Event will promote fellowship, community for Christian women
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Three years ago, Jennifer Forren of Quarryville organized Beloved, an event that was designed to offer women in the area a safe place to connect with one another and to strengthen the community. Despite having no sponsors or involvement from any local businesses, Beloved was an immediate success; over 100 women attended the event. This year, Forren will host Crowned, a follow-up event with the same goals of promoting bonds between local women.
“I’ve always had a desire to help women feel loved and accepted,” Forren said. “I never had that; I had to go out and find a support system of women. Now I want to give that support to others.”
Crowned will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at DOVE Rivers of Life, 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg.
Fair book cover contest highlights student artwork
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
As the Solanco Fair approaches every year, its annually published fair book is available in businesses throughout the Southern End. A new edition of the book is released to accompany each fair, and it provides a detailed overview of the event’s schedule, contests and other specific information. Although many of the fair’s details remain the same every year, the book cover always features the unique artwork of a local student. Each January, eighth-graders at Swift Middle School and Smith Middle School are invited to participate in a contest that will decide the fair book’s cover art the following year. Any student may submit a drawing, and the submissions are judged by a panel comprising art teachers and members of the fair committee. The art teachers analyze

The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and it will include guest speakers, activities, door prizes and Christian worship. Women age 17 years or older may purchase tickets to Crowned for a set price.
At 8:30 a.m., registration will open for the event and hot cocoa and muffins will be served, provided by the Daily Grind Quarryville. Throughout the day, three guest speakers will share 20-minute presentations, and activities will be offered at a variety of stations. Each activity is design to provoke thought in participants and encourage them to develop a relationship with themselves, their faith and other women. After a short worship session, pizza will be provided for lunch, donated by Dolce Vita in Quarryville.
“We want to get women thinking and really building a relationship with themselves,” Forren said. “It’s
a safe place to make new friends, become closer to Jesus and just have fun with your neighbors.”
Door prizes will be given out during the event, which will include items such as gift baskets, gift cards, hair products, coffee mugs and cookies. Each prize has been donated by a local business. “Businesses began to contact me after the last event and asked how they could support the next one,” said Forren. “It reflects the sense of community in this area, and it’s the reason why I started the event.” The door prizes will be items from businesses such as One Mission Coffee, Beauty Unveiled Salon, Thread to Hearts, Sparrow Heart Cookies, Wicked Panes and Jo’s Baby Cakes, among others. All of the room and table decorations for the event have been donated by White Peacock Rentals.

Arts & Culture Series seeks to broaden horizons
BY JEFF FALK
What a mundane existence it would be if everything were the same. Not only is variety the spice of life, but also diversity makes the world go round.
In association with Lancaster Bible College, the Trust Performing Arts Center’s ninth Arts & Culture Series is marked by diversity and variety and uniqueness.
The Trust Performing Arts Center recently unveiled its 2023-24 events for the spirited Arts & Culture Series. The 14 performances are a
collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible College’s school year.
Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances. “Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal arts this year.”

Maize & Snitz Fest planned
The community is invited to explore Lancaster County’s early indigenous and European cultures at the Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Visitors will be able to tour the home built in 1719 for the Herr Family and learn about local indigenous life at the Lancaster Longhouse. Also featured will be historical demonstrations, shopping from local vendors and food.
Interpreters and craftspeople will lead demonstrations throughout the day near the Herr House and the Lancaster Longhouse, offering insight into historic cultures, industries and art forms. Attendees will be able to visit the blacksmith shop, learn about gardening and medicinal plants, see a bake oven demonstration, learn about the craft of corn husk cordage and experience an interpretation of indigenous 18th-century life.
At the Herr House kitchen garden, visitors will be able to
learn what the Herr family may have grown on their homestead and what the museum grew this year. A full demonstration schedule is available at www.mennon itelife.org/events.
Specific activities for children will include corn husk doll making; a scavenger hunt with prizes; scherenschnitte, which is German paper cutting; and fraktur, a Pennsylvania German form of illuminated script.
Fruit from the 1719 Museum’s own orchard will be available for purchase as well as snitz fry pies, sausage sandwiches, apple dumplings, whoopie pies, apple cider and bottled water.
Traditional crafts at the artisan stalls will include fraktur and wood grain painting, important to 18th-century Pennsylvania German communities, and Native American pine needle crafts, finger weaving and drums. A woodworking vendor will
feature bowls and utensils hand-hewn from branches using traditional tools; another vendor will demonstrate the process of yarn dyeing, spinning and weaving.
An admission fee will be charged. There will be separate prices for adults and youths ages 7 to 14. Admission is free for children age 6 and under. The event will be held rain or shine.

was inspired by her grandparents, who participate in competitions at the fair every year. “I wanted to represent some of my favorite - and possibly less seen - parts of the fair,” Groff said.
“The Solanco Fair is a major part of the community, and it displays our area’s strong connection to agriculture,” said Mark Phillips, coordinator of the fair book cover contest. “The contest is a good way for kids to get involved and show off their art abilities, too.”
Phillips, a retired art teacher, often assists with judging the submissions. When looking at each piece, he evaluates the clarity of the lettering and shading of the drawings, as well as the interest generated by the subject matter. Groff’s drawing includes objects that are relevant to the fair and its season, such as squash, strawberry jam and an autumnal candle. “This particular design is a collage of
items, but what immediately caught my eye was the lettering,” Phillips said.
The fair book cover contest was started many years ago at the former Quarryville Junior High School. In the Solanco Fair’s early days, the cover of the book featured drawings from adults in the community.
Over time, the contest shifted its focus to include local students’ artwork to give budding artists an opportunity to showcase their talents. Phillips took over the coordination of the contest when he began teaching art at Quarryville Junior High School in 1972, and he continues to manage it in retirement.
The Solanco Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 20 through Friday, Sept. 22. All of the previous fair book covers will be on display in the Hoffman Building at the fairgrounds, located on Park Avenue in Quarryville.

Arts & Culture frompg
The Arts & Culture Series launched on Sept. 15 with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.
“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed,
Chanticleer
especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”
Also featured in the series will be the Alejandro Brittes Quartet on Oct. 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tianxu An on Oct. 28; Soul Sanctuary: Religious Spirituals on Oct. 29; performances
of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on select dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 16; the male chorus Chanticleer on Nov. 29; a masterclass dance festival taught by a local choreographer on Jan. 13; a local choreographer’s dance festival and showcase on Jan. 13 and 14; Piercing Word’s performance of “The Gospel of Mark” on March 1 and 2; a performance by soprano Samantha Hankey on March 12; an International Piano Festival concert given by Tanya Gabrielian on March 16; and a concert by the British vocal ensemble Apollo5 on April 5.
“Not only are our spaces beautiful, it’s also excellent artists and unique artists,” said Hoover. “That just makes for a neat experience. I love being able to bring so many wonderful artists straight to the people of Lancaster. It’s about introducing people to different genres.”
