help individuals and families who needed emergency assistance. In 2016, they “adopted” three families at Christmas, providing gifts and practical items for them. In 2017, that number increased to five, and last year, the number of families jumped to 10.
Zion United Church of Christ of New Providence, 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, will host a free community meal on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. Hot dogs, sauerkraut, and beef barbecue will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring a covered dish to share. BEGINNER LESSONS
DoPasO Square Dance Club will host beginner square dancing events on Mondays, Sept. 23 and 30, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. Simple instructions for Western square dancing will be provided. No experience is needed. There is an admission fee per person. For more information, readers may call 717-3944719 or visit www.dopaso.org.
“Our goal was seven, but we raised enough for 10 families,” Cornelius said. Spangler attributed part of their success to the followers of her Facebook page. “People are loyal,” she explained. “ W hen I post about a need, people give.” After seeing the growth of their generosity, Spangler and Cornelius decided to create a nonprofit organization. Along with their friends Daniella Falconio and Nikki Keys, they incorporated Southern Hope Foundation with 501(c)(3) status in May 2019. Spangler is president, Keys is vice president and treasurer, Cornelius is secretary, and Falconio is marketing coordinator. The Southern Hope Foundation primarily serves the Solanco School District. Spangler noted that she drives See Southern Hope Foundation pg 7

The CAFR provides information about the financial and economic state of the district. Copies of Solanco’s CAFR are available for public review. Readers may call 717-7868401 for more information. Bob Landis Jr., president of Leon C. Landis Inc., and his father, Bob Landis, are celebrating a milestone this month: the 60th anniversary of the elder Bob’s very first fuel delivery in 1959. On Labor Day weekend that year, Bob, who was just 16 years old and driving on a stamped learner’s permit, made his first fuel delivery to John and Joann Irwin at their home. While her husband has since passed away, Joann remains a loyal customer of Leon Landis Inc. To thank Joann for her 60 years of customer loyalty and to commemorate his first fuel delivery, Bob drove to Joann’s home himself to top off her tank for free. Bob Jr. also marked the occasion by presenting his father with a belated employee bonus. Company representatives note that during Bob’s decades of delivery to customers, his record has remained clear of any accidents. Unable to bring himself to fully retire, he will continue to serve the customers of Leon Landis by working in the office. Leon C. Landis Inc. is a 24hour full-service plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and fuel delivery company in Quarryville. Founded in 1950 by Leon C. and Martha Landis, the company passed ownership from Leon to Bob, his son, and is now owned by Bob Jr. The company serves southern Lancaster, southeastern
Everyone is welcome to attend. They do not need to live near the church. “Like Mr. Rogers used to say, you can be part of our neighborhood,” commented pastor Bob Haslam. There is no cost to attend the neighborhood gathering, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. “We just want to spread the love of Jesus,” said church member Vicki Foutz. “We’d like to meet people and encourage them in some way,” Bob added. The motorcycle rally and the neighborhood gathering will be held rain or shine. For information about the rally, readers may contact Saddle Bag Riders president Chuck Moore at 717-224-8790 or chuckmoore903@gmail.com. Inquiries about the gathering may be directed to the church at 717-872-6775.

donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. Road captain John Young reported that this will be the Saddle Bag Riders’ third ride. Last year’s event raised $300 for the Wounded Warrior Project. “It keeps getting bigger every year,” Young remarked. The ride will return to the church in time for the neighborhood gathering. Motorcyclists and noncyclists alike are invited to come to the church’s pavilion to relax and enjoy a meal of pulled pork, hot dogs, chips, cookies, ice cream, and beverages. Marshmallows for roasting over a bonfire will be provided. Attendees should bring lawn chairs, and they may bring games or enjoy the ones provided. Kim Ream and Doris Haslam are the coordinators of the neighborhood gathering. The church had held a community day for several years, but it had been discontinued. There was interest in starting it up again, but in a new format. “ We’re keeping it simple, somewhat oldfashioned,” Ream said.

