Flamingo Fad Endures The Test Of Time BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
In 1990, 9-year-old Dayna Weinhold wrote about the absurdity of the flamingo fad.
“People involved in the (fad) go wild about these tropical birds,” the Locust Grove Mennonite School fourth-grader penned in rough letters. “Neighbors of mine have put

The Wakefield Lions Club has provided students and teachers at Swift Middle and Clermont Elementary schools, 1866 and 1868 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, with outdoor instructional space. Lions club members installed three of the club’s tents at the schools on Sept. 14. Swift assistant principal John Dolan said the tents will enable students who would have been in the gymnasium to instead have class outside, with the space necessary for social distancing. The tents are slated to be used for the next three months. “(They will be) outdoor areas that our students and teachers can use for outdoor learning environments,” Clermont principal Chris Zander said. “I’m excited for this opportunity and appreciative of our community’s support for our Wakefield Lions Club members set up tents for outdoor instruction at Swift and Clermont schools. students and schools.”

Athletic directors are working with their school districts on plans to livestream field hockey and soccer games when possible. The Solanco Athletic Department will work with the visiting team and compile lists of players, coaches and essential staff members who will be in attendance for contests on the Solanco campus. Those figures will be combined with Solanco’s own numbers to give an accurate count of essential contest attendees. Once an accurate essential personnel count is tabulated, the athletic director will determine the appropriate number of spectators who can attend the game inside the stadium, fenced-in area, or open-spaced fields. Attendance for Solanco home contests will be free of charge for all spectators who

in at two separate locations for admissions into the event. Solanco is working on a plan that will allow the band to perform prior to the teams taking the field and then exiting the stadium to allow for a set number of parents to attend. Details will change from week to week. Social distancing guidelines and face covering mandates will be enforced for those in attendance. Restrooms will be available during the contest. For volleyball, due to the governor’s mandate that gatherings indoors may not exceed 25 people, no fans will be permitted into the building to attend. Volleyball games will be limited to players, coaches, officials, and game personnel only. Home games will be livestreamed on the aforementioned YouTube channel. Each school district is making attempts to livestream games as well. Solanco’s field hockey and soccer teams play in semigated facilities with no outdoor seating. These facilities

The Solanco Athletic Department has established procedures for home athletic events. These procedures incorporate mandates issued by Gov. Wolf and the guidelines from the LancasterLebanon League. All guidelines can change from week to week. Readers may check www.solanco.org for updates. All fans, both home and away, are invited to view the contests that will be livestreamed through YouTube. To watch the contests, readers may search for the “Solanco School District” channel at www.youtube.com. A schedule of the planned broadcasted events is forthcoming. The mandated maximum capacity of 250 individuals for an outdoor gathering provided by the governor’s office includes players on both rosters, coaches of both schools, officials, an athletic trainer, a medical doctor, ambulance personnel, event staff, security, the media, and the cheerleaders and their coach from

