Celebrating Solid Rock School-year programs for students in kindergarten through ninth grade will begin at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Information about the after-school and evening offerings is available at www.solidrockquarryville.com/ school-programs. Additionally, the Christian ministry has planned two fundraising events that will take place in the coming weeks. An online auction will be held from Monday, Oct. 19, to Thursday, Oct. 29. The third annual 5K and fun run has been set for Saturday, Oct. 31. Registration for the 5K must be completed by Monday, Oct. 12, to be guaranteed an event T-shirt. Dana Nixon and her daughter, Andrea Nixon, have coordinated the auction for the last three years. Typically, live and silent auctions are held in conjunction with a ham dinner, but a sitdown meal for 200 people was

not feasible with social distancing guidelines. “ We’re hoping it’s a good thing,” Dana remarked. “We hear people do better on virtual auctions than in person.” She noted that participation in an online auction is not limited to the capacity of the fellowship hall where Solid Rock’s in-person auctions were held. Individuals from anywhere may place bids, as long as they are able to pick up their items at Solid Rock from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. Payment will be made at pickup, and cash and check will be preferred. Fall and home décor, jewelry, indoor furniture, a vintage table, gardening supplies, gift certificates, and more have been donated for the auction. Union Presbyterian Church continued its tradition of contributing a hand-knotted comforter, and Wesley Church repeated its popular package of a fire pit and s’mores supplies. The Nixons will accept additional items for the auction through Friday, Oct. 9. See Solid Rock pg 3

The man came around and delivered ice, but not in a refrigerated truck. It was an open truck,” Bill explained. The members of the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) know that good records are key to a successful outcome, and they are depending on this concept for the annual turkey supper set for Saturday, Oct. 10. “We like to take notes after each event and plan for the next year,” said MOPW member Debbie Hoover. “The notes from last year said to plan for 500 (meals).” In previous years, between takeout orders and on-site diners, the MOPW served about 400 meals. Last year’s turnout was so good

I said, ‘Absolutely not!’” The five-car garage was built in a less-prominent location and prompted Pat to say, “It’s almost nicer than the house.” The garage is now home to the ice truck, a 1930 Model A coupe, and a 1921 Model T Depot Hack. “It’s like a station wagon,” Bill said of the Depot Hack. “They used to use them to transport people from the railroad station to hotels and

Unlike Bill’s other vehicles, this car has not been restored. “It’s all original, all dried up and cracked,” he said. “It’s worth more the way it is - the way Henry Ford built it.” When the Mustos are in Florida, Bill volunteers in an automobile museum. Early in his tenure, he used to work on the vehicles. Now, thanks to arthritis, Pat said Bill has become a pointer, showing the other volunteers what they need to do to get a car running again. “He’s very good; he’s very mechanical,” Pat said. “When we drove the Model A into the garage (in Long Island), my

became nearly impossible to insure in New York, however, so Bill sold it. Pat noted that Bill had a Franklin car as well. Although the early models were touted as lighter and more responsive than other luxury cars, Bill’s Franklin was the opposite. “It was too heavy (for us to drive),” Pat related. “They didn’t have power steering back then.” Now that the Mustos are ready to settle into their Kirkwood home, they are looking to meet other collectors and would like to join related clubs. They also hope to start up their volunteer work once it is safe to do so. “At home (in Long Island), we took (the antique vehicles) to the veterans’ hospital near us,” Pat said. “We try to do charitable things with them.”

Turkey Supper from pg 1 Although labor-intensive, handling the majority of the prep allows the MOPW to realize a greater profit on the dinner. “The women’s association is very mission-oriented. This is a way that we can raise money for missions,” Hoover explained. The MOPW prefers to use the funds locally. The group contributes to Boy Scout Troop 87, which is chartered by MOPC; Flowing Oil community meals; Solid Rock Youth Ministries; and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. It also purchases Christmas gifts for residents at the Ware Presbyterian Village and provides financial gifts to families as needs arise. “It’s all passed on to try to help someone,” Hoover remarked. For more information about the turkey supper, readers may call MOPW member Shirley Miller at 717786-3690.

that the organizers recommended increasing capacity. While they are doing just that, safety guidelines for mitigating the coronavirus have resulted in the MOPW planning to serve the meal entirely via takeout. A drivethrough line will be set up around Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until sold out. The meals will include roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls and butter, pepper cabbage, applesauce, cranberry sauce, and whoopie pies. MOPW members prepare most of the food. “We peel our own potatoes, cook our own turkey, make our own pepper cabbage, and make our own stuffing and gravy,” Hoover commented. “The corn is homegrown. Bringing Visibility To An Invisible Illness

ARRIVING LATE?