ris played football for East Stroudsburg University. Hurley, a 1978 Solanco graduate, was the District 3 triple jump champion in 1975 and 1976, a fourth-place finisher in the triple jump at states, and the triple jump winner at the Shippensburg College Invitational, Dickinson College Invitational, and Ephrata Relays. He was the 60-yard hurdle champion at the Iceberg Olympics and set the Solanco freshman record in the triple jump (44 feet, 9.5 inches) and high hurdles (15.75 seconds). Hurley later served as an assistant track coach under head coach Art Harrington. “I (feel) honored to be included in an awesome group,” Hurley said of his selection for the Solanco Athletic Hall of Fame. “My time (at Solanco) was a wonderful time in my life, unforgettable. I give thanks to the Lord, my family, classmates, teachers, the community, coaches - especially coach Art Harrington - and,
of course, Solanco.” Little graduated from Solanco in 1974 and then returned to serve as the school’s wrestling coach from 1982 to 2018. He also taught science at Solanco for 35 years. As a student-athlete, Little was a district regional wrestling champion in 1974, and he earned three varsity letters in both wrestling and cross-country. At Millersville University, Little was a Division 3 All-American wrestler. Little’s career record includes 382 wins, 170 losses, and one tie. Little coached two state champion wrestlers, two state runners-up, and 18 wrestlers who earned district gold medals. Little’s teams finished third, fourth, fifth and seventh in states; were two-time District 3 champions and L-L League champions 14 times; and won the L-L League Tournament eight times. He is a member of the L-L League Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Solanco Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Award-winning quilter Cindy Carey will take students through her design process in the class “Quilting a Modern Quilt,” which will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. Althouse noted that this class might appeal to newcomers to quilting as well as those who would like more ideas on how to quilt the completed top. A small fee will be charged for admission to QSAM, and there will be an additional cost to attend the classes. Registration is required, as space is limited, and may be completed by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for the name of the class. The proceeds from the QSAM will be used to support LMQG programs and charity projects. Each year, the guild hosts several national speakers at events throughout the year; this year’s notable guests include Deb Grifa, Beth Reese, and Sherri Lynn Wood. The charity projects include making port protectors and mastectomy pillows for WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital Center for Women’s Health, lap quilts for veterans, placemats for Ephrata Meals on Wheels, and fundraising quilts for the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice & Community Care, and the Penn Manor Education Foundation’s Strong and Healthy Families initiative. The LMQG typically meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville. Some months, the meeting is held on a Saturday if the speaker is also doing a workshop. For more information about the QSAM or LMQG, readers may visit the Facebook page or email lancastermqg@gmail.com.

Manor Road, Lancaster. Readers familiar with the LMQG may recall the annual bazaar that the group previously held. “We changed the name the third year to better reflect our show of modern quilts that we have created,” explained LMQG director of events Sue Althouse. “We have vendors that are artisans
to appeal to everyone, not just quilters, hence the name Quilt Show and Artisan Market.” The vendors at the QSAM will include makers of pottery, wooden bowls and carvings, handweavings, glassworks, jewelry, clothing made from upcycled materials, and more, as well as several with quilting/sewing supplies and vintage buttons. Photos and information about the vendors are being posted on the LMQG Facebook page throughout September. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/Lancaster MQG to view the posts. Althouse noted that some vendors will only accept cash. The QSAM will offer opportunities to win gift baskets, large and small quilts, and a new Bernina sewing machine. The winning tickets will be drawn between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Bucky’s BBQ food truck will be on-site, selling meatbased and vegetarian dishes, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Groff’s Candies and Sugar Goddess Patisserie will sell a variety of sweet treats. Additionally, the QSAM will include a display of quilts made by LMQG members and two quilting classes taught by LMQG members. “We added classes because one of our goals is to educate and share our knowledge (and) talents with others,” Althouse said. “Sew You Want to Create a Modern Quilt” will be taught by LMQG past president Kathy Dunkle from 9 to 11:30 a.m. “(It) may appeal to those who are new to modern quilting or those who would like to stretch themselves with new ideas in creating a modern quilt top,” Althouse said. “Participants will be sewing with Berninas supplied by Hinkletown Sewing, one of our vendors.”

Tim Tebow was a beloved college football champion, Heisman trophy winner, media sensation, and best-selling author drafted in the first round in 2010. He had a miracle playoff run with the Broncos before being traded to the Jets. After one season, he was cut. Next, he was signed by the Patriots then let go after training camp, a scenario that repeated itself the following summer with the Eagles. Tim Tebow has achieved big victories and plunged the depths of failure, all while never letting go of his faith, even in the face of doubt and disappointment. He’ll share why neither the highs nor the lows of his life can define him—and how you can find confidence and know who you are.

