Fire Company Benefits From QPRC Donation Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, has made a $12,783 donation to the Quarryville Fire Company for the purchase of four new handheld gas meters for the company’s fire-fighting apparatus. The new meters are replacing old and obsolete models, fire chief Joel Neff explained. “ We appreciate Quarryville Fire Company’s outstanding service and dedication to keeping our community safe,” said QPRC president and CEO Robert B. Hayward Jr. “We are blessed to have dedicated public servants here in Quarryville, and it is an honor to support their efforts.” “Quarryville Fire Company is grateful for QPRC’s financial support and help in protecting our firefighters’ health and safety,” said Neff, speaking at the check presentation on Aug. 29. “Your contribution means a lot to our
volunteers, and we thank you.” The new gas meters will help the department detect dangerous gases that can cause harm to firefighters as well as bystanders, Neff explained. One of the gases that the meters will detect is hydrogen cyanide (HCN). HCN is produced when common products such as wood, silk, cotton, plastic, foam, and synthetic rubber burn. Firefighters are exposed to HCN in every fire emergency. HCN is 35 times more toxic than carbon monoxide and can enter the body through inhalation, absorption, or ingestion. When HCN enters the body, it targets the heart and brain. The harmful chemical also lingers in the air once fire is extinguished, and the meters will allow monitoring of HCN to ensure the air is safe to breathe. The new meters will also measure carbon monoxide, oxygen, and hydrogen sulfide. See Meter Donation pg 18

It might not be quite like “Barefoot Contessa,” but Quarryville Library director Sylvia Drennen hopes that the new series of cooking classes that will be offered this fall will catch people’s interest. “We’re trying something different - I’m trying to offer a variety of programs for the community,” Drennen commented. Anna Flahart, a local graduate of the Pennsylvania School of Culinary Arts division of YTI, will present the series of five classes, which will illustrate basic cooking techniques with inexpensive recipe ideas. “The people attending will be sitting watching her, not in the kitchen making the food, so it will be like they are watching a cooking show, but they

A vegetarian meal will be the topic of the class on Thursday, Oct. 18, that will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Flahart will prepare garlic Parmesan cauliflower, with risotto and roasted tomatoes. The meal can be made as an all-in-one sheet pan supper or as individual side dishes. Through these recipes, students will learn about seasonings and ways to improve the flavor of out-of-season produce. Instruction will include the different kinds of rice and the methods for cooking each. Flahart will also cover the safe and proper usage of knives. A Vietnamese chicken noodle
soup called pho ga will be the star recipe on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Students will learn how to get the most out of a whole chicken at a minimal cost including how to make chicken stock. Flahart will also discuss shopping and where to find unfamiliar ingredients. Two sessions will conclude the series on Friday, Nov. 16. The first, which will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m., will feature classic margherita pizza. Attendees will learn how to use a pizza stone to create their own homemade pizzas and how to make pizza dough and sauce from scratch. How to follow a
recipe and measure accurately will also be discussed. The second session will run from 6 to 7 p.m. and will cover the importance of following recipes and using proper technique as well as the proper use of kitchen tools while baking classic chocolate chip cookies. The Quarryville Library is located at 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. There is no cost to attend the classes, but registration is required, as participation is limited to 20 people per class. Folks may sign up at www.quarryvillelibrary.org or call the library at 717-7861336.

“Gracenotes tries to play at holidays, about four times a year. This is our first time to venture off-campus,” Esterly remarked. “We are inching more toward getting out there and showing what God is doing through musical arts.” The jazz band specializes in standards from the 1940s to 1960s. “We try to have the American songbook: Count Basie, Mancini, Gershwin, and more,” Esterly said. While she readily admits that she does not have experience as a teacher, she was happy to volunteer to share her knowledge. “I feel like cooking is an important skill to have,” Flahart remarked. “I picked recipes to complement the things I want to teach people and to get people to expand their horizons a little bit.” The series will kick off on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with a bacon and cheese frittata. A frittata is basically a quiche with no crust, and it can comprise a one-dish meal made in a cast-iron skillet for breakfast or any other meal.

