CROP Walk To Remediate Local, Global Hunger By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The organizers of the Solanco CROP Walk aim to make the event meaningful for participants. At this year’s event, a five-gallon container of water will be placed in the pavilion at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood, where the walkers will gather on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20. “(Participants) can experience how it feels to be a person who must walk a distance carrying fresh water for their families,” said event co-chair Mary Etta Reinhart. “Helping communities find sources of fresh water is one of the important efforts of Church World Service.” Three-fourths of the proceeds from the Solanco CROP Walk will support the global efforts of Church World Service (CWS) to reduce hunger and poverty in countries around the world. CROP Hunger Walks make a difference
Individuals and groups participated in the 2017 Solanco CROP Walk and raised more than $9,200. This year’s fundraiser for local and global hunger remediation efforts will be held on Oct. 20 at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood. worldwide, assisting in ensuring that more children reach their fifth birthdays, teaching sustainable ways to grow food, and providing additional sources of food and income to families facing extreme challenges. I was always fascinated by the relationship between our (Hebrew) people and the eternal Creator of heaven and earth. When we as a people were obedient to our Creator’s mandates for our lives everything went well. Whenever we decided to go our own way we suffered tribulation. It seemed that we as His chosen people were always screwing up. I realize that it is because of the love of the Lord, shown to us since we were separated as a people, that the nations of the world in their jealousy persecuted us. I have made an exhaustive study of the Feast days in an effort to ďŹ nd our creator’s heart toward us. You must read this book. It examines the Levitical feasts and the effect our Creator intended them to have on ancient Israel, and the effect He wanted them to have on us, and all the world. It is my prayer that a better understanding of these feasts will increase your appreciation of our creator’s glorious salvation for our people and all mankind. Anyone can download a free copy of the book Reections on Our Holy Holidays by Lloyd Elias Scalyer. You may choose a pdf ďŹ le, an ePUB ďŹ le compatible with most eBook readers, or both. Instructions to do this are as follows: Go to the homepage of the website for Lititz Institute, www.lititzinstitute.org. On the homepage there is a rotating picture at the top of the page. The second picture which comes up is one of the book and the caption “Discover the Great Feasts of our Jewish Heritage.â€? Click on the lower right corner of this picture for a free download. Depending on your Internet speed loading the second page is variable, but in most cases the picture changes several times a minute. After clicking, you will come to a page with a copy of the book and a heading “Free EBook.â€? Immediately below this is the option to downlod the book. If you choose the pdf ďŹ le, note the ďŹ rst two pages are blank; and there is no cover. If you have problems or questions, contact Lititz Institute by e-mail via the website.

Schreiber Pediatric held its 30th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sept. 9. The event raised more than $115,000, which will go directly to support Schreiber’s array of therapy and educational services. This year’s Duckie Day at Lancaster County Central Park was curtailed because of heavy rain. Schreiber still managed a successful Duckie campaign because of higher-than-expected Duckie ticket sales and generous sponsorship support. Day-of sales fell short of the average total of $10,000 because of the weather, but supporters have helped erase that shortfall by making contributions after the event. The largest post-race gift came from Orrstown Bank, which had originally sponsored the event and sold tickets in its Lancaster County branches. Orrstown Bank contributed an additional $15,000. Donations can still be made via check or at www.schreiberpediatric.org/donate. This year’s event sold about 15,000 yellow and blue tickets. At the end of the festival, Schreiber ambassadors Kami Appleby, Giuliana and Paxton Grasso and Connery Pham

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert will take place from 7 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. PUBLISHED WEDNESDAYS
Frank Stellar’s garden railway was a dream deferred for many years as other ventures - like a successful teaching and coaching career at Donegal High School and raising a family - took priority. Upon retiring, he set out to design and install an expansive backyard layout at his Manheim home. Instead of starting small and gradually adding on, he opted to go big from the start. “At my age, I knew what I wanted to do and knew that it’d be a oneand-done thing,” said Stellar. The approximately 30-by-70yard layout features a doubletrack railway with G-scale trains and a multitude of buildings nestled among eye-catching gardens. For the buildings - which include a train station, a power plant, a coal mine, a church, houses, barns, and more - Stellar worked from kits or modified birdhouses that fit his vision. Antique vehicles dot the roadways, and last summer Stellar added a small pond and babbling waterfall. Battery-powered trains travel along tracks that swirl throughout the yard at several levels of elevation, disappearing from time to time under tunnels or the deck before reappearing to cross bridges and trestles all hand-built by Stellar. “It’s all one continuous loop, and I can run three trains at a time,” Stellar noted. The tracks also lead through a small doorway into the garage, where they can loop around Stellar’s workshop before returning outdoors. Just how many hours go into maintenance and upkeep for the layout and garden is tough to say, but the entire project is a labor of love for Stellar. Railroading is in his blood and has been a part of his life since he was a child. “As a kid, my parents would take me to the Reading Railroad in the stroller, and it was something that just stayed with me,” he recalled. Stellar’s grandfather worked as a tower operator at the Reading Railroad, where several of his uncles established careers as well. When Stellar reached the ripe old age of 2, his father

