Thriving Under Extraordinary Circumstances By Chelsea Peifer

Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later

Sisters Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello (middle) and Megan Sauder Ralston (right) started Thrive and Grit to create awareness of breast cancer in women under age 40, donate toward research, and support others. Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 30, just nine months after giving birth to her son, Bryce (left), and See Thrive And Grit pg 8 passed away in 2018 at age 31.

Actual Patient Results

Nearly 50 high school seniors from all over Lancaster County have been hard at work learning how to safely handle dogs as part of the Veterinary Assistant Program at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), 1730 Hans Herr Drive. When the students graduate at the end of the year, they will be able to work as veterinary assistants. Many of the students will continue their studies at a technical college, working toward certification as veterinary technicians. In the meantime, however, the students need opportunities to practice their skills and increase their familiarity around many kinds of animals. One way that the program enables students to gain this experience is by including a visit to the Westminster Dog Show in New York City in the course curriculum. The trip, this year set for February 2020, has a significant cost, so the students will work together to earn funds while practicing their grooming skills and benefiting dogs in the community. On Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the students will host the annual Barktoberfest at the LCCTC Willow Street campus. At the outdoor event, students will sell dog bath vouchers to be used during the 2019-20 school year, and microchipping services will be available for a separate fee. In addition, games for children will be available, vendors’ goods will be on display,

Elaina Kreider (25:04) rounding out “I think Garden Spot came out a little tougher and harder,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “Home game. Senior night. You get a little more amped up. “They had 15 shots on goal to our six,” she added. “We play very well between the 25’s, but when we get in our circles, at either end, we get frantic and lose our composure. It’s something we’ll keep working on. “Overall, the girls worked well together and Kimmy Beacham had a great game with 14 saves on 15 shots.” Wednesday the Mares dropped a 7-0 result on the turf at Donegal. Saturday, Sept. 28, the field hockey team traveled to Spring Grove for a nonleague outing and came home with an overtime victory. Leading 15-2 in corners and 16-10 in shots, the Mares were not without opportunity. Yet the gamewinner came at the 9:12 mark of the extra period. Emma Curtis set up the play with a corner insert to Kayla McCauley. Her shot was knocked down by the defense and back to Curtis who caught the rebound and used a reverse flick for the win. “We had many chances,” said Hawkins. “It was a lot of back-andforth before we scored on a corner that Brooke Smith caught and passed down low to Kayla who found the opposite corner.” The hosts, taking advantage of Solanco’s slow recovery, netted the tying goal with 2:35 left in the game. the top five with eighth and ninth place respectively. “This was Daria’s first win and she ran the second all-time fastest lady time on our course at 20:27,” noted head coach Craig Ausel. “As she was finishing I told her to smile and enjoy it. You always remember your first win. “Emma and Nicole went out strong and smart and edged Manor’s No. 2 and 3 runners. Both ran course PR’s, knocking off more than 1:30 off their previous times. Halle and Elaina placed in front of Manor’s fifth runner to finish the scoring,” he added.

Stella Woy ran sixth for the Mares and came close to displacing Manor’s fifth counter. Senior Evelyn Billings capped her home course career with a personal course best 27:09. “She has been a quiet leader for the girls,” Ausel added. The boys’ race also proved to be a tight one and one that could have possibly turned out differently if four runners hadn’t taken a wrong turn and gone 30 yards out of their way. “At the 1.5 mile mark, two Penn Manor and two Solanco runners went the wrong direction and quickly had to reverse their direction,” explained Ausel.

“This caused a big shake up in the team placements. We lost 25-30. But even without the mix-up, I think it would have been Penn Manor 27-28.” The Comets (2-6) emerged with the top two places while Solanco’s Nathan Eller earned his highest finish of the year, placing 3rd in 18:06. Avery Jacobson followed in fourth place (18:25) with Tate Fisher (6th, 18:46), Anthony SolisMorales (7th, 18:47) and Joey Hartigan (10th, 19:11) rounding out the top five. “Anthony was running strong with the leaders before the mix up,” said Ausel. “He is ready to pop a big time and Warwick will be a great place to do it.”