tice system. Partnering with the County Criminal Justice System, Home of the Sparrow provides case management services to women re-integrating into their communities following the Collaborative Casework-Women Model developed by the National Institute of Corrections. Home of the Sparrow embraces the philosophy that case management for justiceinvolved women should be a dynamic, seamless process from entry into the system and continue until the woman is stabilized in her community with the goal of not only reducing criminal behavior but increasing the health and well-being of women, their families, and community. They provide a comprehensive case management model that addresses the complex and multiple needs of women involved with the justice system, recognizing that women have strengths that can be mobilized, while matching services in accordance with risk level and need. the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip.
LCPC Event To Feature Podcast The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) invites the community to listen to a Tuesdays at APA Podcast on “Recognizing Community Sustainability” on Friday, Oct. 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Conference Room 102 at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The group will listen to the

Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to
go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other shortterm applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately 170 members representing 75 congregations from 17 denominations. A program of Lancaster Mennonite School, MCCL also includes students from 53 schools, as well as homeschooled students.

APA’s Comprehensive Plan Standards for Sustaining Places is designed to build the capacity of local jurisdictions to integrate sustainability into their comprehensive plans. During the recording of the podcast, the panel looked at how these programs can help communities set and achieve
sustainability goals and gain recognition for those achievements. Speakers included Dr. Vatsal Bhatt and David Rouse, FAICP. AICP and ASLA credits are available. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. Volleyball, Field Hockey Earn First Wins by Mona Steinhauer
hockey teams were winless going into last week. That all changed when the Despite putting forth their spikers worked a 3-0 non-league win best efforts and challenging their over McCaskey on Thursday and the opponents, the volleyball and field hockey team defeated Elizabethtown
2-0 in Wednesday’s battle to stay out of the basement of the Section Two standings. After suffering a competitive 3-1 loss to Hershey at home on Monday and then turning around and dropping a 3-0 result to Garden Spot, the top team in Section Two one night later, the volleyball team finally worked a win. Thursday in Quarryville the Mares blanked the winless Red Tornado 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 for their first victory of the season. “Serving was the key in this match,” said head coach Meghan Cross. “All around, we had excellent serving.” Emma Canale led the attack with 6 aces. Kara McClune (5) and Bri Langley (4) also contributed. “We also defended the net well with Georgia Ewing and Cheyanne Cutler combining for seven blocks,” she added. “I’m hoping this confidence
builder leads to a few more wins.” Other contributors include Nathaly Molinarez with 3 kills and Canale with 9 assists. The going was a bit tougher against the Spartans who got 11 kills from Shawna Zeiset and 6 aces from Sarah Shirk. Solanco came away with 3 kills from Molinarez and didn’t serve a single ace. Langley was busy in the back row with 11 digs, Ewing put up 3 blocks and Canale dished out those 3 assists. “They were definitely the toughest team we’ve faced,” noted Cross. “The girls went into the game down and had a tough time getting things started.” Against Hershey, the Mares were in the hunt for a win but unforced errors denied that effort. Despite falling behind 7-1 in the first set, they tied the game at 17-17 but fell short 25-21. The visitors led from start to finish in the
second set, winning 25-14. “We tried a new lineup in the first two sets two give us a different option,” recalled Cross. “Then we went back to our regular lineup and got into a better rhythm. We’ve been so close in every game we play.” The third set was tied nine times before Langley served the last five points of the night for a 25-17 win. Unfortunately they couldn’t pull out another win. Tied at 9-9 early, Solanco fought from behind after that but managed to knot the score at 21-21 before bowing out 25-21. “Nathaly was strong at the net with five kills and Georgia defended well with three blocks,” Cross noted. “We need to cut down on the unforced errors. When we make our opponent make their own mistakes we play very well.” Langley also scrambled for five digs and Canale put up 11 assists.
FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team sandwiched their first win, a 2-0 shutout over Elizabethtown, around a pair of losses. They opened the week with a 7-0 result against Lampeter-Strasburg and ended it with an 8-0 final against Manheim Central. Against the Bears on Wednesday, Mariah Stoltzfus intercepted an attempted clear by the defense, gained possession and send a shot past the goalie for a 1-0 first half lead. Keirra Laird made it 2-zip at the 17:39 mark of the second half when she collected a rebound off the pads of ET keeper Alaina Telenko and sent the ball to the back of the cage. “It was the first goal of the year for both Mariah and Keirra,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “We have put a heavy emphasis on ‘what is your role’ in different situations and it’s starting to reflect in games.”

