You can find more than good reads at the Quarryville Library
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Everyone knows that libraries are the first place to check when researching a specific topic or looking for a new book to start reading. But most libraries, including the Quarryville Library, offer far more than a good novel.
The Quarryville Library recently received a grant from the State Library of Pennsylvania through Family Place, a program designed to help libraries expand to serve as a centerpiece for their communities. In 2008, the Quarryville Library became certified in the Family Place program, which requires it to offer components such as educational programs for different age groups as well as resources for families. The library plans to use the recent $2,500 grant to invest in items that will make its rooms more engaging for children, including interactive
sensory panels for kids to make art or to play with peers. Twenty percent of the grant will be used to refresh the library’s supply of backpacks filled with toys or items for infants; families are
able to take the backpacks home with them. “We’ll be able to add some cool things for children and their families to engage in without losing space for books,” said Sharon Roche, director of the
Quarryville Library. As a member of the Family Place program, the library also offers workshops to provide families with resources to help raise their children, as well as
enabling parents to connect with others to share their insights and ask questions. Many workshops include enrichment activities to supplement early education, and they are often attended by

Railfans and trainspotters show their love for locomotives in a variety of ways; some individuals enjoy traveling far and wide to see unique train cars with their own eyes, and others enjoy taking a local subway for the ride instead of the destination. One of the most popular pastimes among train connoisseurs is the assembly of miniature railroads, but these intricate displays are not confined to the safety of
the indoors.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will hold its 17th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The event will feature a selfguided tour of five stops located throughout Lancaster, including displays in Lititz and Manheim as well as a stop in Wrightsville. Each stop will highlight an elaborate, outdoor display of operating model trains in the homeowner’s yard or garden. A list of the gardens’ addresses will

Quarryville Borough recently kicked off its fundraising campaign for a community dog park it plans to build on the northeast side of the pool operated by the Southern End Community Association (SECA). The borough partnered with SECA to operate a booth at the organization’s annual Doggie Dip event Sept. 7, where committee members for the project offered information about the park and sold accessories to raise money for the project. While local residents’ dogs enjoyed a splash in SECA’s pool
to mark the end of the summer season, volunteers from the borough sold acrylic dog bones the pet owners could engrave with their family name or with the names of their dogs. The customized bones will hang on the fence after the new park is constructed. Supporters also bought T-shirts to show their enthusiasm for the project and took a peek at an illustration of the new dog park’s layout displayed at the booth.
Quarryville Borough Council member Susan Noel said the committee hopes to raise $25,000 for the project, and it will begin looking for contractors as it nears
The Quarryville Library will use a portion of a recent grant to install more interactive stations for children throughout the building.
Members of the dog park committee Rachel Ward (left) and Kelly Wyatt offered information about

Oasis sets fall Bible study
Participants in Oasis Women’s Ministry include (from left) Elizabeth Herr, Chelsea Statler, Deb Zook, Barb Musser, Holly Forrest, and Patty Wright.
Oasis Women’s Ministry of Pennsylvania will begin a new season of Bible study on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The group welcomes all women in the community to gather from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays through Nov. 20 at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.
The featured study will be “Seek First the Kingdom” by Christine Hoover. Through the Gospel of
Matthew, participants will explore what it means to belong to God’s kingdom.
The Bible study will include short videos, personal study lessons, and questions for small group discussion. Workbooks will be available for purchase at the first meeting.
The intention of Oasis is to provide a restful place for women to pause in the midst of life’s journey to connect
be available after a ticket is purchased to allow individuals to plan their route in advance. A volunteer from the museum will also be stationed at each home to share information about the museum’s programs and displays, and participating homeowners will be present to run their trains and to answer questions.
“Some homeowners incorporate
water features or landscaping into their models. One of the most interesting layouts this year moves through the natural habitat of the owner’s backyard,” said Railroad Museum program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “What we are always trying to do is highlight all the work people have put into developing these beautiful layouts. This hobby requires a lot of work.”
EMAIL: circulation@engleonline.com Mailed outside our circulation area for $36/year.
One might consider outdoor model railroading to be the extreme sport of the hobby. Individuals who design outdoor layouts not only need to navigate the landscape of their yards or gardens, but they also must consider elements of nature when building the model. Factors such as heavy rain, strong wind and curious local wildlife pose a threat to outdoor train models that indoor displays are protected from.
In the past, several local retirement communities have participated in the Garden Railways Tour. Myers said many model owners adapt their layouts to a new home after moving, which requires them to get creative with how they arrange the display. “It’s always neat to see people using the spaces they’re allotted at home,” Myers added. “Even if their living situation has changed, they don’t have to give up hobbies and pursuits they enjoyed in the past.”
A limited number of tickets are available to purchase in the gift shop of the Railroad Museum, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. Tickets will also remain available online until the start of the event. For more information or to purchase a ticket, visit www .rrmuseumpa.org.

the fundraising goal. The amount of the fundraising goal increased after the borough requested a paved parking lot for the park instead of a gravel lot, but construction will kick off once the committee has raised enough money to install the fence. In addition to running a booth at the Doggie Dip, the committee is continuing its fundraising efforts by contacting local businesses to offer sponsorships and asking community members for support. Noel added that the committee also plans to schedule more fundraising events in coming months.
“We’ve already gotten some donations from local businesses and residents of the area,” Noel said.
“We’ve received comments from community members about how great the dog park will be
and that it’s a wonderful thing from the borough. It’s great to see the support; we’re trying to give citizens a fun place to have their dogs play and socialize.”
The location of the new dog park, which will occupy an open space between the pool and Route 472, will offer local residents a fenced-in space to safely play with their pets and gather with fellow dog owners without worrying about passing traffic or potential safety issues in the woods. Noel and five other members of the borough council formed the committee for the project earlier this year after local pet owners voiced their concerns about having no place to let dogs off-leash. The dog park committee presented the proposed layout of the park to Quarryville

Borough’s streets, infrastructure and parks committee, and the project moved to the council in April after Noel conducted a survey to gather the public’s opinion. The survey yielded an overwhelmingly positive response, and the council held a town hall meeting to answer questions in June. Noel said the committee hopes to build the dog park before winter and pave the parking lot in the spring.
Community members may visit the Quarryville Borough office during its operating hours to view the concept drawing of the park. For more information, including details on how to make a donation, email office@ quarryvilleborough.com or call the borough office at 717-786-2404.