Visiting spectators, if permitted, will gain admittance with the remaining ticket allotment, not to exceed the maximum of 250 people. The athletic director will count all individuals who are in attendance for each home game. The athletic director will ensure the visiting team receives its tickets prior to the day of the game. A system will be in place to keep track of the number of people who have entered the facility, thus ensuring compliance with the maximum occupancy standards. About half a decade ago, Kelly’s daughter, Annie, now age 13, began fainting in the shower. Simultaneously, Kelly was pursuing a diagnosis for her own invisible illness and was struck by “passing out” as a symptom listed in a support group. That prompted an exploration of a type of dysautonomia called POTS - postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome - as a possibility for Annie. Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for the complex conditions caused by a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which controls the body’s ability for fight or flight or to rest and digest. Unfortunately, local doctors dismissed Annie’s symptoms, so she and Kelly did their best to manage them. When Annie was in fifth grade, Kelly met the mother of a classmate, who mentioned that her son also had a history of passing out. The classmate’s mother referred the Sheaffers to a different pediatric cardiologist, and two years ago, Annie was officially diagnosed with POTS. Meanwhile, Kelly, who previously worked as a nurse, realized that she also had symptoms of POTS, but she has had difficulty receiving an
official medical diagnosis. “Because POTS is an invisible illness, a lot of the symptoms are subjective,” she said. “I was never taught about POTS in nursing school.” Kelly has remedied her lack of knowledge and has become highly verbal about POTS and other invisible illnesses. She also helps Annie learn to advocate for herself when she is not feeling well. “Temperature regulation is difficult (for Annie). When her body is taxed, she runs a fever. Annie’s feeling is like riding a loop-de-loop roller coaster after eating a full meal on a 100-degree day while wearing a parka,” Kelly said. The coronavirus shutdown has had a silver lining for Annie, as she has been able to take advantage of the full online option offered by the Solanco School District. With online school, Annie can retreat to a quiet space and take whatever position her body allows while still participating in her eighth-grade studies. She enjoys school and would like to be a teacher. When Annie feels well, she likes to swim and ride her bicycle. She also enjoys bringing joy to others. “I love making people

WE ARE
In February, Grace Community Church (GCC) of Willow Street children’s music ministry director Katie Wieand excitedly announced plans for the launch of Outpour Kids, a new opportunity for primary grade students to develop their musical inclinations. Then, the coronavirus disrupted lives, and the musical theater camp slated for June was canceled. Wieand reached out to the 40 registered youngsters and offered a virtual program through which they learned to use earbuds and sing along with a click track. Eight students recorded themselves singing parts of a specific song, and the recordings were compiled into a group performance that was posted online. “We were pleased we had the ability to offer something,” Wieand commented, adding that she recognized that students were burnt out by virtual learning, so the decreased participation was not unexpected. Now that in-person gatherings are permitted if organized correctly, Wieand is once again excited to host an Outpour Kids program at GCC, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street. The Outpour Kids Children’s Community Worship Choir will meet on seven Thursday evenings from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, with a final dress rehearsal and performance on Friday, Nov. 20. The fall session had initially been scheduled on Wednesdays, but it was moved to accommodate AWANA programs at local churches and GCC’s youth group, which will use the church building on Wednesday evenings. “We’re being very cautious and respectful of keeping kids safe,” Wieand said. “We have done a lot of planning to make sure they’re safe.”

The spirit of it is fitting. News from the Philadelphia Zoo this summer has had flamingo fans smiling. A flamingo chick hatched on July 12, the first of its species to hatch at the zoo in more than two decades. In a public vote, the chick was named Flaco, the Spanish word for “skinny, referring to its thin legs. “Adorbs, Shank said of the little ball of white fluff. She noted that flamingos turn pink from eating shrimp, a fact credited to the Philadelphia Zoo. Shank has adopted the motto “In a world full of swans, be a flamingo to remind her that differences should be embraced and appreciated. “It’s important to me to laugh at yourself, to bring joy to others, she explained. Now that’s a fad worth celebrating.

Participation in the children’s choir is open to all students in first through sixth grades, with a maximum of 40 participants. A waitlist will be created when the choir is full. Rehearsals will be held in a large classroom, with the floor marked to indicate where students may sit or stand. Choir manager Michelle Rohrer will implement a system that enables children to be dropped off and picked up securely without adults needing to enter the building. Additionally, the church has been equipped for socially distanced seating. High-quality audio and video streaming capability has been added so that worship services and the Nov. 20 performance can be broadcast into other areas of the building. This will provide capacity for choir members’ families to attend the performance. “Putting on the Full Armor of God” is the theme of the choir’s fall session. Wieand’s husband, Matt, will help to lead devotionals related to the theme, and her seventhgrade daughter, Audrey, will assist. The choir will learn three songs: an arrangement of Bethel Music’s “Raise a Hallelujah,” I Am They’s “My Feet Are on the Rock,” and an adaptation of Christy Nock-