presented him with a Lionel train set that was his first foray into what has become a lifelong model railroading hobby. “It was something that was instilled in me, and I just had this ambition,” said Stellar. Stellar’s garden railway will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 12th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 7. The self-guided, family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill garden center stores and in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s museum store, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours or by using a printable ticket request available at www.rrmuseumpa.org. Tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania houses 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an education center, a library and archives, exhibits, and a museum store. To learn more, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-687-8628. This will be Stellar’s sixth year participating in the Garden Railways Tour. Aside from supporting the mission of the museum, he enjoys having the opportunity to watch the faces of visitors as they step into his backyard and their eyes light up. “I think it’s just the overall effect, because they aren’t expecting to turn around the corner and see all of this,” said Stellar.

Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods. The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling. It takes at least 150 people to

the deadline for orders. The pies will be available for pickup at Lancaster County Masonic lodges in Lancaster, Quarryville, Ephrata, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. This fall’s lineup includes baked and chilled minced meat, apple crumb, cherry crumb, peach crumb, and pumpkin, as well as fresh sugar-free apple, baked frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill
cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has offices in the Masonic Center. Pie sale proceeds account for about 40 percent of the center’s operating budget, said director Heather Hinkel. The center serves students in first through 12th grades from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Chester counties, remediating dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham method. All instruction is provided individually at no charge to clients, but it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one client for a year. To order pies or to learn more about dyslexia remediation, readers may visit www.childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org, call 717-481-5680, or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com.

Mules Challenged By E-town for Homecoming by Mona Steinhauer
For the second week in a row, turnovers (2 fumbles) and penalties (one roughing the passer) proved to be the difference in being dealt a loss or coming out on top. Elizabethtown put a damper on Solanco’s homecoming activities this past Friday night as they put together a come-from-behind win over the Golden Mules, a 45-44 thriller. Solanco pretty much led from start to finish. Joel McGuire (182 yards)
scored the first of four rushing TD’s on a one yard plunge and Nafis Moore (88 yards on 13 carries) added 4-yarder before Cole Lewis blocked a punt with 3:40 left in the first quarter, leaving the hosts in front 14-12. The Mules looked to take control in the second frame, outscoring the visitors 30-13 for a 37-19 lead at the break. McGuire opened with a 17 yard TD, and E-town countered before Solanco ran off 16 straight points. McGuire scored on a two-yard plunge,