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Physicians in training are often advised the old adage “If you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras,” but a growing number of people have embraced the term “zebra” to describe their invisible illnesses, many of which are difficult to diagnose. Kelly Sheaffer of Quarryville is one such person. About half a decade ago, Kelly’s daughter, Annie, now age 13, began fainting in the shower. Simultaneously, Kelly was pursuing a diagnosis for her own invisible illness and was struck by “passing out” as a symptom listed in a support group. That prompted an exploration of a type of dysautonomia called POTS postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome - as a possibility for Annie. Dysautonomia is an umbrella term for the complex conditions caused by a dysfunction of the autonomic

nervous system, which controls the body’s ability for fight or flight or to rest and digest. Unfortunately, local doctors dismissed Annie’s symptoms, so she and Kelly did their best to manage them. When Annie was in fifth grade, Kelly met the mother of a classmate, who mentioned that her son also had a history of passing out. The classmate’s mother referred the Sheaffers to a different pediatric cardiologist, and two years ago, Annie was officially diagnosed with POTS. Meanwhile, Kelly, who previously worked as a nurse, realized that she also had symptoms of POTS, but she has had difficulty receiving an official medical diagnosis. “Because POTS is an invisible illness, a lot of the symptoms are subjective,” she said. “I was never taught about POTS in nursing school.” Kelly has remedied her lack of knowledge and has become highly verbal about POTS and other invisible illnesses. She also helps Annie learn to advocate for herself when she is not feeling well. “Temperature regulation is difficult (for Annie). When her body is taxed, she runs a fever. Annie’s feeling is like riding a loop-de-loop roller coaster after eating a full meal on a 100-degree day while wearing a parka,” Kelly said. The coronavirus shutdown has had a silver lining for Annie, as she has been able to take advantage of the full

online option offered by the Solanco School District. With online school, Annie can retreat to a quiet space and take whatever position her body allows while still participating in her eighth-grade studies. She enjoys school and would like to be a teacher. When Annie feels well, she likes to swim and ride her bicycle. She also enjoys bringing joy to others. “I love making people Kelly Sheaffer and her daughter, Annie Sheaffer, raise smile, even on my worst days,” Annie comment- awareness of POTS and other “zebra” conditions. ed. “It makes the world a better place. the first walk, which was held in 1980. There will be several photo opportunities, said planning committee member Mary Etta Reinhart. “We’re trying to make it a fun event but a socially distanced event,” she noted. Reinhart shared that the planning committee discussed the walk in light of coronavirus mitigation guidelines and decided to go ahead with holding the event because it takes place entirely outdoors. Some of the procedures have been modified for safety. Registration will

open at 8:30 a.m. at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood, and will take place outside the pavilion instead of inside as it had in previous years. Additionally, everyone will be required to wear masks during registration. Individually wrapped refreshments, along with hot tea and coffee, will be available before the walk begins at 9 a.m. and upon participants’ return. The Solanco CROP Hunger Walk is 5 miles long. The first part of the route will take place on a paved trail. Individuals will have the option of then proceeding onto grassy paths, or they may complete another loop on the pavement. Reinhart said the entirely paved route is ideal for people with strollers. Masks will not need to be worn if participants maintain social distance. Leashed dogs See CROP pg 7