Solanco’s Gabriella Griffonetti, left, and Elsie Zaborskiy blanked Donegal’s Mary Murphy and Emma Shelly, 8-0, in doubles match to give the Mares one of their two team points in a 5-2 Section Two loss to the host Indians last Friday.
TENNIS that worked their seventh shutout of In the meat of their schedule, the the season. “Though the score may not show it, Mares suffered their third straight loss last Tuesday against a Pioneer squad we played very well,” said head coach Todd Brown. “L-S is a great team and have several returning players who play throughout the year and we were able to play with them through most of the points.” Gabby Griffonetti and Elsie Zaborskiy put up the best challenge of the day, dropping a hard-fought 8-5 No. 2 doubles loss. Zaborskiy also battled at No. 4 singles but came up short against Ryan Gerhardt, 6-3, 6-1. “Gabby and Elsie continue to impress on the courts and are very smart players,” stated Brown. Looking for their second Section Two win, the Mares faced Donegal on Friday but fell to 1-4 with a 5-2 loss. The hosts improved to 2-4. Griffonetti and Zaborskiy put Solanco on the board with an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 and Faith Redcay earned the second team point with a solid 6-, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. BOYS’ SOCCER At home last Monday, the Mules were dealt their second straight 3-0 loss, this time at the hands of Lancaster Mennonite who sits tied at the top of Section Three at 3-0. The Blazers held a slim 6-4 edge in corners but outshot the hosts 10-3 en route to the win. Jake Smolik recorded seven saves in goal. “The varsity team put in a great performance against the most formidable team in Section Three over the past years,” said head coach James Photo by Mona Steinhauer
Solanco’s Isaac Nadu posted a round of 102 to top the Golden Mules’ card and finish 14th in the individual standings in last Friday’s Section Two match at Tanglewood.
Snyder. “The boys executed their game and held the Blazers to just three goals. “Even in the loss, the boys are playing better soccer and are putting the skills we work on in practice to into use,” he continued. “I’m pleased with their play and the effort they are putting in to make the program stronger, and eventually, more successful.” Friday’s 1-0 loss to Elco was their tightest outing to date. After a scoreless first half, Elco snuck in the game-winner after the break. 24-hours later, the Mules notched their first win of the season over Section Four opponent, Lebanon (2-7). Evan Boule and Sean Salisbury found the back of the net and provided the punch Solanco needed up front while keeper Jake Smolik anchored the defense with seven saves. GIRLS’ SOCCER The lady booters faced the top two teams in Section Three last week and came up empty both in the wins department and goals scored. Monday they battled the second place Blazers of Lancaster Mennonite and for 54 minutes it was a scoreless. The hosts, however, snuck in the game winner at the 54:22 mark and the lone goal stood. Gabi Dolan recorded seven saves in goal while her counterpart, Kaeleigh King, needed just one to preserve the shutout. In a night game at Elco on Thursday, the Mares were looking for an upset of the undefeated Raiders
(7-0-1 overall) and were encouraged after giving up just one goal in the first half. The hosts, who have given up just three goals on the year, broke the game open with two goals scored in a five minute span midway through the second half. Dolan again recorded seven saves while the Mares challenged Elco’s Maddy Bailey who needed three saves to preserve the Raider’s third straight shutout. The Mares went out of section play on Friday night to take on Penn Manor (1-8) and came home with a 1-0 loss. The Comets scored the game-winner midway through the second half. Less than 24-hours later, they capped their four games in six day week with a 3-2 non-league thriller over Kennett Saturday morning, pushing their overall record to 3-7. With all five goals scored in the first half, this one was entertaining early. The visitors went in front ten minutes into the game. Solanco knotted the score seven minutes later when Alana Yoder found the back of the net. Five minutes later, it was Sammi Jackson working her way into the scoring column and pushing the lead to 2-1 Solanco. Kayden Bedwell added an insurance goal in the 35th minute which proved to be the deal breaker for Kennett. The visitors cut the lead to 3-2 two minutes before halftime. Neither team scored after that. Dolan recorded nine saves on the day while Yoder and Jackson both dished out assists.