Moore ran it in from 18-yards and Josiah Petersheim tackled Cole Patrick in the end zone for a safety. The Bears, who did the bulk of their damage in the air (343 yards) denied the Mules in the third quarter while picking up a pair of scores. They started their comeback with a fumble recovery in the end zone and followed with a 70-yard TD reception to Luke Pierson. A second fumble gave the ball back to Etown and, after a roughing the passer call, the Bears converted with another passing TD, cutting the lead to 37-33. McGuire’s 60-yard run opened the fourth quarter and put the Mules in front 44-33. E-town, however, cut the lead to five with a 3-yard run and then denied the hosts. Cole Livingston returned the ensuing kickoff to the Solanco 30 with 1:19 remaining. One play later they were sitting at firstand-goal from the 4. The Mules held, but on fourth down a half-back pass to Livingston in the end zone was all E-town needed to forge ahead. Shaneef Carter’s 91-yards on 12 attempts contributed to Solanco’s 427 rushing yards. Seth Harnish paced the defense with 9 tackles, Petersheim added 5 with Lewis, Seth Buckwalter and Daniel Sampson adding 4 each. Indians maintained their ranking with a 7-0 victory. They scored three times in the first 14 minutes, keeping Solanco goalie Jake Smolik (8 saves) busy. Saturday’s non-league outing pitted the Mules against the top team in Section Four, Lancaster Catholic. The Crusaders held a slim 1-0 lead at the half before erupting for three second half goals and improving to 9-1-1 overall. CROSS COUNTRY Head coach Craig Ausel was anticipating two wins for his squads last week but came away with just one. The girls’ picked up a win over Lebanon (15-55) as the Cedars did not have a full squad. They suffered a 15-44 result against CV (6-2). The boys’ managed a tighter score but still fell short, falling 23-33 to both Lebanon and CV. “The season has provided some challenges and we are working very hard to focus on the factors in our “circle of control,” Ausel stated. “I believe both squads showed up to compete. We just got beat by two competitive teams who did all the right things to beat us.” Chesley Ledesma followed CV’s top five runner to the finish line and placed 6th overall with a 23:02. Teammate Aubree Roop was 10 seconds behind for 7th while Halle Brown (9th, 24:10) and Hannah Wheeler (10th, 24:13) navigated the soggy course as Solanco’s third and
fourth runners. Sarah Snyder rounded out the top five in 12th place with Evelyn Billings one place back. “Chesley ran a strong race, challenging a strong CV squad through the first two miles,” noted Ausel.
“Aubree ran a strong last mile and Halle, a freshman, continues to improve. Our senior captain, Hannah Wheeler, had one of her best races this year. She has overcome some health issues to continue her

Avery Jacobsen finished ahead of three Lebanon runners and placed 7th with an 18:24. Colin Althoff (12th) and Tate Fisher (13th) crossed the line together with a 19:06 while Nathan Eller rounded out the counters with a 17th place time of 19:57. Jose Serrano, Kyle Stively, Brandon Daniel, Sean Keller and Liam Fidley packed it in after that, securing the 19th through 23rd places.
“Ben continues his gradual return to some strong finishes. He turned in a strong kick to hold off Lebanon’s No. 1 runner at the finish line,” Ausel pointed out. “Avery continues to impress and ran a gutsy race, challenging the No. 2 runners from both CV and Lebanon,” he added. “And first year runner Nathan Eller broke into the 19 minute range for the first time this season.” GOLF A handful of golfers competed in the League Championships last Monday on a soggy Conestoga Country Club course. Needing an 88 or better to qualify for districts, Andy Teaman led the Mules with a 102.