Davis (1 ace) also dished out seven assists with Kate Unger putting up three while Anya Fisher (2 blocks) and Canale each served one ace. On the road one night later, the Mares suffered another 3-0 loss, this time to Lebanon, 25-12, 25-23, 25-12. “Another tough loss but the second set was great!” said Cross. “And we had several good, long volleys in the match that showed the true potential of this team. Unfortunately, unforced errors were the downfall and some unexpected injuries found us with a new lineup, once again.” At the net, Molinarez was tops with three kills and Canale and Fisher had three blocks each. Nicole Bowman and Unger each recorded two assist, with Maggie Perry leading the way with five digs and Photo by Mona Steinhauer Quinonez serving up three aces. Molinarez and Dow finished with three kills each, Perry recorded one assist and Fisher was 25-12 second set and then pulled away late for a 25-17 third set win. “The girls didn’t give up,” said head coach Meghan Cross. “They kept fighting and pushing for points. Emma Canale (5 blocks) and Jada Dow (3 kills) played great at the net. We are putting up blocks and attacking the ball. Between injuries and tweaking our lineup, things are com-
tops with two blocks. TENNIS At home three times last week the tennis team went 2-1. Monday they picked up their second win and second shutout with a 70 result over Lebanon. Faith Redcay and Olivia Baker partnered for an 8-1 doubles win while Perla Benitez and Sidney Beyer won 8-3 and Michaela Brenneman and Sophia Stoltzfus followed with an 8-2 result. In singles play, Redcay secured a 63, 6-2 win at No. 1, Baker scored a forfeit win via injury, Brenneman settled for a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3, and Stoltzfus outlasted Nevaeh Garcia 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. Some of that momentum carried into Tuesday, at least for Benitez who was instrumental in scoring in Solanco’s 5-2 loss. Benitez and Beyer earned a shut out at No. 2 and Beneitz followed that up with a 4-6, 7-5, 15-13 comefrom-behind win over Cassie Ginder. On Thursday the girls suffered a 6-1 loss to Penn Manor. Searching for their second win of the year, the tennis team traveled to McCaskey, Friday, Sept 6. But came home with a 5-0 defeat. Perla Benitez, playing No. 3, had the toughest match of the day. She won the opening set 6-4 but came up short 7-5, 10-8. FIELD HOCKEY Just four games into the season, the Mares sit in a three-way tie for second place with a 2-1 record. They are 2-2 overall. Solanco earned its second straight win last Tuesday with a 2-1 result over visiting Garden Spot. The Mares
struck first when Kayla McCauley’s cross toward the cage on a corner was tipped in by Mariah Stoltzfus at the 22:52 mark. That lead held through the first half. “We knew they would come at us in the second half and they did,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. Spot netted the equalizer in the 26th minute but the momentum didn’t last long. Solanco countered with a goal by Kierra Laird less than a minute later and denied the visitors after that. “I thought the team did a great job spreading the field and working in pairs,” said Hawkins. “Freshman Kate Underwood did an excellent job in reading the redirection of the play to open space and Mylee Smith had great block tackles and double teams to gain possession and made a lot of carries up the sideline. Emma Curtis also played well, cutting into the space needed. “A lot of things we’ve been working on finally clicked,” she added. “We still have a lot of work to do but it’s exciting to win two in a row and to see the girls perform the skills we work on in practice.” In one of their biggest challenges of the season, Solanco hosted Section Two powerhouse Donegal on Thursday. Kiera Baughman netted two goals for the Indians who prevailed in a tightly contested 3-1 win. “They have probably scored 10 or more goals on us each time we’ve played over the last two years,” Hawkins noted. “This was a competitive battle. We has some cross-
ing opportunities, two or three, but didn’t execute.” Maggie Hirst’s second half goal provided momentum as the Indians pushed out to a 3-0 in the second half. “That goal came off a corner,” Hawkins recalled. “We were driving on the pads and Maggie picked up a rebound and popped it in. I’m excited to play them again, even though it will be on their turf.” Kimmy Beacham recorded seven saves. GIRLS’ SOCCER The lady booters opened Section Three play on the road last Wednesday night against Octorara. Arianna Sieberlich’s first half goal proved to be the difference as the game was shortened due to weather. “It was an even battle in that first half,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “We caught a break in the eighth minute when a clear came rolling out to freshman defender Arianna Sieberlich who booted the ball back into the box. We all watched the ball sail right over the keepers head! “The game was ruled official four minutes into the second half due to lightning strikes.” Solanco sits at 4-2 overall. The Mares rounded out their non-league schedule with a 1-0 loss to visiting Garden Spot, Sept. 7. In a game that featured a combined six corners and 14 shots on goal, Solanco gave up the game-winner just six minutes into overtime. Dolan, with five saves, had four less than Spot keeper Marissa Spacht.