I hope it’s a song that comes to their minds when they’re facing challenges,” Wieand said. “It’s totally a God thing that this theme was chosen last year. With all that’s going on, it’s really cool that God worked it out this way.” The theme for the spring session, scheduled for February and March 2021, will be “Created With a Purpose.” The mission of Outpour Kids is to encourage children “to create with passion, excellence, and purpose while growing in a knowledge of and a love for Jesus,” Wieand said. between Sept. 1 and Wednesday, Sept. 30. Participants are invited to post their own photos and videos directly to the Facebook event discussion or anywhere on social media using #LancasterHeartWalk. In addition to walking, participants may choose a few other activities, including getting the whole family involved and having an indoor dance party; trying out a few strengthening exercises like push-ups, lunges and squats; and creating an athome circuit workout. The Lancaster Heart Walk is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health as part of its Healthy For Good platform sponsorship of the American Heart Association in Lancaster County. In addition to supporting the Heart Walk, Lancaster General Health has supported the installation of American Heart Association teaching gardens at five Lancaster County schools, bike racks at local schools, bike repair stations in Lancaster city, and water filtration stations at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. It has been 10 years since Providence Church members Jeff and Terri Swope became accidental missionaries. Jeff grew up in Haiti, the son of missionaries, and in 2008, he returned to the Caribbean island nation to use his experience in the construction industry to build an orphanage. “They didn’t have a plan for the older kids, so we went back (in 2010) and started a home for the older boys,” Terri recalled. The Swopes didn’t intend to create an official organization, but people heard about their efforts and wanted to contribute to the cause, so they formed CrossRoads Mission Haiti and filed for nonprofit status in 2011. The organization’s outreach has grown from there to include church plants, a feeding program, school sponsorships, and medical clinics. “When we started our first church, it was for our young men who were orphaned. There was a stigma around
them, so we wanted (to establish) a church that they would feel comfortable going to,” Terri said. CrossRoads Mission Haiti also supports already existing congregations. “Our heart is really in the mountains, in places where you can only get there on foot. Now we have six churches under our leadership,” she added. “Our church plants are to continue the Great Commission of training and equipping our pastors so they can, in turn, minister to their members and give them hope in Jesus Christ.” The objective of the school sponsorships and feeding program is to protect and preserve families. This seems to be a new outlook in Haiti, Terri noted. “Instead of concentrating on orphanages, organizations are promoting family preservation and helping with programs to keep families together.” “Orphanage” is a misnomer, as many of the residents are children relinquished to the institutions by their families in See Dinner pg 11

Dinner from pg 10 CrossRoads Mission Haiti always hosts a buffet dinner fundraiser on the last Sunday in September at C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, 101 Fite Way, Quarryville. This year, the fundraiser will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but due to COVID-19 and the restaurant’s being unable to open fully, the meal will instead be offered as a takeout dinner. A price has been set for the dinners, with each ticket receiving ham, green beans, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, and a whoopie pie. “It’s not just your basic ham. There’s a distinct taste to it. It’s really good,” Terri commented. She noted that the meals will be distributed drive-through style. Terri noted that she’s a bit nervous about trying something new, but she is excited about the event. “(Restaurant owner) Christy Lapp has been

hope of a better life. “Parents simply cannot provide, because jobs are lacking, (so) they don’t have the means to provide food or pay for schooling,” Terri explained. “Our Haitian director brings the needs of the people before us so we can help alleviate some of the financial burden of those in poverty, so the families can stay together and the children be raised by parents.” Until this year, the Swopes regularly visited Haiti, often taking skilled workers or medical personnel with them. The Haitian director identified areas where the teams could host medical clinics. Due to COVID-19 and civil unrest, Haiti is under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, so the Swopes have not been able to visit. However, they are still able to send money for the school and feeding program, albeit at an increased cost.