Greta Plechner (114) and Olivia Lasko (125) needed a 104 score to qualify for the girls portion of the tournament and also saw their season come to a close. TENNIS In a tightly contested match last Wednesday, the Mares put up a good fight against Garden Spot, the fourth place team in Section Two but fell short, 4-3. “What a crazy, close match on senior night,” said head coach Todd Brown. “Two of our matches went to tie breakers, which we split. Elsie Zaborskiy and Gabby Griffonetti continue to play great tennis which carries over to their singles matches. They are two of our three captains and are great leaders.” Zaborskiy and Griffonetti put Solanco on the board with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and both played tiebreaker matches in singles competition. Zaborskiy won 6-4, 5-7 (8-6) at No. 4 while Griffonetti came up short 7-5, 4-6 (10-3) at No. 3. Kerith Paine, at No. 1, lost 6-1, 6-4 and Faith Redcay bowed out 61, 6-1 at No. 2. The Mares capped their season in exciting fashion Friday afternoon. Not only did they pull out a 4-3 win over Elizabethtown for their second Section Two victory but did it playing indoors at the Hempfield Rec Center. “Due to the weather we were forced inside,” said Brown. “The ladies responded well to the sudden change, came out strong, and rode the momentum to a victory.” Zaborskiy teamed with Griffonetti for an 8-4 doubles win and posted a 6-4, 6-4 singles victory. “Elsie continued to lead the team in number of wins,” noted Brown. “Sophia Baker and Kelsey Sheets put together a great No. 3 double shutout and Kerith Paine played well. She and Faith won a comeback match 9-7 and in singles play, Kerith pushed her opponent to a tie-breaker set.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The lady booters picked up the scoring last week and tallied backto-back shutouts, crushing McCaskey 6-0 on Wednesday and coming back with a dominating effort over Octorara one day later, 8-0. “Everyone played hard and a lot of the reserves were able to get time and contribute,” said head coach Ken Yoder. Angie Cylc led the way against McCaskey with two goals and one assist. Grace Kreider also scored twice, both in the first half as Solanco pushed out to a 5-0 lead at the half. Reece Curry-Saner assisted on three of the six goals scored and Alana Yoder added two assists. Kayden Bedwell and Sammi Jackson, who tallied the last goal, added to the total. One day later, Grace Unger’s hat trick sparked the 8-0 victory over Octorara. The Mares held a 3-0 first half lead with Ryleigh Ferrari, Unger and Kreider all finding the back of the net. A balanced second half effort put the game out of reach. Unger scored twice with Kreider, Hanna Sweda and Yoder contributing. Solanco tallied three of those goals in the final three minutes. Yoder, Curry-Saner, and Nikki
Trout all dished out two assists with Kreider and Jackson adding one. Facing Octorara again on Saturday, Unger led a 4-1 victory with a pair of first half tallies. Ferrari opened the scoring in the eighth minute and Jackson scored the only goal of the second half with three minutes left. Gracie Jackson chipped in with a pair of assists. The wins push Solanco’s overall record to 6-7. FIELD HOCKEY Trying to move ahead of Cocalico in the standings last Wednesday, the Mares were instead dealt a 6-0 loss. The Eagles, led by Caroline Baum’s two goal effort, scored just 46 seconds into the contest but held just a slim 2-0 lead at the break. With four different players scoring, they took control in the second half. One day later, Solanco grabbed a victory over McCaskey on Maggie Hirst’s second half game-winner. “I think after tying them the first time, the girls wanted to beat them,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “We had many corners we could have capitalized on but with the field conditions, it wasn’t that easy.” The Mares took the early lead in this one with Emma Curtis assisting Mylee Smith for her first goal of the season just 6:15 in. The hosts, still searching for their first league win, knotted the score just over two minutes later. Hirst, however, taking the pass from Mariah Stoltzfus, notched the game-winner just 2:01
after the break. Alta Brandenberger earned the win with four saves on the day. In non-league action Saturday, Solanco improved to 3-7-1 with a 10 victory over Spring Grove. Keirra Laird’s unassisted goal in the first half proved to be the game winner. Brandenberger earned the shutout with seven saves. VOLLEYBALL It was another three match week for the volleyball team and while they took both CV and L-S to four sets, they still suffered three losses. Monday they hosted CV, the second to last team in Section One, and opened with a solid 25-20 win. Unfortunately CV’s Savannah Byers and her 20 kills provided enough offense for the Bucks to pull away with three wins, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19. Kara McClune was solid on the night with five aces and teamed with Nathaly Molinarez for five kills each. In addition to putting up 12 assists, Emma Canale also led with a game-high 4 blocks and Bri Langley picked up 16 digs. One day later, the team hosted Lampeter-Strasburg. This time they fought from behind, forcing a fourth set with a 25-18 third set win. The visitors pulled out a slim 25-22 win to start the night and dominated the second set 25-13 before capping the victory with a 29-19 final set. Molinarez led with 7 kills and McClune chipped in with 4 aces to

lead the offense. Langley and McClune combined for 15 digs and Canale put up a pair of blocks and 15 assists. Thursday the team traveled to Manheim Central where they dropped three straight, 25-21, 25-11, 25-12. McClune and Molinarez each served 2 aces and McClune added 5 kills due in part to Canale’s 4 assists. Langley recorded a dozen more digs while Georgia Ewing, Jada Dow and Canale each added one block. On Sept. 22 the Mares hosted a tri-match with Columbia and William Penn and came away with two 3-0 shutouts. McClune, with a solid performance, finished the weekend with 6 aces, 15 kills and 8 digs. Ewing recorded 14 kills, 1 block and 3 digs and Canale dished out 22 assists and put down 6 kills. Other top contributors included Langley (14 digs) and freshmen Madi Davis (8 assists, 4 digs, 2 aces) and Trinity Erisman (6 kills). Local Events • Local Shopping • Local News

Reinhart reported that since its first event in 1980, the Solanco CROP Walk has raised more than $358,000. Last year, 55 walkers representing 12 southern Lancaster County churches raised greater than $9,200. To encourage fundraising for the event, a local restaurant will supply gift cards to those who raise at least $100 by the day of the event. CROP Walk participants should arrive at Muddy Run by 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 20. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and will follow
a trail approximately 5 miles long. An alternate, shorter, family-friendly route over easier terrain will be available for those who wish to participate. Refreshments will be served after the walk, so participants will be able to share a time of fellowship. The water/apple station will also serve as a photo op location. Reinhart noted that folks may pose for selfies with a large picture frame decorated with a CROP logo to share on social media. Additionally, walkers may participate in a scavenger hunt