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition played on Jeet’s home course,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “Although Logan had a triple bogey 7 on the fifth hole, he continued with consistent play.” Also counting for the Mules was Andy Teaman (87), Greta Plechner (102) and Jeffrey Martin (111) while Anna Sexton (114) and Andre Mohler (118) also competed. “Andy carded his second best score of the year which is a good sign with the league tournament a couple weeks away,” he continued. “Greta shot her best round ever in high school competition, and Jeffrey, playing in his second school tournament,
was able to card a birdie 3 on the par 4 seventh hole. Anna continues to gain experience and Andre completed his first ever 18 holes in high school competition with a respectable score. “Overall, that 377 was our second best of the year and was 23 strokes better than we had last year at Honeybrook,” he concluded. BOYS’ SOCCER After opening the season with a 4-1 win over Kennard-Dale, the boys’ soccer team has struggled to find the back of the net. Over the next five games they have given up 20 goals but were only shut out twice. At the Hamburg Tournament on Sept. 7, the Mules dropped a 1-0 final against the hosts and then lost a 4-3 overtime thriller against Kutztown. Luke Snyder, Wilber OlivaresHerrara and Sean Salisbury kept Solanco in striking distance. The Mules were hoping to use that offensive momentum in the Section Three opener last Tuesday against Octorara. The Braves, however, scored three goals in each half en route to a 6-1 win. Nick Cozzone’s goal with 7:48 left in the first half prevented the shutout. CROSS COUNTRY A win is not always indicated by the final score. The harrier teams traveled to Hempfield last Tuesday and both squads came away with losses to Hempfield, Ephrata and Elizabethtown. But all was not lost. “We preach that ‘success comes to those motivated to get the most from their talent through the opportunity and direction they seek,’” said head coach Craig Ausel. “The team took another step forward in understanding these words. They competed with all of their ability and we saw huge success in our narrow losses to E-town and Ephrata.” Anthony Solis-Morales ran his very best race with an 8th place time of 17:24. “He came within inches of catching Ephrata’s top runner at the line,” said Ausel. Avery Jacobsen ran 18:10 and finished in 20th place while Tate Fisher, who ran a giant final mile to catch E-town’s No. 3 and 4 runners, was 22nd in 18:10. “Nathan Eller Photo by Mona Steinhauer Kate Unger makes a set for the Golden Mares during their non- (25th, 18:28) worked with Tate in league battle with Lancaster Catholic last Monday in Quarryville. the final mile to pass E-town’s No. 4
and lost a finish line dash to their No. 3,” Ausel noted. “These seniors demonstrate what coach Harrington meant by running with ‘intensity, courage and love’ for their team.” Sean Keller ran his best race of the season at 19:28 and Joey Hartigan finished at 19:49. “It’s hard to imagine that a 27-30 loss to Etown could be a success but our team learned so much and should be able to move positively forward to compete with even stronger intensity,” Ausel added. “For the girls, our goal was to be as competitive as our talent and hard work would allow and we did that.” Daria Neaves finished in 8th place in 21:07. Emma Baxter (17th, 22:39) and Nicole Dodson (18th, 23:01) broke the top 20 and challenged E-town’s No. 4 and 5 runners. “Chesley Ledesma and Elaina Kreider made huge strides in moving up to the low 24 minute range as our 4th and 5th runners,” Ausel said. FOOTBALL On the heels of a 27-21 thriller at Kennard-Dale, and after dropping their season-opener 55-35 against Northeastern, the football team improved to 2-1 with a solid 21-10 outing at New Oxford, Friday, Sept. 6. The Mules gave up all ten of those points in the first quarter but responded with shutout defense for three quarters and settled for a pair of touchdowns to earn the win. After giving up a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter, Solanco responded with a 98-yard kickoff return by Mason St. Clair, who intercepted D1 recruit Brayden Long twice in the second half. The Colonials went back in front with a 76-yard touchdown pass and were poised to score again late in the first quarter but a fumble on the Solanco 7 gave the Mules possession to start the second quarter. That quarter resulted in a 23-play, 93-yard drive that lasted nearly the whole frame and ended with Grady Unger’s QB sneak. Unger finished with 131-yards on 21 carries with Nick Yannutz, who scored the final TD of the game, a three-yard run in the final quarter, leading the way with 133 yards on 22 carries. Leading the second-half shutout on the defensive end was Chad Carter with seven tackles. Seth Harnish added three and recorded one of Solanco’s two sacks on the night with Nate Neuhauser claiming the other. New Oxford managed just 18 yards and two of their six first downs after intermission.

