SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVIII • NO 23
Same Mission, New Location BY COURTNEY MENGEL
hirteen years ago, Oak Hill Fellowship opened in Quarryville with the vision of sharing the Gospel with the Solanco community. Since then, the congregation has met in two different buildings before its most recent location at the former Zion United Church of Christ, 902 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg. However, that property was sold to another entity a couple months ago. Around the same time, the Mount Hope United Methodist Church congregation merged with Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, which resulted in a vacancy at the former Mount Hope building and new home for Oak Hill Fellowship at 75 Mount Hope Road, Quarryville. This merger was completed on Aug. 29, and Oak Hill signed the lease on Sept. 7. According to Oak Hill pastor Ben Miller, the entire process was timed perfectly.
T
“The fact that we can use this place for ministry to serve our community and our church members is a really important thing to us,” said Miller. “It’s a nice, central location to the people who are already part of our congregation but also to the area we want to reach.” Since moving to its previous location on Winter Hill Road, Oak Hill began reaching people in Strasburg, Lampeter, and Willow Street. People also come from Pequea and Holtwood. At its new Quarryville location, the congregation believes it can use the facility as a mission center for the church to continue reaching the Solanco area and beyond. “We believe at Oak Hill that the church is the people, not the building,” stated Miller. “No matter where we are, we are still here to serve both the people in our church and the people in our community the best way we possibly can. While big things are changing, the core of who we are is not changing.” See Oak Hills pg 3

A Solanco High School graduate, Hess has been involved with the fair for 23 years and currently holds the position of director of commercial exhibits - a role he assumed in 2003 during his second year as president of the Solanco Fair Board. As the commercial exhibits director, Hess has assisted in designing and

and Hardware store for 34 years. As grand marshal, Hess represented the fair and rode in the first vehicle at the parade. Having been a person who works behind the scenes for so long, Hess felt some hesitation about being in the spotlight. “I found out at the fair meeting,” explained Hess. “Someone made a nomination, someone seconded it, and that was it. I didn’t have time to think about it and say, ‘No, not me!’ But they’ve been after me for about three years.”

Funeral Home Groundbreaking Held Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory broke ground on Aug. 16 for its new project, its sixth funeral home location and third crematory, located in Willow Street. The new location is set to be completed and open its doors to the community in spring to summer of 2022 in the company’s 75th anniversary year. Family, friends, staff and community members recently gathered at the construction site on 2421 Willow Street Pike to witness the official beginning of the project.
Members of the Snyder family and staff, project managers from Benchmark Construction, Lancaster County officials and others kicked off the ceremony by sharing their gratitude and expressing their anticipation for the new journey. Shovels in hand, the Snyder family then broke ground. For more information, contact Chad Snyder at 717-4717921 or chad@snyderfuneral home.com. Learn more about the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes & Crematory at www.snyderfuneralhome.com.

Todd Long
Solanco inducted Emily Allport, Derek Jennings, Todd Long, Mark Musselman, Donald Sample, and Jack Sensenig into the Hall of Fame prior to the football team’s win over Muhlenburg on Sept. 10. Allport, Class of 2012, earned eight varsity letters, four for basketball and four for track and field. On the basketball court, she was a 1,000-point scorer and was part of three section title-
winning teams. She placed sixth in the high jump at the 2012 state track meet. She attended James Madison University, graduating in 2017 with a degree in communications and creative advertising. She currently resides in Colorado Springs. Jennings, Class of 2004, ran cross-country and track, earning four varsity letters in each sport. He was a fourtime first-team All-League cross-country runner, a four-
time top-five medalist at the league championship meet, and a four-time PIAA state qualifier. He set a number of course records and was part of two Lancaster-Lebanon League cross-country championship teams. On the track, Jennings set the record in the 1600-meter run and was a six-time league medalist, a 3200-meter run league champion, and an eighttime district qualifier in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Hess noted that he has stayed with the fair for so long because he enjoys being around the people. The daughter of Edward and Brandie Boos of Peach Bottom, Irelyn has been drawing most of her life. Irelyn submitted a design to the competition when she was an eighth-grader at Swift Middle School, and she noted that her art teacher, Mrs. Tucker, was supportive of her talent. Now a ninth-grader at Solanco High School, Irelyn noted that she tries to go to the fair every year and that the animals are her favorite part. “I wanted to incorporate one of everything in the design because that’s what the Solanco Fair is - it has one of everything,” said Irelyn. Irelyn received an award and a cash prize for winning the fair book design contest. Although she enjoys drawing, Irelyn said she does not want to pursue a career in art. Her goal is to become a mechanic.