Grace Church at Willow Valley will welcome Jaime Saint as the keynote speaker for the Grace On Mission Conference that will be held at the church, 300 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 7. Jaime will speak throughout the evening at the Global Coffee House that has been set for Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center and at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. worship services in the sanctuary on Oct. 7. Jaime is the executive director of ITEC - Indigenous People’s Technology and Education Center, which was created to give indigenous people the tools they need to fulfill their part in sharing the Gospel and making disciples of Jesus Christ. Jaime’s father, Steve Saint, started ITEC in 1996 to develop tools and training to equip the indigenous Christ-followers to meet the physical and spiritual needs of their own people.

The Saint family has a long history on the front line in missions. Steve was born and raised in Ecuador, where his father, Nate Saint, and fellow missionaries Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Peter Flemming, and Roger Youderian, were killed in 1956 by the Waodani Indians, whom the men were reaching with the Gospel. After his father’s death, Steve attended school in Quito, Ecuador, and spent summers living with the Waodani in the jungles. He was baptized in the same river where his father’s body was found, by the same men who had speared his father and had later come to faith in Jesus Christ. Steve and his wife, Ginny, along with Jaime and his three siblings, returned to live with the Waodani in the mid-1990s. It was out of that experience that ITEC was formed. ITEC provides tribal people with innovative training in medicine, dentistry, optometry, aviation, and filmmaking. The organization also builds special tools that can be used in the remote areas where many tribal people live. For more information about the Grace On Mission Conference, readers may call the church at 717464-2782.

With the exception of a few laps walked by Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) canines, dogs are not allowed to take part in Relay For Life events. But some Relay For Life team members wanted to hold an event where dogs could be featured. “Relay For Life (fundraisers are typically held) at a high school, and you can’t take your dog,” lamented Angie Woolf, a member of the Misfit Bankers team. “But more often than not, a dog is someone’s caregiver. (Dogs) comfort you whether you have a cold or cancer.” To celebrate the important bond between humans and pets, especially during illness, Woolf has organized American Cancer Society Bark For Life events for the past several years. The 2018 Bark For Life of Lancaster will

Organizer Angie Woolf and Rylan (right photo) invite big dogs, small dogs, cute dogs, and more to join in Bark for Life, which will be held at the Manheim Township Park in Neffsville on Oct. 6. take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. The event honors the lifelong contributions of canines to cancer survivors. Bark For Life came to Lancaster six years ago when the Captain Morgan Relay For Life team held the first event. When the Relay For Life Leadership Team took charge of the event, other Relay For Life teams began to participate. Bark For Life supports the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lancaster. Funds raised through the events helps support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives by funding research, supporting education efforts, and providing free information and critical services for cancer patients. “My (Relay For Life) team is the Misfit Bankers,” explained Woolf. “But for Bark For Life, we are the Misfit Barkers.” According to Woolf, registration on the day of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., there will be an opening ceremony to honor cancer survivors and caregivers,
both human and canine. “We will take the opportunity to remember those we’ve lost,” said Woolf, who added that the ceremony is unifying. “There isn’t anyone who doesn’t know someone who has had cancer,” Woolf said. The somber ceremony will be followed by a type of pet parade. “We do a Strut Your Mutt parade,” said Woolf. “(During the parade), people who register can be in the contest for biggest, smallest, cutest, (and more categories),” said Woolf. The strut will be followed by a game of musical sits and a pet trick contest dubbed Barks Got Talent. “Last year, George, a white Shih Tzu, won because when you say ‘Fire,’ he stops, drops, and rolls,” said Woolf. “That was adorable.” Paula Auerbach, whose golden retriever Rylan is a KPETS dog, said that she got involved in Bark For Life after seeing how humans and dogs interacted when the KPETS dogs were allowed on the track at Relay For Life - Lancaster. “What was amazing to me was that during the Survivor Walk and the