CROP from pg 6 are welcome at the event. Reinhart related that at last year’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the nationwide CROP Hunger Walk, one of the celebratory photos featured a dog that has participated in five walks. The committee has created three ways to participate in the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. First, individuals may do as they have in previous years and join the walk in person. They may pick up fundraising envelopes by contacting Reinhart at 717808-4306 or ereinhart403 @comcast.net and solicit donations from friends, family members, co-workers, and others. Funds may be turned in on Oct. 17 or within two weeks after the walk. Second, individuals may participate entirely virtually by creating a fundraising page at www.crophunger walk.org/quarryvillepa and committing to complete a 5mile walk. Fundraising may be done entirely digitally, so participants never need to be face-to-face with anyone. The third option is a hybrid of the other two. Participants may pick up envelopes and collect donations from others but complete the 5 miles at another time or location. “Any variation works,” Reinhart commented. However the money is collected, the important thing is that it is collected. The proceeds will be divided, with 75% going to Church World Service and 25% to the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. “The need is up. The need is huge worldwide,” Reinhart said. For more information about the Solanco CROP Hunger Walk, readers may visit the aforementioned website or contact Reinhart.

Wagner Claims Second Section 2 Scoring Title BY MONA STEINHAUER

The golf team, virtually unaffected by the corona virus, wrapped up their regular season on September 18 and then competed in the L-L League Golf Championships Monday, Sept. 21 at Meadia Heights. Sophomore Logan Wagner fired an 81 in the September 18th regular season finale at Ephrata and clinched a second straight Section Two scoring title. His 78.6 average edged Garden Spot’s Zach Lessley (80.2). “This is definitely a first,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “I haven’t had anyone win two scoring titles in 15 years.” Freshmen Brayden Herr (87) and Nathan Tucker (98) and Anna Sexton (91) all contributed best-ever tournament scores while Andy Teaman (91) and Olivia Lasko (102) rounded out the scoring. The team, with a 350 score, fell two strokes shy of upending Garden Spot (348) and was one stroke behind E-town. The Mules finish with a 14-9 Section Two mark, following GS (22-1) and ET (18-5).

Their championship round at Meadia featured similar results. Wagner’s 81 put him in a 7-way tie for the fifth lowest score and qualified him for the District Three Championships. Teaman (97), Herr (98), Lasko (104) and Sexton (108) also competed. Lasko’s score was the sixth lowest score in the girls’ tournament. “ We played at Meadia the Monday before leagues and improved seven strokes,” Minnich noted. “The course was definitely tougher at leagues so that is good incentive for next year.” TENNIS The racket club went into week two of the season on a three match win streak, including shutouts over Lebanon and Garden Spot. That momentum, however, was halted with a 7-0 loss at Manheim Central on Sept. 21. Playing No. 2, Perla Benitez put up the best numbers of the day, pulling off a 6-3 opening set over Casandra Ginder before falling short 6-4, 10-8. “That was a tough tiebreaker loss for Perla who split sets last year against Ginder as well,” said head coach Annie Hammel who returns to the sidelines.

In a tightly contested matchup Wednesday, Solanco fell short against Ephrata, 4-3. “They seemed a little more experienced with match play and finishing points,” noted Hammel. “We need to be a little more consistent.” Benitez and Sidney Beyer pulled out the only doubles win and the two squads split in singles play. Benitez rallied to win a tiebreaker (5-7, 6-3 (10-3) at No. 2 and Beyer pulled out a No. 4 win, 7-5, 7-5. FIELD HOCKEY A penalty stroke with 7:32 left in overtime was the deciding factor in Solanco’s season opening loss to visiting Garden Spot last Wednesday. Despite taking the early lead on a first quarter goal by Mariah Stoltzfus. The Spartans tied the game with 8:09 left in the third, setting the stage for the extra period. Both squads threatened in overtime but Spot was awarded a stroke when Amanda Leeland’s fastbreak effort was aggressively denied by Solanco keeper Kimmy Beacham. “Kimmy almost saved that stroke,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “I thought she had a great game. They all played well. We just need to work on remaining composed in the circle. We would have liked the ‘W’ but are happy to start with an overtime game.” CROSS COUNTRY In their season opener last Thursday, and under first year head coach Kyle Nardella, Solanco’s harrier teams went 0-4 in a tri-meet at Hempfield. Freshman Lilly Soulliard, with a 19:55 second place effort, was Solanco’s highest finisher. Emma Baxter (7), Christine Wagner (12), Nicole Dodson (15), and Olivia Singleton (16) rounded out the top five as Solanco fell to Lebanon and the hosting Black Knights. Sophomore Anthony Solis, a district qualifier last year, was tops for the boys, taking 10th overall in 17:14. Avery Jacobsen (14), Wyatt Tomison (17), Jimmy Hartigan (20) and Joey Hartigan (21) completed the top five scoring.