FOOTBALL After surviving the Bears 28-26 in OT last year, Solanco needed a comefrom-behind victory on the road Friday Sept. 28. The Mules spoiled Elizabethtown’s homecoming and improved to 2-1 in Section Two and 42 overall with the 28-21 final. “We were down 14-0 in that first quarter but the seniors really did a great job in leading the team and keeping their heads up,” said head coach Tony Cox. The Mules erased that deficit with a 16play, second quarter touchdown by Grady Unger (15 carriers, 75 yards) and then knotted the score in the third quarter. The Bears fumbled and Solanco countered with a seven-yard burst by Rashawn Carter (3 carries, 19 yards). E-town, coming off three straight losses, went back in front early in the fourth when Leon Allen scored his second TD of the night, a seven-yard run. Again the Mules answered, this time with a 12-play drive and a two-yard plunge by Nick Yannutz, tying the game at 21-21. “We went with an onside kick,” Cox said. “We worked on it at practice and Trent McDowell (4-for-4 in PATs) did a nice job. We knew we needed to recover it to win and Zach Turpen did. So we ran the clock down and Nick scored on a three-yard run.” With 51 seconds left, the Bears still had time but the Mules buckled down. “Danny Bird came up with a big sack on fourth down and time ran out,” Cox said. “We have a lot of guys that contribute and work hard and we have a lot of kids we rotate in. “And we had two key passes as well,” he continued. “Ryan Smith (6 receptions on the year for 106 yards) had a big catch on fourth and three.I’d like to throw a bit more but we have such a young line out there.” Yannutz ran his rushing total to 609 yards on the year, going 158 yards on 35 carries. Defensively, Chad Carter and Seth Harnish both collected eight tackles with Bird and Taivon Murphy adding six each. 25-19 Thursday night against Lebanon. Davis and Unger combined for 11 assists, Quinonez and Molinarez added seven and six digs respectively, Fisher recorded four blocks and three aces and Dow added three kills. Solanco opened the second half of Section Two play on Sept. 26 against Manheim Central. The Barons swept the series with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-16 result. The Mares put forth a balanced effort on the defensive end with Maggie Perry (5), Unger (4), Molinarez (4), Davis (3) and Quinonez (3) all contributing in the digs category. Dow added four blocks and served four aces. Cutler and Molinarez combined for 5 kills and Davis distributed nine assists. GIRLS’ SOCCER In the Section Three log jam, Solanco and Cocalico found themselves tied for second place with identical 4-2-1 records. Last Monday, the Mares were looking to push ahead of the hosting Eagles but a 1-1 overtime tie proved otherwise. “Outside of the first five minutes, I thought we had the better play all afternoon,” said head coach Ken Yoder. Cocalico took advantage of Solanco’s sluggish start and scored in the sixth minute. With two minutes left in the half, Solanco answered the call. Hannah Wood cleared the ball to Kendal Janssen who found Kaylin Fowler in the middle of the field. “Kaylin had a great finish in the top of the net,” said Yoder. “She showed great composure to keep it on goal. And Hannah shut down their top attacking player all afternoon.” The play was back-and-forth after that, with neither team budging. Solanco led 7-5 in corners but the Eagles held a 10-9 edge in shots.

“We had some chances off corner kicks that we should have converted for the win,” Yoder noted. “It’s exciting reaching the 10-win milestone in a season for the first time, but we don’t want to stop there.” And they didn’t. Wednesday the Mares, with a two-goal effort from freshman Meg Bailey, blanked Lancaster Mennonite 3-zip. Fowler also chipped in with a goal while Nikki Trout, Unger and Janssen added assists. Dolan recorded one save to preserve the clean sheet. Solanco earned a pair of back-toback, non-league shutouts Sept. 27th and 28th. Friday’s win was a 3-0 final thanks to Grace Unger’s hat trick. The sophomore, who tied for the team in scoring last year, put Solanco in front with a goal in the 12th minute and sealed the deal in the second half, scoring twice in a span of two minutes. Less than 24 hours later, a 13 shot effort and a balanced attack led to Solanco’s highest goal production of the season, a 6-0 domination of Oxford. Unger, with two goals, pushed her season total to seven while Fowler also scored twice. Sammi Jackson added a first half goal and dished out three assists and Kayden Bedwell capped the scoring in the 72nd minute. Bailey and Janssen also scored. Dolan (2 saves) shared time in goal with Jordyn Ream. BOYS’ SOCCER In non-section play Saturday, Sept. 28, the Mules traveled to Lancaster Catholic, the second place team in Section Four, and came home with a 5-0 loss. Ben Brandenberger turned back five of the ten shots he faced.