Caregiver Walk, there were so many people who broke ranks to hug the dogs,” she said. “People were so impressed.” Woolf added, “The dogs were very comforting to the survivors and the caregivers during their walk.” Woolf noted that past walks have attracted 80 to 100 walkers, but she hopes to see more this year. Past events have raised up to $10,000, and Woolf hopes to meet or exceed that goal this year, as well. There is a minimum per-dog registration fee to take part in Bark For Life. Owners registering multiple dogs will receive a discount after registering the first dog. Readers may register at www.relayforlife.org/barklancaster pa. Goodie bags containing items donated by vendors and sponsors of the event will be available for early registrants. Woolf noted that past goodie bags have contained dog-themed items, including dish towels, dog waste bag holders, and flying discs. Fee-Free Cat Adoption Event Set In response to an elevated number of incoming cats, the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will offer a Free to a Great Home - Fee-Free Cat Adoption Event at the shelter each day from Friday, Sept. 21, to Sunday, Oct. 7. Cats may be adopted from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. As a nationally recognized initiative, the Free to a Great Home program was created in 2005 to provide free cat adoptions to qualified adopters throughout the community. Adopters wishing to save a cat’s life through the Free to Great Home emergency cat adoption program must go through the same adoption screening process as any other adopter. Once the adopter is approved, the cat adoption fee is waived. The cat receives a health supplement, spaying or neutering prior to adoption, vaccinations and deworming medication, flea treatment, microchipping and chip registration, and a bag of pet food. The free adoption event provides families with the ability to welcome a new furry friend into their home without needing to pay the standard adoption fee. Throughout the weekend, families can view, select, and meetand-greet with cats that are available for adoption. To view the cats that are available for adoption, readers may visit www.humanepa.org /adoption. They may also meet the cats at the shelter during the scheduled operating hours. For more information about the free adoption event, readers may call 717-393-6551 or email adoptlancaster@humanepa.org.

Homecoming Celebration Planned At LMS By Ann Mead Ash
Aubrey Kreider, director of marketing and communications at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), wants area residents to know that they need not have an affiliation with the school to attend the homecoming barbecue. “People who aren’t connected to the school should feel welcome to come to the barbecue,” said Kreider. New additions to the Friday night activities designed especially for children will include a hayride and face painting. Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) will hold festivities on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 and 6, which will combine homecoming events with opportunities to invest in the futures of LMS students. The homecoming and Fall Festival fun will begin with children’s activities at 4 p.m. on Oct. 5, at the school’s Lancaster campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East,
Lancaster. A pork and chicken barbecue meal will be served from 4 to 7 p.m., with takeout available from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. An ice cream truck will be on-site from 4 to 9 p.m. LMS sports games that will be held at the school that evening will include a girls’ field hockey game against Octorara High School at 5:30 p.m. and a boys’ soccer game against Cocalico High School at 7:30 p.m. A hymn sing will be held in the school’s Fine Arts Center beginning at 7 p.m. Two Alumni of the Year will be announced during that event. On Oct. 6, the LMS FFA will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. The breakfast is traditionally held at the same time as the annual Iron Bridge Run, a 5K trail run/walk. Registered runners may eat breakfast for free, and breakfasts will be available for purchase for non-runners. Registration for
the run will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the run will start at 9 a.m. A free half-mile Kids’ Fun Run for children age 12 and under will be held as well. Prizes will be given to the top three male and female 5K winners in seven age groups. “People love that this trail is wooded and scenic,” said Kreider, who added that she hopes for a brisk fall morning for runners and walkers. This year’s run is held in partnership with nonprofit Thrive and Grit to support sisters fighting breast cancer. To learn more, readers may visit https://thriveand grit.org. Registration for the 5K is available at w w w . l a n c a s t e r mennonite.org/homecoming2018. The Oct. 6 festivities will conclude with the annual benefit auction at 6:30 p.m. The event will begin with appetizers and a silent auction. A live auction will be held following dessert at 7:45 p.m. According to Kreider, the goal of the
evening is to support students through scholarship funds while having fun. She added that one auction item will be a goat yoga class. Other auction items will include tickets to a Barnstormers game, a party with a local ice cream business that will include a visit from the cow mascot, a week at a bay house, and a flight lesson, among others. “The whole weekend is about making tuition affordable for families,” said Kreider. One segment of the event that aims to give bidders an opportunity to sponsor students is the “Cookie Kids” auction. During this time, students share testimonies about their experiences at LMS, leading up to the auctioning of gingerbread men. There is a cost to attend the auction. Readers may register at www.lancastermennonite.org/ homecoming2018 or by emailing events@lancastermennonite.org or calling 717-509-4459.