“Who am I?” might be one of life’s biggest questions. Some people believe that getting to know themselves requires discovering their roots because knowing their history and culture helps them construct their individual identities. It can also enable them to build a sense of pride. One of the early advocates for a Mennonite historical society in Lancaster County was pastor and farmer Ira D. Landis. The first meeting of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was held in May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974. Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has hosted an annual Maize and Snitz Festival at the Herr House & Museum. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,

staff at the museum were able to take a year and a half to redefine the 2021 Maize and Snitz Market Fair. The idea for the upcoming event is to offer attendees a more complete understanding of what Colonial life would have been like for the Herr family. “This is part of the Herr family’s story, but this is also part of the story that related to hundreds if not thousands of people when they came to America,” explained Jason Stetler, digital and communications storyteller for the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. The Maize and Snitz Market Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the historic grounds of the 1719 Herr House & Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Attendees will have the chance to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous people of Lancaster County. For the first time, the rain-orshine event will feature artisans who specialize in 18thcentury trades. Professional tradespeople will demonstrate embroidery, tape weaving, baking, hearth cooking, Native American foods, and fingerweaving. People can shop for handcrafted items

Another two-yard dash and an eight-yard run extended Solanco’s led to 28-0 at the break. The hosts added two more third quarter scores to pull away. Mellinger broke free for a 96-yard run and later Josiah Forren’s interception and ensuing 86-yard return set up Brian Coleman’s three-yard romp to cap the scoring. Forren also anchored the defense with seven tackles and Cole Gladfelter added one sack. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team opened Section Three play with a home game against Donegal Sept. 10 but the result favored the Indians 5-1. Clint Grawe’s goal prevented the shutout. In Hamburg on Saturday, Solanco earned its first win, edging Schuylkill Haven 2-1 in penalty kicks. “Schuylkill Haven scored an own goal to make it 1-1,” explained head coach Brandon Smith. “Brady Janssen and Gannon Kilgore scored the penalty kicks while Ben Drumm saved four of the five PK shots taken.” That vaulted Solanco to the championship game where they unfortunately lost to Hamburg 1-0. “Happy for this group to get the first win of the season,” said Smith. “They get better every day.” TENNIS The tennis team, missing two players, suffered its first shutout of the season to Cocalico last Monday and fell 6-1 to Penn Manor one day later. They are 2-5 to date. At No. 2, Adrienne Dolan’s 6-3, 6-3 win over Erin Shipley prevented a shutout. Ava Peiffer, at No. 4, put up the best numbers of the week, winning nine games. GOLF Solanco moved to 18-1 with a 22-stroke lead over the rest of the section last Wednesday at Foxchase. Andy Teaman’s 79 was low score of the day with Logan Wagner one stroke back. Brayden Herr (87) and Nathan Tucker (97) rounded out the counters. Anna Sexton (101) and Hodson Brown (105) also competed. CROSS COUNTRY At Township last Tuesday the boy’s team held off CV 25-32 and beat Ephrata 19-38 before falling to the hosts 15-51. Anthony Solis and Wyatt Tomison finished 8th and 9th respectively with Avery Jacobsen in 14th. Jimmy Hartigan (21st) and Joey Hartigan (26th) rounded out the top five. “The guys ran great in the heat and executed the plan,” said head coach Andrew Musselman. “They will continue to improve.” The girls failed to field a full squad and suffered three losses. After taking a 2-1 lead, Solanco dropped the fourth set 25-23 and the final set 15-9. Jaidee Beam, with 7 kills and Trinity Erismen, with 6 aces and 5 assists, highlighted the offense while Karleigh Good’s 12 digs and Sophia Stoltzfus, with 7 blocks, were the standouts on defense. “We were up in the fourth set and didn’t close out. Unforced errors were the key in the fifth set,” said head coach Dillon Costrello. “Trinity Erisman and Madi Davis controlled the
offense the best they could. Sophia Stoltzfus and Martha Weaver were giving us good touches out of the middle, defensively, and libero Marissa Cannizzaro was solid defensively.” In tournament action on Sept. 11, Solanco slipped (25-15, 25-17, 25-18) against Dallastown and West Perry (26-24, 25-16, 27-25). At home Tuesday against L-S, Solanco battled but came up short in a tightly contested 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) loss. Davis put up six assists, five went to Anya Fisher for kills. Cannizarro added two aces, Kate Unger, Fisher and Alaina Herr each blocked once, while Karina Shaiebly recorded six digs.