Elizabethtown Tuesday. Sadly they came home with two losses. After putting up a 25-12 first set win and taking the second set 25-17, Octorara quickly wrapped up the 3-0 win, dispatching Solanco 25-5 in the third set. Bright spot on the night for the Mares was Alondra Quinonez with 11 digs and one ace. Madi Davis put up seven assists, five of which went to Jada Dow and Cheyanne Cutler for kills. On the plus side, the JV team pulled out a 2-1 thriller, winning both the first and third sets by a slim two points, 25-23, 27-25. The Bears (7-2 overall) rode a 12 kill night by Sydney Stewart to top the visitors 25-12, 25-17, 25-14. Molinarez finished with three kills and eight digs. Emma Canale was tough at the net with six blocks, Davis was credited with three assists and six digs and Quinonez, who also recorded six digs, served one ace as the Mares fell to 1-11 overall. “The scores don’t reflect how we played,” said head coach Meghan Cross. “We hung with them at different parts of the match. We had some unforced errors which kept our scores low but we were able to make switches in the lineup to adjust a few area where we were struggling.” Despite seven blocks and four kills by Canale, the Mares lost 25-17, 25-18,

Students from other schools may be dropped off at the center, 34 E. Funds raised at the auction will help to continue and expand the free after-school and summer programs Solid Rock offers for youths in kindergarten through grade nine. Solid Rock’s school-year programs started Sept. 30 and will run through May 2020. The ministry aims to provide opportunities for elementary school children to have a fun, social time together after a day at school. The daily schedule includes a snack, a group game, and a Bible lesson followed by a group activity or free time to enjoy all the center has to offer. Activities include pingpong, pool, foosball, crafts, board games, gaga, and more. For fourth- and fifth-grade students, an emphasis is placed on homework help on Tuesdays. Students in sixth through ninth grades have a youth night on Thursdays where they can experience community, friendship, mentorship, and fun in a Christ-centered context. “Our staff and volunteers treasure the opportunity to get to know the students and have fun with them,” executive director Raeanne Nixon said. “I started at Solid Rock in the fall of 2013, and over the years the students and families became family to

The fourth annual Haunted Park and Hayride at Oxford Area Regional Park will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12, from 6:30 through 10 p.m. each evening. Organized by the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA), the Haunted Park is a major fundraiser that has already become a fun holiday tradition for the entire community. Each night, a tractor-drawn hayride will take visitors past spooky tableaus and into a maze of frights. The event has a new course each year, so there are sure to be new scares.

to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to.

“She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

The first two rides each evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. will be familyfriendly, specially designed with milder scares more appropriate for younger children. After that, adult-level frights will begin, which may not be appropriate for small children. Other attractions during the weekend will include a display of hearses. Sword swallower David Peyre-Ferry will entertain crowds periodically at the park pavilion as visitors wait for or return from the hayride. A food truck will be on hand each evening. Oxford Area Regional Park is located at 900 W. Locust St., Oxford. No pets or alcohol are permitted in the park. No rain dates are set for the event. In the case of questionable weather, readers may

cially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. She was diagnosed with a pregnancyrelated breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. The congregation of Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, will host an indoor yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 60 households have pledged to contribute items to the sale. Organizers hope to draw a large crowd to the yard sale, as the proceeds have been earmarked for several global mission projects. Senior pastor Jerry Lingenfelter noted that the first $3,000 will be used to help Haitian pastor Charles Amicy purchase a vehicle that he can use to visit the five churches he supervises in rural Haiti. Amicy works with the Presbyterian Mission in Haiti, which supports a Cabaret-based orphanage that houses 20 to 25 children. The vehicle will also be used to transport children and staff members and to obtain supplies for the orphanage. Lingenfelter called Amicy a “global partner,” of which Mission Church has quite a few. These are pastors and congregations that the church actively supports by sending resources and personnel as needed. Mission teams have visited Amicy and his churches, and teams also traveled to churches in Mexico, Romania, and Trinidad in the past two months. Plans for summer 2020 are underway, when a team of junior high students will serve at a partner church in Montreal and a team of senior high students will serve in Trinidad. Teams of adults are also planning to go to Haiti and to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. “The rest (of the yard sale proceeds) will go to our missions account to support urgent requests from our global partners and supplement fundraising for short-term and relief teams,” Lingenfelter said. While the yard sale will have a global impact, the organizers expect it to make a difference locally as well. “It’s a great way to meet our new neigh-