Special Lecture Series Posted Susquehanna National Heritage Area will offer its new Underground Railroad lecture series at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. All lectures in the series will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Underground Railroad was a system developed before the Civil War to guide slaves to freedom. The system was expansive, highly secretive, and dangerous. Pennsylvania had a unique position along the Mason-Dixon Line. It was a free state with a large free African American population and strong abolitionist fervor. Columbia was a major station in this network to freedom. A major transportation hub, Columbia could shelter and send fugitive slaves many different directions. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, author Scott Mingus Sr. will speak on “Slavery and the Underground Railroad in York County” and the events that led to the origins of the Underground Railroad in York County. He will focus on the growth of abolitionism in the county and resistance to it, as well as discussing leading conductors in the free black community, the Society of Friends (Quakers), and the Scots-Irish and German-Swiss population. The lecture is based on his book “The Ground Swallowed Them Up: Slavery and the
Underground Railroad in York County, Pennsylvania,” which will be available for purchase and autographs. Daniel Ness will present “ Wade in the Water: Underground Railroad Crossings Along the Susquehanna” on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Attendees will learn about the persons and places near the Susquehanna River in York and Lancaster counties, including how, when, and where they crossed the river. Dr. Leroy Hopkins will present “Marching to Zion: African Americans in Lancaster County and the Anti-Slavery Campaign” on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Hopkins will share the rich history of the Underground Railroad in Lancaster County while highlighting the better-known and lesserknown African Americans who played a vital role in the struggle to end slavery. There is a cost to attend each presentation, with a discount for the entire series. Seating is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration is available through the event calendar at www.susquehannaheritage.org or by calling 717-449-5607. Proceeds will benefit the operations and programs of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. For more details, readers may also contact Columbia Crossing at info@columbiacrossing.org.
World War II Club To Meet The World War II Oral History Club will feature Germanborn Hermann Pfisterer, who experienced life inside the Third Reich, at its next meeting, set for Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. The club meets at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, on

GOLF On the links at Honeybrook last Wednesday, the Section Two golf teams finished pretty much as predicted. Warwick earned the top score (341) with Ephrata (349), Garden Spot (350), E-town (352), Solanco (377) and CV (459) rounding out the finishes. For the third time this season, Logan Wagner was the low medalist of the day, carding a 77 to finish ahead of Ephrata’s Jeet Patel and Garden Spot’s Adam Hershey, both shot 79. “With one tournament left, Logan leads the section in scoring over Jeet but the final tournament will be

Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky,
a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-ofhearing nursemaid, played by Jennifer Shaffer. To make matters worse, Frederic’s apprenticeship was supposed to end on the day he turns 21; however, it is discovered that the boy was born on Feb. 29 in a leap year, meaning that he still has many years as an apprentice before he reaches his liberation. Frederic has fallen in love with Mabel, played by Katherine Lindsley. Moses Mariscal plays Mabel’s father, Major-General Stanley, who proclaims himself in a well-known song “the very model of a modern Major-General.” Neal Sheaffer will play the Pirate King, with Francisco Ortiz as Samuel, his lieutenant, and James Paxson as the Sergeant of Police. Cavod’s “Pirates” will be directed by Reji Woods, with musical direction by Michael Truitt and choreography by Jessica Rajski. Huyard said that the show represents an important era in entertainment history. “It’s kind of like the transition from operas to modern-day musical theater,” he said, noting that the comedy is technically an opera. “At the time, the term musical theater (didn’t exist).”
Caleb Zimmerman will play a pirate when Cavod Theatre presents “The Pirates of Penzance” on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29.