GOLF Due to the weather, again, Solanco competed in its second 9-hole match of the season last Monday afternoon at Media Heights and for the fifth time this season, the Mules finished in fifth place, carding a 228 team score. Andy Teaman (54), Greta Plechner (58), Jesse Spangler (59) and Olivia Lasko (66) accounted for the scoring. The team was hoping for a home course advantage at Tanglewood on Friday but that wasn’t the case as they suffered four more losses. Their 426 team total fell behind Warwick (328), Ephrata (376), Elizabethtown (379) and Garden Spot (391). Isaac Nadu was low man for the day, carding a 102 while Spangler (107), Teaman (108) and Plechner (109) finished out the day.

FOOTBALL In a game that literally see-sawed back-and-forth from start to finish, it was no real surprise that the end result would come down to the last play. Solanco fought from behind and took a 27-24 lead over hosting CV Friday night with a little more than two minutes to play. The Bucks responded with a 10-play drive and a two-yard run by Keegan Martin to go back in front, 31-27. The Mules again looked to go in front, moving the ball all the way to the CV 44. But a last second heave in the end zone was broken up as time expired, leaving CV with a wildly entertaining victory. “I always say the team with the least amount of mistakes wins,” said head coach Tony Cox. “We had 16 penalty calls that cost us 135 yards. They had six penalties. I just don’t think we were focused enough.” CV went in front on a 10-yard strike from Bradley Stoltzfus to Joe Cardina. Solanco answered with Joel McGuire’s 4-yard scamper, tying the score at 7-7 in the first. The Bucks managed the only points of the second quarter, a 25-yard field goal by Cardina, and led 10-7 at the break. The Mules went back in front on a 9-yard run by Nafis Moore but the PAT was no good, leaving Solanco in front 13-10. CV returned the favor when Stoltzfus sent a pass over the top to a wide open Cardina with 8:20 on the clock. Cardina’s PAT pushed the lead to 17-13. Both teams continued trading TD’s in the fourth quarter. McGuire scored on another 4-yard run and then added a two point conversion. CV went the other way and found the end zone with Martin’s 13-yard burst up the middle with 4:58 on the clock. Down 24-21, Solanco countered and took their last lead on McGuire’s one-yard keeper. The two-point conversion failed and set the stage for Martin’s 2-point TD and Solanco’s last second attempt. “I probably should have killed more clock,” said Cox, “but I didn’t want to stop our momentum. This was a tough loss but the kids never gave up. Our frustration leaked over a bit with the penalties and that killed our momentum. We finished with 435 yards of offense but lost over 100 yards in penalties. We need to take care of that.” McGuire finished with 184 rushing yards. Moore added 143 on 8 attempts and Cole Lewis chipped in with 70 yards on 6 carries and hauled in one

Coalition Posts Informative Event Share Your Wishes Coalition invites the community to a free event on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the third-floor conference room at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion, 2100 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The coalition aims to be a supportive community where conversations about end-of-life decisions are discussed openly and honestly, without fear or avoidance, so that a person’s wishes and values are honored during the last stages of life. Advance care planning is a process that enables individuals to make plans about their future health care. Advance care plans provide direction to health care professionals, family, and other loved ones when people are not in a position to make or communicate their own health care choices. The free workshop will focus on what advanced care planning is, how to select a health care agent, how one can express his or her wishes, and how to share the plan. Attendees will also be able to reflect on their values and beliefs. Individuals are asked to preregister by calling 888-LGHINFO (888-544-4636).

The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day.