For the past 31 years, the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) has preserved the history of the Penn Manor area. The CAHS was founded because of a change to the Lancaster County Historical Society, which discontinued collecting and housing artifacts and became a research and library facility. It was suggested that regional historical societies be formed, and the CAHS was the last to become an official nonprofit, volunteer-based organization. Currently, CAHS is governed by a 15-member board and has more than 330 members. As an ethnographic museum, CAHS shows the lifestyle of a particular group of people who lived in a particular area. As such, the museum consists of a complete encyclopedic history of the Penn Manor area with its collection of native rocks, minerals, taxidermy, clothing, trees, plants, and more.
With the exception of two years - last year being one of them - the CAHS has hosted an annual fall harvest festival since the organization’s formation. This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Ehrlich Park, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. There will be demonstrations and sales of crafts made by weavers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, pottery makers, rifle makers, and many more. People will be dressed in period clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries. Native Americans will set up teaching tables, and there will also be children’s activities, such as pumpkin painting and rope making. Vice president of CAHS Jim Kauffman noted that over 200 pumpkins were painted in 2019. “We have a rich cultural background, and it’s a matter of replicating it and sharing it

After realizing he had witnessed an incident of human trafficking in Philadelphia, Steve Thurston told his wife, Amy, about what he had seen. Steve and Amy decided they could make an impact on preventing human trafficking, so they moved to Lancaster and founded Hope. Inspire. Love. in January 2016. Hope. Inspire. Love. is an antihuman trafficking nonprofit that aims to provide education and opportunities for local residents to partner with the organization to help end human trafficking, paving the way for awareness, prevention, freedom, and restoration. The organization also provides education, advocacy, and a mentorship program for survivors of sex trafficking.

When Cara Scudner’s young cousin asked her to help with the Girls on Track team she had joined at Sacred Heart in Lancaster in 2013, Scudner was prepared. Having taken 5:30 a.m. jaunts with Back on My Feet - a running program for members of the homeless community - during her last year of college, Scudner signed on as assistant coach. Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in Leola during 2020. Scudner also set up a decorated 5K course for participants who lived near her home when GOTR’s spring 2020 event was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner
was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine. While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. Women In Tech Award Winners Announced Three local women were among the six Women In Technology (WIT) Award winners honored during a live virtual event held by the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania (TCCP) on Sept. 8. This year’s WIT Awards wrapped up a two-part virtual celebration of the fifth anniversary of TCCP’s continued commitment to celebrating women who are innovators, role models, trailblazers and inspirations within the technology community throughout the region. Opening remarks were offered by Ann Hughes, president and CEO of TCCP. Mary-Angela Kenney won this year’s WIT Impact Award Private Sector/Medium to Large Business. This award recognizes a woman in technology whose contributions have made a positive impact in the private sector/medium to large business market, which consists of companies employing 50 or more employees. Kenney is the vice president of innovation and technology with Fenner Precision Polymers in Manheim. Kate Gallagher won this year’s WIT Impact Award - Private Sector/Entrepreneurs to Small Business. This award recognizes a woman in technology whose contributions have had a positive impact in the entrepreneurial/small business sector, meaning companies that employ fewer than 50 employees. Gallagher is the chief operating officer with Advanced Metrics in Mountville. Melissa Wall won this year’s WIT Next Gen Award. This award recognizes an upand-coming young woman who is making a difference in technology in the region. Wall is a senior software engineer with Industrial Resolution in Lancaster. In addition to the six awards, WIT scholarships were awarded to Caitlin Colicchio and Clair Cuvo. Colicchio is a junior at Bucknell University and Cuvo is a sophomore at Elizabethtown College.