Calling the music beautiful, Huyard noted that the vocal parts are incredibly difficult. “It’s an operetta, so the female lead is singing stuff similar to what the female lead in the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ would sing,” he said, noting that he believes the cast has the background and musical ability to make the show a success. “(These cast members are) some of the strongest vocal talents we have had here,” he said. According to Huyard, the script mixes laughs with heartwarming moments and tops it off with the variety of songs. “The hilarity and comedy of the story is encased in this beautiful music,” said Huyard. “It’s hilarious, but it is also heartwarming.” He noted that the timeless themes appeal to people of all ages. “There is a beautiful love story, but there are moments where you just have to laugh at these characters,” he said. “Who doesn’t love pirates running around on stage making fools of themselves?” Huyard reported that cast members are having fun exploring their parts. “The characters are zany and off the wall, and playing a pirate is so much fun,” he noted, adding that the daughters of the Major-General are fun and quirky characters as well. Cavod’s stage space is limited, but Huyard noted that the show fits the accommodations well. “We will have a beautiful set with a dock of stained wood, fish nets, and other nautical themes,” said Huyard. Huyard hopes that members of the community of all ages will see the production. “The grandson who loves pirates is going to have a blast watching these pirates being chased by police officers,” Huyard said of the slapstick scenes that should appeal to children. “Adults will love it because of the beautiful music, so it’s a great family outing, but it’s also a great date night show because it’s a romantic comedy,” he added. “If you like pirates or if you love music, you’re going to love this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

corn boxes, free pumpkins, a petting zoo, carnival-style games, and other activities will be available for children to enjoy on both days. A tractor parade will make its way through the event grounds at 11 a.m. on Sept. 21 and at noon on Sept. 22. Live musical entertainment will be provided on both days. Breakfast will be available to purchase beginning at 7 a.m. on both days, and vendors will have additional food and beverages for sale throughout the event. An opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Sept. 21, and the youths’ and children’s fishing derby will be held directly following the opening ceremony. Youths and children age 15 and under may participate, but they must bring their own bait and fishing rods. Prizes will be awarded. Additional events on Sept. 21 will include the annual benefit auction, which will begin at 2 p.m. Auction lots are made up of a variety of donated items, including
wood carvings, farm toys, baked goods, and other homemade goods. Individuals may donate items for the auction up until the start of bidding. All proceeds will support the event and help to keep it free to the public. Organizer Ron Bernhard emphasized that the event runs on donations and any extra proceeds go right back into the community. A church service will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on Sept. 22, led by pastors from the churches in Conoy Township. The two-day festival began as a way to celebrate the heritage of the area, and it remains a community event to its core. Churches and civic organizations such as the Bainbridge Fire Company, Bainbridge Lions Club, and Elizabethtown Jaycees prepare and serve a variety of food and beverages for attendees to purchase. Local Boy Scouts assist with parking, trash, and crowd management. For more details, readers may find “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook or call 717-572-6144.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced an opportunity to apply for technical assistance for communities interested in revitalizing neighborhoods through development of local food systems. The assistance will be provided through the Local Foods, Local Places (LFLP) program. Local Foods, Local Places supports projects that create livable, walkable, economically vibrant main streets and mixed-use neighborhoods; boost economic opportunities for local farmers and main street businesses; and improve access to healthy, local food, especially among disadvantaged populations. LFLP partner communities work with a team of agricultural, environmental, public health, and regional economic development experts to set goals and identify local assets that can support the local food economy. Communities also develop an action plan and identify potential resources from the participating federal agencies to support implementation. Eligible applicants include local governments, Native American tribes, and nonprofit institutions and organizations proposing to work in a neighborhood, town, or city of any size anywhere in the United States. Communities with projects located in federal designated Opportunity Zones will

receive special consideration. Highest consideration will be given to communities that can identify how Local Foods, Local Places assistance will leverage the Opportunity Zone designation to support implementation of the resulting action plan. Since its launch in 2014, Local Foods, Local Places has selected 108 communities across the country to help develop local food enterprises, such as farmers markets, community gardens, and cooperative grocery stores, that improve environmental, economic, and health outcomes. Over the years, this program has been supported by several federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Northern Border Regional Commission, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Delta Regional Authority. To apply for LFLP assistance, readers may visit www.epa.gov /smartgrowth/local-foods-local -places-2019-2020-application. The deadline for applications is Monday, Sept. 30. Food Safety Course Set Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager and that such a person must be onsite at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift will need to be certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension is offering a ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, and 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11. The certification exam will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11. This in-person training, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants
learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. Participants who complete the course and pass the multiplechoice exam with a 75 percent or higher score will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. The set course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, as well as the exam, answer sheet and learning materials. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/servsafe or call 877-345-0691, with more information about the course available by calling Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851.