bors,” Lingenfelter remarked. The church, which was previously located in Lancaster city for 18 years, bought the Lampeter campus of Lancaster County Christian School last year and held its first service there on April 1, 2018. “Yard-saling is very popular in our area,” Lingenfelter added. “(Mission Church’s yard sale is) a way anybody can support global missions,” suggested Brian Bitler, director of operations and strategic advancement. The event will offer an opportunity for individuals to contribute items they may not need or want anymore for others to purchase at a reasonable price. Members of the public are welcome to donate items for the yard sale. The organizers are looking for clothes, shoes, books, kitchen tools, toys, linens, tools, and pieces of furniture that are new or in good condition. Ratner Companies, parent company of Hair Cuttery, Bubbles, and Salon Cielo, has announced its new collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C). As part of the largest philanthropic campaign in the company’s 45-year history, all Ratner Companies salons launched the “My Strands” campaign on Oct. 1, and the campaign will continue through Saturday, Nov. 30. Throughout the campaign, guests may stop by their local salon, make a donation, purchase a color service, and take a photo to post on social media

with the hashtags #ChangeItUp and #StandUpToCancer. Each salon will be collecting donations from the public throughout the campaign, with Ratner Companies matching those donations dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. Additionally, Pulp Riot has agreed to donate $1 to SU2C for each Pulp Riot color service purchased at participating Hair Cuttery, Bubbles, and Salon Cielo locations, up to $5,000. Author’s Work Selected For Award recommended Moore’s series of four historical novels. Since 1949, Freedoms Foundation National Awards have recognized responsible citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal. More than 56,000 citizens have received the honor. On Nov. 21, 1949, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower presented 200 recipients with the first Freedoms Foundation National Awards. The ceremony took place in a barn on a Colonial farm once occupied by Washington’s troops, which is now the site of the

national headquarters of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. “Journey Into Darkness” was begun by Moore in 1960 while he was in high school. He decided to continue the project, and writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed. The years passed as the author went off to college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. More than 20 years later, Moore was telling the story on a camping trip and one of the listeners, Charley French, offered

J. Arthur Moore was nominated and selected to receive Freedoms Foundation’s National Award, the George Washington Honor Medal. According to David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Moore’s book “Journey Into Darkness” exemplifies the essence of the National Awards: promotion of an understanding and appreciation for the country’s heritage, principles, and freedoms. In his letter of nomination, Paul Sanborn, historian, Freedoms Foundation, highly

to represent Duane Kinkade photographically if Moore would finish writing the story. Over the next four years, “Journey Into Darkness” evolved as a four-book series. French and friends did annual photo shoots over this time. Moore self-published the second title in the series, “Up From Corinth,” through Xlibris Publishing in July 2011. It was followed a year later by the remaining three books in the series. The following year, the entire series was released as the novel “Journey Into Darkness,” comprising each book. At the same time, two other novels were published, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Blake’s Story.” Omnibook Company of New York, N.Y., through its agent, Andy Sullivan, has become Moore’s current publisher. Over the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019, “Journey Into Darkness” was republished in three formats. Currently, “Summer” and “Blake’s Story” are in development for release in October. In the process of republishing, the two Civil War titles were expanded to add full reference sections in the back. “Journey” earned the Silver Book Medal from Readers’ Favorites, was recognized by the Cinematic Book Award and Fresh Voices Screenplay Competition, became winner of the Book Excellence Award, and now has been selected for the Freedoms Foundation George Washington Honor Medal of the National Awards. More information is available at www.acrossthevalley todarkness.com. Moore, a retired teacher, has developed Civil War programs to be presented at schools and libraries. Moore not only writes his historic fiction from the point of vew of the boy soldier in the Civil War, but also shares the history of the real boys who served in the Civil War in his presentations. The presentations are also part of an annual living history encampment held in June at the Robert Fulton Birthplace Museum and Garden south of Quarryville.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a donation of $122,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in central Pennsylvania. The funds will be used to support the transformation of the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide 127,000 meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to restructure its traditional backpack programs, which only serve the child,

into school pantry and mobile distribution programs, which will feed the whole family. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities it serves. Through its Made-toShare program, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 588 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. To learn more about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, readers may visit www.central pafoodbank.org. For more information about Sheetz, readers may visit www.sheetz.com. Sheetz For the Kidz is a nonprofit organization, designated as a 501(c)(3) charity, independent of the Sheetz Corporation. To date, the charity has impacted more than 119,500 children living in the communities Sheetz serves.