“Hempfield is at a different level as a team but we were happy with some individual performances,” said Nardella, an assistant at Solanco the past eight years. “The girls are young (three freshmen, no seniors) and were missing two key individuals due to injury. They will only get stronger as the season goes on.” BOYS’ SOCCER First year head coach Brandon Smith brings a new standard and philosophy to Solanco soccer. “The history of this program is just that, history. We can’t undo it. What we can do is focus on right now,” he said. “We can continue to get better every day, perfect fundamentals and play for each other. When you put those variables together, positive things can happen. “This group has a lot of pride in what they do,” he added. “They want to get better.” Solanco opened its season against Lancaster Mennonite, one of the best teams in the district, last Wednesday. “Yes we lost 7-0 but we stuck together and did not give up,” Smith said. “Everything is brand new this year. We had the right thoughts PHOTO BY MONA STEINHAUER about finding the right angles, movement off the ball, and makSolanco’s Maggie Hirst moves to take control of ing the simple pass. Now we the ball in front of Garden Spot’s Hannah Hoffman need to add speed, accuracy, and during the Mares’ 2-1, overtime loss to the visiting communication.” Spartans last Wednesday. GIRLS’ SOCCER After setting a school record for wins last year (14-6-2), the girls’ soccer team opened Section Three play last Wednesday with a 2-0 home win over Lancaster Mennonite. Meg Bailey’s first half goal in a crowded box proved to be the game-winner but Rilyn Saner added an insurance goal with nine minutes remaining. They outshot the Blazers 13-5 with the bulk of their opportunities coming in the second half. Caroline Drumm recorded five saves. With eight returning starters, Solanco’s expectation of returning to the post-season remains their number one goal. VOLLEYBALL First year head coach Dillion Costrello has high hopes that Solanco will improve on last year’s 4-18 record. They return five seniors and have a strong junior class. They opened the season with a 3-0 loss at Elizabethtown on Thursday, Sept. 24. The Bears, with 16 kills and three aces, held the visitors to single digits in game one and went on to win 2511, 25-10. Maggie Perry anchored the defense with five digs, Jada Dow finished with a pair of kills, Emma Canale PHOTOS BY MONA STEINHAUER put up two blocks and Anya Fisher served up Solanco’s Perla Benitz (top photo) and Sidney Beyer one ace.

Solanco’s Logan Wagner poses with his trophy after he captured the Lancaster-Lebanon League, Section Two scoring title with a 78.6 average on the season.

(bottom photo) handled Ephrata’s Amanda Nolt and Ashlyn Mazzocchi, 8-3, at number one doubles to give the Mares one of their three team points in their 4-3 loss to the visiting Mountaineers last Wednesday.

Guidelines Posted For Athletic Events will be enforced for those in attendance. Restrooms will be available during the contest. For volleyball, due to the governor’s mandate that gatherings indoors may not exceed 25 people, no fans will be permitted into the building to attend. Volleyball games will be limited to players, coaches, officials, and game personnel only. Home games will be livestreamed on the aforementioned YouTube channel. Each school district is making attempts to livestream games as well. Solanco’s field hockey and soccer teams play in semigated facilities with no outdoor seating. These facilities are still considered an outdoor gathering space, and they will need to comply with the 250-person capacity guideline. Athletic directors are working with their school districts on plans to livestream field hockey and soccer games when possible. The Solanco Athletic Department will work with the visiting team The

and compile lists of players, coaches and essential staff members who will be in attendance for contests on the Solanco campus. Those figures will be combined with Solanco’s own numbers to give an accurate count of essential contest attendees. Once an accurate essential personnel count is tabulated, the athletic director will determine the appropriate number of spectators who can attend the game inside the stadium, fenced-in area, or open-spaced fields. Attendance for Solanco home contests will be free of charge for all spectators who are permitted to attend. Parents, other family members, and friends will be given priority for attendance. Visiting spectators, if permitted, will gain admittance with the remaining ticket allotment, not to exceed the maximum of 250 people. The athletic director will count all individuals who are in attendance for each home game. The athletic director will

ensure the visiting team receives its tickets prior to the day of the game. A system will be in place to keep track of the number of people who have entered the facility, thus ensuring compliance with the maximum occupancy standards. Once inside, Solanco will monitor the spectators and enforce the social distancing guidelines and face-covering policies. Restrooms will be available to spectators and visiting teams.

For cross-country, once Solanco has compiled the numbers from each team participating, it will determine if it can permit spectators to attend the home meets. Spectators will not be granted access to the start/finish line areas. No admission will be charged. Masks are mandatory at all times for everyone once outside of their own vehicle. Everyone must maintain social distancing at all times.

Home tennis matches are not able to accommodate spectators inside the fenced court areas, due to the nature of the court setup and gated perimeters. Spectators can view the tennis matches from outside the gated area, free of charge. Masks are mandatory at all times for everyone once outside of their own vehicle. Everyone must maintain social distancing at all times.

If Solanco parents are permitted to attend, they will be notified by the athletic department. Once the number of in-person spectators has been determined, Solanco will establish an attendance list for admission into the stadium. The number of seats will be determined on a weekly basis and will fluctuate, depending on the size of each visiting school’s roster. All parking lot entrances will be closed off, and there will only be one area to enter the stadium parking lot. Spectators will be asked to check in at two separate locations for admissions into the event. Solanco is working on a plan that will allow the band to perform prior to the teams taking the field and then exiting the stadium to allow for a set number of parents to attend. Details will change from week to week. Social distancing guidelines and face covering mandates

(due to coronavirus safety), we bought toys for the classrooms to play with.” Clark noted that a virtual assembly is being planned, with Martic principal Jen Sugra working on the details. In-person assemblies are impractical with social distancing, Clark pointed out. The community around Martic Elementary is tightly knit, Clark and Kline asserted. One of the PTO board members is a teacher at the school, and another teacher is a member of the Martic Pantry board. Clark said community support is vital right now, adding, “Without … fundraisers, we can’t do anything for the kids. We do everything we can to help kids have fun, be kids, (and) have assemblies. And we want to make sure we have the funds we need when we get back to normal.” Lehman and her husband, Steve, founded Martic Pantry

Pantry clients receive reloadable cash cards that can be used to buy groceries at the Lehmans’ Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood. “We really appreciate the Martic Pantry, the Lehmans, and what they do for the school, the way they support families,” Clark commented. “If we need things for the school, lunches, we go to them. Their pantry is for people who need the help. They’re good people with good hearts.” To learn more about Martic Pantry, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Martic Pantry. Sheetz from pg 12 created a coin shortage in the U.S., which has directly impacted Sheetz. As a result, during July customers had the option to donate the extra change that they would normally receive on a transaction to Sheetz For the Kidz. Each Sheetz store then rang these donations through the register and directed them to the charity. With 100% of all donations directly supporting local children, Sheetz For the Kidz provides children in need the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with gifts such as new toys, clothes and other basic needs. Working with the Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families, Sheetz employees shop for and wrap gifts and host holiday parties for the children and their families. Last year, more than $1.7 million was distributed, making the holiday season brighter for more than 9,700 children in the six states where Sheetz operates. In partnership with MakeA-Wish, funds raised during the campaign also sponsor wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions. The charity sponsors one child per Sheetz operating district, totaling 55 children this year. Furthermore, to broaden the connection to the communities it serves, Sheetz For the Kidz recently announced a $620,000 donation to Feeding America to provide food to children in need. This commitment equates to approximately 10,000 meals per store. There are many ways customers can support Sheetz For the Kidz throughout the year by purchasing a Sheetz For the Kidz water, with 25 cents from each bottle directly supporting the charity; shopping on AmazonSmile and selecting “Sheetz For the Kidz as the charity of their choice so that Amazon will donate 0.5% of purchases to the charity; and donating online at www.sheetz.com/ftk. Sheetz For the Kidz is a nonprofit organization, designated as a 501(c)(3) charity, independent of the Sheetz Corporation. The organization was created in 1992 by local store employees wanting to help local children. The mission of the charity is to provide support, hope, joy and happiness to children in need within the communities in which Sheetz operates. To date, the charity has impacted more than 119,500 children living in the communities Sheetz serves.
